OWNER REPORT
"The primary considerations
in planning a major voyage
are the same as less
ambitious outings for family
and friends - safety,
reliability, and comfort. Our
Oyster meets those
requirements and more."
alone – an unimaginable situation prior to
Oyster. I handle the dock lines, drop and pick
up and secure a mooring – preferably with
my sailing gloves on. OK, I’m still a bit prissy!
But a girl does have to protect her manicure.
Absolutely best of all, I’m no longer fearful. I
feel safe and comfortable which allows me to
share in my family’s love of sailing. There was
a time in other boats when the site of large
waves or a large wake would make me
cringe. No more. Our Oyster slices thru
wakes and waves like a hot knife thru butter.
While heeled and catching more than a bit of
ocean spray, I can now confidently cuddle
my granddaughters in my lap, as we squeal
with delight "YEEEHAAW! Ride ‘em
cowgirls". Terrific fun! These are modest,
perhaps even laughable, achievements.
However, for me, and those who know and
love me, they are major accomplishments.
When we first began this adventure our
family and friends were a little apprehensive
for me, as was I. Our younger daughter,
Renee, only half teasing, asked her father if
his intention was to "keep Mom drugged for
weeks at a time" for the extended periods we
planned to be on board. Tempting as that
might have been for him, fortunately it wasn’t
necessary.
My girlfriends thought I’d gone loopy for
agreeing to live on board a boat – any boat –
even for a little while. One or two still think I
need rescuing, as if a cult had cast a spell on
me, which quite possibly it has – the cult of
happy Oyster owners. Their husbands, also my
good friends, gave me kudos for attempting
what was for me a gutsy challenge. I suspect
they felt in their hearts, as I did, I would regain
Playing at the Nav station Venture's beautifully fitted and spacious saloon
my senses in short order, and return home to
my much loved California. After all I’m not
now, nor have I ever been the rough and
tumble tomboy. I appreciate my comforts and
small luxuries. Much to everyone’s surprise
including my own, I’ve managed quite happily.
Truth to tell, one doesn’t need to be rescued
from our Oyster 62.
From the very beginning Peter treated this as
OUR project, not his private, self-indulgent, toy.
He took my suggestions and preferences very
seriously without being condescending, and
quietly went about implementing them. He
respected the fact that this was a major
