GOLDEN CELEBRATIONS AT THE CENTRAL GARAGE
This August will mark the 50 th anniversary of
the opening of the Central Garage in Alyth’s
St. Andrew Street. The firm was established
by two local laddies; Graham Buick, a son of
Alyth, and Jim MacFarlane, a son of Glenisla.
They both had previously worked as mechanics
at McBain's in Airlie Street in Alyth.
They enjoyed working together and decided
to take the brave leap to start up on
their own only two streets away. Both newly
married, Graham and Jim found premises, a
bake house, which was being sold by Mssrs
Jas Findlay who also had Baker’s shops
throughout Alyth, including one in Toutie
Street and one at the High Street Cross.
Before opening, there was much work to be
done; pulling out the ovens and arranging the
premises for the garage to their own design.
Although this did not take them too long, they
needed to be working and making a living too,
so with a kind offer from A. Muir and Sons
(Coal Merchants), Graham and Jim got the
use of the old Jam Factory (now land with
housing at the end of Mart Street) and started
work for their first customers. These were
long hard days for them and Graham even
missed his in-law’s silver wedding celebrations
(Bob and Annie Allan).
With the bake house transformed, Buick &
MacFarlane trading as Central Garage Alyth
opened their doors on the 1 st August 1960.
They traded in similar lines as today including
car servicing, repairs, petrol sales and
in 1964 MOT Testing, but they also sold new
and used cars, were called out to repair tractors,
combine harvesters, and even Walker‘s
the Baker’s Pie Machine!
Although the work was long and hard,
many stories can still be recalled of worthwhile
trips to Glenisla especially when then
the customer was Donald Ferrier at the Glenisla
Hotel. They were well compensated!
In the early days the pair worked from 8 in
the morning until 9 at night, and every Saturday
until lunchtime, they also advertised as
being on call 24hours, 7 days a week.
When it came to employing staff they kept
things close to home and the wives Isobel
and Janey looked after the invoicing and
bookkeeping, but with growing young families
and Janey’s career as a school teacher, a full
-time clerkess was required. Helen Gall was
employed in 1966 and gave 25 years of service
ensuring every nut and bolt was accounted
for… Continued on page 2.
GOLDEN CELEBRATIONS AT THE CENTRAL cont’d.
Continued from front page… staying with the garage
until her retirement in 1991. Helen was assisted
by Isobel through these years with payroll
duties as the employee list grew.
They employed many other sons of Alyth including
Sandy Smith, Charlie Orchison, Willie Symington,
Graeme Douglas, Ally Gowans, Donald Buick,
Ron Gilmore, Davie Jump, Lindsay Kydd, Charlie
Palmer, Davie Irvine, Sandy Tosh and Mark Murray.
In 1990 Jim took early retirement after 30 years in
the partnership, and Graham was then joined as a
partner by his son David who had already worked
for the business for around 10 years.
Sadly, not long after this, Graham took a back
seat with the business after suffering a stroke in
1991. Although not at the garage every day, Graham
was on hand to step in when needed and indeed
enjoyed going down to the garage to meet old
customers, and continued MOT testing motorcycles
right up until 2004.
With all the changes around 1990, the Buick
family was looking for stability having had these 3
key people retire and when Graham’s daughter Kay
returned from studying in Edinburgh they persuaded
her, with the promise of computerisation, to take a
short placement at the garage.
Ten years later(!) she managed to secure time-off
for maternity leave, and is now Company Secretary,
and also works part-time looking after many of the
tasks once undertaken by her mother Isobel.
During these years the garage also employed
Alan Stewart of Glenshee, Andy Pate of Glenisla,
and Ian Dorward from Alyth.
These days not many businesses survive into the
third generation, so the statistics say, but after a
change of career in 2007, Scot, grandson to Graham
and son of David, embarked on his apprenticeship
at the ripe old age of 26!
Scott has now qualified from Dundee College and
looks forward to the new challenges ahead but
probably none of the old fashioned tips, which came
the way of his grandfather and Jim!
Although running a busy garage, the Buick men,
Graham, David and Scott, have all managed to be
retained firemen serving the people of Alyth, with
David only recently retiring after 25 years service,
and Scott signing up not long after that.
Not all of the faces at the Central are new and the
team today is proud to have clocked up almost 100
years between them: working alongside David’s 30
years, Graeme Douglas, one of the original employees
of Graham and Jim in 1973, has now served at
the Central for 37 years, Kay for 20 years, Donna
McNicoll, clerkess for 8 years, Scott 4 years, and
new kid on the block, having only started in June
2010, Jamie McCowan, Modern Apprentice Mechanic.
