ANSWER: Lead turn by 1% <strong>of</strong> TAS or 3NM<br />
15. IFR PROCEDURAL CALLS<br />
Three calls are performed at each turn point: Two-Minute Prior, Mark-On-Top, and<br />
Wings- Level.<br />
a. The Two-Minute Prior call is given 2 minutes from the calculated ETA for the<br />
upcoming turn point. If the turn point is estimated at 15 + 30, a two-minute prior call<br />
should be given at 13 + 30. The Two-Minute Prior call includes:<br />
(1) Outbound heading for course.<br />
(2) Estimated time <strong>of</strong> arrival (ETA) at, and description <strong>of</strong> navigation to the next<br />
checkpoint.<br />
EXAMPLE: “Two Minutes prior to Montgomery; Outbound heading 310° for a course <strong>of</strong> 315°,<br />
ETA to DELBE is 23 + 45. We’re doing a point to point to the Meridian 043° at 87nm.”<br />
b. The Mark-On-Top call consists <strong>of</strong>:<br />
(1) Left/Right XXX (clear turn)<br />
(2) Time (at minimum DME or needle passing the 90° benchmark<br />
(3) Place<br />
(4) Fuel on board<br />
(5) NAVAID (remains the same or switches to next station if on a direct leg)<br />
EXAMPLE: “Left 310°” (at lead point), “Time 15 + 30, Place Montgomery, Fuel 3800#’s,<br />
NAVAID switching to Meridian.”<br />
c. The Wings-Level call is initiated when the aircraft is established on an outbound course<br />
from the turn point (navigate prior to TP procedures). The Wings-Level call consists <strong>of</strong>:<br />
(1) Fuel +/- preflight<br />
(2) Fuel at the IAF<br />
EXAMPLE: “We are 500 lbs above preflight, I estimate 2250 at the initial.”<br />

a. Ground speed checks<br />
A manual ground speed check is required on the first leg after level <strong>of</strong>f. Once<br />
accomplished, compare with the aircraft GSP readout. If it is determined to be reliable (+/-<br />
10 kts), the student may use the ground speed readout <strong>of</strong> the EHSI. Keep in mind, GSP<br />
uses rate <strong>of</strong> change in DME. Consequently, the following criteria apply for GSP or manual<br />
groundspeed checks to be valid:
