A letter from our Principal
Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Luers High School,
It is unbelievable how quickly the school year passes. We are
well into second quarter and staring Thanksgiving and
Christmas right in the face. Our year is going well. We
continue to hold parent teacher conferences at the end of
first quarter. Although most high schools have abandoned
this practice, we usually meet with about 60-70% of our
parents. It is a joy to see that many of our parents are
Luers grads!
As we were last year, Bishop Luers High School is again this
year named as an exemplary school (A rating) by the
Indiana Department of Education. This honor is due to the
work, dedication, and care that our teachers display. In
math, on the End of Course Assessment (ECA), the State
passing average is 77%. Bishop Luers High School
students scored 92.7%. In English, the State average on
the (ECA) is 77% passing. Bishop Luers High School
students scored 87%. We also demonstrated
improvement based on the number of our students who
passed I-Step in the 8th grade compared to the number of
students who passed the math and English ECA at Bishop
Luers. We earned bonus points based on the number of
students who, after not passing the ECA in English by the
end of 10th grade, had passed the exam by graduation.
A school’s graduation rate can be lowered based on the
number of students who began as 9th graders at a high
school, withdrew, and do not show that they registered at
another school. Bishop Luers was pleased to announce
that every senior who was in our school in May of 2012,
did indeed graduate. Based on the above rubric, however,
our graduation rate was 96% compared to the State
average of 85%.
The last criterion to be judged is College and Career
readiness. Although it did not hurt our A ranking, it is an
area upon which we can improve.
BLHS KNIGHT NEWS PAGE 2
This section is based on
the percentage of
Advanced Placement
(AP), International
Baccalaureate, Dual
Credit, or Industry
Certification of student
success. The State goal
is 25%. We scored
25.8% which gave us the
maximum number of points, but we want to increase the
number of students who earn a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP
exams. Bishop Luers High School offers AP courses in
English and Literature 12, calculus, biology, US history,
economics, and chemistry. These are rigorous courses
that enable a student to earn college credit provided they
score high enough on the end of course exam. Bishop
Luers also offers dual credit courses. Students pay a
nominal fee to the college, and take courses that enable
them to earn credit at Bishop Luers and at college. We
work with the University of St. Francis for a dual credit in
theology and with IPFW for dual credit courses in
psychology, pre-calculus, business, and theater.
Several of our students spend a morning or an afternoon at
Anthis Career Center learning a trade. These may include
computer programming, firefighting, welding, or
construction, to name a few. These students remain
students at Bishop Luers High School; however, this is
another way to prepare them for the world after
graduation.
A blessed Thanksgiving and Christmas season to each of you.
Sincerely,
Mary Keefer
Congratulations
Bishop Luers Distinguished Knights!
Jim Saul, class of ’63, Outstanding Alumnus and Diane Karst,
Honorary Alumna.
Jim Saul is the epitome of Luers Spirit. He has lived out the saying, "once a Knight, always a Knight." His strong
faith, loyalty to Catholic education and a love of the south side of Fort Wayne make him the perfect recipient for this
award. Not only is Jim a Luers graduate, but he
also sent nine children to Bishop Luers. He has
volunteered his time in the athletic department,
the music department and the development
office. Mr. Saul lives a life of integrity, respect,
responsibility, humility and hard work, all values
instilled in him while he attended Bishop Luers
High School. His son says that Jim is the
quintessential Knight.
It is because of Diane Karst’s
extraordinary dedication, support and service to
Bishop Luers High School and to her community
that she was selected as the 2012 Outstanding
Honorary Alumnus. Her students and the school
have been Diane’s number one priority as she
works tirelessly throughout the year as Luers
math department chair, math instructor and BLHS Assistant Athletic Director. Ms. Karst is also very active in St. Jude
Parish where she serves as a Eucharist Minister. Diane is very humble about her skills and talents and often says that
the Bishop Luers staff and students make her better every day.
The Distinguished Knight Award
Homecoming 2012
BLHS KNIGHT NEWS PAGE 4
It was a perfect, yet typical, football Friday. The sun was shining, the air was
brisk, and leaves were changing from bright summer green to warm autumn colors.