When starting out all those years ago, Alyth was a
bustling community with lots of trades doing business,
serving every need of the people of Alyth and
district. There are not so many now, but there is still
a buzz about the town and the sense of community
is still undeniably strong.
Sadly Graham Buick passed away in 2008 but
Graham’s family, along with Jim would like to thank
all of their customers from the past and present for
their trade and support over the past 50 years.
David looks forward to keeping the doors to "The
Central" open for many years to come and with a
third Buick generation now in place, the Voice looks
forward to helping them celebrate many more special
anniversaries in the future!
BEHIND THE SCENES
With only a matter of weeks to go before Alyth
Museum closes on 30th September readers
may be interested to know what was involved
in curating the Laing collection of photographic
negatives. And if you haven’t heard of
the highly acclaimed exhibition A Long Exposur
e: one Per thshir e business, thr ee gen-
1 erations of photogr apher s now showing at
Alyth Museum then where have you been all
summer? Well the job of collecting the negatives
began in 2008…
See photo:
(1) The negatives before removal
(2) Sorting the negatives in the Fair Maid’s
House, Perth, made available by Perth &
Kinross Council. Images of importance for
2 the history of Perth and Kinross were selected
and transferred to Perth Museum & Art Gallery
(3) Negatives in their original envelopes. It
was important to record all the information on
the old packaging – a long job and a dirty one
(4) The photographer’s original ledgers.
Thanks to a grant from the National Recognition
Fund administered by Museums Galleries
3 Scotland, this fantastic source of information
was computerised to allow a database of
images to be developed. The results can be
enjoyed in the touch screen picture library in
Alyth Museum which holds 800 images
(5) Michael Marshall, one of our volunteers,
assessing the condition of the negatives, repacking
them in chemically safe envelopes
and copying out reference numbers and
information. Patience, a good eye and a
steady hand were required
(6) Cellulose acetate negatives were used by
4 Laings from 1946. These can become unstable.
Signs of trouble include bubbling and
ridging of the plastic and a vinegary smell.
This is a serious worry for curators. It can
destroy the image, and worse, it can spread
through entire collections. The different
colours seen through this filter show that the
negative is cellulose acetate and, in this case,
the image is actually lifting from the base. We
have to check this collection regularly for any
5 problems. A sensitive nose is required!
(7) The negatives collected by Perth Museum
& Art Gallery were digitised by UK Archiving
Ltd in Edinburgh. This work was funded by a
grant from the National Recognition Fund
(8) The original negatives safely stored in
Perth Museum & Art Gallery today, all 15,000
of them
Once we had the negatives and their informa-
6 tion safe and sound we were able to write the
briefs for the exhibition, design and build it,
oh, and produce a brilliant DVD to introduce
it, with the help of our friends Small Majority in
Stirling and Neil Archbold in Alyth. Neil composed
tunes especially for the DVD and they
were recorded by first class local musicians.
(The video is on sale at the museum at £7.99
by the way)
7 What next you ask? Well we are dealing
with public enquiries, providing prints, supplying
DVDs to schools and care homes
throughout Perth & Kinross, sending in our
final grant claims and evaluating the whole
project. The final results of our work will be
analysed in October when we look at all of
our visitors and users comments. We are
also seeking to have some of the original
8 photographs conserved and the photographers
ledgers re-bound and we’re hoping to use the profits from the sale of the
DVDs to attract grants from Museums Galleries Scotland to pay for the work.
Employment Scheme. We all went to the ceremony
at Perth Concert Hall, which was a good
night out! (see photo on page 28)
Lewis has also arranged a visit to the hub by
John Swinney MSP, which we'll tell you about
next month.
The Youth Achievement group is working
well, and everyone is looking forward to our
trip to Skye! We will be doing group activities,
a few trips, and of course camping so hopefully
the weather will be ok!
The hub is open to anyone who is 15 or over,
so if you fancy dropping in you'll get a warm
welcome.
After a 20 month campaign
to attract support
from both the Black
Watch Regimental Family
and from the public
for our plans for Balhousie
Castle and The
Black Watch Museum,
we are proud to be able to report a magnificent
response so far, with a total of over
£1.85 million already donated or pledged.
This has enabled the Trustees to go ahead
with the purchase of the Castle, which became
their property in December 2008. It has
also enabled detailed building plans to be
commissioned by ANTA, the well known
September (see page 15). The Development
Committee and our Patron the Duke of
Rothesay support the plans and we are very
close to submitting a planning application with
the local Council. The Black Watch Regimental
Association and other regimental trusts
have donated or promised a total of
£502,000. In addition, individuals from within
the Regimental Family have donated or promised
a truly splendid £650,000 so far.
