FOUNDER’S MESSAGE
VERNON ERB
Founder & Chairman of the Board
The articles I have written over the past number of years were
usually events of history of our company. In this issue I wish
to share with you two truck trips I took this summer and fall.
Our grandson Tyler graduated from high school in New Waterford,
NS and was accepted in a Tech Institution in London,
ON. I decided it would be great if I could take a load to the
Maritimes and bring Tyler back to Ontario. Our dispatchers
were very accommodating and set up a load with three deliveries,
ending in Sydney, NS. There was also another load to
the same area with driver Howard Lebold.
As many of you know, Howard is one of our most senior drivers
in our International Division. He is also one of the first
drivers, along with Wendell and Jerry Baan, to venture into
the U.S. lanes many years ago. Howard and I have known
each other for at least seventy years, growing up in the same
community, going to the same church, Sunday school, young
peoples groups, etc. It was such a pleasure traveling together
and communicating on the C.B. radio, mostly about the good
times we had growing up on the farm and the fun things we
did as teenagers.
Traveling east of Toronto I got a call from my grandson Kyle.
He finished a trip to Montreal for Erb-X (Erb Transportation
Solutions Inc.) and was returning home. Of course he wanted
to meet us for a free
lunch from Grandpa
so we arrange to
meet at the Joyceville
Truck Stop for a
break.
Howard Lebold and I shaking hands before we left.
We were still friends after the trip. (I think!)
While we were travelling
through Quebec
we tried to get local
information regarding
truck stops on
the C.B., but didn’t
get a response. We
later learned that once you’re east of the tunnel in Montreal,
truckers do not use channel 19 as the public channel. Howard
figured that out as he was sort of our navigator even though
this was new territory for him. (By the way, we had identical
trucks 9900 International with reliable Cummins power.)
On Monday evening I needed fuel for my reefer so we
stopped somewhere around Amherst, NS at an Irving Truck
Stop. (We had a slight disagreement whether we were in NB
or NS, but I’m sure Howard was
right!) Howard thought he knew
how the card system worked but
there were a lot of buttons you
have to press before it spits out
fuel. We tried but it didn’t seem
to dispense fuel. We had my card
and his card mixed up and didn’t
know which pin number went
with what card! An attendant walked by but didn’t seem to
be concerned with our predicament. We told him we were
two old farm boys and in our day you had to simply turn
the pump by hand to dispense fuel from the tank or barrels.
Life was simple then. We eventually managed to get
fuel and departed ways; I drove to Debert, NS for my first
delivery and Howard went on toHalifax.
My second delivery was in Halifax and my GPS guided me
through the city very well, until I came to a big bridge where
heavy trucks were not allowed to cross. After a great deal
of detouring and frustration I made my delivery on time
and headed to Sydney for the next morning’s appointment.
From there I bobtailed to New Waterford to Tyler’s house.
We had lunch at the restaurant with his mom and friends
and then loaded his guitars, drums and other belongings
into the truck. Our sleeper cab was pretty packed but we
left enough room on the bunks for a good nights sleep. We
picked up a load of Seafood in Cap Pele, NS and drove to
Salisbury, NB to meet up with Howard for the return trip
home.
We’ve been in the Maritimes by car several times before
and I often thought I would love to travel the wide open,
rolling highways by truck. This summer I had the opportunity
and a good reason to do so and I thoroughly enjoyed it,
especially spending time with Tyler and getting somewhat
reacquainted again with Howard.
About a month later I decided I needed another reason to
go on another long trip. This time it was to bring a car home
from Calgary. Our grandson Justin moved to Calgary several
years ago to work in heavy construction. His car developed
some engine noises so he parked it for several years and
bought a pickup truck, which was more practical for the
large construction sites.
Our dispatchers were very pleased again to have me move
their loads so they arranged a trip to Calgary with two deliveries.
They also gave me a ProStar with a Maxx Force
engine which I had requested. These trucks have virtually
no engine sound in the cab. After going through several
small towns and shifting down to the ninth gear, I forgot to

FOUNDER’S MESSAGE
shift back to tenth for a few miles. I realized my RPM reading
was at 1900 instead of 1300. (However, Wendell did a
recap on my trip through the black box gizmo and was quite
complimentary on my driving results. No hard braking, 4%
idle time, 8.2 mile per gallon! I must admit I wasn’t at gross
weight with LTL in both directions.)
Travelling through Northern Ontario on Route 17 was absolutely
beautiful. The highways have been significantly improved
since many years ago when I made frequent trips
to Thunder Bay with the old gas or diesel powered trucks.
This ProStar was such a pleasure to drive through the rocky
hills. I planned to stop in Thunder Bay to see my son Darryl
and his family on the weekend, but they were gone fishing. I
dropped in at the Thunder Bay terminal, but being the weekend
there were only a few people there.
We met quite a few Erb trucks on the way home and would
promptly get on the CB to have a little chat, but we found
there was no response except for a few who would get back
to me. Since then I’ve learned CB talk is not as popular as it
was years ago. Before I got to Wawa a driver heard me and
said he was Bud Goodwin. Bud worked for us out of Fearman
Meats in the 70’s and later was an owner operator for quite
some time with Erb. We had coffee and lunch in Wawa and I
found out Bud was coming back to us again. Welcome back!
While talking to a few K-DAC drivers on the CB they told me
a driver for Choice Reefer was behind me, but couldn’t connect.
After some time he caught up to me and I found out it
was Reg Delehunt, a former Erb driver and OTA Road Knight.
We had a good visit over supper in Winnipeg.
Driving through the prairies was interesting. I loved seeing
the farmers with their huge combines harvesting their crops.
We arrived in Calgary and had supper at Justin’s house. The
next day I made my two deliveries and in the evening after
Justin was off work he brought his car to their construction
site. He levelled some ground to build a dock so I would be
able to back up to it and load his car. He used a big DIIH
Caterpillar dozer to do this. He said, “Grandpa you have to
drive this machine!” I did. Apparently it is the largest dozer
Caterpillar has and weighs about 100 tons. He operates it
as well as excavators, graders and other machinery. The
next day he took me to another site where he was presently
working and was pleased I was there to see all the
large earth moving machines in action.
Dispatch said I could go back to Winnipeg and get loaded
with LTL freight, so I took a leisurely detour to a small town
called Duchess, AB. This is the town my wife Viola grew up
in for nineteen years. We have two nephews living there
so I parked my big rig in front of Allen’s Variety Store. He
wasn’t there, but we called our other nephew, Kent and
he showed up immediately. He is the superintendent responsible
for all the construction, maintenance of streets,
water, utilities, etc. of the town so he gave me a tour.
After my visit I headed to Winnipeg. I arrived on Thursday
night and was told I would get the rest of the load
on Friday evening so I had a great visit with people at the
Winnipeg terminal all day Friday. On Saturday while coming
through Thunder Bay I called Darryl to see if we could
meet for lunch, but he was busy coaching a hockey team.
So, I continued to Sault Ste. Marie and spent a night at the
Husky Truck Stop before heading home on my last day.
I thanked the Lord everyday that he gave me the health,
the ability and the time to enjoy two wonderful truck trips
this summer from the east coast to almost the west coast.
Thank you to all the people who arranged and scheduled
the deliveries and pickups around my personal plans. I
guess that’s one of the benefits of being the X-President!
I also thank Viola for her support and allowing me to do
what I enjoy so much, even though she said she really
missed me for the weeks I was gone.
Until next time, The Lord Bless,
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
WENDELL ERB
President
This summer I decided to take a truck trip to Thunder Bay for
the annual employee barbeque. My load north was a Walmart
load delivering to Sudbury and Thunder Bay. When I arrived in
Thunder Bay I found the Walmart store just around the corner
from the terminal, but it was a challenge getting into the parking
lot and turned around to back up to the dock.
After the barbeque I headed south with a load of paper for Wisconsin
which delivered the next day. My last load was a load of
Rich’s from Niles, Illinois and then home. Throughout the trip
I used the electronic logs option and had been able to turn off
my truck at night even though during the day the temperatures
were in the 90’s.
My last night was in Michigan and I needed to keep the truck
running for air conditioning. I was just going to sleep when the
satellite started barking “Hours of Service Violation, pull over!”
When I picked up the satellite I noticed I was back in “driving”
mode. I shut the truck off, but could only sleep for about an
hour before the heat was unbearable. I started the truck again
and got yelled at by the satellite continuously until I turned the
truck off. After a poor night of sleep I headed home and found
out the truck had a wiring issue related to the key switch. Other
then that I was very impressed with the E-log and E-inspection
option. I’m not a fan of paperwork or math and these tools
made my trip easier.
In October I took my second trip with the Nascar LoneStar pulling
Scott Steckly’s race car to the SEMA show in Las Vegas. My
E-logs worked perfectly and it was an excellent trip in all aspects.
Cheryl accompanied me and we made a short detour on
Route 66 through Seligman, Arizona (Radiator Springs) looking
for Mack, Mater and all the folks from the movie CARS. We
didn’t find them, but did eat breakfast at the Roadkill Café.
On my trips the ProStar
and the LoneStar
worked flawlessly. Unfortunately,
many of
you are driving relatively
new trucks and they are
Route 66 outside Seligman AZ which is Radiator
Springs in the original CARS movie. I was driving
Mack, Lightning McQueen’s car was in my trailer!
Parked by New York New York hotel
in Las Vegas
breaking down way too frequently.
We are well aware
of the issues and are taking
steps to remove our problematic
trucks from the fleet.
It’s tough enough trying to
make money in the economic
environment we’re in now. We
should be able to count on our
new trucks to operate with the
lowest cost and most reliability
yet this is not the case. Your patience
is greatly appreciated as
we work through these issues.