Students all across the city occupied their high school parking lots discussing plans for the evening.
People fled their offices excited for the weekend ahead. Football teams began boarding their buses,
cheerleaders began the primping process, and the band members began to tune their instruments. However, on the grounds
of Bishop Luers, it wasn’t just any Friday football game, it was Homecoming 2012!
Alumni, students, family, and friends assembled in the school’s gymnasium to kick off Homecoming in true Luers fashion with
Mass. Once our prayers were in, it was time to eat! There is no better way to start a game than with a delicious tailgate dinner.
Families gathered underneath a big white tent, devoured delicious food, listened to the music of the Bishop Luers Pep Band,
and cheered on our Knights as they trotted down the sidewalk from the locker room to the field ready to take on the Redskins of
North Side High School.
As the game neared the end, Knight Victory cheers could be heard from miles around. As usual, students began to leave the
premise, but on this occasion, the Alumni kept the celebration party going! The big white tent that had served as home to the
tailgate party prior to the game was now transformed into a space for entertaining Bishop Luers alumni of all ages! If people
weren’t flooding the dance floor to hear the amazing vocal stylings of Vince Saul, 1990 alumni and lead singer of the band
“Greta Speaks,” they were mingling with old classmates, sitting by the bonfire, or dabbling into the amazing appetizers and
drinks that were being served.
There is no doubt that Luers Spirit was alive and well for Homecoming 2012. The event brought together all branches of the
Luers family and reminded us how lucky we are to be parts of such a wonderful community. Cheers to all who made this year’s
homecoming a night to remember! Let’s do it again next year! By Laura Booker, class of 2005
This year we had another great turnout and it was a perfect day,
weather-wise, for the event. Our raffle was a huge success, with
some of the best gift packages we've ever had. A special thanks to
all the players who come out every year. Guys travel from all over
the country in memory of Mark, and this year's game was
extremely exciting, going into overtime. It's also great to see that
so many people will still come out and support our cause, and
remember a friend in Mark. Ryne Daley, class of 2003
30 players on our roster and have a Varsity and JV
squad. Our head coach is Luers grad, Eric Frentz
’08 with Lonny Nichter ’98 as assistant coach. One
of the many highlights of our year
will be the Homestead game on May
13 th at Indiana Tech. Last year we
held an end of the year alumni vs.
continue that tradition and hope that
any alum will contact me for more
Alumni Spotlight
In the coming months, thousands of college students
will graduate to the “real world” where they will be faced with
the daunting task of acting like a professional.
Hopefully, these young professionals had an internship that
taught them how to succeed in the competitive working world.
This column, however, isn’t about how to gain meaningful
experience at an internship. It is meant for the careless type,
who wishes merely to fulfill an internship credit and gain
absolutely no professional experience.
For that guy or gal, I offer these tips:
1. Ignore criticism and continue doing things
your way. Why listen to professionals who are successful
and know what they are doing? Instead, do things the way
you—with no professional experience—think they should be
done and assume everyone else is wrong.
2. Sit around and relax while you wait for
your next assignment. Hurry and finish a task and
then avoid your supervisor until he or she notices that you
aren’t doing anything. That way you can get by with doing the
least amount of work and have nothing to show in your
portfolio.
3. Give half an effort—it’s only an internship.
You might be an unpaid intern, whose work isn’t expected to
be perfect. So why try? Sloppily get things done and show
your supervisor you couldn’t care less.
4. Huff and puff over grunt work. Throw a fit
when you’re given less meaningful tasks to complete. That
way you will show your supervisor you can’t complete small
tasks without having a tantrum, so you aren’t ready for larger,
more significant assignments.
5. Don’t ask questions; instead, assume you
will do it right. When you get an assignment that you
don’t understand, just guess and never ask for clarification.
6. Constantly refresh social media sites on
your computer and smart phone. Obviously, your
Dear Luers alum,
social life is more important than anything
else. End of story. If you are asked to
complete an assignment, make sure you
By,
Megan
Skelly,
class of
2008
refresh Twitter at least seven times before getting started.
7. Just get up and leave when it’s time for
you to go. Never check in with your supervisor when you
are about to leave because he or she might give you more
work to do. Instead, the minute it’s time for you to leave, just
charge out the door without saying a word.
