News in brief
Murder accused appears
Busisiwe Cwala (29) the policewoman
accused of murdering her prosecutor
boyfriend appeared briefly in
the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court
on Tuesday. She is facing a charge
of murder. The case was postponed
to 15 September until when she
will remain in custody. The charge
against Cwala stems from a shooting
incident that claimed the life of
a state prosecutor based at the Port
Alfred Magistrate’s Court. Police
spokesperson Captain Mali Govender
said earlier this week that the
prosecutor was shot shortly after
9pm on Sunday. “When police arrived
at the scene, they found the
body lying face down in a pool of
blood in the doorway of the bedroom,”
said Govender. Cwala was
arrested at the scene. Police also
found and confiscated a 9mm pistol
and 13 live rounds of ammunition.
Toy gun robbery foiled
On Sunday, 6 September at 8pm,
an unknown man entered a Ncame
Street spaza shop and pointed a firearm
at the owner. The robber also
demanded R500 from the 37-yearold
owner, who managed to press
a panic button before the suspect
could rob him. The matter is still
under investigation and no arrests
have been made. In an earlier incident
last week, a 55-year-old man
was counting money before banking
it in his office. Police spokesperson
Captain Pumla Yobile said that
the man had R17 000 on the table
when three young men walked into
the office. “The complainant put
the money under the table. The
youngsters took out a firearm and
demanded the cash. He fought with
them and managed to take the firearm
only to find out that it was a
toy,” said Captain Yobile. A case of
attempted armed robbery is being
investigated. – KM
Car kills toddler
A 29-year-old male who was driving
a white and cream Isuzu Bakkie,
collided with a two-year-old child
arrived at the scene and the child
was taken to hospital. The police
then went to the hospital and were
informed that the child had passed
away. They are investigating a case
of culpable homicide. – KM
Armed robbers hit High Street business
LUVUYO MJEKULA
Two men pretending to be selling
jewellery entered a High Street
money-lending business and held
staff at gunpoint before fleeing with an
undisclosed amount of cash yesterday
morning.
When the robbers entered Kwik
Cash Loans and Financial Services
next to CNA at about 8am, two female
staff members, assistant manager
Zinziswa Mathondolo and consultant
Bukiwe Pongolo had just opened up.
They were cleaning their offices in anticipation
of their employers who were
expected to arrive later in the day.
The two women did not question the
two men who entered the office to show
them some watches and chains they said
they were selling. When they showed no
interest in buying anything, one of the
two men said he had more merchandise
in his backpack and pulled out a gun.
He rushed towards Mathondolo and
put the gun to her head and shouted
“Where are the safe keys, where is the
safe?” Mathondolo started trembling
and crying and the man told her aggressively
to keep quiet.
“Please bhuti, don’t kill me I’m
pregnant,” she pleaded with him. Mathondolo
is six months pregnant. She
said the men used cable ties to tie their
hands together. One of the men forced
Mathondolo to sit in a chair but moved
her away when he realised she was too
close to the window. “He tried to tie
me to the chair but the cable was too
short,” she said.
The other man forced Pongolo to
open the safe which contained a cash
box full of coins and a bag full of notes,
which they stashed in the backpack.
They had apparently planned to lock the
women in the toilet but could not find the
keys. Still visibly shaken, the women told
Grocott’s Mail that after hearing a big
bang as the door closed, they believed
that the robbers did not want them to
see how they escaped. Grocott’s learnt
that the men fled in a getaway car that
had been parked nearby.
“That’s when we came out and
pressed the panic button and phoned
the police,” said Mathondolo. She said it
was her first robbery experience since
she joined Kwik Cash in 2006.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Pumla
Yobile confirmed the robbery. When Grocott’s
Mail arrived at the scene, police
were still investigating. Police apparently
detained two men but the women
confirmed they were not the robbers.
