Trip description: Auckland is built on an active volcanic field comprising about 50 basaltic cones<br />

and maars, the youngest of which is only 600 years old. Visit the Auckland War<br />

Memorial Museum’s newly built volcano exhibit for an overview of the geological,<br />

economic, and social situation. Trip some of the most prominent cones. The<br />

trip ends with a visit to the city’s and region’s Civil Defence and Emergency<br />

Management services.<br />

Special notes: Includes two night’s accommodation in Auckland including airport transfers and a<br />

After breakfast meet your trip leader and depart for a full day tour to see the key<br />

features of the late Pleistocene – Recent Auckland Volcanic Field.<br />

Day 3 - Thursday 4th August <strong>2012</strong> - Onward travel<br />

Breakfast at leisure with transfer to the airport. Own onward flight arrangements to<br />

Equipment Required: Normal field gear including sturdy footwear and warm clothing. Be prepared for<br />

cool wet weather. Camera and hand lens essential.<br />