The Appeal is now focused on submitting
an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund,
as well as applications to corporate bodies,
and to charitable trusts and foundations which
are known to support projects like ours. We
are also hoping to secure support from our
THE BLACK WATCH HERITAGE APPEAL UPDATE
The outcome of the consultation on the
either on the feedback form or
in person, 23 are against any change to
the management, while 20 are in fav our
We still need to raise just under £1.4 million
to reach the Appeal target of £3.23 million
and, while we hope and expect that foundations,
charities and corporate bodies – and
indeed the Heritage Lottery Fund – will cover
some of this shortfall, we still need significant
financial support to put our vision in place. If
you are able to offer further support to the
biggest capital project ever undertaken by the
Black Watch Museum Trustees, we would be
very pleased indeed to add your donation to
the present total. Based on the timescales of
our Heritage Lottery bid and subject to their
decision (and results of further fundraising)
we hope to be in a position to start our building
work from November 2011.
VOICE DISTRIBUTION
Barbara & Paul Prettyman were
sorry to hear that Ruth Fotheringham,
one of our original
Voiceteers, has decided to hang up her bag
and stop pounding the paths of Parkside Road
and Morrison Terrace. The folk of these two
streets have received a super service from
Ruth over the last twelve years. But have no
fear as the distributors contacted Tracy Stewart,
who had been on the reserve list for several
months. She was up for the challenge and
started deliveries with the July issue.
Requests were received from Hazel Tripney,
who delivers in Cambridge Street and Quad, to
reduce numbers she takes round. She has
kept the original part of Cambridge Street but
the rest of the newer properties in the link to
St. Ninian’s Road and Cambridge Quad have
been passed on to Agnes Suttie. A similar
request came from Liz Davie who delivers
Albert Street, and she now shares the round
with Stuart Clark.
We would like to thank Ruth for all her efforts
over the years and to wish her well for the
future. We would also like to thank Hazel and
Liz for their hard work and we hope these
changes will help them to carry on delivering in
the years to come. We welcome Tracy, Agnes
and Stuart to our happy band of Voiceteers.
If any readers would like to be added to the
waiting and holiday/illness list they should
contact Paul or Barabara, whose contact details
are on page 5 of the Voice. Thank you.

BESTSELLING LOCAL WRITERS
SCORE ANOTHER HIT
Nethergate Writers, a group of local writers, sprang
from a creative writing class at Dundee University
taught by Esther Read. Members come from all
over Tayside including Alyth, Blairgowrie and Coupar
Angus.
In recent years the group has published anthololgies
of short stories and poems which have each, in
turn, been bestsellers in Dundee Waterstones.
"Whodunwhat" was no exception and in fact it
even got placed in the Waterstone's national bestseller
list for a few days.
"Whodunwhat" contains work by 31 writers and
was inspired by ideas provided by readers in local
libraries. Readers were invited to suggest a
"character and situation" idea. Many great ideas
were suggested: e.g. "A man attends a class reunion
and sees a former classmate who bullied him 25
years ago. He plots his revenge" - suggested by
Christine Ferguson.
Members of the group chose an idea from a long
list of possibilities.
In so me cases the same idea was chosen by
more than one writer, but something very different
was made of it.
As the most local member of the group I am delighted
to have my story, "The Box Room" included
in this anthology. Writers are always told to write
about what they know. In this story I have, to some
extent, followed this advice, so those of you who
read it will see that I have drawn on my experience
of living in an old house filled with things of historical
interest.
In last year's book, "If Stones Could Speak" , a
collection of stories based in the Tayside area, I
retold the story of the white snake of the Reekie
Linn.
GIANT WOOD WASPS
By Paul Ramsay
Some years ago Andrew Barbour came here with
some of his family to visit the places where our beavers
live. We walked round the Big Pond - an easier matter
in those days before the beavers had really got
underway with their reconfiguration of the landscape.
When we reached the manmade barrage that closes
the pond Andrew wondered what would happen to the
pond if the spruces that grew along the top of the dam
fell down. Would the trees blow down, upend the root
plate and destroy the dam? I had no answer at the
time, but here is another possibility:
First, the roots of the trees are drowned. Next, fungi
and wood boring insects such as the Giant Wood
Wasp (Urocerus gigas) invade them.
Many people find the sight of this splendid beast
intimidating because they think that the imposing spike
at the rear end of the female is a sting. It is not a sting,
but a tube for inserting eggs into trees. The ovipositor
doubles as a saw with which she can excavate tunnels
into which she can lay her eggs. The wood wasp is
harmless to humans.
