Teaching Children to
Respect Animals Has
Far-Reaching Affects
Mark Goldstein, DVM,
president of the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
with his dog Ren.
In this issue of our quarterly AnimalFare newsletter we will be taking you on a quick trip through the educational programs
we offer to children here at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. On the surface, the offering of humane
education programs for youth may appear to be simply educating and entertaining children with and about animals.
However, teaching children to respect animals has a much more extensive and far-reaching affect on the lives of children
and the health of our community as a whole.
There is a valid link between the way people treat animals and the way they treat their fellow human beings. Studies
have shown and FBI statistics have confirmed that children who abuse or hurt animals have a much greater chance of
growing up to hurt or abuse other people. Engraved on our arches at the campus is Ghandi’s quote, “the greatness of a
nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” which provides insight into why it is so important
to instill in children and the community a sense of value and respect for all living beings.
Teaching children to value animals not only encourages appreciation and positive attitudes towards all living things, it
also establishes a sense of responsibility to make the world a better, more humane place.
Mainstream child welfare advocates agree that animal abuse is just one part in the circle of societal violence. There is a
clear link between individuals who abuse animals and those who abuse other vulnerable individuals such as children and
the elderly. Recognizing that animal abuse can often be linked to child abuse and elder abuse, the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA and the San Diego Department of Social Services have established a mutual understanding that if
either organization sees or suspects the abuse of a child or an animal while they are on a call, they will report the abuse to
the other organization. This collaboration is one example in a long history of the strong connection between the fields of
human and animal welfare.
In fact, it was an animal welfare advocate who recognized the first form of child abuse. In 1874, Henry Bergh, the
founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in New York (ASPCA) extended his work
beyond the protection of animals to create new laws to prevent cruelty to children. With Bergh’s help, laws were created to
help prevent cruelty to animals, but at the time there were no laws protecting children from abusive homes. In a renowned
trial, Bergh won the release of a young girl from her abusive foster parents and helped form the New York Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC).
Countless people and animals have been helped by the works of animal advocates worldwide who have recognized the
importance of child and animal welfare throughout the years.
This spring and summer, close to 450 children in San Diego will attend our Animal Adventure Camp, a day camp,
where they will have a fun and exciting time learning all about animals through hands-on instruction and activities. When
these children participate in a camp activity, such as “How to Meet a Dog” or listen to a trainer talk about positive reinforcement
training, they will not only learn about animals, but will also become more acutely aware of the proper ways to
interact, care for, reward, and live with animals and people in our world. This is the basic foundation on which to build
the human-animal bond.
As these children grow, we hope that the seed we plant here at the San Diego Campus for Animal Care will sprout a
humane ethic towards all living beings, which will carry over into their adult lives.
At the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, it is because of help from people like you that we are able to go beyond
just caring for animals and reach out to children in the community to teach them tolerance and respect for all living beings.
We simply couldn’t do what we do without your help, so thank you for your caring and for your continued support.

“
On the surface, yes we’re teaching
children about animals,”
says Stacey Zeitlin, community
programs manager. “And that’s important.
Teaching children about animals and how
to interact with animals safely and appropriately,
these are valuable lessons. But in
teaching these skills, we’re also helping
children learn a much greater lesson – the
importance of respecting all living things.”
And, with a well-studied link established
between how people treat animals
and how they treat each other, it’s this very
lesson which may be the key to creating a
more caring community.
The young animal lovers pictured here
and on the cover of this publication are
just a few of the 60 plus children who
participated in the San Diego Humane
Society’s Spring Animal Adventure Camp,
an interactive day camp offered for children
ages five to 13, with games, crafts, handson
animal activities and service projects all
geared to help children develop respect and
a positive attitude toward all living beings.
Accredited teachers lead each class of 15 to
18 children with the help of two additional
volunteers. The student-to-adult ratio is
maintained at one teacher for five to eight
children.
In addition to the three weeks of
the Spring camp, the Humane Society
also offers a popular Summer version of
the camp for five weeks. This Summer’s
Animal Adventure Camp will take place
the weeks of July 11 to 15, July 18 to 22,
July 25 to 29, August 1 to 5, and August
8 to 12. Tuition for a one-week summer
session is $180 and all sessions are from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. If you know a child who
may be interested in Animal Adventure
Camp, be sure to sign up soon!