Some congratulations are in
order. Congrats to Stew Jutzi
for winning the National
Trucking Driving Championship
in the Straight Truck
Class and to Tom Boehler
for being awarded the
Transportation Safety Professional
of the Year by the
Central Ontario Fleet Safety
Council. Robin Seale also deserves a pat on the back. He
is representing Erb International as an Ontario TCA Road
Knight for 2011 and 2012. Robin is a veteran in the industry
and is doing an excellent job representing Erb and the
trucking industry during his term. Congrats gentlemen!
Erb has received the 2011 Waterloo Region Healthy Workplace
Gold Award for our Highway to Health program. Carolyn
Vokes Reibeling is working on next year’s challenge, I
urge everyone to participate and get involved.
A few more awards to mention: In May, Erb was named
one of the 20 “Best Fleets to Drive For” in a contest sponsored
by the Truckload Carriers Association. In February
Erb was also awarded “Store Delivery Carrier of the Year”
for 2010 for the second year in a row for Walmart. Congratulations
everyone on a job well done!
Lastly, Erb International has qualified second in division
IV in the TCA Fleet Safety Award Program for 2011. This
is the same award Erb was named Grand Champion of in
2009. Since 2002, Erb has placed in the top 3 six times in
this competition amongst carriers across North America
who are members of the TCA.
As you can see, we have a lot to be proud of here at Erb.
We achieve our success as a team working together with
common goals of safety and excellent customer service.
The economy is not making our job any easier and some
recent volume losses are forcing us to rethink our strategy
for the future. I have confidence in all of our people that
we will continue to find success and we will adapt and
change to meet our challenges. We will continue to be the
premier carrier in the refrigeration industry. Thank you for
your loyalty and dedication, I wish you all safe travels in
2012.
Wendell

CANADIAN OPERATIONS
KEVIN COOPER
Senior V.P. of Canadian Operations & Finance
I’m sure we’ve all run across (or perhaps used) the following
clichés with my commentary in brackets: To be honest
(you mean you weren’t before), with all due respect
(you are not going to like what I’m going to say next) , exit
strategy (leaving when the plan fails), smart goals (I guess
some goals are not). I am sure you can think of your own
phrases you may like or dislike. Some expressions just
don’t make a lot of sense even though we get the general
idea: Sync-up, social bookmarking, political capital and reverse
fulfillment. Here are my top two ‘winners’: whatever
and it is what it is.
There are some words and expressions however which,
while sometimes overused or not really practised by some
are very important for our business here at Erb’s. These
words represent concepts and ideals which are timeless
and which, if practised consistently throughout any organization,
will produce greatness:
• Reliability – can be counted on to perform
• Service – available to assist you at each step in the
process
• Consistency – Like reliability, customers know what
to expect and count on it
• Speed – responding promptly to requests from customers
is an important part of service
• Security – the customers know that their product is
safe with us
• Ethics – Do what is right and have the customers
and employees best interests in mind in all that
they do
These positive ‘buzzwords’ can be summed up by borrowing
a phrase from our Erb Mission Statement. “Our
commitment is to serve each customer superbly by ‘doing
it right the first time’ – with consistent courtesy, ontime
delivery, and superior support from every member
of our company.” If you have not read the Mission Statement
lately it’s on our website www.erbgroup.com/mission_statement.asp.
Thanks for what each of you do to
service our customer. In servicing our customer we will all
reach our goals.
In other news we now have our own location in Quebec
City. After sharing dock space and parking with another
Executive Updates ‹‹
carrier who owned the space
one of our alert drivers in
Quebec City spotted some
warehouse space for lease.
We now have four dock doors,
chilled loading area and a
freezer. This additional space
will allow us to take advantage
of the business we know is available in
the Quebec City area where we didn’t have the space
before and couldn’t expand.
One of the areas we will be focusing on in 2012 will be
customer service, particularly in the areas of information.
For many of our customers information is almost
as important as delivering the product. They have told
us what they need so we will be emphasizing and developing
a better model for alerting the customers when
shipments are delayed, appointments not met or exceptions
to clear delivery.
The other focus for 2012 will be connecting with our
employees. We know we have the most dedicated,
talented group of employees in the trucking business.
These are people with ideas, observations and knowledge
which we need to tap into. Our employees see
things I won’t simply because one person cannot be in
all places. I plan on spending more time this year trying
to tap into that great resource.
To use a couple of clichés ‘without a doubt’ we will be
challenged in 2012 but ‘needless to say’ with all the
efforts of our employees it will be a successful year.
Thanks again for all you do.
Kevin
INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS
BRUCE JANTZI
Senior V.P. of International Operations
Another year… where has the time gone? Christmas is less
than a month away and I can hardly wait to spend time with
my grandchildren to see their glowing faces and the abundance
of energy. This year has gone by so fast and as always,
there is always a lot happening. Isn’t there some way we could
tap into their energy source?
For me, this summer seems to be a blur. Being involved in the
K-DAC dispatch system changes has proved to be more extensive
than I ever imagined. We have a very good dispatch system
that captures a lot of important data. When we hire one
new person it can take months of training, but when you try to
train eight dispatch people at the same time, it becomes very
cumbersome and time consuming. The next time you see me
I may be a little greyer with a little less hair, and of course it’s
certainly not from getting older.
I had no idea how many things can be affected by not having
the correct information entered on a pick up or a truckload
movement. Everyone worked diligently to learn a new system
and less than 60 days later we have seen the effects of our
dispatch errors in the billing system. This is where things can
become very complicated and very time consuming. Trying to
retrace moves and depend on people’s memories to try and
correct the errors is difficult. We went through some pain, but
I’m sure we will all see the benefits in the future.
With this experience I realized how, we as people, take things
for granted at work and in our personal lives. The world is such
a busy place that we don’t take the time to actually think of
what the end result will be. If we don’t do the job properly
today or look after our body and mind today, what will we deal
with tomorrow, or a week from now, or a year from now? Do
we ever take time to think of these things?
2011 has been a very busy year for Erb International, certainly
much busier than 2009 and 2010 and since August 2010 we
have stayed extremely busy. The trailer load volume southbound
to the USA is up approximately 20 to 30% over 2010,
a very good sign that the economy is in recovery mode. With
the LTL to the U.S.A. increasing as the year progressed, most
weeks we saw 800,000 to 900,000 lbs of LTL shipments southbound.
As a matter of fact, in the first week of November, Erb
International had 59 LTL loads with 1.3 million lbs of product to
the USA. This is one of the heaviest weeks of LTL shipping that I
can recall in the history of Erb International! Hopefully another
good sign that the economy is in recovery mode.
This year we have been involved with many RFQ’s (request for
quotation) from our customers. This seems to be the new normal
with the larger customers. They’re trying to keep freight
costs as low as possible and of course they are under price
pressure from us, the consumers.
Erb Transportation Solutions
has also been quite busy this
summer, seeing more activity
from Tim Horton’s and Martin
Brower deliveries than in
previous years. Wayne has
also been involved in quite a
few RFQ’s for hospital meal
services. These are very time
consuming because the large
amount of detail they require.
What will 2012 bring? I think we will see much of the
same as 2011. In reading some of the articles in U.S. magazines
there seems to be a shortage of trucks south of the
border which should, in turn, mean that they won’t be as
competitive on cross border moves.
I would like to welcome all of our new employees and
owner operators, I am confident that your experience at
Erb will be as good as mine has been for the last 30+ years.
The team of people that we have in place at Erb International,
Erb Transportation Solutions and at K-DAC are
a very dedicated group and do an excellent job, even
on those days when not everything comes together as
planned. Erb is very fortunate to have such a committed
group of people. They provide our customers with number
one service which is why Erb is the best refrigerated
carrier in the business.
This fall at a conference I had the opportunity to hear Frank
O’Dea speak about his life. He had a very interesting story
to tell about how, at a very young age he ended up on skid
row and went on to become the CEO of Second Cup Coffee
Stores. One of the things that Frank talked about was
HOPE, VISION, ACTION…..which really stuck with me and
how much truth it holds. We have hope, we have a vision
and the only way to make things happen is to take Action.
We can change things one small step at a time.
“Success doesn’t come from being perfect the first time
you try something new, it comes from making the necessary
adjustments along the way.”
K-DAC OPERATIONS
BRUCE SCHUMM
K-DAC General Manager
It‘s hard to believe the year 2011 is almost history. Where
did it go?
At K-DAC we were kept busy switching to the Erb Solomon
system. There is a lot to learn and I’m sure we will
continue to learn more. As we’re getting more integrated
we continue to look where we can improve and work together
with our Erb team members.
We at K-DAC would like to wish each of you and your families
a very Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous new
year. Remember, at Christmas giving to the less fortunate
CORPORATE FLEET & SHOP
STEVE HAUS
Corporate Fleet Manager
As another year is quickly winding down, we stop for a brief
moment to ponder the past. It has been, without a doubt,
one of the most challenging and definitely the most frustrating
times in the 40+ years I have been involved in this industry.
On-going parts shortages and availability, dealer’s inability
to deal with required repairs and the overall frustration of
dealing with unreliable equipment has been overwhelming
at times. In meeting with folks from other companies from
across North America the complaints are the same. These issues
are not restricted to one name plate or one engine supplier,
but rather it has become an industry-wide phenomenon.
On a daily basis it presents far more questions than answers
to those of us with this monumental responsibility of keeping
equipment running.
Recently I attended a meeting in Chicago and after several
complaints from industry reps over the complexity and reliability
issues with the equipment being built today, one of the
OE (Original Equipment) reps made the comment “We have
made these things so complicated that even the dealer networks
cannot figure them out.” Stay tuned for, hopefully, positive
moves from all of the OE’s.
this time of year special.
If 2012 goes by as fast as
2011 then I hope each of
you gets a pair of roller
skates for Christmas!