This creature, of which I was reminded last week by
seeing a couple, has a symbiotic relationship with
certain wood destroying fungi (Amylostereum Sp.) -
see http://www.aphis.usda.gov/plant_health/
plant_pest_info/pest_detection/downloads/pra/
ugigaspra.pdf.
The wood wasp inoculates the fungus into the tree
when she lays her eggs. By the time the egg hatches
and becomes a larva, enough of the fungus's mycelium
has developed for it to become the infant wood wasp's
food. In addition to providing the larva with food by
rotting the sapwood, the mycelium of the fungus makes
it possible for the creature to gnaw its way round the
inside of the tree trunk it occupies, creating the tunnels
and galleries that are characteristic of it.
Male Giant Wood Wasps are seldom seen. They live
high up in the woodland canopy, where they meet and
mate with the females. These then return to the lower
part of the tree trunk, up to about three metres above
ground level, to lay their eggs in the way I have
described.
To go back to the barrage that closes the Big Pond
here at Bamff: eventually the combined activities of the
wood wasp larvae and fungi, weaken the dead spruce
to the extent that it falls over, but without taking its
roots with it, and the barrage retains its structural
integrity. I wonder if this will be the fate of the other
trees along the barrage.
The trees in which Giant Wood Wasps lay their eggs
are usually enfeebled by an already existing problem
such as attack by a fungus (such as Fomes annosus),
or a struggle with a difficult environment - such as poor
soil conditions, flooding, or drought.
Wild boar break open rotting logs in search of the
grubs and larvae that they expect to find within. This is
an interesting added dimension of the complex
processes that return once living trees (and all other
living things) to soil. Anybody who wishes
to see an illustrated version of this piece should go to:
COMMUNITY COUNCIL UPDATE
You may be aware that application has been made
for four wind turbines to be built at ground at Welton
of Creuchies. This land lies within the Blairgowrie
and Rattray Community area. However, it is proposed
that everything required for the build of the
site be brought via Alyth. The build is estimated to
take five months. The applicant and owner of the
ground has committed in his outline planning application
to PKC that should his application be given
the go ahead then he will contribute financially to
local community projects.
Should the application get approval from PKC we
will engage with the applicants offer to see what can
be achieved on our communities’ behalf. Within the
non technical summary of the plan I note a section
marked Public Shares Offer and Community Investment.
It reads: - “ The developer is committed to
offering the wider community an opportunity to invest
in the Welton of Creuchies wind project” We
have invited Mr Ferguson’s team to provide us with
an update on this proposal at our July meeting. I
apologise for not being able to previously advise you
of this but agreeing a date and suitable attendees
has been problematic. I will summarise the meeting
for the next copy of the Voice, but as always you
can find fuller detail immediately available on our
web site at http://alythcc.ning.com/
We still have three vacancies on our Community
Council. Anyone who is on the voter’s role here in
Alyth is able to join. All of the office holders positions
are already taken so should you wish to volunteer
just to be part of the Committee then you would only
be asked to attend one meeting per month. Interested?
Then contact me at Alythcommunitycouncil@pkc.gov.uk
19 th July 2010
Dear Alyth Voice,
An Elusive Relation
I have been to the Alyth Family History Project
twice now and must congratulate Irene and her
team on a fascinating archive. I have scanned
and given Irene all the pictures contained in the
albums of my grandmother and great aunt and
would encourage anyone who has past connections
with Alyth to add their family’s story to this
project. On my first visit I found a school photograph
of my Great Uncle William Whyte who was
killed in the First World War.
The Alyth Voice must be read by people all
over the world as I have read many of the back
issues of the Alyth Voice online and note that
there are a number of letters from around the
world asking for information relating to their Alyth
family history.
I have been tracing my family history for a
number of years but there is one part of the
family and a family story that has eluded me.
My grandfather, James Whyte, his three
brothers, David, Robert and William along with
their sister Elizabeth were born at 81 Airlie Street
between 1887 and 1896. Their father, my great
grandfather, was Robert Thom Whyte and he
was born in Stock Street, Paisley in 1857.
Elizabeth, known to me as Aunty Tibby, was my
Great Aunt. When I was a boy we often visited
and came on holiday to stay at 81 Airlie Street
where Aunty Tibby still lived and where she had
a dressmakers shop beneath the house. She
had worked for Sandilands, one of the biggest
drapers in Alyth. When they closed she opened
her own shop as a drapers and dressmakers at
the top of Toutie Street. Later she moved the
business down to Airlie Street.
