Preparing a Lesson Plan for Tomorrow’s Children
Some of the best and brightest scholars at Kean University are first-generation
college students. Harwood Scholarship recipient Jonathan Olavarria is no
exception. The junior history major with certification in secondary education has
embraced his college experience with open arms, serving the campus community
as a peer counselor in the Exceptional Educational Opportunities program, as well
as a participant in multiple student organizations including the African Students
Association and the Pan-African Student Union.

Endowed Scholarship is awarded
to undergraduates, many from
Jersey City, N.J., with a minimum
3.0 GPA and proven financial need.
Jonathan believes that earning the Harwood Scholarship is a perfect complement to
his active lifestyle at Kean, as well as his participation in religious volunteer programs
beyond the University. “Being a first-generation college student, my grandmother
and I express our deepest appreciation for Mr. and Mrs. Harwood investing in my
education,” says Jonathan. “This scholarship motivates me in pursuing my degree,
so that I can give back through teaching once I earn my degree.”
