3.2 How does it work ?<br />

Acquisition is performed with a CMOS camera.<br />
3.2.2 Image Processing and Features Detection<br />
Image processing and features detection is a threefold process:<br />

− First, the software analyzes the grayscale image. The image is then filtered in order to<br />
remove ‘noise’ and obtain the best-binarized image as possible, thereby facilitating the<br />
detection of bifurcations, endings and other minutiae characteristics.<br />
− Second, the software uses the binarized image to determine the ‘skeleton’ of the fingerprint<br />
image, thus creating skeletons for ridges and valleys.<br />
− Third, the system produces a minutiae list – biometric template - obtained after analysis of<br />
the two skeletons.<br />
The biometric template is a mathematical representation of the original fingerprint based on the<br />
analysis of the ridge patterns. The template maximum size is 256 bytes 1 and is used during the<br />
matching process to compare it against previously stored templates.<br />
