Transfer Manager<br />

joins Prairie<br />

Swine Centre<br />

Lee Whittington, President<br />

of Prairie Swine Centre, has<br />

announced the appointment<br />

of Ken Engele as Technology<br />

Transfer Manager.<br />

Ken brings more than 14<br />

years of swine industry<br />

experience, both on the<br />

commercial level, in addition<br />

to developing expertise in the<br />

areas of assessing the economic<br />

impact of hog marketing<br />

and research in the swine<br />

industry. At Prairie Swine<br />

Centre his work will focus on<br />

delivering an effective and<br />

timely communication with<br />

pork producers, and those<br />

organizations that service the<br />

pork industry. Ken will also be<br />

responsible for managing the<br />

Technology Transfer component<br />

of the Canadian Swine and<br />

Research Development Cluster.<br />

The CSRDC consists of 14<br />

research projects across Canada<br />

designed to reduce the cost<br />

of production and focus on<br />

product differentiation. Ken<br />

will be responsible for working<br />

with researchers funded by<br />

the program to ensure timely,<br />

accurate delivery of results<br />

from the research to the<br />

industry.<br />

Discovery Centre<br />

“This is an exciting day for<br />

agriculture,” said Karl Kynoch,<br />

chair of the Manitoba Pork<br />

Council, speaking at the grand<br />

opening on Friday, September<br />

16, of the Bruce D. Campbell<br />

Farm and Food Discovery<br />

Centre at the University of<br />

Manitoba’s Glenlea Research<br />

Station (just south of Winnipeg<br />

of Highway 75). The Manitoba<br />

Pork Council, Kynoch noted,<br />

contributed to the construction<br />

of the hands-on interpretive<br />

facility with a $1 million<br />

donation – and Kynoch topped<br />

that up with the presentation<br />

of a cheque for $20,000 to<br />

Dr. Michael Trevan, Dean of<br />

the university’s Faculty of<br />

Agricultural and Food Sciences,<br />

to be used to help promote the<br />

centre and bring people out.<br />

The Bruce Campbell Discovery<br />

Centre is intended to<br />

demonstrate modern farming<br />

and food production. The<br />

exhibits include viewing<br />

windows that allow visitors to<br />

peek into a real swine research<br />

barn, a tractor operator’s seat<br />

where visitors can “drive”<br />

through fields on a screen and<br />

a grinder where visitors can<br />

make their own flour.<br />

“We believe this facility will<br />

be a wonderful tool to help tell<br />

the story of pork production<br />

and farming,” Kynoch said.<br />

“We are also looking forward<br />

to bringing Manitoba Pork<br />

visitors from countries<br />

such as China, Japan, Russia<br />

and the EU to this centre so<br />

that they see firsthand what<br />

we do in Manitoba to improve<br />

food safety.”<br />
