one of the largest free festivals in 

Kent! New events for this special 

year include fantastic air displays 

with wing walking and a Spitfi re 

Mk IXB, 1950s dance displays 

and rock and roll events, street 

theatre and a fabulous fi rework 

fi nale – with a twist! And of 

course, the festival favourites – 

opening parade, crab catching 

competition, sandcastle building 

and fi reworks to fi nish off the 

festival in style. 

This year’s programme is 

bursting with events ranging 

from great live music, street 

theatre, afternoon bandstand 

shows, family workshops and 

competitions – something for 

everyone (and it’s all free!). 

The festival is core funded 

and managed by Canterbury 

City Council, who work closely 

with a band of passionate and 

enthusiastic people that form 

the Herne Bay Festival Advisory 

Group. They support and 

help develop the festival, and 

contribute a huge amount 

of time and energy to ensure 

events are a great success. Of 

course we’re always looking for 

new members so please get in 

touch if you’re interested.

The Pier Trust presents 

Herne Bay Rocks! 

Thursday 16 to Thursday 23 August, 7.30pm start 

This year’s festival sees the return of the ever popular Herne 

Bay Rocks competition, a showcase held all over town for the 

duration of the festival, searching for the best local musical 

talent. Although called ‘Rocks’, any live music is welcome and in 

the past we have had everything from jazz, soul, ska, acoustic, 

acapella and rap as well as rock to name just a few styles. 

Previous winners have included Amber Room, featuring Matt 

Clubb and Sueleen Fletcher from BBC ‘The Voice’ and who will 

be appearing on our main stage on Saturday 25 (see page 40). 

There are two days in a recording studio and a slot on the 

festival’s main stage up for grabs for the winner. So come along 

to any of the listed venues and enjoy some brilliant live music

Herne Bay’s Got Talent! 

Sunday 26 August Central Bandstand 3pm 

Do you have the voice of an angel? Can you dance like J-Lo? Or 

are you the next Michael McIntyre? Whatever your talent, if it is 

entertaining, we want to see it! Come and enter yourself at our 

annual competition to fi nd the best talent in Herne Bay. With a whole 

afternoon of singing, dancing, comedy, magic and music – it’s the 

one event you won’t want to miss. Register at the Central Bandstand 

from 1pm to 2.30pm. Please read the rules below before entering. 

• Performers will be placed into one 

of fi ve age categories: 

four to eight, nine to 13, 14 to16, 

17 to 20, 21 over 

• All performances must take place 

on the Central Bandstand stage 

• Props and instruments must 

require no set up time 

• No act shall be longer than 

fi ve minutes 

• Facilities are available for CDs, 

tapes and IPods 

• No singing over backing tapes or 

CDs that include vocals 

(this may include some karaoke 

tapes/CDs) 

• Acts must off er no danger to 

either performer or spectators 

• The organisers reserve the right 

to stop the act at any time,

The Smuggler’s 

Parade 

Saturday 18 August 

Central Parade 8pm 

Are you a swash buckler, 

a grog-swiller, or a captain of 

the seas? Then put on your eye-patch 

and join in this merry band of pirates 

as they make their way along Central Parade 

from Lane End to the Clocktower Plaza. 

The pirate parade needs everyone to be 

involved, and there are two ways to enter. 

Either book on one of our workshops that are 

running on Thursday 16, Friday 17 or Saturday 

18 August and be involved with creating the 

costumes that make up the parade. Or if you 

can’t make the workshops, register 

online (this is really important!) and then 

turn up on the night dressed to look the part! 

You can be as creative as you like with your 

costume – perhaps add a captain’s hat, a 

beard, or a stripey top. 

As this is an evening parade we’ll be handing 

out glow sticks for you to carry, but why not 

bring a torch as well – and make sure you 

really shine? All children in the parade must be 

accompanied by at least one adult – 

make sure they get dressed up too!

Herne Bay Histories 

For the Herne Bay Festival, Beach 

Creative will be building on a 

project looking at the town’s 

residents and visitors’ views on 

their experiences of being in 

Herne Bay. 