My mother, who lives in Montrose, has an
opal ring and a necklace cut in the shape of
Australia. The story is these came from an aunt
in Australia. My mother knows that her aunt
Tibby wrote to a relative in Australia called
Janet.
From my research into the Paisley side of the
family, the 1881 census shows my great grandfather’s
brother William living in Paisley and he
has an eight year old daughter Janet. I suspect
this might be the “ Aunty Janet” who had emigrated
and lived in Australia. She would be a
cousin of Aunty Tibby and Grandfather Whyte.
Towards the end of her life Aunty Tibby lived
in Birkenhead for a number of years before returning
to Alyth and living at 9 High Street. She
died on 12 November 1975.
So this is my plea for help, if anyone can!
Does anyone remember the Whyte family who
lived at 81 Airlie Street and in particular know of
this Aunt Janet who Aunty Tibby wrote to in
Australia. If you happen to be reading this online
in Australia are you descended from this family?
Any information would be welcome either to me
directly or through the Alyth Voice.
Many Thanks in anticipation,
GLENISLA GOLF DEVELOPMENT
Mackenzie/Dalziel (July issue) have struck a
chord. Why didn`t I object to the proposed
development on Glenisla golf course? Because
I thought it would be so obviously lacking
in credibility that no one would take it seriously
– except, apparently, our elected members!
Can`t blame the officials this time.
Just i magine, 500 people contained in a
corner of the golf course, representing a quarter
of the existing population with only one
vehicular exit. How do you absorb that number
of people without disrupting the social cohesion
of the town? Let alone the impact of the
hotel, Nursing home & business units.
Of course there is room for housing development
in Alyth, in addition to the proposals already
approved for the High Street & behind
the school but in such a way & of such a size
that they enable integration with the existing
residents. It is not good enough to justify it as a
remedy for a financially ailing golf course.
Could you ask your readers if any of them
knew James MacKenzie of Damend, Alyth
I realize that many of his pals have passed,
3rd July 2010
Dear Editor,
Yesterday I came across your very professional
publication, ALYTH VOICE, while
searching online for information on Keith Ramsay
of Dunedin. I found John MacKenzie's
article on him and Captain John Whitson.
My interest came from the fact that my
grandmother's brother, Patrick Pattullo, married
Keith Ramsay's second daughter, Caroline
Montague Scott Ramsay, in 1902 in Dunedin.
One of the presiding ministers was the
Rev. John MacKenzie, who is mentioned in the
article and who had married Caroline's elder
sister, Janet. Patrick Pattullo was one of the
groomsmen at their wedding.
Patrick Pattullo was the second son of Peter
and Helen (Smith) Pattullo who farmed Eassie,
just "down the road" from Alyth, so it is possible
that he had a letter of introduction to the
Ramsays when he left for New Zealand.
Patrick emigrated in 1890, probably
because farming was in the doldrums at the
time, to take up a post with the New Zealand
and Australia Land Company at their NZ office
in Dunedin. Ironically it was this company that
had sent the first shipment of refrigerated lamb
on the DUNEDIN under the command of Captain
Whitson, thus contributing to the woes of
the British farmers and sending so many
young men like Patrick overseas!
Keith Ramsay's only son, Keith Stuart Ramsay,
in 1900 married Rosie Glendining, daughter
of Thomas Glendining, a member of the
well-known New Zealand firm of Ross and
Glendining. Bestman at that wedding was
Patrick Pattullo's younger brother, Frank, who
had emigrated to Dunedin in 1896.
Cheers,
J. Marie Bassett

BLAIRGOWRIE & EAST PERTHSHIRE
WALKING FESTIVAL
2nd/3rd/4th October 2009
Now in its Seventh year the Blairgowrie and East
Perthshire Walking Festival will run over the weekend of
2nd to 4th October. This takes participants across some
of the iconic long distance trails, drove roads, and high
hills of our corner of the Cairngorm National Park. As an
almost entirely self-financing event we have prepared a
short sharp and challenging three days with something for
most abilities. There are five new very strenuous walks
including a number of Munros.
There will be 4 walks each day: a section of the
Cateran Trail, two high level long distance trail, with
Munro diversions, and a low level easy walk.
The festival also includes the iconic Jock's Road and all
walks use minibuses to take you to the start and meet you
at the end of each walk to transport you back to Blairgowrie.
Most walks also stop off or even finish at an inn for
well-earned refreshments. Each walk is accompanied by
qualified leaders and first aiders.
Registration and Event HQ is at the Royal Hotel
www.theroyalhotel.org.uk Blairgowrie, who as in previous
years we have to thank for hosting us.
Breakfasts, evening meals, packed lunches and of
course accommodation can be found there.
