FROM THE DRIVER S SEAT With Zaahir Parker
Welcome to Urban RacR Magazine
Online - Issue 02.
Many of the faithful would remember
that Urban RacR Magazine started out as
a downloadable e-zine as far back as
2003. Five years later we find that
people still talk about how they have all
the downloaded issues saved at home.
We still meet people heaping praise on
how we were at the forefront of
downloadable magazines in South
Africa. By keeping with this tradition of
P A G E 0 4 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E
our passion for motoring and for the
industry, we will continue to make
Urban RacR Magazine synonymous with
Cape Town car culture, synonymous
with South African car culture.
By having a downloadable online
magazine it is now easier to share it
amongst your friends and family. You
can just forward it at the touch of a
button (technology certainly is amazing).
Hint hint, nudge nudge guys. Share it
with your friends. We don’t mind.
2
It makes a lot of sense by going online.
The climbing interest rate and suffering
economy have greatly reduced the
expendable income available for
multiple title purchases. For this reason
we are proud to be able to give you a
magazine for FREE. Who out there
doesn’t like free stuff? The internet has
made magazine-quality information and
photography more accessible, and
essentially free to own. We like to
believe that what sets us apart from the
rest is the quality of our content versus
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
our peers in conjunction with our web
presence. Check out our website and
you will see that Urban RacR Magazine
does more than just offer large on the fly
galleries. We also offer timeously
released feature and technical content
from the magazine's reservoir of
information as well as video clips of
events and features. With our offering of
road tests, readers are introduced to a
different type of vehicle test and report.
The cover of this month’s issue is graced
by local KOTM hopeful Malcolm and
his JDM Scooby. We feature the fastest
two wheeled riders in the Cape, Yusuf
Patel, Gymkhana King (GK) Lindsey with
his Mk1 Golf shows us his metal and we
follow a few of the car clubs to their
events and hotspots. Test driving an M3
like only a RacR could brings all the
adrenalin to the fore and shows us that
M certainly is one of the most powerful
letters in the alphabet. To style or not to
style? Check out our style guide and let’s
go through the options one by one. We
had quite a bit of feedback regarding last
month’s “Tales from the Klip” and we
hope to make this a very regular feature.
If you have any tales you would like to
share with us then please give us a
RIDING
SHOT
GUN
With Ridwaan Nordien
Being a “dare-devil” is
sometimes synonymous with
being stupid!
For this month’s letter, I thought
I’d do something a little
different. I thought I’d chat
about a recent experience of
mine “on the job”. So, if you
have any affiliation to my
medical aid company or the
company that holds my life
policy, please stop reading
now!
At a recent event at Killarney
Raceway, one of the lunchtime
shows was that of the
Monstermob Mustang piloted
by the very capable Otto
Graven. Those of you who
know me would also know I
love American Muscle V8 rear
wheel drive cars, including
bakkies (pickups), and the new
Ford Mustang is at the top of
that list.
This lunchtime drifting show
was different for me though,
because instead of me taking
snaps of the car drifting around
people, I was one of the three-
P A G E 0 6 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 2
some (Ed – oooooh, kinky!) that
it was drifting around.
The adrenalin rush, coupled to
the fact that I knew I would be
seriously injured if something
went wrong right then, was
amazing. Better than sex?
Possibly (Ed – as if you would
know anyway. LOL!). I lift my
head from behind the camera
and glance at Otto’s eyes, and
then realize … this guy is
looking at us and not at where
his car is going. Looking over to
the passenger seat I see Tyrone
Paulsen holding on for dear life
as the car swings out as Otto
changes direction.
This time round he’s even
closer to us. If I could have
plucked up the courage to
extend my arm, I’m sure I
would have been able to touch
the hood of the car. That would
have been considered even
more stupid than what Phil,
Gaynor and I were doing. With
the tyre smoke overpowering
us, Otto swung the car out
again to do some donuts further
away while the smoke cleared
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
[Watch the movie]
and then returned to our
position to continue drifting
rings around us (excuse the
pun). This was one time that I
didn’t mind a Ford driving
circles around me! Closer and
closer each time, this man
certainly has the art.
He’s done, and as he swings out
for the last time I remember to
breathe. Walking back to the
drags’ starting line, I lean
forward to glance at my crotch
… I feel my rear end… I’m still
dry! What an adrenalin rush.
And if my medical aid should
question me about this incident
… IT WASN’T ME!

The uphill
specialist
Written by Marlboro
Photography by Zaahir Parker
Malcolm Royston's heavily tweaked MY99 Subaru WRX STi may share the great rally legend of
its forefathers such as those driven by the likes of Mr McCrae, Solberg and the rest of them, but
this particular steely rex makes no bones about its true intention.
Malcolm's foregone the mud and clay soiled overalls and
gravel pits in favour of tarmac terrorism, most notably at King
of the Mountain where the car proved itself as a top performer,
arguably the best of the bunch on the Saturday, losing out the
next day only to some severely tuned exotica. Besides, this is
Cape Town and stone chips are kak for the paint job bru.

