The story is set in Turkey, near the Black Sea, at the end of the nineteenth century.<br />
Mustafa is in love with Esma. When his father’s death reveals a long kept<br />
secret – Mustafa is a Christian not the Moslem everyone assumed - many in the<br />
community are upset by the news including Esma’s family who marry her off<br />
to Mehmet, a Moslem. Twenty years later, Esma is unhappily married to<br />
Mehmet and Fotis (Mustafa) is a widower with a son, Niko, a guerilla fighter.<br />
Their paths cross with dramatic consequences for all.<br />