As part of this, the public 

are invited to come to Beach 

House to tell their stories and 

be fi lmed. There will be a series 

of creative workshops to give 

participants ideas about how 

they might produce creative 

work, which tells their stories, 

and the outcomes produced 

will form part of an exhibition in 

Beach House to be launched on 

Saturday 25 August.

Beach Creative is a non-profi t community interest organisation that aims to support and enable the 

development of creative industries in the Herne Bay district. Part of this will be to increase opportunities 

for the community to develop their creative skills and participate in the arts, locally, nationally and, 

internationally. The University for the Creative Arts initiated the project and supports many of the 

activities within the space and the Creative Canterbury team at Canterbury City Council off ered Beach 

House on a short-term lease as a temporary venue through the Creative Development team.

MIMS

Music in Mortimer Street - MIMS 

MIMS is a collective term for the 

concerts that are held throughout 

the year at The United Church 

in Mortimer Street. The term is 

used to try to encompass the 

large range and variety of content 

– from swing band to classical 

trios, cathedral organists to choral 

groups, piano recitals to brass 

bands and off ering all musical 

styles from Bach to Bacharach. 

As part of the festival week there 

will be a number of additional 

concerts on off er – and we are 

very excited to see them feature in 

the programme. On Saturday 18 

August, David Ruddock 

gives a piano recital and on 

Thursday 23 August, the Director 

of Music at Liverpool Cathedral, 

David Poulter, gives an organ 

recital. 

In addition to this there will be 

FREE one-hour lunch time organ 

concerts taking place every day, 

from Monday 20 to Saturday 25, 

starting at 12.30pm. There are 

refreshments available in the 

church from 12pm to 2pm and 

people are welcome to enter or 

leave recitals at any time.

Herne Bay Carnival 

A fantastic day out for all the 

family – come and see fl oats and 

perfomers in this annual procession 

through the town. Miss Herne 

Bay will tour the town on her fl oat 

from 11am with her court. Judging 

for fl oats at 5pm on Western 

Esplanade. Pedestrian and children’s 

fancy dress judging will take place 

at Lane End Gardens at 4.45pm, 

with the procession starting at 6pm. 

The Carnival Dance at the Kings 

Hall commences at 8pm with live 

entertainment from 70s style rock 

band Kelly’s Heros, tickets £4. Entry

believed this is why Herne Bay 

Beach Hut Owners Association 

scooped the UK’s best beach hut 

owners association award 2011

Breitling Wingwalkers 

The Breitling Wingwalkers are seen 

live by over six million spectators 

each year in the UK alone. They 

perform a breathtaking sequence 

of acrobatic manoeuvres and 

handstands whilst strapped to the 

top wings of the team’s beautiful 

Boeing Stearman biplanes. The 

team fl y the aircraft through a 

well rehearsed energetic routine 

of dazzling aerobatics and close 

formation fl ypasts as the wingwalkers 

wave at the crowd. These 

manoeuvres include, loops, rolls, 

stall turns and even inverted fl ight! 

During all of this, the wingwalkers 

experience speeds of up to 150 

mph and ‘G’ forces of up to 4G! 

Old Flying Machine 

Company Spitfire and 

Mustang Duo 

Spitfi re Mk IXB 

The most famous military aircraft 

of all time and one of the most 

beautiful ever built, the Spitfi re is 

perhaps chiefl y remembered as 

the symbol of the Battle of Britain. 

The Spitfi re was developed by 

Supermarine R.J Mitchell, and was 

the only British type in continuous 

construction throughout World 

War II. During WWII, thanks to 

constant improvements and 

modifi cations, the Spitfi re was 

never outclassed as a short-ranged 

piston-engined interceptor apart 

from a brief period in 1941to1942, 

when it fi rst encountered the 

Focke-Wulf FW-190. When 

production fi nally ceased in 1949, 

more than 22,000 Spitfi res and 

Seafi res (the naval version of the 

Spitfi re) had been built in some 40 

diff erent variants. 

