KwaNdancama bones
buried in mass grave
KWANELE BUTANA
At long last the bones which
were excavated in Kwa-
Ndancama in 2007 have been
reburied.
The reburial of 96 human remains
(contained in separate boxes) took
place in a mass grave at Luvuyo Hall
in Fingo Village on Thursday. This
followed the Makana council’s resolution
that the remains be reburied in a
mass grave in the fenced area of the
hall in close proximity to the historically
significant Lobenguela Graves.
The bones are believed to have
belonged to soldiers who fell during
the Frontier War of 1819 but there is
no evidence which supports this view.
The bones were excavated when
the municipality was developing the
area from an informal settlement
to a township with RDP houses and
water-borne toilets.
During public consultation meetings
conducted early last year, no
residents came forward to claim any
of the deceased was their next-of-kin.
Meanwhile, the bones were being
kept at Inggs Funeral Home while an
archaeological impact assessment
was being compiled by independent
achaeologists.
of his ex-students accused him of assault
last year. The student, Zimasa
her and her friends after Faltein
gave them a lift home from Albany
assaulted the students after letting
them out of the car.
The Grahamstown Magistrate’s
Court found Faltein not guilty two
Makana Parks and Recreation
“memorial rededication” service will
be held next year after the holiday period
“when all councillors and officials
are back from the Christmas/New
Year recess. The date will be decided
on in the new year and it will probably
be in late January or early February
when we’ll put up a tombstone
and a say a little memorial prayer,”
Ex-lecturer aquitted
of assault charge
weeks ago. He then approached Grocott’s
“I feel that the school’s student
affairs [department] has failed me.
No one listened to my side of the
story, but I am glad that the court
of law has proved my innocence,”
Faltein said.
He resigned from the college in
December 2008 after declining to attend
an internal disciplinary hearing
alleging that the college failed to follow
the Labour Relations Act. Faltein
stated that the school’s management
notified him that they would take a
decision in his absence. The college
then found him guilty. He claims to
have sent an appeal to the college’s
head office in Uitenhage to which he
has had no response. Attempts by
Grocott’s Mail to contact East Cape
Midlands College proved unfruitful.
A MAKANA councillor has been
charged with human rights violations
following “offensive” statements
he made during a meeting
with the land, housing and
infrastructure development portfolio
committee in September.
The committee’s chairperson,
Zamuxolo Peter, offended employees
of the technical and infrastructural
services department by saying
that he will not tolerate sloppy work,
laziness and any “service delivery
related sabotage” carried out by officials
in the department.
Following the meeting, the eleven
concerned staff members compiled
a letter of complaint and sent
it to the Human Rights Commission
and also forwarded it to the executive
mayor, municipal manager, premier
of the Eastern Cape, MEC for
local government and traditional
affairs, provincial secretary of the
ANC Women’s League, public protector,
as well as Makana director
Dabula Njilo.
The employees who filed the
complaint are C Mbele, Bonani
Pakama Booi, Nomakula Ntontela,
Martha Letsoalo, Clive Christian,
Zuki Mkhuzo, N Godola and Thendo
During a mayoral meeting held
in September following the allegations,
Municipal Manager Ntombi
Baart reported that, “In their letter
of complaint, the aggrieved employees
cited the following issues as
the main causes of the dissatisfaction:
local xenophobia, humiliation
of officials regarding allegations of
incompetence, offensive responses
from the councillors during portfolio
meetings, infringement of rights
including officials not being allowed
to respond when attacked by councillors
and discrimination against
officials due to political party
affiliation.”
Baart later convened a meeting
with Mayor Vumile Lwana, chief
whip Melikhaya Phongolo, the HR
manager, the labour relations officer
and the affected staff members.
“The purpose of such a meeting was
to hear the details of their grievances
and recommend the appropriate
measures to be taken,” Baart
explained. “After a lengthy meeting,
it was agreed that the aggrieved
The employees provisionally
withdrew their complaints and opted
to use the municipality’s grievance
procedure, saying that they
might have acted out of anger. However,
Makana spokesperson Thandy
Matebese said that so far only three
of the eleven employees have withdrawn
remaining officials have requested
on their intentions.
Man appears
in court for
Jansen murder
ABONGILE MGAQELWA
A MAN accused of murdering a
Kenton-on-Sea businessman briefly
appeared at the seaside town’s
Magistrate’s Court yesterday
(Thursday). The 25-year-old man
was arrested in East London two
weeks ago, exactly three weeks after
he was allegedly involved in the
murder of Kenton-on-Sea Kwik Spar
owner Juan Jansen.
On November 23 Jansen was
killed in broad daylight in the small
seaside town while walking to the
bank to deposit money.
It was reported that robbers demanded
money from Jansen, shot
him in the leg, and then shot him in
the chest when Jansen threw the
money at them. The suspects then
fled the scene.