* everything under the bonnet has a job to do
It's fast. Really fuggen scary fast. I've
signed up for a shotgun ride
alongside the wheelman himself,
and in retrospect he was never
going to disappoint. Each throw of
the wheel is a flourish, each dip and
blip of the throttle, like every other
driver input, is precise, measured
and just what the rex ordered to
keep the chassis rolling down our
favourite strip at phenomenal
velocity ... my breath is literally
taken away. Perhaps a contributing
factor are those narrow tree-lined
verges banking the twisty road,
forcing me to contemplate the
likelihood of an underpants change,
and soon.
Malcolm is a business man, an
entrepreneur. Successful too, thanks
to his dedication and high levels of
concentration. This translates into
the way he pedals, and into the way
he builds his cars. This is the second
STi he has tuned for the mountain.
Previously a blob eyed MY03 had
his attention. It now sits at home in
standard trim once more. There's a
lot of car here, if Malcolm's grocery
list is anything to go by. It certainly
turns the Subaru into a far cry from
his first car, which was an old
school classic Mini. None of that
nonsense here. Instead you've got a
2.2litre (stroked) boxer motor,
uprated from the standard spec
available on domestic models. This
car, you see, is an import. One of
11 Version 6 JDM STIs officially
brought in. It's certainly not an
Australian build like the ones on our
roads by default. There are only 11
in the country currently, with
Malcolm's easily the most modified.
"I wanted this model as it would
allow me to be really competitive
on the mountain this year" he will
be, with his prowess behind the
wheel and the Version 6's
lightweight, agile chassis as his
weapon, he is sure to break some
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
* what more could you need?
records, if only his personal best.
Also in the mix are a set of
Cosworth conrods and pistons,
Cosworth crankshaft and even a
Cosworth high pressure oil pump
taking the high revving motor to
new heights. A Walbro 255L
fuelling system works in
conjunction with an HKS fuel
pressure regulator to keep the beast
well fed – with brain power
handled by a Link G3 management
system. Injectors are by Power
Enterprizes and do the delivery via
750cc units. Boost is derived at
1.35bar via the STI VF43
turbocharger, jacked from a Version
9 STI for its added power rating.
This pushes wheel power to a
modest, but ultimately extremely
useable, 200kW and 320Nm – not
enough to win a dyno day, but

’
. .. the c aris
a stunner ...
’
combined with all the right stuff ensures
this baby crosses the quarter at
13.26seconds. Now, get that kind of
figures down on a mountain road – and
you've got a handful.
It all works – everything under the bonnet
has a job to do, from the carbon fibre air
box housing its BMC filter, to the pressure
rated Blitz 1.3 cooler and oil caps. Paul
Riley of KZN tuning firm, Sportronic
Racing, was the man behind the build,
and if the car's newly enhanced
tractability is anything to go by, then it's a
job well done. Also aiding the car's
impressive forward mobility turn for turn
are those Bridgestone RE55 rubber,
P A G E 1 8 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E
keeping Malcolm glued to the tarmac.
Combined with the lowered suspension
achieved by the trick race-spec coilover
unit from YXZ, this car handles like it has
a magnet beneath it. Stopping power is
courtesy of Powerbrake slotted discs and
Hawk racing pads via some meaty BF
Goodrich braided braking lines and a
custom bracket housing the brake booster.
Malcolm sees himself fitting an AP Racing
6 pot brake system in the near future.
Visually the car is a stunner in its original
Japanese factory Gun Metal paint job – in
fact all the swoops, vents and details are
part of the original car. The only
aftermarket accessories are the light as
As you see him hurtling down the drag strip you
think to yourself ... Is it a bird? ... Is it a plane?
NO! It’s Yusuf Patel!
Cape Town’s very own
Superman, Yusuf Patel, is a 21
year young student from Cape
Town who likes ... dare I say it
... fast things. I'm not too sure
if he likes fast women, but I
do know what his current love
is. And boy is she sexy. She's
fast, and she's sexy. Those
beautiful curves of her body,
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
Balls Balls of ofs s teel teel
s
her stance, her smooth skin,
her tight behind, as he
straddles her, planting himself
firmly in position, as he lays
down on her belly, he leans
backwards slightly and reaches
down with his left hand ... and
with a slight pinch and a twist
to get her juices flowing he
then moves his right hand to
firmly grab hold of her, and
pulls, wiggling his hips to get
her moving side to side,
making her scream. Again.
Again. Again. The smell of
rubber permeates the air.
Come on now people. Take
your minds out of the gutter.
I'm talking about Yusuf and his
silvery silver Suzuki
GSXR1000 staging to run the
quartermile as fast as he
possible can. He tears up the
drag strip at speeds which
would require balls of steel.
Biking and drags (no not drag

queening) is in Yusuf's blood.
His dad, Salim is a drag racing
veteran at Killarney and the
two of them have been racing
for a few years already. Yusuf
currently holds THE fastest
time at Killarney for a
Capetonian on two wheels
with a blistering time of 9.15
seconds over the quarter mile.