Hundreds of children attend this camp
each year, but the Animal Adventure
Camp is just one of the many youth
AnimalFare • Summer 2005
education programs offered through the
Humane Society.
Another celebrated program is the
Pet PALS Kid’s Club which offers great
opportunities throughout the year for
animal-loving kids, including monthly
educational events and an informative
newsletter. Started several decades ago,
this tremendous educational program
has served the humane education needs
of thousands of children throughout
the years. Today, the club has over 50
active members who participate in
monthly workshops and special events.
Membership is just $75 per year, which
includes a t-shirt, certificate, membership
card, pen, Pet PALS newsletters, and invitations
to regular club events.
New this year are kid Birthday Parties!
Young animal lovers can celebrate their
special day with friends at the Humane
Society’s beautiful campus. Each party
includes supervision and presentations
by two professional humane educators,
humane education-based games, crafts
and at least three personal animal experi-
ences. The birthday child gets to choose
which animal friends will visit his or
her party. Among the contenders are a
Russian Sand Boa snake, bearded dragons,
rats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs. The
birthday child also receives a special gift
and a photo with the animal of his or her
choice. The parties which are $175 for
15 children ($5 per additional child) are
not only a lot of fun for everyone, but
also extremely informative and the perfect
choice for young animal lovers!
Another new program, possible now
because of the Humane Society’s new
campus, is Tots and Tales, an interactive
story-time program for toddlers. A big hit
with playgroups and preschool classes, Tots
and Tales offers stories, crafts, visits with
animal friends and more and it all takes
place in the interactive “Animal House,” a
three-dimensional interpretive-educational
piece designed to help teach children how
to care for animals. There is a suggested
two-dollar donation for Tots and Tales
participants.
The Humane Society also offers a
wonderful story telling program out in the
community called Animal Tales, which
takes place at Borders Books and Music
in El Cajon and Mission Valley. Story tellers
from the Humane Society visit these
convenient locations once a month with
animal friends to share with the children.
Each session, which is free and open to the
public, includes stories, crafts and visits
with an animal.
And of course one of the Humane
Society’s most popular programs are the
Group Tours it offers to children. These
behind-the-scenes tours offer school
groups, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and
many other groups of children the ability
to learn about animals and animal welfare
all while utilizing many interactive features
of the new campus.
Humane Education Helps the Next Generation
Thousands of children in San Diego
benefit from the Humane Society’s education
programs. Last year alone, the San
Diego Humane Society reached over
3,200 children through its youth education
programs, and conducted a record
number of tours. All of these efforts are an
important part of our mission to promote
the humane treatment of animals, prevent
cruelty to animals and provide education
to enhance the human-animal bond, and
are supported by your charitable contributions.
Charly is a beautiful and sweet
seven-year-old tortoise shell kitty
looking for a new home with pet
parents that will appreciate and adore her
for the special cat she is.
We’re featuring Charly in our quarterly
AnimalFare newsletter because she’s
a sweetheart and she’s been awaiting
adoption longer than any other cat at the
Humane Society. Hopefully with a little
help from animal lovers like you, she’ll
find a wonderful home with pet parents
who will cherish and adore her and give
her the love she deserves.
With her gorgeous coat and wellmannered
ways, Charly exhibits all the
traits of a truly refined lady.
Some of Charly’s favorite activities
include sitting in her cat tree and watching
the world go by. Charly prefers not to be
picked up and would rather solicit attention
on her own terms. With that said,
when she’s in the mood, she really loves to
be pet and is quite playful too!
Many cats dislike being picked up and
carried around or having certain areas of
their bodies touched and Charly is no
exception. That’s why Charly needs a
home with pet parents who allow her to be
the princess she is, and respect her unique
likes and dislikes.
Unique and Special Kitty Seeks Perfect Match –
Are You the One?
Due to her handling preferences,
Charly would do best in an adult-only
home or a home with cat-savvy children
16 years and older. Charly would also do
best without any feline or canine companions
so that she can be the center of
attention in her new home. So if you’re
looking for a cat to shower with love and
attention, then Charly is your girl!
Charly’s ideal home would be a calm,
low-energy one without a lot of activity or
frequent visitors. She needs time to get into
a routine and become comfortable with her
new family. Then she can truly blossom
into the wonderful kitty that she is!
Charly‘s Story
Charly was raised in several different
households as an indoor-only cat where
she was not exposed to other animals and
was sometimes fearful of new people and
young children. According to her previous
pet parent, Charly is sweet and social
but needs a safe place to go to when she
becomes overwhelmed.