The murder shocked the small
coastal community. According to
residents, this was the first crime of
its kind.
Members of the community said
the suspects, who are from Port Elizabeth,
were visiting their brother in
Kenton-on-Sea when they committed
the crime.
Police spokesperson Captain
Mali Govender said police are still
investigating.

Ex-mayor shot dead
ABONGILE MGAQELWA
THE senseless killing of former
Alexandria mayor and ANC
chairperson of the Ndlambe
region, Thembile Bethe last
Saturday has left the small
community reeling in shock.
Bethe was shot dead in
front of his house on Saturday
night. A statement issued by
police said a witness who was
with Bethe at the time of the
shooting told them that they
had been driving to Bethe's
home when they saw a white
bakkie following them. The witness
alleged that when they
stopped outside Bethe's home,
shots were fi red at them.
Police spokesperson Mali
Govender said: “When they
stopped outside the home at
the farm called De Tuiner, a
shot was fi red at them, missing
them. The victim (Bethe) who
was the driver told the witness
to lie down. At this stage the
victim (Bethe) got out and several
more shots were fi red at
him. The suspect vehicle then
Bethe had been shot in the
Provincial ANC spokesperson,
Mlibo Qoboshiyane said
the news of Bethe's killing was
“quite shocking. We were very
shocked and concerned by
the senseless murder of our
comrade. We are not sure at
the moment of what motivated
the killing but we trust that the
long arm of the law will take
its course. We want the law to
take stern action against criminals.
There should be zero tolerance
in crimes such as this.”
An Alexandria resident
who lives in Nonkqubela Township
not far from Bethe's home
condemned the murder. She
said: “We were so shocked
when we heared the news of
Mr Bethe's passing. Our community
is still recovering from
this. What breaks my heart
is the fact that his children
Children find body
near petrol station
ABONGILE MGAQELWA
POLICE are investigating a case of murder after a man was
found dead in Alexandria on Monday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said that
Johannes Potgieter's body was found by two children a short
distance from a local service station. A community member
who preferred to remain anonymous said Potgieter, a former
Post Office employee, had stab wounds in his face and head.
Potgieter's murder comes two days after the town's ex-mayor
Thembile Bete was shot dead in front of his house over the
weekend.
Govender said Potgieter's wife, who had reported him missing
at the Alexandria Police Station on Monday morning, had
last seen her husband on Friday last week when the couple had
visited a local tavern. She said Potgieter had refused to leave
the tavern and she had left him there to return home. Govender
said no arrests have been made and that police are still investigating.
According to a police report on crime statistics in Alexandria
there have been 24 murders in the small town between
April 2003 and March 2009, with 33 cases of culpable homicide
and 132 cases of sexual crimes having been reported.
met at the council chamber
the municipality's response
to their grievances.
One of the major issues
was Grahamstown's unemployment
being access to land including
the commonage areas. UPM
leader Ayanda Kota stated
that the unemployment rate
Wells also stated that the
municipality was “making
efforts in various sectors to
address these issues”. She
said the municipality had analysed
the commonage issue
and looked at carrying capacity.
Regarding the employment
issue Wells said “the
creation of small businesses
which falls under
the municipality. However,
Wells added that the creation
of short-term employment
falls outside of the municipality’s
Director of social and
community services, Mandisi
Planga, said that the municipality
has set aside about
R3 million for the upgrading
of infrastructure and commonage.
He also said that
they have submitted a skills
was sitting next to the driver
to pay for both of them. It is
alleged that when the victim
got out of the taxi, the driver
took out a firearm and shot
him in the right leg. The victim
was admitted to Settlers
Hospital. It is further alleged
that the driver who shot the
victim was also threatened
by the victim and opened a
case against him. Both cases
are being investigated and
no arrests have been made.
Liberty and Progress
Established 1870
Some breathing
space
The students have left and the areas around campus
and High Street are mostly quiet now. Many university
staff members have taken advantage of the academic
vacation to enjoy their holidays elsewhere. Various
businesses, especially restaurants and cafes, close down at
this time of the year as their clientele leaves town.
The townships on the other hand, are rocking as residents
who work in the big cities return home to join their
families for the festive season.
In most parts of the country, the building trade tends
to wind down over December and January, but in Grahamstown,
handymen, painters and plumbers are able to find
plenty of work as landlords spruce up their digs ahead of
the wave of returning students for the next academic year.
The festive season is a time for parties and family gettogethers.
All the merrymaking can get raucous and out of
hand, but this is really a time for relaxation and reflection.
This year in particular, the festive season is a good time
to rest and reflect on 12 months that have just flown by. We
need breathing space to gather our thoughts ahead of 2010,
a year that promises to be more momentous than most. To
help readers recall the year that was, we are going to devote
next Tuesday’s edition to the highlights and low-lights
of 2009. As it will be the last edition of the year, we will look
back at some of the stories that dominated our headlines in
2009 and present our readers with a selection of the year’s
best photographs.