Now that is stupid fast.
Yusuf started biking from an
early age and his first bike was
a 50cc scooter capable of a
flying 21.5 second quartermile
(LOL!).
This guy lives, eats, sleeps and
breathes motorbikes. It's a
wonder he has time for
anything else. The only car he
actually likes is an E30 M3 -
good luck with that dream bru!
It's a good dream though and
be sure to give me a holler
once you actually get it. I am
soooo riding shotgun.
The first time I came across the
Patels was when I was drawn
across to their previous bike,
which was a gassed Hayabusa.
The sight of this huge monster
of a bike being ridden by,
what I considered at the time,
a laaitie, is enough to draw
anybody's attention. After
seeing him put that 'Busa
through its paces gave me
instant respect for Yusuf. My
respect grew tenfold when I
later heard that he was
involved in a terrible accident
with the bike in that it had
combusted during testing,
engulfing the bike and rider in
P A G E 2 2 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E
* you also have to consider that the nose is going to lift
flames. Yusuf's scars bear
testament to the reality of
accidents and the dangers of
racing. But the fact that he got
back in the saddle shortly
afterwards to break some
records bears testimony to the
man's determination to
overcome all obstacles and
fears on route to becoming the
fastest guy in Cape Town.
Yusuf is now able to break
records and retain titles thanks
to his GSXR1000 Suzuki which
was acquired two years ago
after the accident, combined HOT BOX
with his biking skill. A skill
which was developed under
the guidance and support of
his biggest fan, his dad, Salim
Patel. Yusuf quips: “He is also
probably the only person out
there who can beat me. He is
my mentor”. Lotsa respect! The
Patels immediately started
modifying the bike for drags.
Once a racer, always a racer.
Yusuf prefers function over
form, so the only cosmetic
changes done to the bike are a
few decals here and there. He
jokes that his Wolf stickers
make good co-pilots. The bike
Alspeed Racing Technology
(ART). Without gas the bike is
capable of 155hp, and with
gas ... enough to make the
earth spin backwards (Ed -
didn't we see that kinda thing
in a Superman movie?). His
best times and speeds to date
are 9.15 seconds over the
quartermile and a speed of
288km/h over 800m with the
wrong gearing no less. The
bike should see 300+ km/h
with the correct gearing.
Many of us will know how
difficult it is to launch a car at
Killarney. Can you imagine the
level of difficulty on a bike?
You not only have to consider
wheel spin, but you also have
to consider that the nose is
going to lift. For this reason,
ART has supplied weights to
assist him in keeping the front
wheel down. To aid traction
* what’s next?
and balance, Yusuf has opted
to fit a custom swingarm
which is 6 inches longer than
standard as well as lowering
links, both done by NAZ
Racing, who also do most of
the mechanical work on this
two wheeled bullet. The stock
suspension has been rebuilt to
competition spec and the
suspension height has been
dropped "down low, keeping it
gangsta". Tyres of choice?
gymkhana King’
This little Mk1 Golf is a tidy package that turns heads. It seems
that dynamite really does come in small packages

Thinking back to 2004, I remember
seeing a black, new spec Citi-Golf, a
Citi.com to be precise, driving in and
around Cape Town. This Golf caught my
eye for many reasons.
From its custom sprayed black Velociti
wheel to its lower-looking front bumper
(due to the fitment of a Mk2 16v spoiler),
but mostly because of the helluva erratic
idle from the 288 degree cam. Why the
hell won't our warranty plans allow us to
do a simple thing like a camshaft
upgrade?
As the months went by, I noticed minor
changes on the car, such as the Team
* ... THE HELLUVA ERRATIC IDLE FROM THE 288 DEGREE CAM
Dragon Decals (which have since been
replaced by sponsor decals), as well as
the fitment of an aluminium roofmounted
wing and a lowering kit. At one
stage I also noticed a Zender-look threepiece
roof spoiler on the car.
As time went by I finally met the owner,
and saw where he was going with all his
upgrades. Lindsey Carlse was a
Gymkhana King (aspirant at the time) and
all the upgrades were to increase his
success rate at the gymkhanas. By now
the car had evolved into a something of a
gymkhana legend. A cone filter now
protrudes from its grille, and the kind
folks from GA Promotions supplied the
Autogauge rev counter with shift light
which now sits on the dashboard. The
rear seats have been replaced by a bright
red roll-cage and two OMP custom rally
seats have been fitted in the front.
As a member of the Gti Club, Lindsey
would enter almost every gymkhana
event in the Western Cape from Cape
Town to Worcester to Mykonos. He has
claimed a few GTI Club victories,
finishing third at a Mykonos Gymkhana
and second overall for 2007, it's clear
that he's a talented driver. He is very
much a throw-it-into-a-corner, dodge-thisbeacon,
pull-up-the-handbrake, make-a-uturn,
then plant the accelerator down

toward the next obstacle kinda guy (Sjoe!
What a mouthful.) Lindsey isn't really
interested in straight-line drag-racing, but
his best quartermile time to date is 15.9
seconds.
