“In the year that has passed,
capital campaign donations are
already making a difference in the
lives of our students, thus enhancing
our status as the third largest and
most diverse institution of higher
education in the state. Kean University
students are truly receiving a world
class education.”
Nancy Boucher, Christine Sanders and W. John Bauer, Ph.D.
Carrying on a Family Tradition of Generosity
The paths of Professor Emeritus W. John Bauer, Ph.D. and the late Estelle Ritchie initially crossed
during their time as junior faculty colleagues in the English Department at Kean University (then
Newark State College) back in 1965. They remained close friends until her passing in 2001.
Upon his retirement the following year, Dr. Bauer joined the Foundation Board of Directors and
involved himself with the scholarship committee. It was at that point, when he, in conjunction with
his sister Nancy Boucher and his friend Janice DeYoung, decided to pay tribute to Estelle in a way
she would truly appreciate: through the students. Thus the Estelle Ritchie Endowed Scholarship
in English, awarded to senior English major Kathi Slattery, and the Estelle Ritchie Endowed
Scholarship in Theatre, awarded to senior theatre major Christine Sanders, were established and
funded through the generosity of many friends, former students and colleagues.
“Professors don’t always get to see how effective their teaching is while students are still in
the classroom,” observes Dr. Bauer. “Later they may receive a note from a former student or
perhaps, a visit from someone who wants to let them know how much of a role they actually
played in his or her education. Many of Estelle’s students stayed in touch with her, and with these
scholarships in her name, her legacy is being passed on to others who can know her only through
her reputation and writing.”
Deronie Cole and Patricia M. Barksdale ’95
Sharing the Wealth
In her role as a Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor for Merrill Lynch, planning
financially for the future is something that scholarship donor Patricia M. Barksdale ’95 takes
very seriously in her profession. The Certified Financial Manager, Chartered Retirement Planning
Counselor, and a member of the Kean University Foundation Board of Directors, approaches her
practice holistically, by listening to what is important in her clients’ life plans and establishing a
road map to follow in pursuit of their goal. Patricia carries this philosophy over to her personal
life and wants to instill this value in the life of a deserving Kean University student, which is one
of the primary reasons she established the Patricia M. Barksdale Scholarship, awarded this year
to junior computer science major, Deronie Cole.
“I am an advocate for education, and I decided to establish a scholarship to help individuals
who face the same financial challenges that I did while trying to complete my degree,” recalls
Barksdale. “As a donor and alumna of Kean University, providing a scholarship enables me to
give back, prepare students for the future and live my legacy each day.”
Scholarship Fact: The Patricia M.
Barksdale Scholarship is presented to juniors
and seniors residing in Newark, Roselle,
Elizabeth or Linden exhibiting a minimum
2.5 GPA and proven financial need.

Generating Hope Amidst Tragedy
Kean University Donor Libby De Grado-Condo loved to watch her late son, Andrew ’83,
play the piano. She enjoyed the experience, from not only the perspective of a proud
parent, but even more so as a member of the audience. Libby also recalls how much
Andrew enjoyed teaching and sharing his talent with others, which is why upon his
passing, she memorialized him by establishing the Andrew George De Grado Endowed
Piano Scholarship, which was awarded to sophomore music major, Jennifer Torres.
Andrew De Grado performed internationally, alongside many renowned musicians at
acclaimed venues that included Carnegie Hall. “Music was a wonderful world for my
son,” recalls Libby. “This scholarship keeps his memory going and helps other young
students who have interest in the arts.”
“Many of our students have
to work and support a family,
so anything we can do to
alleviate their financial burden
is critical and essential.
Scholarship support is
a wonderful way of
accomplishing this objective.”
Alexander Valencia
Performing Musical Therapy
Alexander Valencia believes that he is truly blessed. Not only is he an extremely talented
musician and student at Kean University, but he is also a recipient of the Wilf Family
Foundation Scholarship. The senior music major, who serves as a volunteer piano
teacher and music director at the United Latin American Pentecostal Church in North
Bergen, New Jersey, has also been a featured artist at numerous on-campus performing
arts programs.