In line with the contemplative theme of the next edition,
we are going to announce the name of the Grocott’s Mail
Newsmaker of the Year for 2009. This award is not necessarily
for someone who helped others, or who has been a
good citizen. The Newsmaker of the Year could be an exemplary
citizen but he or she could also be someone terrible.
To help toss around some ideas on who the Newsmaker
of the Year could be, we canvassed some opinions from the
streets of Grahamstown. You can see the results of this
unscientific survey on Your Say on Page Four.
There is a tenth birthday celebration going
to take place in Grahamstown next
year and it should not be kept a secret.
In fact, everyone in Grahamstown ought
to be thinking about how they can take
ownership of this birthday party and turn it
into a significant cultural event. Visitors to
Grahamstown should also be thinking of
how they can get a slice of the cake.
The Egazini Outreach Project turns ten
years old next July. Located in a former
apartheid-era police station, Egazini is a
dynamic community arts, culture and heritage
initiative. The project was founded in
June 2000 by two Grahamstown academics,
Dominic Thorburn and Julia Wells, to
enable local township folks to re-interpret
the local historical Egazini battle site.
Today, the Egazini Outreach Project functions
as both a heritage initiative and as an
economic empowerment project for local
artists and crafters.
Egazini means “a place of blood” as
it is the battlefield where the Xhosa Chief
Makana attacked the British settlers of
Grahamstown in 1819. The battlefield is
protected by the South African Resources
Heritage Agency as a heritage site. The
building from which the project operates is
located not far from this site and is more
than just a place that pays homage to
those whose blood was spilled in the battle.
It is a place from which creativity and
hope is kindled.
Violet Booi is one of the elderly women
who work at the project to make prints and
designs on fabric. Her enthusiasm for the
project is overwhelming as she welcomes
you to take a walk through the craft shop
and its accompanying workshop spaces. As
you walk through the building, you can only
marvel at how the haunting brutality of the
old police station has been transformed by
the artworks that are on display and for sale.
This is an empowering example of how
the arts can allow local communities to
Wind farm debate
It has belatedly come to my attention that
there is a plan to locate a wind-farm at
Waainek – aptly named “blow-gap”, and
that this proposal has occasioned some
concern. I lived in Grahamstown from
1978-2004, and will return to live there in
the future – it is deeply my home. So why
does the notion of a wind farm at Waainek
concern me? As a keen environmentalist
surely I would be in favour of this
relatively benign form of energy generation
– and I am deeply concerned about
the implications of climate change and
the rampant use of coal for energy. Well, it
stems from the way in which we as communities
fail to get together to share our
take ownership of telling their history and
through which they can sustain themselves
economically.
However, it is rather disappointing that
this remarkable heritage and cultural initiative
is still somehow regarded as Grahamstown’s
most well kept secret. A search
through local tourism materials gives
the Egazini Outreach Project very scant
mention. While the roads to Grahamstown
are boldly marked to inform travellers that
they are entering Frontier Country territory,
there is not a single sign that points in the
direction of the historic battle site or to
the Egazini Outreach Project. Perhaps, in
anticipation of the project’s tenth birthday
next year, directional signage could be a
generous birthday gift that Makana
Municipality could give to this arts and
legacy project.
In a city that is rife with economic impoverishment
and unemployment, the level
of skills that Thorburn and Wells have invested
with the local community members
who manage the Egazini Outreach Project
is commendable. However, the project can
grow much bigger if local Grahamstown
citizens take pride in the success of this
project and make it their business to take
visitors to Grahamstown to visit it and to
support the local artists.
Each year during the National Arts Festival,
the artists and crafters who work at
the Egazini Outreach Project travel in local
taxis to the city centre to sell their wares to
festival visitors. The project receives scant
promotion in local tourism collateral so
most visitors to Grahamstown are oblivious
of the existence of this dynamic space
from which creativity just oozes.
Next year, more than a thousand visitors
will gather at Miki Yili Stadium which is
a stone’s throw from the Egazini Outreach
Project. The stadium is designated as a
public viewing area during the Fifa soccer
world cup. It will be an indictment on the
city if this significant tenth birthday of the
project is not capitalised upon to draw
soccer fans to support the local artists
and crafters. Egazini may be a place of
blood but it is right here where the Egazini
Outreach Project stands as a testimony
deep values and come to common views
and compromises.
In this instance, my personal “conflict
of interest” is that I am Associate at
Umariya Umama we Themba Monastery
– and I understand the wind farm will
impact negatively on the “peace and tranquillity”
of the monastery. But the simple
notion of “peace and tranquillity” is selling
the monastic grounds, the monastery
and the monks short. At Hill and Dale –
as it was called – we as the Grahamstown
community have hallowed ground where
prayer and reflection have been practised
and nurtured for many decades. Many
of us travel widely and return there,
recognising it as holy – a sacred site. We
– the Grahamstown community - also
have, in the same area, a site where we
can potentially generate energy. Which
do we choose and why? Is it even we, the
community, who choose?
