The last financial year was marked by one of the most dramatic
global financial crises in history. The unprecedented collapse
of financial markets around the world and dried-up credit markets
came as a shock to investors and companies alike. It was a
painful reminder to all that we can never fully eliminate risk. But
dealing with risk and the emerging opportunities is part and
parcel of the work we do, overcoming crisis situations and laying
the ground for new things to come. We want to illustrate this
idea with an incident from Swiss history: the Goldau rockslide of
1806 – a once-in-a-century catastrophe.