Executive Updates ‹‹
I once again would like to
commend and thank our
driver population for your
patience and understanding
as we work through
many of these issues. I
personally have worked
with many of you over
the past couple of years and have experienced your
frustrations as we are concerned with late deliveries and
upset customers. I believe that working together and
staying cool we will get ‘ err done! I want to pass on the
compliments I have received time and time again from
many of the dealers we have visited regarding the professionalism,
knowledge and patience displayed when confronted
with issues. Congratulations and thank you.
From all of the shop personnel to all of you, we wish you
and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
VIC THIESSEN
V.P. of Information Technology
It is quite remarkable that 2011 is almost over. Where has
the time gone? The older I get, the faster time seems to
go by! Here are some of the notable IT events since the
spring Erban Report.
A new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software
system was purchased in September to replace the
GroupForce CRM software. This software is designed to
store and report on the non-billing and non-dispatching
information that is exchanged between Erb and our customers.
The current primary users of the CRM software
are the Customer Account Managers who document
their communications / visits with their respective customers.
It is our intention to bring this CRM software into
Erb operations in early 2012, to help capture their operational
related interactions with customers. The CRM software
will eventually, in some sense, serve as the central
“library” for all relevant relationship information with our
customers.
Though over time email has become the preferred
method for business (and personal) communication, the
telephone still remains a vital component of the overall
communications program here at Erb. Since May 2011,
we have upgraded the telephone systems for the following
terminals: Montreal, Ottawa, Trenton, Mississauga,
Baden and New Hamburg. From time to time, we are
asked whether Erb will be implementing VoIP (voice over
internet protocol). VoIP is the technology where both
voice (telephone) and data (internet) share the same
data communication cable. Erb does currently utilize VoIP
between Baden and New Hamburg. And as opportunities
present themselves to do further VoIP implementation
with other terminals, Erb will take advantage of this cost
saving technology.
Erb developers have written a software program to warn
dispatch when freight with delivery appointments may
be late or missed leaving the terminal. This software is
being rolled out to each terminal. We recently received
an affirming email from Trenton terminal:
Good morning guys...just to let you know, this system
saved our butts yesterday. It alerted us that there was a
load sitting here not dispatched for delivery. We did end
up getting the 3 drop delivery load moving and delivered,
but I guarantee that the load would have been missed if it
weren’t for this new system.
Thanks, Ron
It’s always rewarding for developers
to receive feedback how
their programs are making a
positive difference for Erb :)
Solomon and Esther are the
names of the two primary
servers for Erb Group. Solomon
is the production server
and Esther is the backup server (should a
major failure occur to Solomon). Upgrades to both Solomon
and Esther are planned for January 2012. These upgrades
will result in faster processing speeds and greater
disk storage capacity for future growth.
Recent IT Staff changes include the departure of Will Ridder
(Application Developer) and the arrival of Toni Mladineo
(Application Developer) and Laura Metcalfe (Help
Desk). Welcome Toni and Laura to the Erb IT team.
On behalf of the IT team, I wish everyone in Erbland, including
your families and loved ones, a blessed Christmas
season (which is just around the corner!) and all the
best for 2012.
HUMAN RESOURCES
DAVE DIETRICH
V.P. of Human Resources
As Vice-President of Human Resources, I have a number of responsibilities
relating to – you guessed it – the human resources or employees
of the Erb Group of Companies. These include areas such
as recruiting / hiring, training, compensation and benefits, insurance,
safety, employment law and employee policies. However,
none of these are as important as ensuring that Erb Transport is
the best employer to work with. This is something Vernon Erb has
always felt very strongly about and as such I take this responsibility
very seriously.
I am sure most of you are aware of the Erb mission statement –
“Service, Satisfaction, Success”. The way I have always interpreted
this is: service our customers to the best of our ability which will
lead to satisfied customers which will lead to our joint (e.g. customers,
employees, company) success. However, at our recent Terminal
/ Account Manager meeting, I reviewed the mission statement
and mentioned that perhaps we should switch the order of the first
two words – “Satisfaction, Service, Success”. In other words, have
satisfied, happy team members which will lead to excellent customer
service which will lead to our joint success.
I have had the opportunity and pleasure to participate recently in
employee meetings at our Mississauga, Vaudreuil and Winnipeg
terminals. I want to thank everyone for their frank and honest
feedback. The comments we heard at these meetings were somewhat
shocking. I and the other members of our management team
are very disappointed in ourselves that this situation has occurred.
In order to make Erb Transport an employer of choice once again,
we have listened to your concerns and have created an action plan
Executive Updates ‹‹
First, we are committed to listen
to all of you. You are the front
line of our workforce and all have
great ideas. Therefore, we have
rejuvenated our employee suggestion
program and commit that
all reasonable suggestions will be considered, responded to
and implemented, wherever possible. Also, we intend to hold
more employee meetings with senior management to listen
to your comments, ideas and concerns and jointly develop
solutions to improve.
We will continue to do our best to keep you informed about
what is going on here at Erb Transport, at your terminal and
within your department. This will be accomplished through
our new “ErbVision” TV monitors at the terminals, the Erban
Report, Wendell’s monthly updates, employee meetings, etc.
However, part of effective communication is that it is twoway.
Therefore, it is also your responsibility to communicate
with department, terminal and senior management with your
thoughts, issues, ideas, etc.
In order to properly execute our strategic plan, everyone
needs to be aware of our goals and objectives. Therefore, it
is our plan to communicate our strategy to all team members
and to let you know how you can assist in achieving our goals
through your role in the company.
We are proud of our Employee Representatives to Management
Committee and the excellent job that all of our representatives
do in representing the employees. Therefore, we
are going to work with your local committee to improve its
effectiveness, work fairly and equally with local management
to resolve grievances and communicate the results and accomplishments
of the committee to our local team.
Finally, I recall the lessons that Vernon Erb taught us right
from the early days of founding Erb Transport. It was his goal,
both in dealing with employees and customers, to treat them
properly, fairly and respectfully, just as he would like to be
treated – “The Golden Rule”. We all need to work harder on
treating employees the way we wish to be treated – with respect.
You have my personal commitment that we are going to work
diligently, together as a team, to make Erb Transport the best
employer to work with. In the mean time, if you have any
comments, questions, suggestions, etc., please feel free to
contact any of the senior management team, either by phone
or email. Thanks for your continued contributions, loyalty
and commitment. The Erb Group of Companies has the best
team of employees in the industry!
SALES & SERVICE
JOHN JUTZI
V.P. of Canadian and U.S. Sales
Service, Satisfaction, Success
Fall in all its beauty has arrived for our enjoyment which also
means a time for us in Canada and the US to reflect on the
many things for which we can be thankful, nationally the one
day we set apart as nations. But also remembering that every
day should be a day where we can give thanks for a variety of
things.
“Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest
man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will
allow.” – Edward Sandford Martin, American writer.
We just completed our fall Sales and Terminal Manager’s meeting,
which is a great venue to share corporate happenings and
also hear the perspective of sales and operations. One of our
goals continues to be the best provider of temperature control
services for warehousing, transportation and information
to our customers in the food supply chain industry. We want
our customers to enjoy the Erb experience. The theme for this
gathering was continuing our team work in the midst of rapid
and varied changes occurring in the supply chain and in society
in general. Specifically how we deal with change at the Erb
Group as we move into 2012.
I want to highlight some of the changing trends for Erb Transport
Limited. One area includes the shrinkage in the direct
store distribution and less than truckload (LTL) volumes as
food producers and distributors find new means to get their
products to the stores. One big area of this loss is in customer
pick up, where the chain stores and food service companies
take more control of their freight right from the shippers’
premises, handling it through their own distribution centers
and delivering to their stores. Chain store policies regarding
receiving practices continue to include more visibility for their
product at any given time. Vendor compliance issues escalate
with the chain stores and food service distributors. The key
for us in this area is to notify our customers, shippers and/
or receivers when we are unable to maintain a scheduled appointment
time. New service companies are offering a variety
of options; non-competitors are supplying each other services
that traditionally were done by temperature control carriers.
Customers themselves are selling less in certain segments of
the industry. Recruitment and retention of professional drivers
in our industry is of vital interest to the trucking industry.
We are thankful for our overall low driver turnover ratio. Security
and other regulatory government programs continue.
In 2012 we must be very vigilant in responding to some of the
changes described above. We have a large specialized infra-
structure necessitating quick
reaction to changes that impact
our industry. An examination
of how we do business,
in all sectors, is becoming more
important than ever.
I want to quickly move on to
share some real positive occurrences.
We have the best team of associates in the transportation
business in all areas of the company. A large portion
of our customers are remaining very faithful to Erb Group.
Our customers understand, for the most part, the compensation
that we need to assess in order to provide the services
that are required. We also know that our customers
are under great pressure from the companies with whom
they do business to reduce the cost of the products. What
a pleasure to hear the customer comments about our services.
When accompanying our professional Account Managers
on visits or by myself, it is great to hear their positive
comments. Team, keep up the good work. Our customers
often tell us they don’t know how we achieve the success
we do, performing overnight service in the time window
that we have for handling most DSD and LTL shipments. The
area we perform this service encompasses southern ON,
eastern ON, the near north, along with Montréal.
We are excited about the move in Québec City to a temperature
control facility allowing us to better serve our customers
in this area. To help us in customer development we are
pleased to have Rejean Vennes join our sales team as Quebec
City Account Manager. Rejean Vennes was the owner of
Rejean Vennes Transport which was our interline carrier for
many years in Québec City at the old facility that we used.
One major change for Erb Transport Limited is moving to
a full truckload fuel surcharge from our blended fuel surcharge,
for full truckload moves. This move is needed to
compensate fuel cost increases that aren’t being covered by
our blended fuel surcharge.