Some thoughts – the sacred is much
discounted in our world today – even
more discounted than places of wild
nature! So the fact that the life commitment,
and livelihood of a small group of
monks would be disrupted and threatened
is unlikely to draw a great deal of
concern. Why should something that is
precious to so few, jeopardize energy solutions
for many? But then – why should
energy for an energy-wasteful society
that has never really tried to practice energy
restraint jeopardize so rare a thing
as the practice of peace, deep prayer and
compassion. That practice, in that valley,
Grocott’s Mail, Friday 18 December 2009
The blood of hope - Egazini turns ten years
Ismail Mahomed
of hope for the artists who work in the old
police station. It is their blood and their
sweat that will shadow the brutal history of
the building and colour it with inspiration,
creativity and productivity.
For the citizens of Grahamstown, the
Egazini Outreach Project is a living testimony
of how far we have all travelled in our journey
to reconcile the past with the present. The
tenth birthday of the Egazini Outreach Project
must find us all joining hands to strengthen
this road and to allow visitors to our city to
travel this journey with us.
The birthday party must start in
earnest. It must commence with Makana
Municipality putting up directional signage
to the centre. Local schools must take
their learners to the centre to learn
about the city’s history. A new generation
of academics and students at Rhodes
University should be able to see the value
of Thorburn and Wells' vision. They must
commit themselves to grow that vision
through newer university student outreach
initiatives.
Local businesses should find ways
through which they can channel their corporate
social responsibility commitments
to invest in the growth of the centre. Hotels
and other accommodation establishments
must keep information about the project at
the disposal of their visitors. They should
entice their guests to visit the centre. The
tourism authorities in the city and the province
must commit themselves to increasing
the visibility of the Egazini Outreach
Project.
Even the National Arts Festival must
join the party and celebrate the project as
a dynamic example of how legacy, arts and
economics can be married.
This must be the one party that the
citizens of Grahamstown should not miss!
We need to ensure that every visitor leaves
the city with a piece of artwork bought
from the artists and crafters at the Egazini
Outreach Project. Their sweat is a creative
way in which homage is paid to the spirits
of the fallen in Egazini!
enlightens all of us whether we acknowledge
it or not.
How do we find pathways into the
future when so much of what we value is
shrinking?
I am not sure. Possibly though, talking
to each other, finding public fora, exchanging
ideas and doing the hard work of conflict
resolution, are ways forward. If asked,
I would vote against the wind farm – and
I would want to engage in the process of
seeking alternatives. As for this letter – it
serves to express that I deeply value the
hard-worked quiet of that valley.
Tally Palmer
Why did he go
back?
It is very sad when victims, such as the
late Clive Newman, are no longer able to
defend themselves. Such cases should be
held in camera so the media, which made
a field day of this sad and traumatic case,
do not have access. It is very hard to believe
that Clive behaved in the way that the
accused described. The damage that has
been done to Clive's character could be described
as a double murder! The accused
had every opportunity to avoid going back
Healing at a Home of Joy
Kirsty CooKe
Margaret Ngcangca
has devoted 15 years
of her life to caring
for the children of others. After
her own children left home
Margaret knew that her days
of child rearing were not yet
over.
After taking in a pregnant
13-year-old girl as her first
foster child, Margaret soon realised
what God had planned
for her. Now, living off a pension
and a government welfare
grant that only supports six of
her 13 foster children, Margaret
relies on the generosity of
others to get by.
And others have come to her
aid: her own children contribute
to much of her monthly income,
Oatlands Bakery delivers bread
to her home every day, and other
small local businesses, such as
Spar, donate household goods on
a regular basis.
In this way Margaret has
managed to survive. She says
she can offer each child the
support and care they need.
Each day the children get
well-balanced meals mainly
comprising of yoghurts, fruit
and vegetables and they
are taken to school either
by Margaret or by the older
children in the family. Once
a month Margaret takes
the HIV positive children to
Settlers Hospital for their
check-ups and to renew their
stocks of antiretroviral drugs.
The queues are often very long
and this process can take up
much of the day.
Before they depart for the
day at the hospital Margaret
packs each child a fruit and
yoghurt to have while they
wait. Doctors at the clinic are
amazed at the transformation
in all of the children.
Asanda Krantz, one such
child, has had a remarkable
recovery under Margaret’s
care. Margaret found Asanda
lying alone and very ill in a bed
at Settlers Hospital.
She visited him as often as
she could but was told that he
had very little chance of survival.
Both of his parents had died
of Aids and no one in his family
wanted him.