Lindsey has taken great care in choosing
the right modifications for his car to
correctly set it up for gymkhana. As a
matter of fact, he started modifying his
car only three months after taking
delivery of it. His choice of modifications
include a 2.0l ported and polished 8valve
motor, built by Ian Herbst with the
help of Marius at RSM. Jesse at Windsor
Garage dynotuned the car for him.
Fuelling is controlled courtesy of a
Dastec piggyback system running in
conjunction with the MP9 system. As
with many Golf drivers, Lindsey has
opted for a Powerflow exhaust system.
With all these goodies and gadgets, the
car produces a healthy 132kw and
236nm of torque.
That is certainly not shabby coming from
the 8 valve powerplant. Truth be told,
the car is running aftermarket conrods
and bigger pistons, but everything else is
pretty much standard, even the gearbox.
The only thing standing in his way of first
place is probably the much needed
limited slip diff.
As with any gymkhana car, suspension
and peripherals setup is of utmost
importance. The racing suspension was
custom built and fitted by Ian Glass with
all the bushings and mountings being
sourced from Andre's Rubber Supplies.
The roll cage, along with the Reynolds'
custom built sway bars and strut braces,
keep the TSW Apex wheels firmly
planted to the tar. It also helps that he
uses Bridgestone RE5405 tyres,
195/50/15 up front and generous
205/55/15s at the rear. VR6 discs mated
to Ferodo DS pads with a Spitzer braking
suspension package. It’s amazing how
important your brake setup is when it
comes to gymkhanas.
Watching him weave his way through a
as a thriller on television, or the last five
minutes of a whodunit movie.
You gotta respect his values too, because
as the responsible adult that he is, he
keeps his misbehaving for the track or
gymkhana pitch. In fact, Lindsey hates
reckless drivers. I hope he is not referring
on the scene
gone racing
Written and Photography by Ridwaan Nordien
KILLARNEY RACEWAY’S UPGRADES: Winston Churchill said, “There is nothing
wrong with change, if it is in the right direction.” The Western Province Motor Club (WPMC)
understand that rejecting change is the architect of decay, and it is for this reason that there have
been constant upgrades at the premises, both with regard to how events are run, as well as
features for the benefit of competitors, spectators as well a sponsors.
Streetracing at Killarney
depicts street legal vehicles
competing against one
another in timed quarter
mile drags, as well as battling
it out on a carefully
calculated course, known as
gymkhana.
In existence since 2003, these
events were designed to
accommodate racers with
street legal vehicles running
on street legal tyres in safer
controlled environments than
to rather race illegally on the
streets of Cape Town.
Competitors also have their
times officially recorded to
see who of them are the
fastest in their respective
classes. The classes at
Killarney can accommodate
almost any vehicle from an
1100cc Uno to your 7-litre
V8 or even your uncle’s SL65
V12 Bi-turbo Mercedes Benz,
if he’ll lend it to you that is.
Brian Smith is now the head
honcho at Killarney seeing
that the previous club
chairman stepped down to
make way for new blood.
And as the saying goes “a
new broom sweeps clean”
and Killarney has undergone
some major changes. The
most positive of which, for
street racing in general, was
the purchase of Wesbank
Raceway’s drag timing system
in 2007. The new system
incorporates an American
Porta Tree timing system
which includes an 8th mile
time and speed, a quarter
mile time and speed, as well
as three other splits which
can be strategically placed,
included a 60 foot time in
each lane. This system works
hand in hand with the four
new display boards, 4 feet
high by 6 feet wide.
However, being such an
intricate system and requiring
around 2kms of cabling, it
will be a mammoth task to set
it up.
The moment the new system
is to be installed, the older,
yet still effective system, has
to be removed. This change
over has to be done as
efficiently and in as short a
time span as possible to not
P A G E 3 2 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 2
affect the normal racing and
streetracing schedules of
Killarney. This will require
meticulous preparation with
accurate measuring and the
placing of the timing beacons
at strategic points, so as to
conform to MSA standards. In
addition, the system cannot
be left in its position, and will
need to be removed after
every street racing event.
Further upgrades at Killarney,
with street racing in mind,
was the newly built pit
facility across the main
straight from the current
facility. These new pits are
not yet complete and will
require over R3 million to
complete. It will house
seating above to cater for
spectators on a Streetracing
day, as well as any other
regional or international
events, a cafeteria which will
be comfortable for the family
and kids while we, the men
or women in their lives,
prove to them that their
support is not wasted. The
garages of this new facility
will allow Killarney as well as
outsiders to host car shows of
international standards,
including Night Cruises.
Further upgrades on their way
are bigger toilet facilities as
well as a new bridge which
will conform to safer standards
of the very much missed
Goodyear Bridge.
One has to remember that
Killarney is a multi facility
track and was never essentially
built as, nor do they profess to
be, a drag strip. They are just
trying their utmost to
accommodate Streetracing
events. This is clear by the fact
that there were 19 Streetracing
events in last year and there
were night drags every week
in November and December.