Another positive is the increased volumes that Erb International
continues to see in 2011. Both LTL and julieTL volumes
for western Canada and cross border have increased
over 2010. We believe that this trend should continue as
we move into 2012. Shippers continue to use the “Request
for Pricing” method to benchmark and establish prices for
the movement of their volume. The pace of these requests
slowed somewhat in 2011, but these requests will continue
into 2012. This method for deterring carrier selection by
shippers does provide somewhat of a level playing for us
carriers when quoting prices.

SALES & SERVICE
Erb Transportation Solutions, K-DAC, Erb Cold Storage, Erb
Logistics and Erb Transport Inc in Elverson continue to play
a vital role in the service offerings that we can provide our
customers.
In conclusion, thanks to each of you for your positive contribution
and effort. This continues to make the Erb Group
of Companies a great food transportation and warehousing
service provider. This journey that we are on continues to be
exciting and ever changing. By God’s grace we are thankful
for the positives and will meet the challenges ahead resulting
in being a stronger team.
All the best to you and your families for 2012 and by the way,
allow me to close with this poem:
Hi everyone; happy winter!
A lot has been happening in the communications department
since our last Erban Report. The most obvious is the
TV’s in our driver rooms. Yes, the future is here! May I formally
introduce to you “ErbVision” (Thank you to John
O’Malley for coming up with the name!). These TV’s have
been installed to improve communications while reducing
the amount of postings/mailings throughout our terminals.
Whatever you found on a driver newsletter or internal communication,
can now be found on ErbVision. The TV’s will be
used to welcome new employees, post company announcements,
to showcase job postings, display safety videos, show
local news feeds, etc. These TV’s
aren’t just for drivers either; everyone
at Erb can find material
that applies to them. If you have
something to post that others at
Erb may find interesting please
let me know.
So far seven out of the nine systems
have been installed and
hopefully by the time you’re
reading this all will be up and
running. Tom Boehler has been
busy travelling around Ontario
and Quebec installing the TV’s
and their players, but our friends
in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg
are still patiently waiting for
Thank you to everyone for your
patience with the new system, it
has been quite the learning experience
and I know we aren’t done yet.
Hopefully by the next Erban Report
all the kinks will be worked out.
Also in the works is an update for our external website
(www.erbgroup.com). The new website will be easier to
navigate and geared towards external users (current and
potential customers), meaning anything employee related
will be found on the internal website only. Also, it will be
prettier! Most of the design work is done, but navigation
and copy still needs to be completed. My hope is by February
it will be launched. Stay tuned!
Calendars are also circulating throughout Erb. I would like
to thank Bob Stewart, Baden Owner Operator, for sending
me his amazing photo of his truck at a rest area in Oregon. I
encourage everyone to send me your photos because who
knows, yours could be the one on the 2013 calendar, the
cover of the next Erban Report, or in our newest recruitment
advertising!
I would also like to thank all the Erban Reporters, Erban
Profilers and everyone who sent in messages, stories, pictures,
etc. Without your help, this report would be pretty
boring and only a few pages instead of the 40 it is!
To you and yours, have a wonderful holiday season!
in the morning. A fellow came and offered
to help me. I didn’t know him,
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...
O.S. & D.
Zach Litwinenko is an O.S.&D. Coordinator at our Mississauga Terminal.
He started at Erb in 2003 as part of the dock team. In 2007,
he was promoted to his present position. He has agreed to share
with us what a typical day is like in the Overages, Shortages & Damages
department.
I start off my day at 6:00 a.m. by notifying the shippers and our ‘billto’
accounts of all delivery discrepancies from the previous day. For
each occurrence, an email or fax is sent detailing the situation of
the OS&D (Overages, Shortages and Damages) followed by the ‘delivery’
POD (Proof of Delivery). If direction for Erb is needed, authorization
is also requested. Reships, no deliveries, store closures
and missed appointments are first on the list. Many other issues
such as, refusals, partial returns, short code dates, overages, shortages,
damages, tipped loads, temperature issues, wrong delivery
addresses, routing errors, invalid PO’s or PO extension requests
take place. The OSD department creates a “hit-list” each day. I average
about 50 OS&D’s every day. Each issue is addressed and then
crossed off of the list. This is to ensure that each OS&D has been
reported. We also have an “open OS&D” list within Solomon from
previous shipments that either have not been resolved or are still
awaiting authorization. This list is to ensure that the open OS&D’s
are re-visited and followed up on.
Once the list is done, any shippers/bill to accounts of ‘held loads’
and/or ‘late freight’ orders held at the terminal due to late shipping
or late picks are then notified of the occurrence and the process
being implemented. The ‘short on loading’ sheets from the midnight
shift are then entered and OS&D’s are put onto the “bills-no
product” which are orders the dock can not find. Everything left
on the dock is recorded once the delivery trucks have left for the
day. This product is cross referenced with Solomon to determine
delivery destination, date and time. Missed orders are addressed
and either a new bill is requested from the shipper or an Erb Bill
of Lading (BOL) is created in an attempt to deliver it the same day.
The new ‘hit list’ is started and the daily shipper discrepancy faxes
are filled out and sent by appropriate times. As OS&D’s are called
in, any coinciding with these faxes are updated. In the mean time,
dedicated customer POD’s from the
night before, or over the weekend and
OS&D numbers are assigned. Depending
on the issue, dedicated customer
incident numbers are requested for billing
purposes.
Our department also handles things
like, billing extra charges on orders
with regards to delivery waiting times,
delayed delivery appointments, held
freight, re-delivery fees, reships and redirected
orders. We search for missing
paperwork, obtain missing pages from
loads delivered, acquire BDR’s (Back
Door Report) not given to Erb and send
out requests for signature. COD (Cash on Delivery) freight
charges are also applied. Erb Bill of Ladings are created and
keyed into the system to move freight for any authorizations
given by the shipper. This includes orders being returned to
plant, reshipped to customer, redirected to a new delivery
address, missed products being reshipped to cover a short
or being matched to its original bill and all products being
sent for disposal. Return “pick up request” bills are made up
for all orders that shippers require to be picked up from their
customer and returned to them.
At any time during the day a customer or driver will call in
with an issue which then takes precedence over whatever
else is being handled at that time. Drivers are required to call
in all of their OS&D’s. They also call in for any COD related
problems, directions, wrong delivery addresses, long wait
times or line ups, small receiving areas or any problems with
their deliveries in general.
Customers calling into the OSD department wish to track
and trace their orders, request a delivery time or ETA’s, want
a POD, a delivery schedule, or appointment due dates and
times. They may also request a special delivery time or an
early delivery time. Shippers call in about their OS&D’s, request
more information, give authorization or redirection.
They may be also looking for lost orders or product shipped
with no paperwork, any labeling issues, asking for placards
to be placed or file a claim. While most issues are current,
there may be issues from previous weeks or months. This
requires all OS&D’s to be updated with information as it is
happening so there is no guess work involved when being
re-assessed in the future to determine responsibility.
The main obstacle I face, aside from dealing with unhappy
customers, is the daily peak times when everyone seems to
call in at the same time - upwards of 15 to 20 calls in a row.
We have to determine priorities of handling each instance
without causing an upset customer and attempt to resolve
each issue before the next wave of calls happen. It can be
frustrating at times, especially within the flow of calls, the
person who called you first has called you back to check on
your progress!
The OS&D department needs to identify the issue, report it
and resolve it in a timely fashion. Having a good memory,
patience, organizational skills, time management and the
ability to multi-task is a must. Everyday in OS&D is interesting
because there is always something old and something
new. We deal with multiple instances from yesterday, today
and tomorrow. And yes, while most of these instances are
negative, that’s what OS&D is. It can be demanding and
a stressful environment at times and Murphy’s Law never
seems to let us down, but at the end of the day a job well
done is still a job well done!
NEW HAMBURG OFFICE
HEAD OFFICE HAPPENINGS
Summer is behind us and the colorful days of fall have turned into
the gray days of November. We are gearing up for the cold, busy
winter months ahead and all the fun-filled festivities for the Christmas
season.
Summertime at Head Office is always a fun time. It begins and
ends with summer vacations, summer students and summertime
treats. We enjoy our Canada Day Pot Luck lunch, standing proud in
our Canada flag attire and plenty of great food. The company BBQ
in August is overflowing with wonderful food, outstanding organization
and great company throughout the two-day event. A big
thank you goes out to the organizers and to all the volunteers who
helped make the BBQ a success.
In May we kicked our soles and bodies into motion with the start
of the “Soles In Motion” fitness challenge. When we signed up for
the challenge we were given our very own Erb pedometer so we
could keep track of every step we took for the next 12 weeks. We
converted our activities into steps as well and charted them each
day. What a gratifying experience and lots of fun too because we
not only challenged ourselves, we challenged other teams as well.
We look forward to what might come next to keep our “soles in
motion”.
Are we true Canadians at head office or what eh? Jerry Fitzgerald,
in the IT department, brought in his version of the Stanley Cup in
anticipation of Vancouver Canucks taking it home with them at the
final game on June 15th! Sorry Jerry, your
team didn’t win, but we felt like champs
for the day with that impressive replica of
the Stanley Cup! Congratulations to the
Boston Bruins.
On a warm sunny day in August a little girl
named Olivia Salese, whose Grandmother
lives across the street from our office, decided
she wanted to raise money for the
Cancer Society. She was so excited to assemble
a “Lemonade stand” complete
with homemade lemonade, balloons and some of her friends to
sell ice cold lemonade to passers by. Many of us took a walk over
to enjoy a cool glass and contribute to the cause. She raised $275,
great job Olivia! Your Grandparents, Mike Wirth, who drives for
Erb, and Karen Wirth, who works in
the Accounts Payable department,
must be very proud of you.