Yobile said that no suspects had
been arrested but that the robbers were
believed to be foreigners as they could
barely speak English or Xhosa. They
have been described as being very dark
in complexion, one of them was dressed
in black while the other wore a blue and
white t-shirt. The robbery has brought
the business to a standstill. One onlooker
said he was surprised that there
were still businesesses that keep large
amounts of money on the premises.
per pipes had been stolen. Because of this,
water was spewing all over the campus.
Kamana added that the school has been
without a night watchman since the last one
retired in 2002.
“Hiring a night watchman is the duty of
the education department; filling of the post
has been on the school management’s agenda
for years now but to no success,” he said.
Nosisa Ntlangushe, who teaches Grades
8 and 12 at the school, complained that metal
recycling companies be dissolved in Grahamstown
because they “encourage theft of our
metals”. “We’ll continue to lose our metal for
as long as there are people who buy stolen
metal,” she added.
Grade 11 learner Lifa Gedze said the
break-ins have seriously hampered the functioning
of the school as they have lost teaching
equipment and documents. “It disrupts
lessons because now we are not in class due
to the burglary,” he added.
Education department spokesperson
Loyiso Pulumani said they are concerned
about the burglaries at the school as it is state
property which is being stolen or damaged.
He added that the hiring of nonteaching
personnel such as security
guards is provided “in a standard
fashion as and when there is availability
of funds”.
“The establishment of the Community
Policing Forum also assists
in this regard as it helps unite the
communities to be able to attend any
unawful trespassers in our schools,”
he explained. “Additionally, we have
asked the SAPS in this area to conduct
patrols during the night, this we
believe will help because if these culprits
are caught during these patrols,
they will have to face the law.”
Pulumani also said that the department
provides each school with
a maintenance budget which allows
schools to buy or replace the damaged
or stolen property. “Where the
damage is beyond their maintenance
budget the matter is reported to the
district for further or additional financial
assistance,” he said.

Child Health Week hits the road
From Page One
KABELO MASHEGO AND DARREN BOND
This week saw the launch of the annual
Child Health Week, a campaign that
provides healthcare for children whose
mothers find it difficult to regualrly visit a clinic.
The campaign will provide children under
the age of five years with Vitamin A, de-worming
and immunisations as well as growth monitoring
and will continue until 20 September.
On Tuesday, 8 September the campaign
water restrictions
MARIA SIBIYA
THE Makana municipal council
has decided to impose
water restrictions in Grahamstown
which will come to effect
on Monday, 14 September.
This is because when
the volume of water stored
in the system (comprising the
Jameson, Milner, Howison's
Poort and Settlers Dams) is
less than 40% of the total
consumption of the municipality
for the previous twelve
months, the council has to impose
water restrictions.
Municipal Manager,
Ntombi Baart states that the
decision is in accordance with
the Supreme Court Order of
29 January 1980, the National
Water Act (1980), the
Makana Municipality Water
Supply and Sanitation Services
include not being allowed to
use a garden hose and/or irrigation
systems as well as prohibiting
the washing of cars
using water from the municipal
supply system. However,
Baart adds that properties
Sewage leak has far reaching effects
JENNA BEYLEVELD
A SEWAGE leak near the
northern commonage in
Grahamstown is posing a potential
health hazard for residents
in the area.
Municipal spokesperson
Thandy Matebese says that
the leaks are being caused
by a lack of manhole covers.
People have been stealing
the copper manhole covers to
sell for scrap metal, leaving
the sewage pipes exposed.
“Kids throw bricks and other
things into the hole, and
this leads to blockages,”
Matebese says. It is because
of these blockages that the
sewage then overflows out
into the surrounding area.
However, clogging is not the
only side effect as long term
consequences may include
damage to the pipes, which
will require the replacement
of these expensive pieces of
equipment.
The municipality was not
aware of the leaks in the area
until Tuesday afternoon, but
Matebese says that the problem
of manhole cover theft is
an ongoing one. He adds that
the engineering department
is currently processing a request
for concrete manhole
covers, which should solve
the problem.
