Using Toyota Prius cars, Google will begin driving around South Africa and taking photographs of locations in and around major cities, so the Google vehicle was recently spotted in Port Elizabeth. Street View is a hugely popular feature of Google Maps that is already available in more than 100 metropolitan areas around the world. It allows users to virtually explore and navigate a neighbourhood through panoramic streetlevel images. It is also available in Google Earth and on Google Maps for Mobile. The collected images will be processed and carefully stitched together, a technological process that can take several months. These will be made available at a later date in Street View on Google Maps for South Africa. In areas where Street View is available one can access street-level imagery by zooming into the lowest level on Google Maps, or by dragging the orange Pegman icon on the left-hand side of the map onto a blue highlighted street. Internet users can check out a restaurant before arriving, make travel plans, arrange meeting points, or get a helping hand with geography homework. Househunters can save time by exploring properties and their surrounding area in advance and also by looking up driving directions. Businesses can also benefit from the Street View technology by embedding Google Maps directly into their site for free, helping them to promote a chain of hotels or raise awareness about a local library or restaurant. Andrew Kirby, Toyota’s senior vice president for sales and marketing said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Google and supplying our fuel efficient and environmental friendly Prius for this groundbreaking project in South Africa. South Africans and international visitors alike will benefit tremendously from Street View, which is both fun and practical. We hope that people across South Africa’s major cities keep their eyes peeled for the Street View cars, and feel part of a major new initiative.” Marthinus van Schalkwyk, the Minister of Tourism commented on the initiative. “The internet is a remarkably rich resource for raising awareness about South Africa - our people, our cities and our environment. Street View is going to make South Africa more accessible both to locals and to international visitors. “Thia will give tourists a taste of the variety that the country offers, and a chance to research their holidays in advance, all with the click of a mouse. “Ahead of the World Cup, we’re pleased to have Google bringing us some of their most innovative technology so that we can showcase South Africa to the world.” Roshene Singh, chief marketing officer at South Africa Tourism added, “Street View is a great tool for exploration and tourism, and a way to highlight South Africa’s urban buzz and scenic beauty. “As South Africa gears up for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, football fans around the world will either wish they were here, or will be on their way. Today’s racing starts at 12.30pm with the men’s B finals and ends with the novices finals at 3pm, 3.30pm and 4pm. Tomorrow’s action gets underway at 10.50pm with the men’s plate finals, followed by the women’s plate finals at 11.30am. 11.50am is the women’s B finals, 12.10pm – men’s B finals; 13.50pm - women’s plate finals; 2.10pm – men’s plate finals; 3pm – women’s finals; 3.30pm – men’s finals. Prizegiving will take place at 4.30pm. SATURDAY, 12 SEPTEMBER The annual Salem Family 6-a-side cricket tournament takes place from the Salem Cricket Grounds, with the first matches taking place at 8.30am. The families taking part are the Amms, Biggs, Brothertons, Emslies, Hobsons, Kings, Longs and Wilmots. There will also be a potjiekos competition. Comrades entries update Stephen penney SINCE entries for the 85th anniversary of the Comrades Marathon opened last week, the CMA office has been a hive of activity. As of yesterday, the entry number stood at 4 425. Entries for previous Comrades finishers, capped at 15 000, close on 31 october. on 1 November, entries will open for novices and will close on 30 November, capped at 5 000 athletes. Runners may enter now, and submit a qualifying time and their 2010 license details to the CMA offices at a later stage. The majority of entries received has been via the website www.comrades.com, and at Mr Price outlets. 11 September 2009 Cricketers develop their talent Stephen penney The Rhodes University Cricket Club held its first round of cricket trials for previously disadvantaged schools in Grahamstown, with about 40 youngsters taking part on the first day. The pupils were separated into U14 and U17 sections. Rhodes cricket club development officer, Siqamo Laphu said the standard of cricket was very basic and “most of the kids had never been really coached before”. Due to the club working with limited resources and only a few coaches, they decided to focus only on the U17 pupils “for the development project to be effective and to be able to get to every kid”. From the original trials, 18 children were chosen from Mary Waters Secondary School and Archie Mbolekwa Primary School. The learners have been to a number of practices with the Rhodes cricket club coaching team. Laphu said that while they have begun with very basic skills he believes the club will nurture them until they become good players. The project is currently in the final stages as far as the coaching is concerned, with 13 pupils taking part in the final week. Laphu said they hope that officials