Trip description: The southern New England belt, in the area between Brisbane and Sydney, is a<br />

Late Paleozoic to Early Mesozoic subduction-related orogen. The field trip will<br />

explore the tectono-magmatic evolution of the orogen and the development of a<br />

series of tight oroclines. See the different components of the bent orogen and make<br />

observations on the multiple episodes of magmatism and deformation.<br />

Highlights: Spectacular coastal and mountainous scenery, fascinating geology, world-class<br />

wineries<br />

Day by day itinerary Day 1 - Saturday 11th August <strong>2012</strong> - Brisbane to Tenterfield<br />

Depart Brisbane by coach and travel to Cunningham’s Gap for an introduction to<br />

the geology of the New England Orogen. Travel on to view Texas Beds, Gerymare<br />

Granite then two further stops at Texas Beds. Further stops include Mt You You and<br />

the Granite Belt to see Permo-Triassic granitoids and volcanic rocks, followed by an<br />

optional wine tasting in the Granite Belt if time permits.<br />

Arrive into Tenterfield where you will check into your hotel for dinner and<br />

overnight.<br />

Day 2 - Sunday 12th August <strong>2012</strong> - Tenterfield to Nambucca Heads<br />

After breakfast travel from Tenterfield to Glen Innes with stops along the New<br />

England Highway to view Permo-Triassic granitoids. Travel on to Red Range to visit<br />

Yarrow Creek where you will see Henry River Granite before travelling across to<br />

Nambucca Heads with stops along the way at Wongwibinda, Abroi Granite, Ebor<br />

Falls and the Dorrigo Mountain Complex.<br />

Arrive in time to check into your hotel for dinner and overnight.<br />

Day 3 - Monday 13th August <strong>2012</strong> - Nambucca Heads to Port Macquarie<br />

After breakfast spend the morning looking at the deformation in Early Permian<br />

rocks around Nambucca Heads followed by the deformation in Early Permian<br />

rocks around Scotts Head. Continue south to Port Macquarie to view bluschists and<br />

serpentinites.<br />

Arrive into Port Macquarie with time to check in and freshen up before dinner.<br />