Page 18
Congratulations go out to a few of
our co-workers. In July, Diane Heyer,
IT department, celebrated her 25
year anniversary with Erb and in Sep-
tember, Vic Thiessen,
V.P. of IT, celebrated
his 30 year
anniversary. Sharon Kienapple, Accounts
Receivable Supervisor, and Tom Broda, Safety,
Accidents and Facility Manager, both celebrated their 25 year
anniversary with Erb in October. Way to go everyone…what
a great achievement! On September 10th, Amy Bowman, in
the Document Control department, married Dan Poll. We
wish them all the best.
Thanksgiving at Head Office is a time of collecting food for our
local food bank and giving to the less fortunate in our community.
This year we decided to add some fun festivities to
raise funds for the food bank as
well. We brought in our famous
baked goods and hosted a bake
sale where we raised $467.00!
It was a fun-filled day of sharing
our famous treats!! Thanks
to everyone who had a part in
making this day a huge success.
On Halloween we continued
with the food collection theme. The “trick” was if you didn’t
dress up you had to bring in “treats” for the food bank. There
was a good assortment of both costumes and food donations
and some people did both.
The IT department welcomed two new people, Laura Metcalfe
on the Help Desk and Toni Mladineo who filled the desk
in the application developer area, left open by William Ridder.
The Document Control department endured a few growing
pains and
adjustments.
BADEN TERMINAL
We have all settled into the Fall/Winter season and have begun
our preparations for the Christmas holiday festivities. Here are
a few of the highlights from the summer that passed way too
quickly.
The Annual Erb Employee
BBQ was enjoyed by many
Jodi Trachsel, Roxanne Jantzi and
Jessica Wagler fighting off the bugs!
of the employees, their families
and the neighbours here at
Erb Baden. There are so many
people to thank for volunteering
their time and their hard work to
pull this event off. We enjoyed delicious
food, fellowship and beautiful
weather.
Doug
Holst
found
some
Team Grill Vic Thiessen, Jamie Sullivan,
Randy Steckly and Wayne Stock
Retirees Wayne Leis and Floyd
Gerber came to help out
unwanted guests in his truck… a
few thousand actually! A swarm
of honey bees decided they wanted
to hang out in his shunt truck!
Tim Rabak made a few calls and
Pfenning Organic Farms came to the rescue and removed the
bees. He told Tim to get in there to
help but he couldn’t seem to move
his feet!
In July, a television commercial was
filmed in the parking lot of the Baden
Terminal. Memory Tree Productions,
a Kitchener based company filmed a
commercial for their client, Verizon/
Blackberry; they used Erb Tractor 200437. They shot scenes in
the yard and in the wash bay. The commercial will be aired on
US networks, watch for more details as to when we can all see
it.
In August the employees
of the
Baden terminal
were a little “shaken up”.
We could feel the earthquake on August 23 around
1:50pm which measured 5.9 on the Richter Scale and was
centered in Virginia.
This Fall we said see ya later to Katherine Henke (US Driver
Payroll) as she is on maternity leave. We welcomed back
a familiar face - Denise DeJonge.
You will hear her on the Baden
switchboard as well as in US
Driver Payroll covering Katherine’s
maternity leave.
We will soon say goodbye to
Richard Roth who will be retiring
on December 9. Richard first
started working at Erb in 1973. Richard held a variety of
positions at Erb including: Night Rounds Driver, Dispatcher,
Traffic Manager, V.P. of Operations, International Driver,
and Logistics Coordinator. Richard will be missed by everyone,
especially by the upstairs Logistics Department and
those who work around him. We will surely miss the laughs
he always seems to be the centre of.
A few celebrations to mention at the Baden Terminal:
Congratulations to Lisa and Myles Adkins on the arrival
of their baby boy – Brayden George Adkins on January 8,
2011. Lisa works in the Baden Cold Storage office. Sorry we
missed Brayden in the last edition.
Congratulations to Christopher and Lorri McIntyre on the
arrival of their baby boy – Isaac Judah Christopher Mc-
Intyre on September 11, 2011. Chris works in LTL Dispatch.
Congratulations also to Katherine Henke and Jared Wagler
on the arrival of their baby boy – Eli Henke-Wagler on November
7, 2011. Katherine works in US Driver Payroll. There
are also a few more new babies welcomed on the Good
Cheer page! Congrats!
That’s it for now, have a wonderful holiday season and we
will talk again in the Spring.
Jessica Wagler

TORONTO TERMINAL
Here we are again!! It’s hard to believe that the mad dash of the
holidays and Mother Nature’s wrath is just about upon us. Yikes!
There have been some pretty big changes here in the Mississauga
terminal. As I’m sure most of you know, we have had the good
fortune of an installation of a brand new fuel island. It certainly
was quite the undertaking over the summer and just when we
thought it was almost over, we came to work the next morning,
to a brand new giant hole
somewhere else in the yard
or parking lot. But, ultimately,
it was completed much to
everyone’s relief. We would
like to thank everyone for
“BEFORE”
The first fueling! Driver Carlos Mejia
their patience during the con-
“AFTER”
struction, especially the folks
on the dock, in the yard and the drivers for their cooperation with
the changes in operation that were continually happening during
the construction.
Recently I was thinking that sometimes when life gets busy and
we are just trying to get through the day successfully, we may forget
to show our thanks and appreciation for some of the things
that people do. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank
you to a few of the people:
On August 19, 2011 we had our annual employee appreciation
BBQ here at the Mississauga terminal. There was a ton of great
food, fantastic weather and as always, wonderful company! We
also had some of the ladies here from the Erb store selling Erb
gear. This BBQ would
not be possible without
the hard work and
organization of the
people that plan it and
make it happen, so I
would like to say thank
you to all those that
helped out from all
of us who enjoyed the
day.
A big thank you
also goes out to
all the drivers
that have helped with Saturday
work over the last few months. Your dedication
is very much appreciated! From Driver Services
We would also like to thank everyone involved in setting
up the new television in the downstairs break room. I’m
sure folks are glad to be able to
watch something other than static
while enjoying their breaks/lunch.
In September we said goodbye to
Donna Dahmer who had been with
Erb for almost 19 years. We wish
her well in her new adventures!!
Congratulations to Troy Donald
and Myra Reid for receiving Superb
awards this fall! Troy and Myra were both recognized for
their excellent customer service.
Since we are
coming to a time
of year when we
realize how important
family
is, I would like
to congratulate
the following
Erb employees
on the expansion
of their families: Raquel Sasot and husband Mark
welcomed a baby girl Alexis, Mike Sprague and his wife
Nancy welcomed baby boy Lucas, Paul Rashleigh and Liz
Davies welcomed baby girl Ella and Terry Woody and Pat
Walsh both became Grandpas! It is very difficult for me
to be aware of everyone that may have welcomed a new
addition so to anyone that I may have left out, congratulations
to you also!!
In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to wish
everyone a safe and happy holiday season. I hope you all
enjoy some time with your family and loved ones.
THUNDER BAY TERMINAL
Page 22
Hello everyone in Erbland! We hope everyone enjoyed the summer
months. It took a while for summer to arrive here in Thunder
Bay, but once it got going, it was absolutely wonderful and
it’s carried right on into the fall, today’s temperature (Nov 24) is
12 degrees!
We had a dusting of snow
last weekend which was
perfect and got everybody
in the spirit for the Annual
Santa Claus Parade. Once
again the fine fellows from
A.C.T. decorated the float
that carried Santa and Mrs. Claus and Dave Tinkler donated his
time and truck to pull the float. Thank you Dave! We had no
complaints from Santa about the ride so you must be on his
“Good List”! December 3 is the Parade of Lights in support of
local children’s charities. The A.C.T. fellows will volunteer their
time and talent to decorate an Erb truck and trailer for the parade
(good thing these guys are retired!) This year Darcy Nygard
has volunteered to collect donations and drive in the parade.
Jamie MacIssac &
daughter Sarah
On a nice sunny day in July we had our
BBQ. Wendell and Kevin joined us for the
festivities and everyone enjoyed the tasty
food cooked up by our own “Hollywood”
Cameron (Bobby Cameron’s offspring).
Back in June we had our 9th Annual
Golf Tournament and again this year it
was a smashing success. Our winners
were the Father/Offspring team of Rick
Hordy and his son Scott along with Jamie
MacIsaac and his daughter Sarah.
It’s hard to believe, but next June will
be our 10th
tournament!
Sign up early,
it’s sure to be
extraordinary!
In August Jamie Sullivan made his first trip up to Thunder Bay to
visit and share his expertise with us.
Mike “Hollywood” Cameron
Dennis Hartog
Kelly Smith, Dave Tinkler, John Kuznak & Al Beaven
Best wishes go
out to Ross Storey
who has been
off since September
with some medical
issues. We sure miss
him, but he says he’s
on the mend and we
hope to have him
back up and running
in the New Year. Poor
Charlie the Wonder
Dog, he must be
bored staying home Wendell, Gerry & Kevin at the BBQ
all this time, not to
mention Ross’ wife having to put up with him everyday!
Darryl & Rhonda Erb
Darryl’s Aunt and Uncle, Ed
and Marj Erb were in town
and joined the celebration.
A small celebration was held
in October to mark Darryl
Erb’s 25th Anniversary with
Erb Transport. To make the
event even more special,
Ed & Marj Erb
The list of “Available Men” got smaller in October when
Justin Kilborn said “I Do” to his sweetheart Pam. Congratulations
from all of us!
Plans are underway for a Festive Evening of Bocce Ball and
this year we’re going to raise money for our local Breast
Cancer Clinic. We played Bocce Ball last December and
found out if we don’t play at least once a year, we forget
how to play. So here’s hoping someone remembers all the
darn rules!
We welcome Brad Wark to our family in Thunder Bay. Brad
does local highway work, mostly between here and Winnipeg.
We hope everyone enjoys the winter months ahead.
Happy Holidays and Drive Safe!
OTTAWA TERMINAL
Hello again from Ottawa!