8. Don’t make friends. Be mean to everyone and roll
your eyes or ignore anyone who is nice to you. If you must
communicate, be short and emotionless in your response. It’s
not important to make friends, you are here to complete an
internship and move on.
9. Talk all the time and share every detail of
your life. Stop whoever walks by your desk and tell them
about your friend’s sister’s cousin who recently broke up with
her boyfriend. It doesn’t matter that you’re at work and trying
to actually, you know, work.
10. Never say a word and sneakily linger
around others. Sneak around the office without being
noticed. If you are asked your opinion in a meeting, pretend
you are mute. That way they will never know if you have a
good thought or idea.
So, careless interns, if you wish to gain absolutely nothing
from your internship experience, except for maybe a few
gruesome recommendations, follow these tips closely. And
don’t forget to scowl at your supervisor every morning.
[Editor's note: Unlike the people described in this article,
Megan Skelly, the author of this story, has been described as
a "dream intern" by her superiors.]
I've been an officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department for
11 years and a patrolman K9 handler for 3 and half years with
my partner Bullet. After I was hired by the FWPD, I attended a
20-week police academy in Fort Wayne.
After receiving the bid for the K9, Bullet and I went through a 13
week K9 academy. During the K9 academy we work towards
certifying with the North American Police Work Dog
Association (NAPWDA). Bullet and I are certified in narcotic
detection and utility. Utility consists of obedience, building
search, tracking, article search, area search and aggression control. We constantly train in
order to keep our skills sharp. We certify in each phase (narcotic and utility) once a year.
Bullet is a 6-year -old Dutch shepherd and is the only female of the 10 K9's on FWPD. Bullet lives with me at home and
I take her to work with me every day. She has a long line of police dogs in her family. Sister Remy works for the New
Haven Police Department, brother Stryker on the Columbia City Police Department and a brother on the Jeffersonville
Police Department.
Last spring I spoke in several classrooms explaining my career as a patrolman. When I was asked about Luers I
responded, “Luers taught me to keep God and my faith number one. Another value I learned at Luers is that it is
important to be fair and consistent with the people you work or deal with. By Gary Griffith
Kayleigh said, “When I heard that I had been
Knowing that my tuition was being covered in full
made me extremely grateful to the Bails because
I felt that I could now get a first rate education
Each year Bishop Luers receives hundreds of applications for
scholarships and financial aid. Recipients show their
appreciation as well as their gratitude for having the opportunity
to attend Bishop Luers High School.
At the beginning of the process of choosing my high
question. Thanks to the scholarship from the class
of 1971, I am attending Bishop Luers High School
and I thoroughly enjoy it.
Joseph Davis received the Thomas Eckrich
LuersKnight is a Dinner/Auction held in April in the
transformed gymnasium at Bishop Luers. All the money
raised at LuersKnight is used for tuition assistance and
operating costs for the entire school. The cost to educate
one child at Bishop Luers is $7023. A registered active
Catholic student’s tuition and fees are $5840. A portion of the
money raised at LuersKnight helps make up this $1183
difference. The other percentage is utilized for technology,
student desks, needs-based tuition assistance, smart
boards and teacher professional development. LuersKnight
benefits every student at Bishop Luers High School.
Be a Volunteer
Hundreds of volunteers are needed to make this a
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT LUERS!
BISHOP LUERS STAFF RETREAT:
The faculty and staff of Bishop Luers High School began the
new school year with a retreat in earlier August. Bishop John
M. D’Arcy presented the retreat in the context of daily prayer.
After proclaiming the gospel of John, chapter 21:15-19, Bishop
asked those gathered the same question Jesus asked Simon
Peter, “Do you love me?” Bishop D’Arcy reminded us that our
ministry as teachers and staff here at Bishop Luers is our
response to Jesus question, “Do you love me?” Catholic school
faculty and staff members are a constant testimony that Jesus
lives. The mission of a Catholic school is to evangelize,
catechize, and educate students in Christ, nurturing loving
service to God and neighbor. Bishop D’Arcy mentioned several
young Olympic competitors who recently gave witness to their
experience of being Catholic school students and how that is
impacting their lives. Without doubt, ministering in a Catholic
school is a vocation, rather than an occupation. The retreat
continued with Benediction. Father Ben Muhlenkamp, and
Father Larry Kramer joined Bishop D’Arcy to provide
opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation before the
final prayers and blessing. Thank you to our three wonderful
priest chaplains for making this retreat possible as we began
our new school year!
