5.4.3 Installation of the through hull fitting in Yachts - Schema<br />

It is good practice for yachts to use a through hull fitting<br />

with an integrated strainer. The through hull fitting (raw<br />

water intake) is often mounted against the sailing direction<br />

to induce more water intake for cooling.<br />

For Panda generators, the through hull inlet should NOT point in the<br />

sailing direction! When sailing at higher speeds more water will be<br />

forced into the inlet than the pump can handle and your generator<br />

will flood.<br />

In order to keep the suction resistance in the line at a minimum, the raw water intake system must have an inner<br />

diameter of at least 1" (25 mm).<br />

This applies also to installation components such as through-hull fitting, sea cock, raw water filter etc.<br />

The intake suction line should be kept as short as possible. Install the raw water inlet in close proximity to the genset.<br />

After start-up the cooling water quantity must be measured<br />

(e.g. by catching at the exhaust). The flow rate, as<br />

well as the necessary cross section of the cooling water<br />

pipe see section 8.10, “Diameter of conduits,” on<br />

page 212<br />