Margaret told the doctors
she would take him but they
were sceptical and said that
she could not blame them
when the child died. Two years
later Asanda is the healthiest
he has ever been: a vibrant
four-year-old who dominates
most conversations, and is always
the first to come outside
and play. Doctors are amazed
at his recovery.
Margaret says she knew
that, as with all of her foster
children, love would heal him.
She lives by this mantra and
feeds love to each child in massive
doses.
With each child having
been exposed to horrifying
amounts of pain and suffering
before being brought to Margaret’s
door, her care extends
past nutrition and far into the
realms of the pscyhological.
She must act both as a mother
and father to each of these
children, and while with 13
that may seem impossible, she
manages with ease.
While recounting the stories
of two girls who were both
brutalised by their fathers,
Margaret calls them both to
have their photograph taken.
She slowly undresses them
while explaining how the
burns and scars occurred.
When asked if the girls
minded having their pictures
taken, she explains that she
has taught both girls that their
disfigurements are not their
fault and therefore there is no
need for shame.
She says they are both
comfortable in their own skins
and while they know that they
look different Margaret has
spent much time convincing
them that because it was not
their fault it is nothing to be
ashamed of.
She has taught them to be
open and honest about their
disfigurements and to never
show shame as this gives power
to those that hurt them. To
stand tall, she says, is to rise
above their disabilities.
The two girls have clearly
taken in these ideas and speak
of their scars as reminders
of a life that was different to
the joyful one they share with
Margaret now.
While Margaret may be
the keystone in this set-up
she does not do it alone. The
children all help with cooking,
bathing and cleaning. The
elder children take turns to
look after the younger children
children have given her a new
renewed energy and sense of
Esihle B&B owned by Nothyolo Bungane
was graded as a three-star B&B
while Eluyolweni B&B, owned by Siziwe
Thinta, was graded with two stars by
the Tourism Grading Council of South
Africa (TGCSA). The grading process
is important because tourists and business
travelers are more likely to stay at
a graded establishment than at one without
a grading. Guests staying at graded
establishments are guaranteed a level of
quality as these establishments have to
meet certain requirements set out by the
TGCSA before they can be graded.
Senior Tourism Officer, Vuyani Njovane
said that in 2006 the Tourism Office
started a township home stays project
with the vision of upgrading the home
stays into B&Bs. “When we saw that
these two B&Bs meet the TGCSA requirements,
we approached the Eastern
Cape Tourism Board to help get these
businesses graded,” he said. The ECTB
pays 50% towards the grading process
and the SMME pays the other half.
Bungane of Esihle B&B in Extension
5 started her establishment because
of the demand for accommodation in
Grahamstown with all the graduations,
festivals and conferences. Bungane has
MAKING HOSPITALITY HISTORY... Nothyolo Bungane of Esihle B&B in Extension 5
was given a three-star grading. Photo: Busisiwe Hoho
40 years experience teaching Home
Economics and said this is what makes
her establishment so different. “I have
learnt a lot about interior decorating and
hospitality while teaching,” she said. Esihle
currently has three lounges, and six
bedrooms each uniquely decorated with
en suite baths and televisons with DSTV.
Two of the bedrooms are outside which
gives the guests more privacy. “I wish to
thank Makana Tourism and the Grahamstown
Hospitality Guild for all their help
and support since starting my business,”
Bungane said. She also employs neighbours
to help out when she has many
guests staying at her home.
Thinta of Eluyolweni B&B, a five-bedroom
establishment also in Extension
5, said that she is happy that she finally
reached the grading stage. She also said
that she will not relax but will work even
harder to improve her business so she
can earn another star for herself. Thinta
said that her establishment's cleanliness
and the way she treats her guests is what
sets her apart from other competitors.
Both B&Bs are listed on the Makana
Tourism website and their rates, as determined
by Makana Tourism, range
from R250 per person per night to about
R275 with a reduced price for couples.
“We’d like to have at least 10 B&Bs in the
township by 2010 but our vision goes beyond
that,” said Njovane. He added that
“our doors are open to other B&Bs who
want to go through this grading process.”
The ECTB still has funds available for
SMMEs looking to be graded.
I
have been living and working in Grahamstown
for the past 26 years, mainly as a dominee for
the NG Kerk. It is truly a privilege to be part of
this strategically placed, vibrant and characterful
community. And it was another year of interesting
experiences and enriching relations with fellow
Grahamstonians.
Enkosi kakhulu, Rhini! Thank you very much,
Grahamstown! Dankie Grahamstad! Thank you
for good relations and communications on the
level of church activities, and being together in
spreading the good news of Jesus. Thank you for
sharing with us in the comfort of a loving God in
times of sadness and bereavement. We can do
so much more together, pooling resources and
joining hands.
IN GOOD FAITH... Bishop of
Grahamstown, Ebenezer Ntali
ordained candidates from the Dioceses
of Grahamstown and Ukhahlamba as
deacons and priests on Wednesday 16
December 2009, in the Cathedral of St
Michael and St George (middle photo).