OPENING ALL-SCHOOL MASS & BLESSING OF STAFF
AND STUDENTS As is our tradition, we began the school year
with all-school Mass on Friday, September 7, 2012. Priest
of Mass, Father Muhlenkamp blessed the students and staff for
the new school year. After all-school Masses, alumni,
grandparents and parents are welcome to join us for coffee in
the concession stand area.
Business
Leaders of
America had
the privilege
Friday,
November 2, 2012, to attend the FBLA National Fall
Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. This
conference was BLHS FBLA’s first time at one of the National
Fall Leadership Conferences. This conference was full of
seminars, group activities, fundraising ideas, scholarship
opportunities, learning and understanding failure and learning
to be a great and outstanding leader. A leader must be there
for his/her group or club and must be able to listen and
understand, accept failure and to be able to do what is
necessary and beneficial to the group. “We had a lot of fun
and learned many interesting things,” Katie Yagodinski said
enthusiastically. As pictured above, Julia Hayes, Nathan
Grabner, Sam Stein, and Katie Yagodinski, were chosen to
attend this conference along with advisor Mr. Matt Lazzaro.
Bishop Luers High School is proud to begin the school
year with 10 international students, with 2 more coming to us
for second semester. We have always been open to
accepting students from other countries to study in the United
States with us. Our staff and students find great value in the
cultural experiences these students share about their
countries and their way of life. They bring yet another added
dimension to our diverse student body; every year we learn
new ways of looking at the world because of them!
With us this year are the following students: Johnson
Zhai from Germany, Yujie “Jason” Wan from China, Hanna
Luise Schmid from Germany, Yezhi Gong from China, Xuerui
“Shirley” Hu from China, Tung Nguyen from Vietnam, Tranh
semester, we will be welcoming two students from Ghana,
West Africa – Benjamin Haruna and Emmanuel Adu. We are
excited about the cultural enrichment these students bring to
our Bishop Luers community. We learn so much from them,
……..”I think we can all agree that “To Kill a Mockingbird” is
one of the most iconic books in the history of literature.
The reason why “To Kill a Mockingbird” is such a treasured
American classic is because the lesson that it teaches is still
being taught today. The truth is that all men are not created
equal. We all have our gifts and our talents. Some are rich and
some are poor; some are black and some are white; some
have opportunities in life handed to them from birth and some
have to work hard to get where they want to be”…. This
excerpt is from the essay “Changed by a mockingbird” written
by Bishop Luers junior, Anna Stachofsky. To read the entire
essay, visit our website www.bishopluers.org
“A Knight’s Prayer” by Haley Brooks,
sophomore at Bishop Luers
When I find myself down and out,
And ready to scream and shout,
There is no denying an animal of fear inside of me is ready
to unleash.
I turn to Christ who strengthens me.
Once I know I can no longer stand,
And feel my worn-out faith ready to disband,
I crash to my battered and bruised knees.
I turn to Christ who strengthens me.
As soon as times get tough,
And my shattered heart has had enough,
Tears flood from my deep brown eyes like a never-ending
leak.
I turn to Christ who strengthens me.
I feel the pounding in my aching head,
As I state the powerful and comforting words in red.
I pray the Lord my wearied soul to keep.
I turn to Christ who strengthens me.
When I feel there is no way through my strife,
I look to the way, the truth, and the life.
All will come out all right if I just believe.
I turn to Christ who strengthens me.
I turn to Christ who strengthens me.
Dear Friends of Bishop Luers,
The Ties That Bind Us
When asked to write a short piece for this newsletter thanking
all the Bishop Luers alumni for their generous support of the
2012 Annual Fund, I was at a loss for words. "Always thank
people for their gifts seven times," I recall from my
philanthropy training days. So, I am writing to say “thank
you.”