In August 2004, Charly’s first pet parent
decided that she was no longer able to
care for Charly and give her the home she
deserved. Charly was afraid of the toddler
in the home and had some conflict with
the other resident cat. As a result, Charly
lived in the bathroom. Her pet parent felt
Charly is a beautiful tortoise shell kitty looking
for a forever home.
that Charly would be more comfortable
in a home without other pets or young
children so she could be a more integrated
member of the family.
Charly was adopted and returned again in
October 2004 because her pet parent wanted
a cat she could pick up and who would enjoy
being pet at all times. Unfortunately, Charly
was not the right cat for her.
Charly is a wonderful, beautiful kitty
who will make a great companion for the
right person. We know you’re out there! If
you’re looking for an extra-special, sophisticated
feline friend to share your life with,
Charly just may be your perfect match!
Come meet her at the Humane Society
today!
Ask a T r a i n e r
BABY BLUES
Q: We just had our first baby last month
and our beloved pooch is having trouble
adjusting. Although he is normally calm and
well behaved he has recently started reverting
to annoying puppy behaviors. We love him
dearly and want him to remain a treasured
member of the family, but he is driving us
crazy! What can we do?
Anonymous
A: Congratulations on your new baby!
The addition of a new baby to the family
while a joyous occasion can be very stressful
on pets, especially dogs who thrive on
routine. When a new baby arrives, a dog’s
normally very predictable routine is turned
upside down and some find it very difficult
to cope. The behaviors you’re seeing
are essentially attention-seeking behaviors.
Your dog is trying to make sure you still
love him and that nothing has changed
– in his world, at least!
Here are a few helpful tips for helping
your dog and baby live in harmony:
• Management is key to fostering a safe
and happy environment for your dog and
baby. One of the easiest ways to manage
your dog is to make sure he has enough
AnimalFare • Summer 2005
physical and mental exercise. Tired dogs are
generally good dogs! For busy new parents
who might be finding they have less time
to take their dog for a walk, it may help to
ask friends and family members for a hand
or to look into having a dog walker come
to the home. Even easier, see if your dog
enjoys playing with another dog in your
neighborhood and coordinate play dates.
• Keep your dog busy while you’re not
around or when you need him to be calm.
Look for interactive, food carrier toys, such
as KONG toys or Buster Cubes, which can
help keep your dog busy for hours. Since
some dogs take a little practice in getting
these toys to work, you should make
sure it’s relatively easy for your dog to get
the food the first few times so he gets an
immediate reward.
• If you’ve been using reprimands or
corrections to try to control your dog or
change his behavior, please stop immediately.
Dogs often get into cycles where they
can’t stop themselves from doing the annoying
behaviors because they get so anxious
from the corrections. Things like barking
and house soiling are typical examples. For
example, if your dog is barking constantly
to get your attention, quietly turn your
Investigations to the Rescue
In January, Humane Society officers
investigated a report of neglect.
Apparently a neighbor had allowed
his two dogs, Sassy and Lucy (pictured
left), to roam the neighborhood
for years. Neighbors had fed
the dogs, even helped find homes
for their puppies, all while hoping
the owner would change his ways.
During the Winter rainstorms, the dogs were living in some brush
with another litter of puppies when the neighbors decided it was time for
help.
Officers found the dogs living inside an abandoned coyote den. Dirty
but relatively healthy, the puppies and their mothers were brought to the
Society for medical care and TLC.
Lucy, Sassy and their puppies have already been adopted into new
homes where we’re sure they’ll be treasured members of the family!
back on your dog or
leave the room
instead of correcting
or reprimanding.
I know this can
be a very stressful
time for everyone,
but keep in mind that things do get better.
You may benefit from a private behavior
consultation or training session if you
believe that there are issues with your dog’s
behavior that might put your baby’s safety
at risk, or if you feel that the behavior
issues are becoming too much. An evaluation
from a professional trainer can help
put things in perspective and prioritize
what’s going to help you most in managing
the current situation. Call our free
Behavior Helpline at (619) 299-7012,
extension 2244, for more information.