from Eastern Province Cricket will attend one of the coaching sessions. The cricket club also plan to hold cricket matches against other local schools for the development side. Ruwayne Brooks of Mary Waters said the coaching clinics have helped him a lot and it was also exciting as they got to meet players from other schools. Siphamandla Mfabana of Mary Waters said he felt great to be part of the coaching clinic and he learnt “so many skills”. Mfabana did not play cricket at school but got involved on hearing about the coaching clinics offered by the Rhodes cricket club. Laphu said that while only two schools have taken part in the project, he encouraged school teachers to contact him if they have any talented cricketers “who can beef up the squad at this late stage”. During day two, Dillon and hulley stopped at the first school during their trip. “A little tiny junior school with about 150 students and the nicest teachers,” said hulley. The two gave a talk to the pupils about the importance of reading and literacy and handed over a number of books, before heading out the school grounds “followed by the entire school running out behind us”. The two spent the second night on a farm outside Queenstown and the GRAhAMSToWN Brumbies travel to Uitenhage tomorrow for the club’s final match of the season, when they face Spring Rose rugby club from Port Elizabeth. The match is a promotion/relegation match for the Super League Grand Challenge and Adams Cup leagues. Spring Rose finished bottom of the Grand Challenge league and Brumbies finished third in the Adams Cup so they will face Spring Rose for an attempt to once again make the Grand Challenge league. The top two finishing sides in the Adams Cup were automatically promoted to the Grand Challenge. The promotion and relegation match was scheduled to take place last week but was postponed due to the British Airways Mighty Elephants match in Port Elizabeth. Brumbies were scheduled to play Kwaru rugby club for the third and fourth playoffs, but Kwaru did not take part in the match and so Brumbies were automatically awarded the points, finishing third for the season. Brumbies manager, Giuliano Flotman said this is the last chance for Brumbies to make the higher league. he says although they got off to a good start for the season, they were lying top of the log at the end of the first round but fell apart in the second round. Flotman said the players have been working hard to be able to make the Grand Challenge league for the next season. Stephen penney IT’S time to get your trainers out and celebrate spring and heritage month by taking part in the annual Wimpy heritage Day Challenge, organised by Kingswood Junior School. The event, a 10km and 5km fun run/walk, takes place from the Kingswood College City Lords rugby field on Sunday, 20 September, starting at 8am. Entry forms are available from Wimpy and Albany Sports at Pepper Grove Mall, while entries will be accepted on the day of the race from 7am. The main sponsor is Wimpy with the subsidiary sponsors being Kenrich Motors, Penny Pinchers and third was spent in Aliwal North. By the end of day three the two had cycled up Nico Malan pass (12km), Penhoek pass (6km), and the Fish River valley. “We have climbed approximately 1 000m from Grahamstown and we had a huge celebration today at the top of Penhoek Pass as it is the highest we will be the whole trip – 1844m above sea level,” said Dillon. “Weaving down a road littered with potholes, dodging 10 ton trucks and sweating profusely has been the sum total of the last two days’ cycle,” said Dillon, speaking of days four and five. The guys spend the fourth night in Zastron, where they knocked “on a complete stranger’s door” and PG Glass – sponsoring water tables along the route and at the finish. Race organiser, Ian Knott-Craig said they are hoping for 600 runners. Last year the event raised R8 500 which went to Little Red Dragon School and Eluxolweni Street Shelter. Money raised from this year’s event will once again be given to local charities. The route for the 10km athletes is the same as in previous years, taking athletes along Park Road to Cradock Road, past the Grahamstown Golf Course, behind the military base and back to the school. “It is a wonderful opportunity for the family to get out early in the morning as they challenge one another. *** were invited to stay the night. The following evening they stayed over in Wepener. “on the Friendship Cycle we have met amazing people. The term help us help others has been amazingly exercised over the past two days as fellow South Africans have stretched out their arms, pulled us in and kept us safe from the cold night outside. It makes us proud to fly that beautiful South African flag along with us,” said Dillon. on Tuesday the two arrived in Ficksburg, after a 60km cycle from Ladybrand. They then cycled to Bethlehem on Wednesday where they stayed for two days, after cycling a day ahead of schedule. Entry is R10 for anyone competing in either the 5km or 10 km challenge and all finishers will receive medals. Prizegiving will take place at 10.30am, while there are many spot prizes up for grabs. The men’s event record, set by Simphiwe Tana in 2007 is 32 minutes and 26 seconds, while the women’s record was set by Alexia Louizou last year, with her time of 41:05. The Kingswood Interact Club will be running a tuck shop and will also be selling burgers during the morning. The money raised there also goes to charity.
