The <strong>ADDY</strong> Awards Competition is the industry’s largest and most comprehensive program for<br />

recognizing creative excellence. Each year we strive to showcase the best in creative talent within our<br />

Philadelphia advertising community.<br />

Judges<br />

Dave currently serves as one of the lead creatives on Dove’s<br />

global Campaign for Real Beauty. Before Ogilvy, he spent a<br />

good portion of his career at the Leap Partnership writing for<br />

Michelob and other esteemed brands. He’s also done time at<br />

BBDO and a variety of small agencies you’ve never heard of in<br />

his native downstate Illinois (his formative years).<br />

His work has ranged from beauty to beer and has been<br />

recognized by The One Show, Communication Arts, Cannes,<br />

ANDYs, Clios, National <strong>ADDY</strong> Awards, London International<br />

Awards and a few others he’s probably forgetting. In his spare<br />

time, Dave enjoys life’s simple pleasures: playing with his<br />

children, relaxing with a fine cigar, and writing about himself in<br />

the third person.<br />

John Parker<br />

Creative Director<br />

Wieden + Kennedy, New York, NY<br />

John’s first interest was art, until at his banker father’s insistence<br />

that he “get a real job,” he discovered advertising. Over the past<br />

nine years, John created work for some of the country’s best<br />

agencies. He even lived in a Toronto IKEA for three weeks as<br />

part of an immersion project. John has produced ads for ESPN,<br />

Volkswagen, Gap, Google, MINI, Burger King, Truth, Red Bull<br />

and Virgin Atlantic.<br />

John has been praised for his work by the New York Times, USA<br />

Today, 20/20, Maxim Magazine and VH1’s Best Week Ever. He<br />

has received awards from the One Show, the Clios, ANDYs,<br />

the <strong>ADDY</strong> Awards, Communication Arts and D&AD. Career<br />

highlights include a Gold Lion from Cannes for the Burger King<br />

“Whopperettes” campaign and a $100,000 Kelly Grand Prize for<br />

the Molson Beer “Tools” print campaign.


Rob Sweetman<br />

Partner, Creative Director<br />

Rethink, Vancouver, BC<br />

Rob began his advertising career in 1999, after failing miserably<br />

at almost everything else he tried. In 2003, he joined Rethink in<br />

Vancouver where he works on accounts including: Solo Mobile,<br />

Science World, Sirius Satellite Radio, and the BC Lions Football <strong>Club</strong>.<br />

Rob has been ranked the top-awarded art director in Canada for the<br />

last two years by Strategy Magazine. Rob’s work has been honored with<br />

One Show pencils, Lions, Clios, and at D&AD and Communications<br />

Arts. He even had a commercial featured on the Maury Povich Show.<br />

In his spare time Rob draws dolphins with his two young daughters.<br />

Rebecca Williams<br />

Senior Vice President, Chief Creative Officer<br />

UniWorld Group, New York, NY<br />

Rebecca has nearly 20 years experience in creating award-winning,<br />

innovative campaigns for General Market, Urban Market and African<br />

American Market consumer audiences. She has created compelling<br />

advertising for AT&T, Burger King, Lincoln Mercury, Pillsbury, Planned<br />

Parenthood of NYC, Heublein, Coors Brewing Company, M&M Mars,<br />

Ford Motor Company, Avon, Walt Disney World and Reebok.<br />

Rebecca founded Hot Sauce, a boutique agency, in the late 1990s. She<br />

was instrumental in the 2000 re-launch of hair care Carson Products<br />

Company’s core brand, Dark & Lovely. Hot Sauce also created an<br />

energetic campaign of steamy television commercials for Bally Total<br />

Fitness. In addition, Rebecca worked on Fox Sports, Soft Sheen<br />

Products, McDonald’s, Miller Brewing, and L’Oreal Feria hair color.<br />

Brandon Wilson<br />

Interactive Creative Director<br />

Bernstein-Rein, Kansas City, MO<br />

Brandon has been a designer for the majority of his life. He entered the<br />

industry eight years ago having worked on print and logo work while<br />

immersed in the snow sports culture. Having close relationships with<br />

his corporate sponsors, he was able to offer input regarding design.<br />

Brandon launched his own line of apparel (++alycium.com) geared<br />

toward the skateboard and snowboard lifestyle, most recently releasing<br />

a full outerwear snow program.<br />

Brandon has received numerous awards from Graphis, Rockport<br />

Publishers, the <strong>ADDY</strong> Awards: receiving the Yahoo! Big Idea Chair<br />

award and Best of Show for Interactive at the 2005 National <strong>ADDY</strong><br />

Awards competition, and a feature spot in the art of can for an<br />

interactive sculpture piece. Brandon’s areas of expertise include: online<br />

identity, web and motion graphic design work.