This is the third time I have sat down and tried to write my
report, I guess third time’s a charm! Here we go!
Let’s start by welcoming some new faces here in the Capital.
Redha (I’m not a cook, I’m a chef) Saleh and Bob (I
need a tow) Stinson were added to the straight truck driver
pool. We welcome Alain Bérubé, our new Walmart driver
stationed out of Ottawa. On the dock, we’ve added Brad
White and Jake King to our team. Even the office has gotten
a breath of fresh air with the addition of Denise Turner
as our evening shift dispatcher. Denise joins husband Steve
(I’m the better half) Crawley and son, Brandon Turner who
are both Erb employees in Ottawa.
I would like to welcome Jazmyn Riley
Furlotte in this wonderful world. She
was born on September 5, 2011 (labour
day) @ 3:45 am. Thank you Lesli for
the birth of Jazmyn
and now Callie is a
big sister! Big thanks
for the support from
the Erb family and
my colleagues . Lesli
and I are so grateful for our new home
in Edwards, ON (Ottawa south), thank
you all so much. One more thing, I love
you dad, get well soon.
She makes a lot of the same
faces Barry Jordan makes
Kevin Furlotte Jr
throughout the day!
WINNIPEG TERMINAL
Hello from Winnipeg! Not too much new happening, but
here are a few tidbits:
This fall the annual World’s Largest Truck Convoy for the
Special Olympics was held yet again. The convoy was the
best yet with double the trucks
and double the amount of money
raised. Two of our drivers,
Doug Hixt and Roberto Pereira
participated in the convoy, way
to go!
David Pond recieving his Fun
In The Sun prize from Maury
Altomare. Enjoy!
Some congratulations are also in
order. We would like to congratulate
Jim Shawara with his new
position as Dock Supervisor and
News from our Terminals ‹‹
This summer was
a strange one for
us. We were either
swamped or very
slow, we couldn’t find the happy medium.
Our two flower companies are getting bigger every
day and are keeping us very busy. We have a minimum of 12
dedicated runs a week, just with flowers. Our LTL number
fluctuates quite a bit and some days we can’t keep up. If
we could somehow figure out how to balance the week, we
would be in great shape.
I had the honour this summer to meet a couple of my fellow
OS&D co-workers, Kim Joly from Trenton invited us to her
place for a weekend. Nadia Garhy and I made the trek down
to Trenton. After years of talking on the phone with these
wonderful people, it was sure great to put faces to the voices.
I sure hope we can do it again with even more people being
able to make it down.
Sorry if I don’t have a lot to say, we need some kind of excitement
here. Someone should organize a golf tournament or
something.
Everyone be safe this holiday season and enjoy your families.
Marc Lamarche
also to Tim Brubacher
and his wife Heidi on
their new home in
Stonewall, MB. We would also
like to welcome all new hires since the last Erban
Mathew Klywak, Gaston Topfer, Trevor Marchenski, Tyler Altomare
and Dillan Lavallee.
Maury Altomare is still looking for some winter touch up
paint for his Challenger. Keep looking Maury, it’s out there,
I’m sure you will find it! : )
That’s it for now, have a wonderful winter!
TRENTON TERMINAL
Hello Everyone! Wow, that was a fast six months! It seems
like only yesterday we were filling the pool. Oh well, I
was tired of yard work anyway.
Grill master Al McInroy
comed some familiar faces:
Wendell Erb, Dave Dietrich,
Kevin Cooper and Bill Bresee.
First off I would like to mention the
Erb BBQ and what a great turnout
we had this year. As always the food
was good
and plentiful
and
everyoneenjoyed
it.
We wel-
Floyd and Pat Gerber brought the BBQ trailer and Pat
manned the Erb Gear sales table, thanks to you both. It
was a great day for employees,
as well as the many customers
that were able to attend;
it’s always good to put faces to
names.
Sheldon Parent & Trevor Collyer at
the BBQ
Again this year Erb made an
appearance at the Warkworth
Truck show and grabbed a couple
awards. James and Marsha
O’Rourke took home first place in the Best Paint Category
as well as the Best Highway Working Tractor. Congratulations
to you again this year, you make us look good out
there! Sadly, farewells are also in order for James and
Marsha. James has left us to pursue a different path and
we wish him well in his new position.
We lost a long time fixture here at Erb Trenton: Frank
Campbell, our Wash Bay Supervisor. He has decided retirement
was looking too good to pass up and has left
us for endless rest and relaxation. After his many years
here, he is greatly missed. Congratulations Frank, enjoy!!
Bob Thompson attaches a banner to a
trailer at the Trenton Legion to honour
our fallen soldiers. The truck and trailer
is placed on the ramp at the start of the
Highway of Hero’s to show our support,
thanks and condolences for those brave
soldiers that gave their lives.
Pat and Floyd Gerber with John O’Malley
Farewell also goes out to Jamie
Baird who has been with us for
a few years, but has decided to
relocate to the West . Good luck
Jamie, your sense of humour is
greatly missed.
We also said goodbye to a few
other employees here at Trenton.
Kris Charbonneau who
worked here for 12 years has
left us to work for one of our
customers in Belleville. After
years of afternoons and midnights
on a cold dock, Kris could
not resist the
straight day position
in a warm
environment.
We miss you Kris and wish
you well.
Adam Bright decided to return to his “roots” after three
years on the dock at Trenton. He is returning to a career
in the welding field and will be missed greatly. Good
Luck Adam!!
On the upside these departures created opportunities
to welcome new employees. In the office we have rewelcomed
Rhonda Smith as permanent Receptionist
for Trenton. She has replaced Amanda Joly who was
on maternity leave, but came back early to begin her
new position as Traffic/Shop Assistant. In the Wash Bay
we welcome Roy Galpin and Joshua Martin. Try to keep
dry out there this winter.
On the dock we welcome
James Davis, Lloyd Weedman,
Michael Seeley, Paul
Belec and Matthew Clarke.
In the driver pool we had
the greatest increase welcoming
Mark Landry, Robert
Bard, Don Noseworthy,
Ken Henry, Kevin Loucks,
Geoff Roberts, Jeff Delahunt,
Dave Reid, Greg Holt,
Al McInroy receiving Trenton’s 13 Year
No Lost Time Injury Award
from Kevin Cooper
Derrick Bormans, David Normile Tom Steacy and Wayne
Martin. We also welcome back Jeff McMaster who left
us for a short time, but has decided to return to Erb.
Congratulations to everyone and good luck!
REMEMBERING BRIAN MILLS
It is with great sadness that
we announce Brian Mills,
Trenton Driver passed away
on June 9th, 2011 at Trenton
Memorial Hospital in
his 60th year. Brian started
at Erb in 2000, but has been
off on leave since 2007. Our
thoughts and prayers are
with his family, friends and brother Doug Mills,
who is a currently a driver at the Trenton terminal.
He will be missed.

TRENTON TERMINAL
We would also like to say hello to our students this year,
Josh Hamilton and Richard Powell. Twice every year we
accept students for on the job experience and this is a
great opportunity for both the students and employees
here. We have two young fellows with us for job placement
through the Loyalist College Customs and Excise
Program. Welcome, we are looking forward to getting
to know you.
We will also be welcoming a new face within the Erb
Trenton family as dispatcher Dave Bright and his wife Jess
NORTH BAY TERMINAL
Greetings from the Gateway to the North!
I always say that because many years ago there really was a sort
of gateway over the road which still stands in a park close by and
you went under it to go north! Pretty basic eh?!
As far as the north part goes, we have only just received our first
snow at the end of November so we are pretty lucky there. Our
winters have not been the same as many years ago when they
started in October!
We just had our Christmas party last weekend and had a great
turn out. Many thanks to Reg Cormier, Brian Krauskopf, Guy Michauville
and their many helpers for cooking an excellent homemade
supper with all the trimmings. (Stuffing balls are a new favourite
of mine!) We had a lot of staff from days gone by come,
such as Mark and Bonnie Steinmann. Mark was our Terminal
Manager when we started in North Bay
and Elaine and Lavern Lebold were also in
attendance at the dinner. Elaine was very
“motherly” to us back in the early 80’s. It
was nice to see all of them again and they
send their best wishes.
Congratulations North Bay
for celebrating 25 years of
service in 2011!
ling with Terry over the years. Terry
now spends most of his time watching
his kids at the rink. He said we
We made it official and retired Terry Siblock
after over thirty years with the company.
Terry
fond memories
of working
with Erb and
are expecting a new brother or sister for Owen in May.
Congratulations to you both!!
Well, I guess that’s about it for this time. Have a safe,
happy holiday season and we’ll talk to you all next year.
would have to
hire five guys to
replace him, but
I think the posting
only went up for one part-time worker.
Just kidding Terry! Congratulations
on your retirement.
John Walsh
We welcome new drivers Steve Einarson
and Mike Walton who will
be busy helping with our growing
Walmart contract. We also welcome
Mike Smith, who is Ed Smith’s son,
on our dock. Mike, good luck trying
to keep up with your dad!
Terry Siblock Sadly we will be losing our dockhand
and cook Reg Cormier who
is returning to Gaspe Bay to take up farming and be with
family. Reg will be missed, best
of luck! Thanks also to Wendell
for donating the Leaf tickets
(which I won!) and for everyone
else who donated prizes for the
draw.
I hope everyone has a good
winter!
›› News from our Terminals
Where did the summer go? It seems like it just whizzed by!Where
to start? The new Erb terminal has recently opened in Quebec
City. The new facility’s a great improvement and we look forward
to serving our customers out of two locations.
Movember seems to have taken a grip on all male employees
throughout Erb. I’ve been bumping into drivers from other terminals
and seeing the many styles of moustaches lurking in the
driver lounge. Many of the dock/yard workers and office staff are
also participating. Way to go guys!