In the top photograph, candidates are
Archdeacon Pumzile Mpumlwana. On
A blessed Christmas
for everyone
May I also, on behalf of the Afrikaans community,
extend warm greetings and compliments
to our Xhosa and English speaking friends. May
we always live together here in peace, goodwill
and mutual respect, as long as God wills, for the
benefit of all. Christmas is especially a time of
celebration for us, of the birth of the Saviour, Jesus
Christ. Ons glo Hy is die enigste ware God,
een met die Vader en die Heilige Gees. Hy is gebore
NEWS
SHARON RICHNER
The first Grahamstown Flower Festival on
7 and 8 November was a wonderful event
that attracted support from all sectors of
the community to create a friendly and vibrant
atmosphere in the Makana Botanical Gardens.
The array of colourful plants and flowers in
the SA Garden Marquee drew much admiration,
and the workshops and the Botanical Society’s
plant sale were well supported. Guest
speaker, Sheenagh Harris, drew a good turnout
of rose enthusiasts for her slide show, and then
officially opened the event at the prizegiving
with quiet dignity and humour.
The open gardens attracted large numbers
of people who enjoyed walking quietly around
the green havens created by the home owners.
Hands-On mission
proves successful
LOYISO DYONGMAN
Two American students
who visited Grahamstown
recently for an
outreach programme have accomplished
their mission and
returned home to the United
States.
Becca Knight of Williams
University and Lizzy
Bauman of Oauchita University
returned home on
Sunday after the successful
completion of the educational
programme conducted at Albany
Baptist church in Joza.
The programme, Hands-On,
is funded by the International
Missionaries Organisation
(IMO). It started in January
2008 aiming to educate school
children between Grades two
and seven.
The two students spent
four months in Grahamstown
teaching children from township
schools maths and English.
“We were sent here by
the Baptist church of America
to give tutorial lessons to the
children,” said Knight.
“The Baptist church felt
that children from the townships
were disadvantaged
and needed some extra
help especially in those two
subjects.”
The students said almost
all the schools from
the township attended their
programme and the children
showed a great response during
the period they spent with
them.
The learners attended
the lessons every day after
school. On completion of the
programme they were awarded
certificates and also given
some Christmas presents
GENEROUS SPIRIT... Becca Knight, one of the students
from America who conducted the Hands-On programme in
Joza, is safely back home in America after her four-month
stay in Grahamstown. Photo: Loyiso Dyongman
and stationery. Knight said
they would like to thank the 20
other American missionaries
who now live in South Africa
for their assistance, and also
the Rhodes University stu-
dents that attend the Baptist
church. The students said this
is an annual programme that
targets disadvantaged children
from around the world
including Asia and Europe.

Give those tyres a boost
Staff RepoRteR
Enough air? that’s the
question we should be
asking when we inflate
our tyres for the annual migration
coastwards over the
holiday season.
tyre manufacturer, Goodyear,
reminds motorists that
having the correct tyre pressure,
besides being a safety
issue and saving significantly
on wear and tear, also makes
a difference to your pocket.
Goodyear’s Automotive Engineering
manager, Peter
Henning, says running a tyre
just 20% under-inflated can increase
fuel consumption by as
much as 10%.
“An under-inflated tyre
deflects more energy, increasing
rolling resistance and
robbing the vehicle of fuel efficiency.
At today’s fuel prices,
and especially during this
holiday season when people
generally travel a lot further,
10% is a considerable and
unnecessary expense that
could be saved by a little more
Staff RepoRteR
Auto & General Insurance
is urging South African motorists
to take it easy on the
roads this festive season.
“traffic is dramatically
picking up on the highways
as people begin their crosscountry
commutes to holiday
destinations. We all need to
mind our manners, and manage
our emotions, to make our
roads a less dangerous place
to be this festive season,”
urges the company’s director
Angelo Haggiyannes.
Research shows South
African drivers to be among
the most aggressive in the
world. According to a report
earlier this year by international
market research company
Synovate – which has
been conducting research
into road rage since 2005 – one
fresh air.
“As well as being heavy on
your pocket, running underinflated
tyres also reduces
their tread life, which means
they will need to be replaced
sooner than necessary. Plus
it can be dangerous – studies
show that 87% of all flat tyres
have a history of under-inflation,”
Henning said.
Statistics also reveal that
one in every three cars has at
least one under-inflated tyre
and, while nearly seven in ten
drivers say they wash their
vehicles every month, only
just over half check tyre pressure
in that period. the majority
of drivers (71%) forget
altogether to check the pressure
in their spare tyre.
Dean Roberts, a spokesman
for Mastertreads, which
has been successfully servicing
motorists in the Western
Cape region for more than 50
years, said that in the interests
of safety, their outlets offer
free tyre inspections.
