GDL ®
39 Portable ADS-B Datalink
Your connection to subscription-free aviation weather and ADS-B traffic alerting in the cockpit.
Garmin GDL 39: It’s the easy, portable way to see immediate
benefits from the ADS-B datalink system.
Now, with the Garmin GDL 39 antenna/receiver in your aircraft,
you’re ready to connect with the FAA’s uplink for subscription-free
U.S. weather and traffic information from the ADS-B (Automatic Dependent
Surveillance –Broadcast) network. You can view all this data on select
Garmin GPS portable units – as well as on the Garmin G3X glass flight
display system for light sport/experimental aircraft. In addition, the GDL 39
offers wireless connectivity to bring this non-certified ADS-B “In” capability
to your Apple iPad ® or other iOS ® or Android-based devices compatible
with our Garmin Pilot mobile app. The ADS-B weather link is continuously
broadcast on the 978 MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) frequency,
and is similar to the basic services offered by
leading commercial satellite weather providers.
For example, you can access animated
NEXRAD imagery, METARs, TAFs, winds and
temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs, and
more 1 . Along with this, you can also receive
ADS-B position reports (and threat-level
symbology) to help you identify potential
traffic conflicts in busy airspace. And since
the GDL 39 is a dual-link receiver, it can
utilize air-to-air data from both 1090 ES and
978 UAT sources – enabling you to always see
other participating ADS-B traffic, regardless
of the ground station coverage where you’re
flying. What’s more, if your aircraft is equipped
with ADS-B “Out” capability 2 (via 1090 MHz
ES transponder, for example) you can also receive
ground-to-air TIS-B uplinks from nearby ADS-B ground stations,
allowing you to view – on your G3X cockpit display, or your portable,
tablet or mobile device – essentially the same dynamic traffic picture that
ATC ground controllers are seeing on their scopes. For best traffic uplink
results, you need to be a “participant” in the ADS-B system and have an
approved ADS-B “Out” system onboard. The GDL 39 does not provide this
“Out” function, but it can serve as an affordable receiver for aircraft that
are so equipped.
Other key features include:
• A built-in WAAS GPS receiver. You can use the GDL 39 to provide
GPS location information to your wirelessly connected iOS ® or
Android-based mobile devices. This provides your device with the
precision and performance you’d expect from Garmin’s aviation-grade
navigation devices – combining WAAS-quality positioning accuracy
with 5-times-per-second updating capability.
• Wireless Bluetooth connectivity. In your cockpit, the GDL 39’s
built-in Bluetooth feature provides wireless support for compatible
iOS ® or Android-based tablets and mobile devices using Garmin Pilot .
This wireless connectivity is also available for Garmin’s aera ® 795/796
portable. The GDL 39 can support two Bluetooth connections and one
wired connection simultaneously.
• Seamless integration with our Garmin Pilot app. This powerful
aviation software app works with a variety of iOS ® or Android-based
tablet computers, smartphones, etc. – turning each into a full-capability
moving-map navigator, flight planner and electronic flight bag with
geo-referenced approach plates, IFR enroute charts, VFR sectional charts,
and more. By adding a GDL 39 to the mix, these mobile devices can also
be used to display the subscription-free U.S. weather and traffic information
from ADS-B network uplinks.
• Battery-powered freedom. The GDL 39 is a true go-anywhere device.
You can plug it into your aircraft’s “cigarette lighter” outlet for onboard
power. Or there’s an optionally available clip-on Li-ION battery pack
that attaches to the base of the GDL 39 and provides up to 5 hours of
untethered operation between recharges.
• Easy onboard installation. A standard base mount is provided to allow
remote-mounting of the GDL 39 antenna in your aircraft. A bare wire cable
connection supports the permanent installation of the GDL 39
with a Garmin G3X glass flight display system.
• Show-and-tell traffic alerting. Garmin’s GDL 39 provides
the ADS-B traffic data to enable both audible and visual target
alerting 3 . Spoken audio alerts call out potential flight path
conflicts (“Traffic, traffic.”) to get you
looking right away. Meanwhile, on your
screen, Garmin’s TargetTrend relative
motion display 3 offers a faster, more
intuitive way of judging target trajectories
and closure rates in relation to your aircraft’s flight path. Not only does
the GDL 39 identify potential intruders in the air, but its Surface, or SURF,
technology also enables display of ground traffic to help pilots maintain
situational awareness within the airport environment.