Driver Peter Antle and his wife Judy sent us amazing pictures of the
Bedford Fair where there was a huge Demolition Derby. It was the
183rd edition of the fair and is the oldest running fair in Quebec.
As you can see from the picture, Erb
was represented quite well. Judy
said it was a good piece of publicity
for Erb, however another person
said to Peter when the firefighters
were putting out the fire “Hey, it’s
now Another HOT Move!” Always a
wisecracker in the crowd!
Erb Vaudreuil welcomed a new addition to the family, the Walmart
Distribution Team! Walmart is making it fairly busy now a days
with more traffic flowing in and out of the terminal.
The summer Erb barbeque was a huge success this year. We had
a nice little visit from Wendell himself, serving up delicious hamburgers.
Again, culinary masters Gilles Decelles and Steve Fournier
flawlessly prepared for the event as well as Rob Young, Ricky Paquette
and Raymond Pitre on equipment and table set up duty.
Thanks guys! Also at the BBQ our own Natalie Taillon received an
award for all her hard work and dedication towards local charities
and breast cancer. Way to go Nat!!!
As usual, Dale Cooke came dressed for Halloween as Raggedy Ann,
handing out candies to the staff.
MONTREAL TERMINAL
ERB HOBBIES!
Jennifer Good is a Dispatch Assistant (currently on mat leave) at
our Montreal Terminal. In her spare time she enjoys getting out
on the race track to burn some rubber!
I got started two and a half years ago when Greg (Baldwin) took
me to watch the Enduro Races at Brockville Speedway. At the
end of the night I told him that I had to try it. That summer there
was only one race left which was the biggest race of the season.
Greg suggested that I watch the final race and then make the
decision if that is what I really wanted to start doing. Of course,
by the end of the race my mind hadn’t changed.
The following summer I was surprised on my 25th birthday with
my first race car from Greg and my first race was at 10:00pm
on July 30, 2010. With it being my first race and a night race I
There is a new
addition in
the high tech
realm. We now have
a TV screen where drivers
can see weather updates, road closure
and various Erb announcements.
We welcome all the new additions to the
Erb Montreal terminal: Stephanie Ball,
Christopher Beaudoin- Harsford, Daniel
Benoit, Nathalie Boivin, Alain Brisson,
Johnatan Charrier-
Tremblay, Denis
Gagnon, Sebastien
Gendron, Gaetano
Manganiello, Cory Mootrey, Elizabeth
Phillips, Nelson Soulieres, Brian St.James,
Carol West, and Marc-Andre Perreault
Also a big congratulations to new parents
Greg Baldwin and Jennifer Good on
the birth of baby Lincoln.
It’s always nice to see Erb giving back to
the community and reminds me that we
Jennifer Good
The Steckly Race Hauler
stopped by for a visit!
are a big family here. We recently helped Scouts Canada by
lending trailers for various fundraising events and they raised
over $1600, a 30% increase from the previous year! They
were very grateful for Erb’s support.
Well, that pretty much sums it up for now. The snow is around
the corner and the holidays are fast approaching. Happy Holidays
Erbland and drive safe, see you all in the spring!
Nick Launderville
thought I would be nervous. Surprisingly I wasn’t because
my adrenaline was pumping and it was so excited. The minute
I got on the track the only thing on my mind was winning!
Unfortunately I didn’t get
first place, but I did finish third out
of 20. I raced the rest of that season,
but had to take the next one
off because I was pregnant with
our new beautiful baby boy. I am
looking forward to getting back on
the track next summer.
Do you have a hobby or special talent you would like to
share with the rest of Erb? Please let us know and we can
include your story in the next Erban Report!

“Hey, it’s now Another HOT Move!”
de 30% comparativement à l’an passé!
BARRIE TERMINAL
Hello to my fellow colleagues and anyone that wishes to read
this issue of the Erban Report. Fall is upon us once again. As
I write this article the leaves have pretty much fallen off the
trees and the weather is fairly mild for this time of year. We
finished our fun with Halloween and we’re now getting ready
and looking forward to Christmas. It is just a matter of time
before the snow starts falling.
There have been a lot of staff changes at the Barrie terminal
this fall. We welcomed back John Tilley who used to work on
the Barrie dock many years ago. He has transferred from Montreal.
We also welcome back David Bowman who transferred
back from the US division. David also used to work in Barrie
many years ago driving for us. We would like to extend a welcome
to new face Nigel Perry, coming on board with us in our
Walmart division.
We have also had a few departures in Barrie. Good luck to
Heather Ridgway and Kristina Ottaway who left us; we wish
you both all the best in the future. Congrats to Murray Mc-
Guckin, our Dock Supervisor who retired in June. Everyone
wishes you the best in your retirement. Ron Perkins has been
named the new Dock Supervisor. Ron has been working on the
dock for a number of years. Congrats Ron!
Congratulations also goes to Don Post for getting eight quarters
scoring 100% on the Pro- Drive Program. Enjoy your $200.00
gift card!
One more congratulations go to driver, Kuldip Singh and his
wife Mandeep Kaur on the birth of their baby girl Sirat Kaur
on May 27th.
Back on June 27 we picked up a load at Cookstown Greens
in Thornton. These orders are fresh salad that usually goes to
the Governor General at the House of Commons in Ottawa.
However, on this day the order was for royalty, the Duke and
Duchess William and Kate for their visit in Canada. Our driver
Richard Gilbert picked up the load and joked how he would
love to switch the salad with salad from Zehrs to see if they
noticed the difference. Thanks to the folks at the Ottawa terminal
for tag teaming this delivery.
On the same day we had a local company who make Solar Panels
rent one of our trucks in the yard so they could perform
experiments. We cranked the reefer all the way down. They
created or simulated snow, shooting a mist so the panels were
covered and they could measure to see if they still produced
electricity, apparently when solar panels are covered in snow
they will not produce electricity. If they are successful they
will build these panels and sell them. I chatted with them
when they were doing this and it was looking positive at that
point. Unfortunately I never heard the final outcome.
Vince Kivell, one of our night rounders, was ecstatic to drive
the Scott Steckly Nascar Race hauler in August to Burls Creek
in Oro. Racing team, if you’re ever looking for a full time driver
I would not be
surprised if Vince
would take you
up on it.
The excitement keeps
happening for our Barrie
drivers! Local driver Jack Sutton was delivering to Orillia
Bakery and Deli when there was a sudden downpour flooding
the street. It looks like it was quite the rain storm!
Scott Jardine is also one
of our local drivers and
one day I asked him to
back his truck up to the
dock. Well, he backed
his truck right onto the
dock, I did not mean it
literally Scott! He was delivering
to Henry’s Fish in
Mactier which is on Sans
Souci Island. Paul comes by boat to the dock at the end of
12 Mile Bay Road to meet our truck and pick up his order.
If anyone is in our neck of the woods you should stop at
Henry’s Fish on Sans Souci or
the Midland location, the food
is amazing!
This concludes the Erban Report
from Barrie. Hopefully
we will remain steady through
the winter, as well as the rest
of our terminals, including
K-DAC. Enjoy the rest of fall
and winter! I wish everyone a
Merry Christmas and we will
do this again in the spring.
ELVERSON TERMINAL
Hello from Elverson! There isn’t much new at the terminal other
than we all survived a freak October snowstorm! Some of us
were without electricity for five days! I thought I would share
some highlights from Doug and my last mission trip to Kincome
Inlet.
KINCOME INLET MISSION TRIP
On June 30 we left for an adventure like nothing we have ever
experienced. We flew with a group of 11 other adults and chaperones
from Philadelphia to Seattle for the first leg of our 11 day
journey. Once in Seattle, we rented two vans and drove to Abbottsford
BC for orientation with Mennonite Disaster Service.
Happily, we got to spend some time with Doug’s Aunt and Uncle,
Mabel and Walter Paetkau who live in Abbottsford.
The next morning we took a ferry
to Nanaimo and then drove six
hours to Port McNeil on Vancouver
Island where we loaded our
equipment on a chartered boat
for a two hour ride across the
Queen Charlotte Strait. We were
thrilled to have a school of dolphins
follow in the wake of the
boat, performing for us for about 20 minutes. We also saw sea lions
sunning themselves on a large rock, a whale and several bald
eagles. We were dropped off at a float platform at the mouth of
the Kingcome Inlet for the remaining two miles up the river on
smaller boats captained by two of the Kingcome villagers, members
of a First Nations Tribe.
Once everything was unloaded and we
were settled in our home for the week
(a very modern school building) we got a
tour of the village. It’s small, about one
mile long, with 80 peoeple currently living
there. Tentative at first, the children of the
village warmed up to our group quickly and
the adults soon after that. They are very
suspicious of outsiders, but soon realized
we were there to help them. In September
2010 a massive flood heavily damaged all
the homes and other buildings in the village.
After days of heavy rain, the toe of a
glacier 20 miles further up the river, broke off and purged a massive
wall of water down the river and right into Kingcome. Everyone
survived and they were airlifted out by helicopter. After the
water receded several weeks later the villagers started coming
home to rebuild as best they
could. The Canadian government
sent a crew to raise
homes 12 feet about ground
level, but did not do any
interior repairs that were
needed. This is where MDS
comes in and the project we
were able to be a part of. Our
News from our Terminals ‹‹
group worked on
two houses. Jobs
included ripping
out everything to
the studs, dry walling, flooring
and plumbing. Doug spent most of the week doing
plumbing repairs. His days growing
up on a pig farm making water pipe
repairs came in handy as none of
the others had that skill. I spent my
days helping to drywall and eventually
cleaning one house that was
ready to move back in to. The family
that lived there was so appreciative
they could come home. The
wife was very ill with ovarian cancer
and really wanted to get back in
her own house.
Our
group was invited into
their Big House twice, an
honour. Once to listen
to percussion and singing
groups practicing for
an upcoming event and
another time for a community
celebration meal
for three ladies that had
survived cancer.
