S-4 Ediacaran-Cambrian of South Australia (continued)<br />

Trip description: Examine the oldest preserved multicellular organisms in the Ediacaran of the<br />

Flinders Ranges, as well as some of the spectacular Cambrian biodiversity of South<br />

Australia. Visit the fossiliferous carbonate successions at Ajax Mine and Mt Scott<br />

Range, plus a visit to the lower Cambrian Emu Bay Shale Lagerstätte on Kangaroo<br />

Island, which preserves a diverse marine biota including soft-bodied animals<br />

Highlights: Spectacular scenery, wildlife and geology, Kangaroo Island<br />

Day by day itinerary Day 1 - Saturday 11th August <strong>2012</strong> - Adelaide<br />

Upon arrival in Adelaide meet in your hotel foyer to be collected for your tour to<br />

the South Australian Museum to view the fossil collections. This evening meet for<br />

dinner and an introduction to the field trip. You may be joined by sponsors and<br />

dignitaries.<br />

Day 2 - Sunday 12th August <strong>2012</strong> - Adelaide to Rawnsley Park Resort<br />

Depart Adelaide and travel north on Highway One to Port Wakefield. Continue<br />

onto Pichi Richi Pass, for a picnic lunch stop and inspection of Elatina Formation<br />

rhythmites. After lunch continue on via Quorn and Hawker to Rawnsley Park.<br />

Day 3 - Monday 13th August <strong>2012</strong> - Rawnsely Park Resort to Parachilna<br />

After breakfast travel up Blinman road east of Wilpena Pound for a photo and<br />

geological stop. Continue on to the Flinders Ranges National Park via Bunyeroo<br />

Gorge scenic road with a stop at a lookout at Razor Back for Ediacaran<br />

succession, a second Acraman stop at Bunyeroo Gorge, then drive on to the<br />

Brachina <strong>Geological</strong> Trail. From here you will travel east to the classic Trezona Fm<br />

stromatolite site, Trezona Bore track to Ediacaran GSSP site (Elatina Fm diamictite,<br />

GSSP, Nuccaleena Fm (cap carbonate) then drive west into Brachina Gorge and<br />

stop at the Wonoka Formation, Bonney Sandstone, Rawnsley Quartzite and classic<br />

Ediacara Member fossil site; Parachilna Fm burrow beds marking the base of the<br />

Cambrian; Wilkawillina Limestone archaeocyathid bioherms; final stop at end of<br />

Brachina Trail for the Wirrealpa LS with brachiopod and trilobite hash beds and<br />

interpretation signs. Pause to view the sun set on the western Flinders Ranges<br />

before arriving at your hotel for dinner and overnight.<br />