Valencia, one of the twelve annual Wilf Family Foundation Scholarship awardees, is an
advocate of education, who enjoys sharing the therapeutic benefits of his music with
others. “I believe music is an antidote to stress, daily worries, depression and many
other emotional conditions that affect us everyday,” states Valencia. “My goal is to get
all of the available tools to enrich my knowledge and give back to my community.”
Working on a Dream
As a wife and the mother of five, Noelia Garcia already has what many people would
consider a full-time job in itself. However, beyond these tremendous responsibilities on the
home front, she finds time to attend Kean University, where she works toward receiving
a degree in Spanish with the ultimate goal of becoming a K-12 Spanish teacher. All of
these circumstances, in addition to her outstanding academic background, earned her the
Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship for Mature Women.
“In my role as a spouse and parent, I have come to develop a high degree of responsibility
before the challenging trends of life,” states Noelia. “This unique qualification united with my
natural endurance, is helping me through my Kean University educational program.”
During 2007-08, Newcombe Scholarships averaging $2,270 were awarded to 542 women at
thirty-one colleges and universities. In the past year, the Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation
has contributed $35,000 to the Kean University Foundation.
Fortifying a Healthy Future
Albert and Helen Mazurkiewicz Endowed Scholarship recipient David Brzyski is a
self-admitted “people person.” This trait has been evident since the day he was
accepted into the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics
Education (NJCSTME) BS/MS Biotechnology program. Throughout his tenure at
Kean, the senior has been proactively involved with programs that connect him with
fellow students and faculty, as well as those which introduce him to new ones.
A student ambassador, intern and participant in the Student for a Day program, it is
no surprise that the dedication he puts forth toward being successful in his major
is a by-product of his affinity to helping those around him. “The idea of discovering
a new drug or even a cure for a disease is what keeps me motivated,” says David.
“If I could help just one person manage his disease or find a cure, in my eyes, that
would be a tremendous success.”
Lowell Harwood, Kean University Trustee Emeritus, and Jonathan Olavarria
Preparing a Lesson Plan for Tomorrow’s Children
Some of the best and brightest scholars at Kean University are first-generation
college students. Harwood Scholarship recipient Jonathan Olavarria is no
exception. The junior history major with certification in secondary education has
embraced his college experience with open arms, serving the campus community
as a peer counselor in the Exceptional Educational Opportunities program, as well
as a participant in multiple student organizations including the African Students
Association and the Pan-African Student Union.
Scholarship Fact: Established
by Trustee Emeritus Lowell Harwood
and his wife, Toby, the Harwood
Endowed Scholarship is awarded
to undergraduates, many from
Jersey City, N.J., with a minimum
3.0 GPA and proven financial need.
Jonathan believes that earning the Harwood Scholarship is a perfect complement to
his active lifestyle at Kean, as well as his participation in religious volunteer programs
beyond the University. “Being a first-generation college student, my grandmother
and I express our deepest appreciation for Mr. and Mrs. Harwood investing in my
education,” says Jonathan. “This scholarship motivates me in pursuing my degree,
so that I can give back through teaching once I earn my degree.”

Breaking Philanthropy
Down to a Science
One of Kean University’s most generous donors, Don
R. Conklin is the retired president of Schering-Plough
Worldwide Pharmaceutical Operations. Conklin first
became involved with Kean in 1993, when he served as
honorary chairman of the University’s capital campaign
for what is now the Nancy Thompson Library. He has
taken on a very active and philanthropic role with the
Foundation Board of Directors, recently making an
extremely generous $1 million donation.
A Union, N.J. native and Basking Ridge resident, Conklin
believes that Kean University provides an opportunity
for self-advancement to many thousands of students.
Besides his recent gift, he has established a scholarship
for undergraduate students at the institution.
As a member of the New Jersey Center for Science,
Technology and Mathematics Education (NJCSTME)
Advisory Board, he has been instrumental in helping
the flourishing Center advance in its mission of training
the state’s next generation of forerunners in science,
mathematics, technology and education. In recognition
of his support, Conklin was presented with an honorary
degree and was the honoree at the Ninth Annual Kean
Upholding an Educational
Partnership with Kean
Susan Kogan has the unique perspective of serving
Kean University from both the standpoint of an adjunct
add philanthropist to the list of contributions.
Kogan has been linked with Kean for more than 20 years
in the areas of both academia and special programs.
In addition to teaching mathematics, Kogan has taught