Another general issue against
not only Streetracing, but
motorsport in general at
Killarney is noise pollution. All
over the world noise pollution
is a problem. So much so, that
even airports have been closed
down. This is the major
contributing factor as to the
reasons why the cut-off time
for night drags is 10:30pm.
Killarney is trying to contain
the noise by building huge
embankments on the outskirts
of the premises along the oval
side of the track. Until this has
been sorted out, burnouts on a
Sunday afternoon are
cancelled.
In an attempt to improve
Streetracing at Killarney there
are new racing procedures to
maintain the safety of
competitors as well as
spectators. As cars are getting
faster safety is becoming a
problem, and to conform to
MSA standards certain changes
have been made such as the
new safety net poles and catch
nets, as well as barriers for the
pit lane entry and
scrutineering entry. The folk at
Killarney would also like to
instate a Streetracing and
Gymkhana championship later
in the year.
WPMC has created a
temporary membership,
whereby which competitors
can join WPMC so as to be a
member of an MSA affiliated
club, which helps facilitate the
acquisition of an MSA licence.
This temporary membership,
however, excludes you from
the perks enjoyed by full time
members. If you would like to
become a full time member,
contact the crew at Killarney.
For more information on how
to join Streetracing at
Killarney, we urge you to visit
the website,
www.killarney.co.za, click on
Streetracing, and read the rules
and regulations. There are
three forms to be completed.
Apart from being a member of
an MSA affiliated club, you
need to pay R150 for your
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
licence as well as optional, but
highly recommended, R250
medical cover. Once you have
received your annual MSA
licence, your first nonblockbuster
event race entry is
FREE.
Killarney also hosts “Open
Streetcar Track Days” where
you can come with your
every-day car and feel what it
is to do circuit racing. You can
learn when and how to brake
before negotiating the
multitude of bends Killarney’s
circuit has to offer. This is
certainly a better option than
driving like that on our public
roads. The open days happen
once a month and are not
competitions, thus no MSA
licence is required. All you
require is a safe car (which
will be scrutineered), long
sleeved top, long pants, a
helmet and R250.
We at Urban RacR Magazine
congratulate what the
management of Killarney has
achieved so far and support
them fully in their endeavours
to improve motor-racing in
Cape Town.

M-Power
dyno runs
Written by Ridwaan Nordien Photography by Zaahir Parker
Exclusively M Club Dyno Day? All that power under one roof ... what
could possible be more satisfying?
As the cover of Urban
RacR Magazine Online
Issue 1 (available off our
website) so modestly states,
the Exclusively M Club
inaugural breakfast run
boasted 12,000+ kws of
power. It is not surprising
then that their recent Dyno
Day at Zee Max in Paarden
Eiland, open to all makes
of cars, saw a total of 40
vehicles pushing out a
combined sum of
8,651kws of power, and an
astonishing 14,687nm of
* spectators, contestants and club members alike
torque. For the maths
fundis, that's an average of
214kws and 367nm of
torque … PER CAR. Now, I
ask you with tears in my
eyes, “Where the fuggen
hell is my little 1800 golf
going to push out that kind
of figures?”
Zee Max Auto is a family
run business established
two years ago by Zaid
Coenraad and assisted by
his family. They specialise
in maintaining and
P A G E 3 4 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 1 2
modifying BMW's and
Mini's, so it would only be
natural that the Exclusively
M club hold their first
Dyno Day at Zee Max.
The highest power reading
of the day went to Shaheen
aka “Suspect” with his
supercharged Lumina
boosting an amazing
412kws without gas at a
detuned .35 bar boost.
Now that is absolutely
insane! The Lumina was
followed by the Modack
Corolla which struggled with
traction on the day and even
with a total of four people
trying to keep the car down,
still spun it's way to 370kws.
A few other cars also struggled
with traction. Maybe one of
our knowledgeable readers
out there have a solution to
their problems. The standard
*cough* M6 followed the
Toyota with 356kws, and the
no cylinders, no pistons, just
twin-rotored and boosted,
previously featured and just
returned from Johannesburg,
Mazda RX7 aka Spitze flamed
in with 344kws.
Exclusively M Club warned us
that they were going to be
putting together quite a few
fun events for the general
public and they are certainly
pulling out all the stops. Once
again they, along with Zee
Max, have out-done
themselves. Sorry Mo, but
Sunday lunch was calling so I
couldn't have that boerewors
sausage roll that everyone was
talking about.
Banner year for
Puerto Rican rotary
drag racing
The last barrier on the drag strip for a Mazda 13B Rotary engine has
fallen, courtesy of Puerto Rico and its band of diehard racers.
The nature of drag racing is that there is
always room for improvement. With the
escalating costs of fielding a competitive
car, petrol prices at more than R10 a litre
and the rising cost of living, motor sport is
feeling the pinch. The influx and exodus of
corporate money and their “Johnny come
lately” racers has run its course and the
scene now consists of the diehards and
pioneers of the sport.
