After the death of Dr. H.O. Shafer, the heirs sold their interests in<br />

Woodlawn to Dr. Milton E. Leckrone.<br />

The official board of the old Woodlawn hospital was comprised<br />

of the following: Dr. Winfield Scott Shafer, president; Dr. Howard O.<br />

Shafer, vice president; Charles C. Brackett, secretary and Miss Ada<br />

Leonard, superintendent. Of this original board all are deceased wih the<br />

exception of Miss Leonard, who at the present time is superintendent of<br />

a hospital in Middleton, Ohio.<br />

The personnel of the nursing staff during the earlier years of the<br />

institution included Miss Ada Leonard, Miss Polly Sparks, Miss Sadie<br />

Oliver, a Miss Woodrow, who was later to become Mrs. Stephen<br />

Newby, and Miss Carrier (Kammerer) Ginther. During the time<br />

Woodlawn was under the supervision of Dr. Howard O. Shafer, Miss<br />

Caroline Hogue, was the superintendent of nurses. Miss Hogue also<br />

served in the capacity of superintendent for Dr. Leckrone, for some<br />

time. Mrs. Effie (Shafer) Brackett, daughter of the founder of<br />

Woodlawn is in the employee in a professional capacity of the new<br />

institution. Mrs. Sarah Shafer, widow of Dr. W.S., resides with her<br />

daughter, Mrs. Brackett at 1017 Main Street. Mrs. Howard O. Shafer, a<br />

daughter-in-law and <strong>County</strong> Auditor Robert W. Shafer, a son of the late<br />

Dr. W.S. Shafer, are also residents of Rochester.<br />

MILLER, DR. VIRGIL<br />

Opened Office in Akron Today<br />

The News-Sentinel, Feb. 28, <strong>1936</strong><br />

Dr. Virgil C. Miller, son of Mrs. Rose Miller of this city and a<br />

brother of the late Dr. Russell Miller, who died one month ago, started<br />

the practice of medicine in Akron Friday morning. Dr. Miller is a<br />

graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine and has been an<br />

interne in the Epworth Hospital in South Bend since his graduation last<br />

spring. Dr. Miller attended Rochester High Schoiol, where he starred in<br />

basketball, football and track. He is married. Mrs. Miller is a<br />

registered nurse.<br />

KEWANNA BAKERY CLOSED<br />

Elmer Campbell, who has operated a bakery in Kewanna for over<br />

a year, this week closed the establishment and moved to Logansport, his<br />

former home.<br />
