Trip description: Traverse through the entire Amadeus Basin sequence, including Neoproterozoic<br />

carbonates and glacials and Devonian foreland basin deposits. Visit Gosses<br />

Bluff, which forms the exposed remnants of the central uplift of a Cretaceous<br />

comet impact, Kings Canyon, which will combine spectacular scenery and<br />

geomorphology with an opportunity to view well-exposed Ordovician fluvial and<br />

marine deposits. The trip will end at the iconic Uluru and Kata-Tjuta (Ayers Rock<br />

and the Olgas) which preserve arkoses and conglomerates that were deposited in a<br />

deep foreland basin during the late Neoproterozoic to Cambrian<br />

Day by day itinerary Day 1 - Saturday 11th August <strong>2012</strong> - Brisbane to Alice Springs<br />

Arrive Alice Springs and make your own way to the hotel.<br />

Day 2 - Sunday 12th August <strong>2012</strong> - Alice Springs to Ellery Creek<br />

After breakfast depart Alice Springs for Ellery Creek. On arrival you will walk/<br />

drive to view the section from basal Neoproterozoic Heavitree Quartzite at Ellery<br />

Big hole, through the rest of the Neoproterozoic section, ( including glacial), and<br />

through the Palaeozoic section finishing in the Devonian Mereenie Sandstone.<br />

Arrive at Glen Helen for dinner and overnight.<br />

Day 3 - Monday 13th August <strong>2012</strong> - Ellery Creek to Kings Canyon<br />

After breakfast depart for Ormiston Gorge where you will view the deformation of<br />

Heavitree Quartzite and overlying Bitter Springs Formation on the basin margin.<br />

Drive on to Tylers Pass to view Gosses Bluff impact structure and then drive into the<br />

crater. Continue on to Kings Creek Station for dinner and overnight.<br />