The festival is organised on a voluntary basis by Blairgowrie
and District Nex t Steps the pre-eminent health
walking group in Scotland and supported by NSC Design
Ltd Outdoor Adventures.
Thanks go to the landowners, farmers and estates
whose land we will visit, all the various volunteers, leaders
and ex pert guides and not least Iain McLean of the Royal
Hotel. Sue Cole, Blairgowrie & District Nex t Steps
POLICE REPORT
Tayside Police, along with
Scotland’s other Police forces
have just completed a two
week annual Summer Safety
Campaign which targeted
those people who choose to
drink or take drugs and then drive.
During last year’s campaign 31 drivers were arrested
for drink or drug driving in Tayside (24 men
and 6 women). A third of those were 25 years-old or
younger, while two thirds were between the ages of
26 and 55 years-old.
The public were extremely supportive of previous
campaigns. Indeed, around half of all those arrested
by the police were as a result of a call from a member
of the public.
The overwhelming majority of people recognise
the obvious dangers of this type of behaviour, not
only to the driver and their passengers but to other
road users as well. The public can be assured that
Tayside Police has a constant focus on drink/drug
drivers throughout the year.
During the height of summer, when there is an
increase in public events and social gatherings it is
important to raise awareness of this issue and remind
drivers of their responsibilities as road users.
Anyone who chooses to take alcohol or drugs and
drive and is found to be either over the limit or who
is unfit to drive can expect to be arrested, kept in
custody and put before the courts, perhaps spending
a weekend in the cells.
Tayside Police will fully utilise powers to require
breath tests under the law and those involved in
road traffic accidents, committing moving traffic
offences or suspected of having consumed alcohol
will be breath tested.
If you are going to a social engagement with
friends nominate a driver and with the money you
save on a taxi fare why don’t you buy them soft
drinks throughout the event. Alternatively use a
local taxi firm. It will save you a lot of money in the
long run should you lose your licence through drink
driving.
Any member of the public wishing to report a
drink or drug driver should contact Tayside Police
immediately on 0300 111 2222, or the charity
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Providing the
registration mark of the vehicle will assist us greatly.
SCOUT REPORT
You may have heard this before
– I’ve got a little behind –
no, not that way ! It’s not carrying
out activities at this time of
year, it’s finding time to sit
down and recall them all.
To conclude their summer programme, the Beavers
held an international night complete with barbeque on the
Market Muir. The Cubs held a sausage sizzle complete
with added protein of a few midgies which condescended
to pay a visit. The Scouts had a Patrol barbeque at which
one of our new recruits introduced us to a new dish –
spaghetti on a roll. Apparently the trick is to spoon a liberal
quantity of this devilish slithery matter onto a roll and
then clamp your jaws together. Kitchen towels were simply
inadequate to cope with the inevitable spillage, and if
this becomes a trend I think we will have to kit them out
with wet suits or at the very least a powerwasher. Still “It’s
a dull the day you don’t learn something” .
Another of our activities was our Father’s Day Frolics.
This took the form of a family day hopefully tailored to suit
all tastes and ages. The first option was a day hike starting
at 10 am and I am glad we had plenty of Leaders
supporting this as we had to divide into two groups. Not
that there was a competition to see who was first back,
but the group travelling anticlockwise must have gone
digital at some point as the sun had travelled a fair distance
before their return. Now that I think on it, we didn’t
see that whole group report in, so if anyone spots some
poor souls wandering about the Hill – take my advice and
maintain a low profile.
The second option was a Treasure Hunt in the Den
which had been devised and set out by Patrick West and
supported by Cath Jackson. This proved a pleasant activity
which was enjoyed by all. It’s just as well we had the
answers for the quiz as it proved too tricky for yours truly.
Our final option was a barbeque at the Scout Hut which
many of the participants attended. Our catering staff were
kept busy for a while as our guests arrived, but none went
away hungry which illustrates the effectiveness of their
endeavours. I know all the helpers for the day would be
most embarrassed if I named them all – so I will, as without
their hard work, this event could never have been
undertaken – Cath Jackson , Lynda McNaughton, Fiona
Tasker, Bruce Arnott, Jack Brown, Kenny Moyes, Norman
West, Patrick West.
The Scouts and Ex plorer Scouts held a summer camp
at Fergus, Glenisla. The concept for this year’s camp was
to provide a back to basics event. No mobile phones as
there was no signal, no pocket money needed as no
shops to buy anything. I wish I had added no wind or rain,
but these were an added feature which provided a challenge.