I put off writing this piece because I got "busy" with life's
chores and flow of events.
* I became reacquainted with old friends, now also retired,
who enjoyed the game of Mah Jongg -- also Luers grads...
* I found a new dental hygienist and dentist -- both Luers
grads...
* I joined a bible study class at church -- and found more
Luers grads...
*The neighbor’s children found our door asking for support for
Walkathon or various sport team sales and we learned how
many neighbors were Luers grads...
* A grade school/Luers grad friend, who had moved away 40
plus years ago came to visit and so we gathered together a
few more Luers grads to have a mini reunion...
* We found fellow Luers grads on facebook and when travel
took us where the conductivity for Luers Live on Friday night
was absent, the FB friends kept us posted on the score...
I mention these instances merely to demonstrate that Bishop
Luers High School provided us with the "ties that bind us" and
the gift of firendships. That commonality was woven
throughout our discussions, gatherings, and interests.
For those of you reading this from afar, let me assure you
your alma mater is alive and doing well. It is what this former
urban planner would call "an anchor institution" on the south
side of Fort Wayne. You can
still hear a pin drop if you are in
the halls during class times.
You still feel pride when a
current student, sporting "the
shirt" proclaiming "We are the
light of the world" holds the
door for you at the grocery
store.
The financial need, however, is
great to keep our high school
alma mater academically
proficient in educating the
student of today. The cost of
technology upgrades alone is a
constant financial challenge.
As a fairly recent addition to the
alumni committee, I can share
how amazed I am to see the
strong commitment to Bishop Luers from students, faculty,
and especially from parents sacrificing to send their children
to a Catholic school -- many of whom are NOT Luers grads!
Again I say thank you to all of your alumni and friends who
share your time, talent, and financial resources with Bishop
Luers.
I know we can do so much more. If you have never given
before, and I know these are challenging times, would you
consider a small gift to your high school alma mater?
Bishop Luers provided us with the ties that bind us together,
let us use them for the good of the school today. Your
investment will pay great dividends. Thank you.
needs of our aging school. Thank you.
On behalf of Bishop Luers High School, please know how grateful we are for your continued support through your generous
gifts of time, talent and treasure. Because of your kindness and faith in Bishop Luers, students have the opportunity to
receive the Catholic education they desire, students have improved technology and equipment in their classrooms, and
students have continued to learn the importance of service and sharing of their faith.
Congratulations to the class of 1976 for once again leading the Annual Fund giving for the fourth year in a row!
This year our goal for the 2013 Annual Fund is to raise $62,000 and to increase our donor participation. The 2013 Annual
Fund brochures will be mailed in December. If we have the same address for alumni from the same family, the household
may receive more than one copy of the brochure. We are asking all alumni to consider a donation to the Annual Fund. If
you are the head of a household who has received multiple brochures, please forward the brochure to the alumni for whom it
was intended. The Alumni Department is constantly updating addresses. If you have updated alumni addresses, you can
contact the Alumni Department at 260-456-1261 ext. 3040 or email Melissa Hire at mhire@bishopluers.org.
Again, on behalf of Bishop Luers High School, the students, and the families we serve, thank you so very much.
The gift of a scholarship to a student and his/her family can make all the difference in the world. Some students would not be able
to attend Bishop Luers High School without need-based tuition assistance or scholarships. If you are interested in establishing a
scholarship for Luers students, you can do so in honor of a family member, your company, your graduating class, or as a
memorial, etc. Please contact the Development Office at 260-456-1261.
MEMORIAL DONATIONS
Each year the Bishop Luers community is saddened by the loss of our own family members. To honor their memory, memorial
donations are made in their name. Donations can be made at anytime and are used to support our tuition assistance program.
Memorial donations are helping to support families that want a Catholic education for their child but struggle with full tuition.
TUITION ASSISTANCE
These donations are made through the LuersKnight Bishop’s Auction and Adopt-A-Knight. Adopt-A-Knight donations are
needed throughout the school year and can be made at anytime. In the 2011-2012 school year 66% of our families received
tuition assistance. With the need for tuition assistance increasing we continue to work on raising funds to support our families in
need. Investing in the young men and women of today is investing in the future.