Serious rotary-powered drag racing finds its
roots in Puerto Rico and it is outlaw racing
at its very best. Puerto Ricans understand
that a drag race is about an automotive
speed contest and nothing else. Hundreds
of thousands of dollars are spent to
campaign and field a competitive race car.
Puerto Ricans are not interested in going to
a drag strip to attend rap concerts, break
dancing contests and watching women
strip while their wives and children are
trackside. They are concerned about going
faster than anyone else …
It is thus no wonder that a Puerto Rican
1308cc, turbocharged, methanol burning
13B rotary has done what was previously
considered impossible - a 6,97 second pass
at 197 mph (315 km/h). Eddie Colon Jr will
go down in history as the man who had
the vision and put together the men and
equipment that turned the sub-seven
second dream into reality. This feat didn’t
come easy. As true fans of drag racing
know, countless hours and huge amounts
of money translate into a few seconds of
perfection on the race track. The world’s
rotary community congratulates Colon
Motorsports and the people behind the
scenes for a truly epoch-making
achievement!
Looking back at 2007 and the first half of
2008, we have seen the most significant
leap pertaining to rotary performance, in
history. The 6,97 of Eddie Colon Jr in his
Sport Dynojet Mazda RX-7 will be the first
in a string of six-second time slips for the
13B. Now the race is on for the first
200mph (320 km/h) time slip! Of course
the odds on favourites will have to be the
Sporty and the Pica RX-7’s. The future is
now and because of the technological
2
proliferation and the ever expanding talent
of tuners and mechanics, the day is coming
soon when 6-second time slips will be a
common occurrence. On any race day any
one of two dozen cars has a realistic
chance of setting a performance milestone.
The next generation of cars being built
now, are better equipped and have more
potential than many of the top rides which
are currently being campaigned. It is not a
fantasy to envision a 6,50 time slip from
the 13B. With improved induction
methods, billet aluminium rotors and
microprocessor-controlled waste gates, who
is to say that it is impossible? The rotary
engine is now stronger than ever!
The boost in performance levels over the
past few months has been nothing short of
stunning. With back to back new personal
bests by the Rafaelito tuned RX-8 (7,02
seconds) and driven by Oso Juarbe and the
Nayeli Racing Toyota Starlet shoed and
programmed by Siguel Torres, it is clear
that 2008 will be another bumper year in
the cutting edge of rotary performance. The
Mech Tech sponsored RX-8 of the
legendary Raphael Rivera is a click away
from breaking into the six-second zone.
The Tim McAmis built, full tube Mazda
from the fine performance, it would for
certain have been a six-second run with a
lighter driver like Ralph “Little” Rivera in
the seat.
The hard-running Nayeli Racing Toyota
Starlet (7,09 seconds) is the fastest and
quickest three-quarter rotary chassis in the
world. The Siguel Torres cars are always a
threat to break records anytime, anywhere.
The Pica Motors Import RX-7 is also right
back in the hunt after a stay at Chivy King
Race Cars. Opinion in the grandstands is
that the previous record holder, (7,13
seconds) is the odds on favourite to break
next into the six-second bracket. The rear
suspension improvements resulted in a
harder initial hit on the Goodyears on the
starting line and have shown their worth in
a new best 60 foot time of 1,09 seconds.
The bump spot in the top 10 fastest times is
already at 7,27 seconds and everyone is
looking to knock Eddie Colon’s Sporty
Dynojet RX-7 off the top of the ladder. It is
not hard to imagine that in a few years you
will be going home early if you have not
received a 6-second time slip!

track special: killarney
We go
*Drag
Drivers had to keep their composure as they struggled for traction after
some heavy rains the previous few days had left the track slightly more
damp than they had hoped.
Written by Waanie Photography by Waanie & Rushdi
The track soon dried up enough to enable
drivers and riders alike to get some
awesome launches.
As each drag event progresses and passes,
drivers strive to prove that their four
wheeled machinery can be just as fast as
the two wheeled rockets by moving closer
and closer to the magical 10 second mark
P A G E 4 2 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E
and maintain it. All this while the bikers
are itching to break into that seemingly
difficult 8 second bracket.
On a sad note, one of the quickest bikes
Cape Town has to offer, being the low 9second
Suzuki GSXR1000 usually ridden
by Yusuf Patel and featured in this
magazine, was involved in an accident.
2
Yusuf's father, Salim, lost control of the
bike under braking after his run with his
front wheel locking up and sliding out
from under him. The bike slid along the
tar, hit the sand at turn one's run-off,
flipped three metres into the air, hit a
pole and landed into the tyre barrier.
Needless to say, the bike sustained
major damage, but luckily Salim was
well clear of the bike and only suffered
the usual road burns. We like to see
people walk away from things like this.
The only question we have at Urban
RacR is … what do the Patel family pull
out now? Which bike? Gas? Turbo?
What? C'mon guys … the suspense is
killing us.