I will provide a fuller report of our antics later as, if not,
this article would have to be published in several volumes,
however I am happy to report that our charges entered
into the spirit of the event and demonstrated a willingness
to throw themselves into all the activities that were arranged.
To them I say - you only get out what you put in, so if
you had a good time it was because you played the game
(s) well. Well done!
Teddy has once again arrived in Alyth, Scotland but
this year and has decided to join in the Government’s
“ Healthy Eating” project. Teddy can’t decide what kind of
fruit or vegetables he really likes so businesses in Alyth
to assist him are displaying lots of different fruits and
vegetables in teddy’s paws or at his feet in their windows.
The competition runs from the 3rd of July to the 31st of
August. Collect a free entry form from Alyth Post Office
names of the fruit(s ) and/or vegetable(s), there may be
more than one Teddy in some of the windows.
For the young ones taking part please look and listen
for the traffic as you cross the roads.
Once you have answered all the questions please
take your entry forms to J. & M. Kay, Ladies & Gents
TEN YEARS OF THE KIRK SHOP
Ready to put the FUN in fundraising, from left: Jim Lindsay, Ruth Jolly, Alison O’Brien, Mary Hogg, Jim MacFarlane, Dorothy Lindsay, Nancy Muir,
Once again, the generosity of the people of Alyth
and surrounding areas as well as the many visitors
to our town has proved the "Kirk Shop" to be a
resounding success in this our 10th year, raising
£8,161! Little did we know back in 2001 we'd still
be "playing shoppies" ten years on!
I know I speak for many when I say we put our
hearts and souls into this particular venture simply
because we get much, much more out of it! Of
course without the many volunteers and the vast
number of customers, the "Kirk Shop" would be a
non-event.
A special "thank you" must be ex tended to
Stewart Macdonald who once again advised us on
electrical goods. The cross-stitch picture by Mrs.
Eileen Colley was won by Mrs. Drew of Meigle and
The support and encouragement the fundraisers
receive from the Alyth community is ver y
much appr eciated indeed and means that plans
for the 11th Kirk Shop are already underway - don't
panic team, it's only the date so far - 4/7/11!!!!
ALYTH IN BLOOM
Help came to us from a most unexpected source. We were planting what
seemed like "hundreds" of plants into the beds at the Blairgowrie entrance
to Alyth, and we were concerned about the extremely dry condition of the
soil (like a desert!), when the thought occurred "what about the Fire Brigade?"
Would they consider giving the flower beds a good drenching? (on
a training night of course).
"Yes", they would. WONDERFUL. So a big thank you to Alan Ramsay and
his gallant crew, for coming to the rescue of ALYTH IN BLOOM, and, that
was without having to call 999!!
Thank you again, Marguerite McKenzie, Chairperson
ALYTH WALKING GROUP
Starting from Rattray the birthplace of Cargill, the group took Cargill’s path to link to
the road to Drimmie, turning off right to visit the stone circle at Craighall, climbing
gently to pass purple dragonflies in the small manmade lochan to the orchid fringed
shores of Glendams. From Drimmie Woods it was a delightful descent with views of
Alyth through the Den to a welcome cup of tea and scones at the Dirliebane Cafe.
The August walk to the Kilry area is on Saturday 14th. Meet in Alyth Square at 1p.m.
James Adam
9 th October 1925 – 30 th June 2010
Some of the readers of The Voice will already be
aware that Jim Adam, former Chairman of the
Community Council has passed away. Here we
commit a few words to paper as a mark of respect
to him.
Jim was born on 9th October 1925 in St Mary’s
Street, Dundee. He was the youngest of five children
to parents working in the Dundee jute mills.
Both Jim’s father and grandfather were born here
in Alyth. Jim’s father was born in James Street,
Alyth. That tie to our town would bring Jim and his
family back here in later life.
Jim attended at Ancrum P rimary, Dundee,
Over 200 of the British Army’s top marksmen and
women, who were the top scorers in the qualifying
competitions in the UK, Germany, and Cyprus,
competed for Her Majesty The Queen’s Medal in
the British Army Operational Shooting Competition
at Bisley recently.
The various types of shooting involved included
short, medium, and long range engagement of
targets at ranges between 25 - 600 metres using
the standard military issue combat assault rifle.
The competitions are based upon the type of
engagements that the soldier is likely to face in
Afganistan. Former Alyth lad, Morgan Cook was
one such soldier.
Although WO2 Cook won by a clear 23 points in
last year's competition, which was equivalent to
the points difference between 1st and 2nd place
combined for the last 5 years, he shot even more
convincingly this year. WO2 Cook finished 45
points ahead, which is the largest margin ever
recorded since the first Queen's Medal Competition
in 1869. In addition to this achievement, WO2
where he was noted for his dedication to his studies.
