| Introductory word |Vorwort It is often said that no matter what you are doing, it is always good to stop occasionally and look round, to look back and see whether the work you have done was worth it and should be continued. One usually looks for the right time to look back, preferably on an anniversary. In 2010, MOIRA will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of its founding, originally as Alae Lupuli manufacturing MOIRA functional garments and later as the MOIRA company. This is precisely the right time for looking back. In a person’s lifetime the first twenty years are primarily a time of learning and searching. In a company, one can say that it is a time of maturing and tradition. MOIRA, for its entire existence, has been closely tied to the experiences and sporting activities of its founder, Mario Vlček. This all-round athlete gained his first experiences when staying in the great outdoors, first as a camper and later as a member of mountain climbing expeditions. His first great expedition to the Caucasus taught him the importance of seemingly trivial things such as garments for the emotional well-being of individuals, something which could consequently affect the success of the entire expedition. The second noteworthy expedition that he undertook was a journey through the mountains along the route Marco Polo travelled to Nepal. The members of the expedition became the last mountain climbing generation that was able to climb the mountains of Afghanistan. Since then, the country has been embroiled in military conflicts. In addition to satisfying a craving for adventure, for a perceptive person the expeditions meant learning important things that could be utilized later in defining the physiognomy of clothing in extreme conditions. In order to act and create, journeys searching for knowledge and understanding are not the only important things; the fateful meeting of people also plays an important role. “I was preparing expedition equipment for the outstanding mountaineer Miroslav Šmíd when he gave me a business card he‘d found in an abandoned tent in the South Saddle under Mount Everest. The empty tent was the only one left standing, the rest were torn apart and blown away by the wind. The person whose name was on the card was Jack Stephenson, the inventor who discovered the significance of vapour barriers. I visited him during my stay in America. He completely changed my previous knowledge about the physical attributes of fibres,” remembers Vlček. Thus began Vlček’s theoretical journey towards a higher-performance polypropylene fibre, a journey searching for a research workplace willing to work with him for an extended period of time. This resulted in the MOIRA TG 900 fibre, patented in 1996. He needed a strong will and perseverance in order to make the manufacture of functional garments a reality. “Good ideas come to life in the mind. In the 1980s, the first triathlons began to be organized (swimming 3.8 km, cycling 180 km, running 42.2 km), back then they were called the Ironman, the first extreme sport. My friends and I wanted to achieve more so we extended the individual stages to 5-250-50. Then we heard that somewhere in America they already had a similar race, so we increased the stages to a final 7-300-60, with a 24-hour time limit. Even though we were fit, this was a punishing race. “The race leader gave up a few kilometres before the finish and crawled into an ambulance. He implored me to give up the race also, saying that I was risking my life. I didn’t really want to give up, so he staggered out of the ambulance, and in the end, he passed me and won. His body couldn’t go on, but his mind urged him on. I came in second, actually second world-wide.”….. Mario Vlček for the Dobrodruh 2000 (Adventurer 2000) newspaper. The century flood in August 2002 destroyed the warehouses and part of the manufacturing equipment of Moira in the Modřany district of Prague. MOIRA gradually moved to the newly purchased former Fezko complex in the town of Strakonice. New weaving and finishing equipment were also purchased. Today, MOIRA is a comprehensively created manufacturing unit relying on its own development and design of fabrics, design of styles, manufacturing, and logistics, based in one location. Capite, Corde et Manibus is MOIRA’s motto. Utilizing our head, heart and hands we create products for you - you, who approach your life and lifestyle actively. Fezko in Strakonice umgezogen. Lebensstil. 5