Ellen Yin is co-owner of Fork Restaurant,<br />

the acclaimed New American bistro in Old City,<br />

Philadelphia. Since opening in 1997, Fork has<br />

received many regional and national accolades<br />

including being named one of Philadelphia’s<br />

“Top Tables” by Gourmet Magazine. In 2004, she<br />

expanded Fork to include Fork:etc, a specialty<br />

food store offering prepared foods and artisanal<br />

and gourmet products. Now celebrating its tenth<br />

anniversary, Fork continues to delight new visitors<br />

from throughout the world as well as its own local<br />

fans. Her last cookbook, From Our Restaurant’s<br />

Kitchen, a compilation of the restaurant’s recipes<br />

and staff favorites, benefited scholarships for<br />

inner-city students.<br />

This isn’t the first-and certainly won’t be the<br />

last-discussion on how we can lure a lost generation<br />

into the daily newspaper. When your<br />

mission as a business is to solve that alwayschanging<br />

puzzle, it’s a neverending<br />

conversation.<br />

The most important finding<br />

we have made at Metro is<br />

that “young” does not equal<br />

“dumb.” Our readers are savvy<br />

and demand not only a product<br />

that informs, but challenges<br />

them to think, encourages<br />

them to laugh, and provokes<br />

them into picking up the next<br />

day’s edition.<br />

By presenting the day’s news in a conciseyet<br />

compelling-way, we can bring the 20- and<br />

30-something reader into the newspaper. But<br />

simply boiling down a day’s worth of news<br />

won’t cut it.<br />

Our readers can control their news, with personalized<br />

Web pages, blogs dedicated to news<br />

that’s specific to their lives, and myriad other<br />

resources ranging from KYW Newsradio to the<br />

Daily Show. We must tap into that by determining<br />

what’s important to them, explain why it’s<br />

important to them, and then convince them, over<br />

time, to trust us to be their No. 1 source of relevant<br />

news every morning.<br />

This is done using the “relevance” prism, where<br />

every news decision is based on the question:<br />

“Why does this matter to me?” It drives the<br />

placement of stories. It drives the way we write<br />

stories. It drives our reporters to seek out this<br />

type of story. And once it is established, it will<br />

drive our readers to our pages daily.<br />

In the Entertainment and Features sections, it’s<br />

important to stick to a similar concept. Our readers<br />

want hands on: “How can I use Metro’s content<br />

to help me? ”Where to go, what to do, why<br />

you’ll love this band. It all adds up to an entertainment<br />

section that’s useful and different than<br />

anything else out there, because every bit of in-<br />

formation is carefully selected and even more<br />

meticulously written, to appeal to the readers<br />

who will learn that if they read it in Metro, they<br />

know they can count on having a good time.<br />

Beyond the editorial content of a<br />

newspaper, it’s vital to sell that<br />

content to readers. Short stories<br />

are just the start. We need to design<br />

our elements to maximize<br />

the information and make it as<br />

easy to read as possible.<br />

Information boxes, graphics,<br />

pull quotes all invite the reader<br />

into stories.<br />

Every entry point should be considered<br />

carefully, questioned for its ability to<br />

pique a reader’s interest.<br />

When it comes to conveying a tone that resonates,<br />

finding a middle ground in a market with<br />

clearly defined voices-whether stodgy, emotional,<br />

bitter or cynical (depending on what you’re<br />

reading)-we need speak to our reader.<br />

It’s a blend of skepticism and intelligence. It’s<br />

a sharp wit that challenges them to think, and<br />

rewards them when they “get it.” This obviously<br />

changes from section to section, and is more<br />

blatant in entertainment than news, but even<br />

there, it would be foolish to dismiss the success<br />

of shows such as the Daily Show and Colbert<br />

Report. We must develop an appealing news<br />

voice while maintaining respect for the serious<br />

nature of the subject matter.<br />

When it all adds up, amazingly we find that the<br />

worst thing we can do is try too hard to make<br />

a newspaper designed for a 25-year old. They<br />

spot a gimmick from a mile away and it’s a brutal<br />

turnoff. Instead, we have to concentrate on<br />

building a newsgathering organization that understands<br />

the mission from top to bottom. And<br />

when that happens, not only will we welcome an<br />

entire generation back to our newspapers, we’ll<br />

have their parents hopping aboard, too.