Best of luck with your dog and congratulations
If you’re submitting a digital photo,
please be sure to set your camera to
its highest resolution setting. This will
ensure that you have captured an image
using the maximum resolution capabilities
of your camera. Because different
types of digital cameras create and store
images uniquely, there is no standard
acceptable file size, but in general,
the larger the file size, the better the
resolution of the image. Each image’s
quality will be judged on a case-bycase
basis. Hint: well-focused (sharp) pictures
enlarge better, so they have a better
chance of being chosen! Winners will be
notified by phone and mail, and the calendar
will be available in October 2005.
If your digital photo is selected as
a finalist, please keep in mind we will
need an electronic version of the photo.
Acceptable image formats include JPEG
(or JPG) or TIFF.
All photos that meet these requirements
will be included in the 2006 Calendar.
San Diego Humane Society staff will
judge all entries, with the top 13 photos
featured as “Pets of the Month” and
runners-up included in smaller photos
within the calendar portion of each
month’s page. All other photos will be
included in the calendar as part of the
“Best Friends Collage.”
Thank you very much for your continued
support of the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA. We are proud to
include you among our friends.
A Birthday Shared With the Animals
A past participant in the Society’s Summer camp, Thomas Allingham was touched
by the Society’s work. So when it came time to plan his twelfth birthday party,
Thomas chose to celebrate at the Society amongst the animals.
In lieu of gifts, he asked guests to bring donations. Thirty-five guests attended the
party, and brought a gift basket of presents for the animals as well as over $200 in
donations to aid the Society in caring for animals.
With this kind gesture, Thomas and his family and friends have impacted the lives
of countless animals. What a great way to celebrate a birthday and the joy of animal
companionship!
All of us at the Society send our sincere thanks to Thomas and his family for their
wonderful support.
Five Questions To Ask About Your Will
Periodically, it’s a good idea to run
through a little checklist to make sure your
last will and testament is ready to go. Here
are some questions to ask.
1. Is my will up-to-date? This is an
important question because many people
have a will tucked away someplace, a will
that is so outdated as to be practically useless.
In fact, an out-of-date will can actually
cause more problems for your loved ones
than not having a will at all. Updating your
will allows you to take advantage of recent
tax developments and new techniques in
estate planning.
2. Does my will represent my wishes?
Your family situation may have changed
over the years so that you no longer have
dependents at home. Perhaps your estate
has grown beyond your earlier estimates.
Maybe you’ve changed your mind about
some of your bequests. The more time that
passes and the more changes that occur in
your life, the more you should consider
bringing your will “up to speed.”
please detach and mail the form below
AnimalFare • Summer 2005
3. Is my will valid? Have you moved
to a different state since creating your last
will? The laws may differ and your old will
may not be valid. Or maybe you prepared
your own will and missed something of
vital importance, like proper signatures.
Considering the importance of your last will
and testament, it makes good sense to have
a reputable estate-planning attorney review
your current will or even draft you a new
one.
4. Is my will safely stored? Where do
you keep the original copy of your will? Is it
safely tucked away in a fireproof home safe?
Or is it in a file folder someplace, or even in
an old shoebox under the bed? This is a precious
document and should be either in a
bank safety deposit box or some other place
where it is protected from fire and thievery.
5. Does my representative know? After
selecting a safe place to store your will, be
sure to tell your personal representative
where to find it. Imagine the frustration
and added grief this person may experience
by being unable to fulfill your wishes in
settling your estate. Besides informing your
representative about your will (and maybe
even giving him or her an access key or
combination), you might also provide a list
of accounts, assets and funeral instructions.
There is a sixth question you might also
consider: Have I included the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA in my estate
plans?
If and when you do update your will
– or prepare one for the first time – we
hope you will consider adding a bequest to
the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA.
There are innovative ways you can use an
estate gift to create a legacy, as well as make a
difference in the lives of the people and animals
in San Diego for generations to come.
Donate your
car, truck,
boat, plane
Help animals by donating
your vehicle to the San Diego
Humane Society and SPCA
It’s easy!
• Vehicle donations still qualify for
a tax deduction if the donor itemizes
deductions.
• The new tax regulations will take
the guesswork out of valuing your
donation.
• The process is still quick and easy.
• Our partnership with Volunteers of
America for our vehicle donation pro-
gram ensures the diligent liquidation/
sale of the vehicle and helps ensure
donors continue to get the best pos-
sible value for their donation.
• It may be safer and easier to donate
a used vehicle than to sell it to a strang-
er who comes to your home.
• Your donation will help support
thousands of people and animals served
by the San Diego Humane Society and
SPCA each year.