GETAWAY IN CAPE TOWN
Road Test: 2008 E90 M3
Welcome to the second Urban RacR road
test and as you can well imagine we do
things a little bit differently here. We
don't use race tracks. We don't use FIA or
MSA approved apparatus to record our
figures nor do we count cup holders and
boot space. Tonight the open road is our
dynamometer and our benchmark is the
cop cars in our wake.
I've already pre-selected M mode via the
button on the steering wheel. Settings are
dialled in from the I-Drive, I have it set to
the wildest combination of presets to
ensure a ride on the wild side in true M
fashion. Forget Dakar Yellow. Or Phoenix
Gold for that matter. No, the colour to
have on your new M3 has to be Ice White.
Two door or four, the choice is yours, but
make mine either an e90 or e92 with its
new found V8 vocal chords and the roads
are my playground. For that matter forget
P A G E 4 6 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 2
the Vtec, the VR6, the Superboss or the
latest spate of turbo boosted hatch backs
from Ford, Renault or the rest of the boys.
The benchmark king of the streets is back,
and I've got the keys.
With a foot flattened into the wheel well
and a jab at the start button the mighty V8's
fires are lit and we're released from the
driveway and with a normally aspirated
howl and tyre shriek we're away. Time of
departure, 11pm.
Impressions:
PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY IN
GRASMERE STREET, I QUICKLY RE-
ACTIVATE M DYNAMIC MODE. This gave
me the full compliment of 307kW and a
loosened up rear axle minus traction
control, which meant burnouts were
standard on pull away, and every corner
became a drift, theoretically. Well, good
news, the theory Is proven. We launched.
Tyre smoke… 2nd gear grabbed, tyres
squeal, arse shimmies left and right and I
grab third the revs climb in motorcycle
fashion, this V8 is tinny, robust, and
violently I'm catapulted to 150kph and it's
time to plant anchors before taking a right
turn, pause, shimmy left at the robots and
I'm at the police intersection of Jan Smuts
and Klipfontein. “Go Green go green go
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
’
catupulted
to 150kph ’

’
ablur on
the rig ht...
’
green” I recite this mantra with my clutch
depressed, rolling precariously towards the
clear intersection… red turns green, before
I have time to process I clutch kick her into
a brutal acceleration and turn her in, the
arse steps out and I'm at the perfect angle
to flatten the throttle. The sound deserves
its own paragraph, I can't believe how
good the V8 sounds, primal, animal…
mean, exquisite. I'm on Klipfontein and the
only other sound is coming from my
delighted (read: terrified) passengers'
giggling, “its nice… I'm gonna scare the
hell out of them,“ I think to myself. So I
continue, we're barrelling past Thornton,
obviously en route Wembley. The roads
are a race track tonight and my feet are
relentlessly working the pedals to keep the
car as loud, quick and sideways as I can
before blitzing down Belgravia, parading in
and around Wembley, before continuing
my arc around Athlone. Hewat College,
(overhead jump) Zaki's barber shop, Jan
Smuts (hard right!) arse is out by 30
degrees, MDM catches it and fixes it for me
and I'm still climbing the revs. My mom's
house is a blur on the right the V8 drone is
filling our ears and the cabin on this beast
and the next left-hander looms. An Audi
darts in front of us, we brake hard, the rear
tries to swap ends with the front but a
quick correction on the throttle sees the
front end tuck in and round the A4 – the
rears light up and the understeer that neverwas
turns into a controllable oversteer and
we're through the bend and left again
P A G E 4 8 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 2
turning the intersection into a double left
hander which the Bimmer takes all in it's
beautiful stride. A quick blat on the throttle
sees me back down Grasmere, out again,
left at Kromboom left into the road where
the journey began. The end. We pull in
once more… the revs drop, and grown men
begin cackling and giggling like school
girls.
Summary: Clearly, a very large group of
very sensible Germans have thrown a great
wad of cash and bags of refinement at this
legendary beast. Well I'm happy to report.
She's not been tamed yet
There are hundreds of reasons why a
Sometimes it's ignorance (Vee dub parts
bad luck. Perhaps they copied something
they saw in an inferior magazine and got it
horribly wrong? Regardless, it's something
the most clueless newbie can ace if they
do not heed our first, only and most
"Know thy car, exploit its heritage" as
Confessions of a ricer
Once a ricer, always a ricer.. I hope this
is not the official credo for my own sake.
And the sake of my future cars, but these
are the tales of my own personal demise
and indeed reawakening as a petrol head,
just trying to enjoy his car whilst taking
many a wrong turn in the process.
Have I survived unscathed? Hell no! Are
there lessons to be learned here? I hope so
for the sake of car loving humanity. After a
long line of cars that were almost mine
(dad's car, bro's car, uncle's car, girlfriend's
car which naturally became wife's car and
it perpetuates – you know what its like). I
eventually bought my first ALL MINE Astra
200IE. It was a circa 1996 model so it had
the best engine of the lot. I traded my
Hyundai Accent CS (with custom manifold
- God help me) in for it and that was it. I
had bought cheap performance without
realising how strong the cx20e was. 107kw
at the wheels means she came second at
the first dyno day she attended. Then came
the stainless exhaust, manifold branches
and fuel pressure regulator. Sadly my little
ricer heart wept upon the realisation that
the cone filter wouldn't fit easily and the
half a horse power I stood to possibly gain
wasn't worth the effort. So I focused
elsewhere by replacing the knackered grille
with an after market one plus a groovy set
of wolf race imported alloys. Second
hand... I'm from the Cape Flats yo! The car
looked tit in her factory-white exhibiting
just the right mix of Euro and oem flavour.
