Special notes: Delegates are required to book own air travel to arrive in Christchurch on evening<br />

of 11 August. Trip finishes late afternoon on 15 August. Tour price includes<br />

domestic New Zealand flight from Christchurch to Hokitika return. This field trip is<br />

not suitable for children.<br />

Day by day itinerary Day 1 - Saturday 11th August <strong>2012</strong> Brisbane to Christchurch<br />

Delegates arrive into Christchurch. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to<br />

your hotel. Evening at leisure.<br />

Day 2 - Sunday 12th August <strong>2012</strong> - Christchurch to Franz Joseph<br />

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Hokitika from Christchurch.<br />

Visit outcrops of basement rock around the Alpine Fault and observe<br />

geomorphology in the Toharoa River area. Drive south to Franz Josef and settle into<br />

your hotel before meeting for dinner.<br />

Day 3 - Monday 13th August <strong>2012</strong> - Franz Joseph<br />

After breakfast visit outcrops of hanging wall basement, and observe glacial<br />

geomorphology around Franz Josef Glacier. Visit outcrop of Alpine Fault at<br />

Waikukupa River to observe faulting / glaciation interaction. Return to your hotel<br />

and freshen up before meeting for dinner.<br />

Day 4 - Tuesday 14th August <strong>2012</strong> - Franz Joseph<br />

After breakfast visit Gaunt Creek, the site of the finest exposure of the central Alpine<br />

Fault and of the first boreholes forming part of the Alpine Fault – Deep Fault Drilling<br />

Project. Observatory inspection and discussion of the project.<br />

Return to hotel with time to freshen up before meeting for dinner.<br />

Day 5 - Wednesday 15th August <strong>2012</strong> - Franz Joseph to Christchurch<br />

After breakfast, transfer to the airport in Hokitika for the return flight to Christchurch<br />

and onward travel – own arrangements.<br />

Equipment Required: Participants should be prepared for cold and wet weather conditions. Winter<br />

temperatures on the West Coast of the South Island are commonly sub-zero. Sturdy<br />

footwear is essential, preferably boots. Lots of socks are necessary as you will get<br />

wet feet. Water-proof rain gear is essential, as is warm clothing. Standard field gear<br />

is required (hammer, compass, camera).
