Tour description: Visit a road exposure of a thrust-faulted sequence of Paleocene and Eocene deep<br />
marine fine siliciclastic sediments, interpreted as a Late Eocene or Early Oligocene<br />
accretionary complex. Further west the complex is juxtaposed with accreted Oligo-<br />
Miocene slope sediments. Examine exposures of PUB ophiolite and Owen Stanley<br />
Metamorphics along the Popondetta-Kokoda road.These rocks record a Paleocene<br />
(58 Ma) arc-continent collision. Visit the Ramu NiCo Mine<br />
Highlights: Great mountain scenery, colourful cultural events and opportunities to visit historic<br />
World War 2 Kokoda campaign sites.<br />

Special notes: Delegates are required to book own air travel to arrive in Port Moresby on evening<br />
of 31 July and to fly to Brisbane on morning of 5 August unless you request<br />
Quadrant Australia to book it for you. Moderate level of fitness is required. Need<br />
to be prepared for bumpy travel on roads in the Kokoda area. This field trip is not<br />
suitable for children.<br />

Day by day itinerary Day 1 - Tuesday 31st July <strong>2012</strong> - Arrive Port Moresby<br />
Delegates make own arrangements for arrival into Port Moresby where you will<br />
be met and transferred to your hotel. Inspection of local geology – Paleogene<br />
accretionary complex exposed in road cutting and quarry, if time permits before<br />
dinner.<br />

Day 2 - Wednesday 1st August <strong>2012</strong> - Port Moresby to Kokoda<br />
A packed breakfast will be available this morning due to your early morning<br />
transfer to the airport for the flight to Popendetta. On arrival you will be met by<br />
your driver for the trip to Kokoda. Examine exposures of PUB ophiolite and Owen<br />
Stanley Metamorphics along the Popondetta-Kokoda road. World War 2 sites<br />
include Oivi Ridge and Kokoda Plateau memorial and museum.<br />
On arrival at your hotel there’s time to freshen up before meeting for dinner and an<br />
evening of traditional cultural entertainment.<br />