Hi-Q managing director,
Sean Harrison, said that over
Mind your manners on the
road this festive season
out of two South African drivers
have recently experienced
aggressive or threatening
driving behaviour. that’s half
of the vehicle-driving population.
the most common form
of road rage experienced by
South African motorists is
aggressive and threatening
driving behaviour or rude
gestures and verbal insults,
which have been experienced
by 51% of drivers.
Alarmingly, nearly one
in ten of the survey respondents
has been a victim
of another driver actually
leaving their vehicle to
demonstrate their anger. A
quarter of the respondents
admitted to using rude gestures,
flashing headlights
and hooting to indicate their
own anger.
Although the country has
Here are some tips for
avoiding road rage:
• Obey the rules of the road.
• Drive at the correct speed limit.
• Be courteous and considerate towards other drivers, remembering
that you’re all stuck in the same unfortunate traffic jam.
• Keep both hands on the steering wheel to prevent yourself
from making any gestures that might anger another driver.
• When you find yourself in a stressful driving situation, take a
deep breath and try to distract yourself from anger or frustration
by listening to the radio.
• Try to stay calm.
• If someone shows anger towards you, ignore it and do not
make eye contact.
• Give angry drivers lots of room. If another driver tries to pick
a fight, put as much distance between you as possible.
• Avoid using your hooter.
• Be honest with yourself about how you behave on the road
and keep your emotions in check.
www.grocotts.co.za
time, even normal driving
conditions affect steering and
suspension, which, in turn, affects
a vehicle’s wheel alignment.
“All four wheels, plus the
spare tyre, should be professionally
inspected before
a high rate of road rage, only
one in ten of the drivers in the
survey saw themselves as fast
and reckless drivers, and four
out of ten described themselves
as slow and cautious
on the road.
Interestingly, while the
fast and reckless are more
likely to direct aggressive behaviour
at other drivers, they
are also more prone to experiencing
road rage behaviour
from other motorists. Sixty
percent of the fast and reckless
drivers reported that
they’d experienced aggressive
and threatening behaviour
compared with 46% of the
slow and cautious drivers.
GOING UP... Participants in the SANDF Parachuting Championships board the Dakota TP 47, which made many trips
Jumping for champs
THe annual South african national
Defence Force (SanDF) Parachuting
Championships is currently taking place
in grahamstown, hosted by the 6 Sa Infantry
Battalion.
The event started on Sunday with
registration and, while jumping was
scheduled to start on monday, the action
got underway on Tuesday because the
plane arrived late.
Competitors each jump up to seven
accuracy jumps and four formation
jumps. a stick of 15 members at a time
board the plane, a Dakota TP 47, with
three runners made up of five people.
Once the plane has reached the specific
Stephen penney
eIgHT local basketball players are currently taking part in the
national basketball trials as part of the eastern Cape team. The
grahamstonians in the side consist of six men and two women.
The men are: Tisco mati, Sizwe magikwa, Thembani adam,
Sonwabiwe Lwana, Luzuko mothlapane and Walter Kayai, while
the two women are Sipho nkabini and nompelo Stuurman.
Amy Attenborough
ImagIne a sound like that of trumpeting elephants, jubilant
shouts of celebration, an army of green and gold and movement
that can be felt from afar. This was the sort of ‘vibey’
atmosphere experienced by onlookers when 3 000 Bafana
Bafana supporters showed up at the miki Yili Stadium to back
their national team during the Confederations Cup.
a mixture of young and old came together, despite the bitterly
cold weather, to watch South africa put in a momentous
effort against their rivals, Spain. Jeff Budaza, the 2010 Unit Coordinator,
believes it had a “unifying effect and got people who
don’t usually watch soccer to come”.
Despite the high attendance at the Public Viewing area
(PVa), Budaza does admit that it was really only the local
township folk that came. He said the typically “white” and
“coloured” areas were largely unaccounted for.
So despite the cohesive environment created, one really
needs to question how much PVa’s will help to bring the grahamstown
population and greater Cacadu District together.
Kerry mcKenzie, a Post graduate Certificate of education
student, believes that although PVa’s are a great concept, the
crowds are likely to be divided along economic lines.
On a local level some reasons for this could be that the
Cacadu District is battling to raise the funds to transport people
from the surrounding areas to grahamstown.
Budaza says the King Williamstown Department of Transport
has created a budget but the problem of accommodation
altitude and direction, five members
jump in quick succession, then the plane
circles, and the next five take the jump.
each of the 44 parachutists had a
practice jump in the morning, with the
competition beginning in the afternoon.
The event was comprised of accuracy
landing and formation skydiving.
For accuracy landing competitors had to
navigate their way to a large mat placed
on the military base sports field.
Points were awarded according
to the position in or around the block
where competitors landed. The formation
skydiving involved random manoeuvres
with two and three competitors
at a time. These jumps were each
filmed by a competitor and judged once
National basketball trials
on the ground.