Like many of his friends he was called up
during the Second World War. I remember him
telling me that he joined the queue at the recruiting
office with three of his friends. They were all sent
to the Army and lost their lives at Dunkirk. He was
sent to the Fleet Air Arm. He moaned to the recruiting
Sergeant at the time but accepted later
that it had been a twist of fate that had saved his
life. During his service he met Hilda, whom he later
married.
In 1946 Jim became the Chairman of Caird
Housing Association in Dundee at 21 years of age.
For the nex t 61 years he held numerous posts in
different organisations helping others.
In search of secure work and a future for his
family, for he now had a son, Dennis, Jim joined
Hilda’s father in the family business. He moved
from his beloved Scotland to the south coast of
England where he continued to work in local communities.
Such was his drive to ensure that he had
work and food for his family that he held duel City
and Guild Certificates as both a Plumber and Electrician.
Jim told me of one of his achievements. He
designed a Community Centre when they were still
unknown entities. As Chairman of the committee
on the estate where it was being built he ensured
that a stage was the central theme of the Centre,
for youth theatre was a passion he held dearly.
At the end of his working life, in 1982, Jim and
Hilda moved north to Alyth. It had long been Jim’s
desire to return home to where his father and
grandfather were born. In 1996 Jim was the founding
member of Alyth Youth Theatre. He produced
SWINNEY VISITS ALYTH MUSEUM
John Swinney MSP visited the Laing Photographic
Collection at Alyth Museum on 25th June. Assistant
Paul Prettyman welcomes John to the museum,
pictured left, and John viewing ‘A Presentation at
Alyth Bowling Club, 1932’ pictured right. Speaking of
the visit, John said “The ex hibition displays every part
of Alyth life from berry picking to church fêtes. If constituents
are at all interested in East and Highland
Perthshire, I would strongly recommend that they
take the time to visit the ex hibition.”
As well as showcasing Alyth, the collection shows
Blairgowrie, Coupar Angus, Meigle, Ardler, Newtyle,
Bridge of Cally, the Glens, Aberfeldy, Dundee, Muirhead
and the surrounding district.
ALYTH LAD ARMY’S TOP MARKSMAN AGAIN
Cook was also presented with the Fattorini Bowl
and Gold medal for winning the top International
Champion award, beating all competitors from the
UK, Canada, Oman, and New Zealand.
WO2 Cook was appointed Captain of the Army
Target Pistol Team just last year,
and has already achieved the only
qualifying score in the UK to be
considered for competing in the
Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 2010
Commonwealth Games in Delhi in
October. He will find out within the
nex t few weeks if he is to represent
Scotland at these Games.
A Chief Instructor at the Defence
Intelligence and Security Centre in
Chicksands, Bedford, WO2 Cook is
quietly enjoying his success with his
wife Jo, son Cameron, and daughter
Caitlin. He is already looking to July
2011, to defend his title, and to
become the first person ever to win
27
shows, sometimes directed, sometimes wrote the
scripts. He encouraged young writers and actors,
some of whom went on to study drama at university.
He retired from AYT in 2004 and was made
honorary president at a farewell party.
Jim was awarded Citizenship in 1999 by Perth &
Kinross Council for his service in improving the
quality of life for older people in the county as part
of the International Year of Older Persons. He was
Alyth Citizen of the Year in 2000. The National
Neighbourhood Watch Award for Community Spirit
was presented to Jim in 2008 by John Swinney
MSP.
At 82 years of age and after serving the various
communities in which he had lived he decided that
it was time to hang up his gavel. Jim’s passions
were people and communities. Such was his passion
that at one time or other he has been seriously
involved with, Alyth Gala Committee, Alyth
Christmas Lights, the Drumderg Panel, Alyth Youth
Theatre, he was a member of Alyth 50 plus group,
he was Chairman of the Perth and Kinross Convention
of 50 plus clubs, a member of the Quality
of Life Trust and of course Alyth Community Council
in various capacities.
Whilst we remember Jim, our thoughts also go
to Hilda. Without Hilda’s support throughout their
64 years together Jim would not have been able to
carry out his great passions. A point he continued
to remind us about until his end.
Jim passed away in his sleep at home on 30th June
2010. Jim always provided wise council. He is
much missed by Hilda, son Dennis, and his granddaughters,
Sophie, Ceri and Robyn. Stuart Clark
ACC Chairman
HM The Queen's Medal for the third year in succession.
He is also to train full time in 2011, in
preparation for selection into Team GB to compete
at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Photo