Another highlight was
going to a massive waterfall.
We could hear
the falls and see the mist
long before we arrived to
the falls. Needless to say,
we got a bit wet that day!
One of the “boats” used
to transport us was a 20
foot long dug out canoe. Thrilling and scary all at the
same time because it leaked! The only disappointment
that SOME of our group had was that we didn’t see any
bears, I was perfectly happy with that!
We were so blessed to be able to go on this trip! We definitely
felt God’s protection the entire time. None of our
group got sick and no one got hurt. Travel arrangements
going and coming home all went off without a hitch and
we arrived safely back in Morgantown on July 11, road
weary and tired, but with a deep sense of satisfaction
that we accomplished our “mission” in the Kingcome village.
ERB IS ALL ABOUT SAFETY!
SAFETY AT ITS BEST!
Health and safety is all about preventing people from being
harmed at work or becoming ill through work. Legislation
states that we must not put ourselves, other workers or the
public in danger and this applies to all companies of all sizes.
The Erb Group of Companies is recognized as an industry leader
in many facets, safety being one of them. Year after year statistics
prove safety is the number one priority for companies.
Everyday you read in the newspaper or hear on the news of an
accident or injury which has impacted an employee and their
family members. Our goal is to continually improve our “Road
to Zero”. We want to provide the safest working environment
possible for our employees as well as reassure family members
their loved ones are safe at work. I am happy to report
we have continued to reduce our personal injuries and vehicle
accidents. Without your support and engagement this would
not be possible, thank you!
I want to take a moment to reflect on the Driver Services department.
When many are asked to come to Driver Services
they think they’re in trouble. In some cases that may be true,
but not always. The main purpose and probably the most enjoyable
task of Driver Services is to provide training. We are
fortunate to have a group of safety professionals who strive
to aid drivers in becoming the best they can, through training,
awareness and development. Sometimes a driver may also be
called if they have made a mistake, forgot the rules or in some
instances, ignored the rules.
The Erb Group of Companies is mandated by legislation to ensure
all employees are aware of the rules and regulations and
Good news! Erb International has placed second in division
IV (25,000 to 49,999 million miles) of the Large Carrier Category
in the 2011 TCA (Truckload Carriers Association) National
Fleet Safety Award Program. In addition to earning the
2009 Grand Prize Award in the small carrier category, Erb
International also ranked as a finalist for the award in six of
the past ten years.
The TCA awards carriers for their commitments to safety and
accident reduction. The winners are selected based on their
accident ratios from October 1 to September 30 in any given
year. Division winners are subject to an audit for ratio accuracy
and invited to compete for one of two grand prizes.
follow them in the places we travel. Acts and regulations are
put into effect due to past history which has put people at
risk of death or injury. Companies, supervisors and employees
are being scrutinized in court to the fullest extent to determine
fault or liability. Those who have ignored the rules
or not enforced them have been held accountable through
jail time or fines. Erb’s ultimate goal is to ensure our employees
do not experience or are never responsible for a
situation like this or any others that you may have read of in
the newspaper.
Speaking of training and awareness, this year we have installed
Digital Signage (ErbVision TV’s) in the driver rooms
to provide a more efficient and better means of communication.
Weather reports, road conditions, border wait times,
current industry news, updates on new regulation and
safety reminders will be displayed. (Oh, and of course TSN
updates!)
In closing, this year the Erb Group Of Companies has been
blessed with a number of awards and recognitions due to
the efforts of everyone. Thank you for your commitment to
safety.
Here is wishing everyone safe travels and a happy holiday
season!
Tom Boehler
Director of Safety and Compliance
ERB INTERNATIONAL PLACES SECOND IN NATIONAL FLEET SAFETY AWARD!
Carriers with annual mileage of 25
million or fewer miles vie for one,
while companies with more than 25
million miles compete for the other.
Erb believes that providing employees
with the proper tools, training
and recognition is the key to safety
success. We want to thank everyone
for their commitment to safety and best practice, especially
our drivers.
THANK YOU!

Hello to you all at Erb! At our son Yanni’s vehicle-themed 3rd
to have most. He answered: ‘A tractor-trailer truck just like
my Baba’s!’ So we made him one and upon seeing the finished
product, Nick admitted to being a bit jealous, so he got one
too !(which doesn’t really count as taking your work home with
you) Here are some pictures from the party, our son’s wish
A View From the Driver’s Seat
Roger Zehr is a straight truck driver out of the Baden Terminal who
makes runs to New York City. He enjoys reading and writing (but
not arithmetic!) and is actively involved in various church ministries.
We thought you might enjoy his observations on life, from the
driver’s seat...
“History does not repeat itself; historians merely repeat
each other.”
History—the very word conjures up haunting memories of
sitting in a high school classroom with a history exam lying
on my desk top. Why am I not blessed with a “photographic
memory” so that I can remember the overabundance of unimportant
dates and events that seem so totally irrelevant
to my young life? That would allow me to fill in the blanks
with the ease and confidence I now lack. Why are my palms
so sweaty? I have more blanks on my paper than I have
answers! Really now, what does it matter what year Jacob
Columbus sailed the Nile River and discovered China? Or
was that Rome?
Fast forward 30-40 years and now history interests me. I
also realize that with more years behind me than ahead of
me, I am already part of history. Time has a way of passing
faster than we realize. For instance, I have been doing the
U.S. run to New York City longer than I thought. When I
started doing this run, I remember that the Statue of Liberty
was still just a little girl!
Most of us probably won’t have our names written in the
pages of some eager student’s history book because we altered
the course of history, but that doesn’t mean we can’t
make a difference in the life of someone, somewhere. We
all have the opportunity to make a difference while we live
in this world. (If you are reading this and breathing, you still
have time!) Just think of how someone has influenced your
life. All of us are given opportunities to impact others in a
positive manner. Do you look for these opportunities, or do
you let them slip by?
There was a man born two thousand years ago who altered
the course of history and who has influenced millions of
people both past and present. We are rapidly approaching
the time of year when we celebrate his entrance into this
world—the birth of Jesus Christ. So much has been written
about him by so many
people over so many
years that it is impossible
to deny his existence.
Both secular
and sacred writings give
historical facts and accounts of his life and are
found in almost every library. A holiday in our calendar year
commemorates his birth and causes us to greet each other
with a “Merry Christmas.”
His birth was predicted by prophets of old, centuries before
it happened. In the Bible, the prophet Isaiah says, “For a
child will be born to us, a son will be given to us. The government
will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called:
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Centuries later, an angel appeared
to shepherds guarding their flocks of sheep in a field
and told them the good news. “Today in Bethlehem a Saviour
has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11).
I encourage each of you this season to take in a Christmas
service to acquaint yourself with the most remarkable man
who has ever lived. He can change the way you make history,
which will in turn alter your future! Merry Christmas
to each of you and may you experience a wonderful New
Year 2012!
Riddell, Martin Fagg and Trevor Hooley for representing Erb at the 2011 Regional Truck
Driving Championships! Stew placed third in the Straight-Truck Class and Jeff Lambkin
placed third in the Single Tandem class. Stew also placed first at the Ontario Provincial
Truck Driving Championships and was also Grand Champion. He went on to represent Ontario,
winning at the Canadian National Truck Driving Championship for the Straight Truck
Class in Calgary in September. Congratulations everyone!
The Truck Driving Championships are run by a non-profit volunteer organization, dedicated to providing an
opportunity for professional truck drivers to demonstrate their skills; and also to promote safe-driving and
professionalism in the trucking industry. Drivers compete by way of a written test, an obstacle course and a
truck inspection.
THANK YOU GORD PEMBROKE!
LETTERS OF THANKS!
We recently received an email from customer Deborah at Lakeside Church:
“I must tell you that the gentleman who delivered the chicken is an AWE-
SOME man! Very nice, friendly and professional! “
Gord, thank you and congratulations on your outstanding performance!
WAY TO GO RANDY THOMAS!
We received a phone call from Steve Boyd, a driver for Sysco in Ottawa who
wanted to pass along his appreciation for Randy.
He was travelling along highway 7 and unfortunately hit two horses. He said
he had never hit anything before and was taken aback by the experience.
He explained that Randy was kind enough to stop and not only helped him
with flairs but walked him through what procedures he needed to follow.
Randy also stayed with him until the police came.
Thank you Randy, for not only helping a fellow driver, but for representing
Erb in such a professional manner!
Stew with wife Cindy
Thank you to the participants for
representing Erb so professionally!
celebrating 40 years with Erb in 2011.
I am so amazed how fast 40 years can go by. I’ve always enjoyed
working for Vernon and I’ve seen many changes to the
work environment at the Erb Group of Companies. Our roots
were planted in Wellesley with a handful of employees. It was
a real experience using a flat bed as our dock, even in minus
degree temperatures. Knowing everyone was an advantage
for all of us in the early years. You willingly helped one another
and never complained about the work, no matter how hard
it seemed. I wanted a lot of work and it was never denied. I
drove the miles to Windsor, the east coast, Ottawa, Thunder
Bay and Montreal. It provided me the opportunity to have a
good, prosperous life for my family.
Delivering on our promises since 1959
I’m an Erbanite and I’m all right
I sleep all day and I drive all night
I haul the loads and deliver the freight
Check the pallets and keep the count straight
I’m an Erbanite and I’m okay
I sleep all night and I key all day
I push the paper and answer the calls
Check in the bills from all the long hauls
I’m an Erbanite and I’m all right
I sleep all day and load trucks all night
I strip the pallets and count the cases
Load the freight to fill all the spaces
I’m an Erbanite and I’m okay
I sleep all night and look for product all day
I check the trailers and all the dark corners
Searching for the product to fill all the orders
We’re all Erbanites and we’re all right
We work in the day and also the night
