Spring Spectacular XXXVII — 1

Welcome to our 37th Bull and Elite Female Sale. Our offering this year consists of polled and horned Full Fleckvieh,
Simmental, Angus and cross breds all carefully selected from our bull test goups. The bulls have all been BIO tested
and complete information on each bull is available.
We are proud to include a number of producers who participated in our test center. All bulls have had to meet the same criteria to
be selected for the sale. Our goal is to offer bulls that will offer calving ease, moderate frame, but which excel in performance and
carcass traits. Our offering should include enough diversity and specific traits to offer a solution for most breeding programs.
The female program has gone through the same BIO testing and we are offering a selected group from our 2009 calving program
ready to breed or flush. We have not sold any of our Angus females born last year but saved them for this spring sale.
On behalf of the Consigners, a special thank you to the Bar5 crew for a fine job in the preperation for the sale.
We will again offer a more comfortable seating arrangement at the sale and stable the cattle close to the sale barn for the
buyers convenience. This year we will include a video bull parade, dinner,an interesting presentation of what’s ahead in Beef
Improvement and social get together on the Friday night, so don’t miss it.
For your convenience we can offer assistance with your purchases through any of our associates and staff that are listed on the
first page of the catalogue.
The economy is improving so be out front and take advantage of it by building your herd with quality and performance.
We appreciate your past business and hope to serve you with your purchase whether you are here in person or electronically.
We hope to once again see you here and continue our friendship.
Thanks from all of us for coming and participating.
A. Visual inspection
We believe in using our own experience, and you should
yours, when evaluating cattle for your program, through visual
inspection to evaluate structural correctness, udders, body
condition, docility, hair coats, & skeletal structure. Structural
correctness & Visual appraisal are made, before selecting for
a sale.
B. Glossary to “Certified” Circle 3 Genetics “Physical
Assessment”
i.) Birth, Weaning + EOT Ratios
Birth weight, Weaning weight and EOT measurements taken
at the end of the 112 day test within a contemporary group,
together for 140 days; are the 3 “Actual” physical measurements.
A fourth is mature weight and height.
All cows at Bar 5 are weighed and height measured at weaning
with their calves, for mature ratios.
Birth Date: date of birth. (BD)
BW - Actual Birth Weight at birth.
% DB - Birth weight of calf expressed as a percentage of the Dams
weight. Dam weighed at weaning.
Weaning Wt - Actual – Actual weaning weight around 7 months
end of test Date (eot): Date of Evaluating, as close to target age
of 13 months or 400 days of age as possible.
%DW - Percent Dam at Weaning, AWW/Actual Dam weight taken
at weaning time.
eot - Weight a End Of Test: The date the physical measurements
are taken and indicates the last day of the 112 day test.
Hip Height - Height in inches at the hooks on EOT.
Frame - Frame Score; height adjusted for age to a frame score.
Y Frame - Frame Score adjusted to one year.
Mature Frame - Frame measured between 24-48 months.
adj. Density - Yearling adjusted weight (AYW / Frame Score) to
reflect Density at a year, in adjusted terms.
adj rea - Rib Eye Area adjusted to estimated size at 12 months
of age.
adj IMF - Intermuscular fat adjusted to 12 months of age.
Y Ht - Yearling Hip Height, and adjusted estimate in inches at a
MHt - Mature Height
C. Physical “EOT” Targets
i.) Birth Wt / Dam Wt ratio - Calf as a percent of Dam’s weight,
aim for 5-7%.
ii.) Weaning Weight Dam ratio - The Cowboy’s Paycheck!!
Low BW but extreme high WW - we still say the perfect cow
weighs a 1000 lbs., but weans off a 1000 lbs. calf at 7 months
(Act. Wt / Dam Wt). Our target is 65% / 1300 for 500%
iii.) Y Frame score = 5.5 to 7.0, the Bar 5 desired range, YH -
Yearling Height, MH - Mature Height
iv.) Density - Aim for over 200 on the AYW/FS or Adjusted
Density; using Actual Density of Height/Weight - 220 or 100
kgs.
v.) Carcass ultra sound = Balanced Carcass Values; Rib eye -
over 1 inch per 100 lbs.
- REA/CWT, high marbling % in the 3 or more range, &
moderate BF of 4-10 mm.
Actual Carcass Values: REA per 100 lbs.: REA/CWT - over
1.6mm Back Fat at 1300lbs.
6/1300 * 100 = 0.46; Marbling - 4.8%. 4.6 to 4.8 – See?
vi.) sC - testicle measurements = (cms) and min in 34 cms at a
year.
vii.) Yearling weights - Keep it 1250+ at one year, or a level for
your desired carcass size, but remember as you break that 1550
lbs. barrier - keep your eye on that Density & Frame Score as
carcass increase as well.
Aim for these 6 targets and you will
make Genetic Improvement!!
Here are two exceptional young Bulls that are still on test, but we thought they were too good not to offer to the Industry.
Buschbeck Empire 9232W
What do you get when you cross the most predominate cow families of Ferme Gagnon and Bar
5. You almost feel bad because it’s so easy. There is not guess work. We know what the Barb’s
Paint cow can do and we’ve seen the Siskas produce outstanding bulls. The end result is a
predictable high performing eye appealing individual. This polled bull will add value to any herd
anywhere. Introducing a pedigree like this to your herd should definitely make you, what’s the
word? Giddy!! We would like to reserve 100 doses for in herd use on this bull and be involved
in this future project, if the buyer, so chooses.
you won’t find a better bred SA. If you dig deep you will find all the big names of the Full Fleck
A Full South African polled bull with all the pigmentation and colour. One of the heavier bulls on
your list of checkouts. Cow calved unassisted and I definitely think that the birth weight relates
to the length of this calf at birth. His Sire Malo is a bull we used for two seasons and we are very
That’s right!! A direct EXT son out of a Stalburn cow that’s fast becoming “the” favourite around
here. She puts everything she has in her calves and does it every year. This year is no exception.
Performance & carcass quality comes natural to this guy. He is going through a growth spurt right
now except not up but out!! He put on about a foot of length over the last month and he will stand
out at Sale time. Big rib eye, deep flanked and sure footed. If you are looking for an Angus, you
should definitely consider this one.
F1 Bull out of a Red Angus cow that produced some outstanding Angus bulls that went on to
become Semen bulls. The Sire Gong is the all time great carcass bull at Bar 5 which was recently
sold to Garry Simmons of NC. This bull is a product out of 2 great individuals, not just a cross bred
bull, this is planned mating at its best. I invite you to come and try to pick a hole in this rascal. If
you are looking for hybrid vigour his calf crop will blow it out of the water. Give this guy a chance
big hipped but still smooth in the back end. Performance and carcass quality all come combined
really good calves. This one has pigmentation and solid body pattern, dark hooves and nice udder
Here we have a very honest heifer that we feel cannot be over looked. Her smooth shoulders blend
perfectly into her body. She strides out well and certainly doesn’t lack on her carcass score card
either. 404W has a very nice udder development. You are making a good buy with this individual.
We expect her to follow in the footsteps of the powerful cows in her pedigree.
spring of rib on a smaller heifer.
