Tiie national appellation <strong>of</strong> Brit <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

imports, not <strong>the</strong> infular nature <strong>of</strong> Albion, by<br />

which it was feparated from all <strong>the</strong> world, but<br />

merely its disjunction from Gaul- <strong>The</strong> lormer<br />

could not be known for ages after <strong>the</strong> name<br />

mufl have been inip<strong>of</strong>ed. And <strong>the</strong> latter was<br />

an obvious and ftriking particularity. <strong>The</strong><br />

Gael or Wealas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> continent paiTing over<br />

into Albion, <strong>the</strong>y woiild naturally be denomi-<br />

nated, as <strong>the</strong>y are a&ially and repeatedly denomi-<br />

nated in <strong>the</strong> Saxon Chronicle, <strong>the</strong> -Bryt-Weaias<br />

or Bryttas '•. But how Hiall we leng<strong>the</strong>n Brit<br />

into Britanni and Britones ? We cannot with<br />