• Built-in processing keeps you updated. Garmin’s GDL 39 continually
processes and caches ADS-B “In” data within the receiver itself. Thus,
the latest weather and traffic data is always available for instant access
when your GDL 39 is on: There’s no need to wait for the ADS-B ground
stations to go through their next cycle of uplinks when you “wake up”
your tablet or power on your cockpit display or portable device. Current
data is immediately available.
What could be simpler?
With only one button on the device, and very minimal setup required,
the Garmin GDL 39 is, by far, one of the simplest and smartest ways to
gain the benefits of ADS-B traffic and subscription-free aviation weather.
It’s compatible with a wide array of Garmin GPS portables and other
non-aviation-specific mobile devices. It comes ready to go, right out of the
box. And, of course, it’s backed by Garmin’s award-winning product and
warranty support. To find out more, just give your Garmin dealer a call. Or,
Track your traffic in relative motion.
Compared to traditional traffic displays, Garmin’s
TargetTrend relative motion view helps simplify pilot
decision-making by showing how other aircraft are
moving in relation to your aircraft’s speed and flight path
– showing which trajectories are most likely to converge
with your own.
Station location information.
A datalink information page (shown here on the GPSMAP
696 portable display) helps you keep track of your proximity
to broadcasting ADS-B ground stations in the area where
you’re flying. You can monitor the number and location of
stations your GLD 39 is receiving at any given time.
Yes
Uplink and display FIS-B weather.
Using the GDL 39 to connect with the FAA’s ADS-B
weather link, your compatible device (such as the Apple
iPad ® shown here) can access and display subscriptionfree
FIS-B weather reports, NEXRAD imagery, TAFs, TFRs,
AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs, and more – via ADS-B
network uplink.
Look for ADS-B traffic.
On select Garmin GPS portables, G3X flight displays, and compatible mobile devices
(such as the Apple iPad ® shown here), the GDL 39 can provide the ADS-B “In”
capability to uplink TIS-B traffic information from ATC radar surveillance – as well
as air-to-air tracking data from other ADS-B “Out” equipped aircraft in the vicinity.
Both audible and visual traffic alerts are provided with G3X and Garmin portables
at this time 3 .
Animate weather on your moving map.
The detailed FIS-B weather uplinked through the
GDL 39 (and shown here on Garmin’s G3X glass
flight display) can be overlaid and put into motion
on compatible moving map displays to provide
an integrated weather picture in relation to your
flight path.
Look closer for more clarity.
Unlike commercial satellite weather providers, which show a fairly uniform level of detail for all weather data
across the continent, the FAA’s FIS-B weather uplink version saves bandwidth by showing a somewhat less
detailed long-range continental U.S. (CONUS) picture (shown at left). The regional view (shown at right) is
typically much more detailed within the broadcast radius of the ground station from which it’s being sent.
FEATURES AT A GLANCE:
• Provides portable ADS-B “In”
reception for access to traffic and
weather on compatible Garmin
• Displays up to 30 intruder threats
on certain compatible devices
• Combines comprehensive traffic,
weather and GPS position in a
single portable product
Note: The GDL 39 is a non-certified
receive-only product. It does not
provide ADS-B “Out” capability to
satisfy ADS-B requirements. Unless
your aircraft is a “participant” with a
certified ADS-B “Out” solution, the
GDL 39 may not always receive valid
traffic from TIS-B ground stations 2 . The
display will advise when receiving data
from a TIS-B ground station.
1 NOTE: Not all FIS-B weather products may be
available on all Garmin displays. Please check your
Pilot’s Guide for the specifics on your product.
All uplinked FIS-B weather products and services
are provided at the discretion of the FAA.
2 Or, if your aircraft is flying in proximity to another
ADS-B “Out” participating aircraft, which can
trigger the ground uplink in your area.
3 Both the audible traffic alerting feature and
TargetTrend require compatible displays. Please
check the Pilot’s Guide for specific capabilities
available on your display. Not all aircraft will be
shown with TargetTrend relative motion lines.