Mustang P-51D 

The P-51 was the most successful 

long-range fi ghter escort of 

World War II. The fi rst P-51s were 

built with Allison engines; these 

aircraft were remarkable at low 

altitudes, but were considered 

under-powered and disappointing 

at higher altitudes. In late 1942 

the P-51 was transformed when, 

in the UK, Rolls Royce Merlin 

engines were tested in place of 

the Allison. The Merlin, as used 

in the Spitfi re, was then licensebuilt 

by Packard in the USA and 

in 1943 was installed in the P-51B 

and C models. The Merlin made 

the 1944 P-51D, with its bubble 

canopy and six-guns, possibly the 

most beautiful and potent fi ghter 

of the time. The P-51D’s range was 

an incredible 2,055m (3,327km) 

with a level maximum speed of 

437mph (703kph) at 25,000 feet; 

the max diving speed was 505mph 

(818kph). Its huge fuel capacity 

was 1,000 litres internally and 

815 litres in drop tanks. Its service 

ceiling was 41,900 feet (12,800m). 

Red Bull Matadors 

The team is made up of one of 

the UK’s most dynamic aerobatic 

teams, featuring top British pilots: 

Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones. 

Paul and Steve have performed all 

over the UK and Europe, touring 

China, Japan and the Middle East 

in the FAI World Grand Prix series: 

an aerobatic competition with solo 

and formation categories which 

has been running since 1997. The 

Matadors have scooped three 

gold and two silver medals in the 

formation category, including a 

Gold medal at the 2004 World 

Grand Prix in Al Ain, UAE. 

The Red Bull Matadors builds on 

Red Bull’s considerable pedigree 

in air sports. Aerobatic fl ight is 

the domain of only the most 

experienced and talented pilots, 

with superior powers of mental 

focus. The Red Bull Matador display 

is designed to demonstrate the 

truly remarkable performance 

of the Sukhoi aircraft, fl ying in a 

variety of formation patterns.

Fiery Finale 

Join the pirates as they say goodbye to their 

ship with this spectacular fi ery fi nale! This 

sculpture has been created by international 

artist Robert Bradford, who created the 

fantastic Poseidon and Burning Man 

sculptures at the festival in 1995-6. We are 

delighted to welcome Robert back for our 

anniversary programme. This event is an 

absolute must see – do not miss out!!

Monster Crab Catching 

Competition 

One of the festival’s favourite 

events! Come and dangle a line 

from the pier and try to catch the 

heaviest crab, or angle for one of 

the specially marked crabs that 

have been placed in the water! 

There are prizes to be won for 

both categories. Please bring 

16 metres of fi shing line, a small 

weight and a container or bucket 

to keep your crab in. Fish heads 

and squid are off ered as bait at 

the start. All crabs get to go back 

in the water after the weigh-in.

St Georges Cup and 

Festival Race - a Pursuit Sailing Race. 

In a pursuit race the slowest boat starts fi rst and the faster boats start 

at various times after this according to their handicap. The handicap 

system is called a Portsmouth Yardstick and is designed so that boats 

of diff erent speeds can race against each other. At the end of the race 

the boat that is in the leading position having sailed the same number

Kent Coastal Band 

The Kent Coastal Band is a 

dedicated group of 45 members 

that are based in Herne Bay, and 

have been performing regularly 

since 1992. The band members 

range from students to teachers, 

accountants to oyster fi shermen, 

mechanics to magistrates, aged 

from 12 to 70, but all are united 

under the baton of the musical 

director, Paul Valentine. In the 

pursuit of providing something 

for everyone, the band’s concerts 

regularly contain traditional 

marches, classical works, popular 

selections, and modern pieces.

Pier Trust 

The reopened Herne Bay Pier will 

be a popular venue for the visitors 

coming to enjoy the festival. The 

pier has always been a traditional 

part of the town’s seaside fun and 

celebration and this year will be no 

exception. The Pier Trust is planning 

to bring back Herne Bay’s much 

loved roller-skating activity to the 

pier this summer, various food and 

shopping opportunities, a café and 

sun deck to soak in the sun, the sea 

air and a range of entertainment. 

With the support of Canterbury 

Council, the Pier Trust is raising 

funds through sponsorship and 

a series of events on the pier this 

summer in order to bring the pier 

platform to life again with traditional 

seaside features such as a retail 

beach huts, a stage, fl ags, lights, 

planters and lots of seats.