Officer Commanding of 6 SaI,
Lieutenant Colonel martin gopane, who
is also taking part in the champs, said
the competition will continue until early
this afternoon. Yesterday’s jumping
came to an early end due to heavy winds
in the early afternoon.
gopane said that despite the weather
interruptions, the competition was
going well. The three members taking
part in the champs from 6 SaI are gopane,
Busani nxasane and Ruben Seabelo.
The prize-giving function will be held
this evening at the military base, where
individuals and teams will be awarded
trophies and medals.
Shortly before the start of the national trials, the local players
took part in a training camp in Port elizabeth, where they also
played a match against a veteran side.
The basketball players are members of the Rhodes University
Basketball Club and or makana Spears basketball club. Tisco
mati who is the makana Spears coach/player, said he feels that a
number of the local players stand a chance to be selected for the
national sides, which are scheduled to be announced today.
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK... A construction worker deals with
some finishing touches ontop of the Nelson Mandela Stadium
Organising Committee, the 2010 World Cup has created as
many as 150 000 temporary and permanent jobs thus far.
Public Viewing Areas – uniting the nation?
still exists.
Locals have also shown a reluctance to leave their cars
outside the stadium, while Joza residents such as melody Kulati
say they are worried about walking home after the games.
Kulati says, “It’s far from miki Yili to my house so I wouldn’t
want to go to the game if it’s dark.”
The top U17 cricketers were in town this week during the
annual U17 Cricket Week.
The tournament was made up of declaration, 50 over
matches and, for the first time in the U17 tournament, Pro 20
matches were played.
Three grahamstown cricketers are part of the eastern
Province team: Carl Oerson (graeme College), Ryan Dugmore
and Ian Herold (St andrew’s College).
gerald majola, chief executive officer of Cricket South africa,
said: “Remember that cricket is a sport where one’s individual
performance is there for the benefit of the team as a
whole and this is a wonderful opportunity to prove your worth to
the community effort.”
Dave emslie, CeO eastern Province amateur Cricket
Board, said, “grahamstown is a very special place for cricket in
the eastern Province. It has been the breeding ground for many
of our provincial and international cricketers.”
mtutuzeli nyoka, president of Cricket South africa, said the
national weeks are “the jewels in Cricket South africa’s crown
because they represent the prized progress of South african
boys and girls through cricket.”
Chairman of Sa Schools’ Cricket, Shaheed Khan, said the
tournament is “part of a pipeline from grassroots through to the
national cricket team that provides aspirant cricketers with the
opportunity to realise their full potential. Khan said the national
weeks also give players the opportunity to move beyond their
comfort zones and mix with players from different backgrounds
and to forge new friendships.
Teams taking part in the tournament were Boland, Border,
easterns, eastern Province, Free State, gauteng, griqualand
West, Kwa-Zulu natal, Kwa-Zulu natal Inland, Limpopo,
mpumalanga, northerns, north West, South Western Districts,
Western Province and Zimbabwe.
Late start to league
Stephen penney
THe makana Local Football association (LFa) metropolitan
League, scheduled to have kicked off weeks ago, will now only
begins in January 2010.
according to LFa secretary, Thandazile madinda, it was
decided at a recent meeting that the 2009/2010 league will now
only get under way in January, as many player sare away over
the festive season.
madinda said she hopes to get the league started during
the second weekend of January. The 15 teams making up the
metropolitan league will have less than two months to complete
two rounds, with each side playing 14 matches in each round.
madinda said matches will take place throughout the week as
well as on weekends in order to catch up and hopefully finish
in time.
meanwhile, makana Pillars beat Phoenix Pioneers in the
final of the pre-season soccer tournament which has been running
for the past few weeks.
Budaza however wishes to ease these concerns as he says
60 security personnel will be in and around the stadium at any
one time and will be adequately trained to keep the fans safe.
Budaza is also keen to implement a strong marketing strategy
as the PVa’s cost about R2.7 million to set up. The aim is thus
to fill miki Yili with a capacity crowd of 5 000 spectators during
the popular games.
Sayinile gregory, a grahamstown resident, says: “I’m really
looking forward to the PVa, but I just hope that it is better
supported than last time. I also hope it’s more effective in
bringing different people together to support our nation and
the spirit of the World Cup in general.”
PVA’s are defined as facilities that provide “a live broadcast of
any major sporting event and offer sufficient space for a number
of people to watch the game” . PVA’s were introduced to the FIFA
World Cup when Germany hosted the event in 2006.
They were a massive success with about 18-million people
visiting the official fan parks throughout Germany.
They are important in that they provide opportunities for the
promotion of a new public sphere as well as increased interaction
between citizens and urban areas.
The problem in South Africa however, is that legacies from
the apartheid era make it difficult to bring continually segregated
urban spaces as well as South African society together.