She was styling now and I was loving life.
H&R lowering springs brung her closer to
the ground for a sportier disposition and
that made her a real head-turner without
being overdone (yet). A few track runs and
the occasional informals on the highways
proved her pedigree and I set about
enjoying her.
Needless to say I got more and more
involved in the local tuner fraternity and
with a bigger scene came a bigger demand.
After scouring so much of internets I found
a few options that, when mixed in with my
own depraved needs all pointed to one
thing. A two tone spray job. Black and
silver, the beast was born and similarly
dubbed. I now had a marmite (hate it or
love it) car that appealed to most but
seldom the purist. I must admit that this is
when I loved her most with just the
slightest of body tweaks added to the
bumper to make her unique. Yes, the rice
bug had bitten and the spiral downward
had barely begun. The garish boot spoiler
was the final straw. I knew I'd lost it.
Angered the 'Gods of Tuner'.. Invited
karma to ream me for my bad taste. And
then she swiftly did. Because then came
misfortune.
The car had developed a bit of a light
smoking condition. Just a puff in the
mornings, a bit more in cold weather. We
suspected the rings would need replacing
so i took it to a good friend and a bit of a
local legend tuning BMW's. He had sold
his workshop a week before however but
to cut a long story short tragedy struck.
They diagnosed a melted piston, which
was odd because I was still playing happily
with Vtecs and tuned Golfs. I gave over a
bunch of dollars and she was replaced.
Cap screws were not tightened (there or
thereabouts was the excuses) and 1200km
later I took her over 6000rpm, still a grand
short of the red line when she promptly
kakked her piston onto Morgenster Road.
Conflict. Unresolved. In the past. I move
on. Then came the stolen camshaft at said
factory that necessitated the urgent move of
my disembowelled car to someone more
reputable – needless to say this was not
easy and by the time I found someone, half
the remaining bits of 16 valve glory had
been robbed and lost. Bitter, bitter...
P A G E 5 4 | U R B A N R A C R | O N L I N E I S S U E 2
* tales from theklipfontein
Guest written by Kinnux
BITTER times. Until 6 months later when it
came to be that I had acquired an 1800 8V
lump from a Monza. By now, I had come
to miss my leather seats and air con and
power steering, the list goes on and my
ricer spirit soared in anticipation of what I
now refer to as the anticipation of "the
moment of fettling". I would do a heart
transplant on her to get the chassis rolling
once more! So like any drug addict I
quickly lost the plot and gave in... to the
internet!
I reasoned with myself. I was getting old. I
didn't need performance. I needed to
cruise. In something more.. oh I don't
know… “Florida!”. Something with an
ivory top and a searing orange body colour
that would make the Focus ST look like a
wallflower. The money was gathered and
hopes were high. But my panel beater was
nursing a drug addiction of his own and I
reckon I must have unknowingly financed
a large install of his brand of choice. Some
said it was tik. Many agreed but added
heroin, crack, and the rest of the elements
on the periodic table. I can only imagine
that the spray process involved a long
baking process (comparable to his own) as
it took 4 months to track him and my car
down. The thought that entered my mind
when I eventually saw it was "similar to
pic, not final product" it was a shambles.
The (badly fabricated) 'bumper' barely
survived the drive home and my little ricer
heart was broken into a million pieces.
This was not mendable with all the cable
ties (tools) I had thus far accumulated
through my nightmare ordeal. But still I set
about polishing my turd until I could no
longer. I took it back and demanded a
respray! "Nothing stupid, you hear me..
w w w . u r b a n r a c r . c o . z a
Just plain black!" I spat fury in his
direction. Somehow he heard matte black,
oi... and when fixing my new R2200
bumpers (ag they were kak anyway) to the
car, decided that wood glue (not just for
sniffing then?) and outward facing pop
rivets would suffice. Ha, ricer god thou
touts irony like a golden (and ivory) carrot
inches from me. Flaccid and defeated I
sulked home knowing I'd lost the war but
ultimately was the better man for it. When
the opportunity arose months later I
flogged her. I had to. I loved her but the
love affair was over. We weren't speaking.
On two occasions in one week her bonnet
blew up and almost klapped me in the
gesig. I took it personal.
She is gone now. I have moved on. More
than that I have replaced her with a new
model. She's black too and shinier than a
polished crack pipe - I've heard. I don't
look back and any fettling I do is measured
hard and long. Thus far it's been a
beautiful relationship and if I can just learn
to restrain my pimp hand then I really do
believe that she could be the one. Don't
pity me... Don't scorn me... It's better to
have riced and lost, than never to have
riced at all...