The environmental ef-
fects of the sewage leak are
also significant. The area
currently affected serves as
a commonage for those who
live in the surrounding area,
which encompasses Zion
Dam and Gxethu stream.
The commange is used for
activities such as growing
herbs for traditional medicine,
grazing for livestock
and a playground for the local
children.
Environmental Manager
for the Makana Municipality,
Ndumiso Nongwe, says
that the leak could cause
problems with underground
water pollution. “It is not just
a matter for the municipality,
the commonage plays a
vital role in the day-to-day
lives of the people who are
poor,” he says. The water
from the stream is no longer
fit to drink, and could lead to
disease. “The bacteria in the
water from sewage can cause
cholera,” he warns. Animals
that drink from the stream
could also be in danger, and
the health of the river will be
undermined.
the Kowie Catchment Campaign,
agrees. “If the amount
of sewage is too large, or the
leak happens too frequently,
there is a chance that the
ecological system will not
be able to fix itself, and irreparable
damage could be
done,” she says.
Matebese urges residents
to “not throw things
into open manholes and to
stop stealing the remaining
copper lids”.

Local artist joins the international mêlée
Staff reporter
Local artist, Sally Scott, has had three of her
works included in a prestigious exhibition
of African textiles that will be traveling to
Paris, France next week for the 15th Carrefour
European Patchwork Exposition.
The exhibition, entitled African Mêlée aims
to introduce unusual handmade processes, fabric
traditions and symbolic use of textiles on the
African continent. It will feature traditional African
textiles, highlighting the traditions and rituals
associated with these textiles, and will also
include the work of a selection of contemporary
South African fibre artists whose work reflects
their commitment and connection to this continent.
The theme, ‘Traditions, Magic, Rituals and
Heritage’ ensures that the work has been selected
in the context of heritage and it’s cultural
significance to African textiles.
Ancient handcraft traditions continue as living
heritage in large areas of remote Africa. The
exhibition will include many of these textiles;
from the women of Mali who use methods involv-
ing natural dyes such as mud and tree bark as well as fabrics, and the Fula tribe of West Africa
whose work contains traditional indigo stitch-resist patterning. The Mossi tribe of West Africa
will present vibrant coverings combining long thin strips, traditionally woven by men, and there
will be work from a talented Ugandan artist who transforms banana fibre into beautiful fabric.
In addition, there will be the
amusing Kanga cloths from
Zanzibar in East Africa which
communicate personal, political
and cultural messages.
The curator of the exhibition,
Celia de Villiers, an internationally
known South African
artist, Fine Arts lecturer
at Unisa and the founder of the
Intuthuko community embroidery
project, acknowledges the
significance of South Africa’s
contemporary fibre art and the
contribution these artists are
making to the African textile
tradition. For this reason, she
and her co-curators, Nicole
Shaw and Susan Haycock have
included select works from
embroiderers, bead workers
and fibre artists from around
the country.
Scott’s works, Axis Mundi,
Axis Mundi Reflected and
Desert Beauty form a part of
this collection. These and other
works may be viewed on her
website www.sallyscott.co.za
Liberty and Progress
Established 1870
Sadness and pride
In spite of the obvious success of this year’s Highway
Africa conference, the event was tinged with a mixture
of pride and sadness that had very little to do with the
conference itself. To understand what this means, our readers
should know that in the main foyer of this year’s meeting,
the organisers had taken the trouble to set up a special
exhibition dedicated to the memory of Madikane Jelu.
Madikane, a well-known Grahamstown photojournalist,
tragically passed away in April this year leaving behind
a huge vacuum in the Grocott’s newsroom. We asked
Madikane’s friend and Grocott’s Mail news editor, Luvuyo
Mjekula, to address the Highway Africa delegates and to tell
them about our loss.
In this way, journalists from all over the continent got to
see a small portion of the work Madikane had produced for
this newspaper, and they got to hear from a long time friend
how important he was in the scheme of things. We were sad,
but proud that we had known and worked with Madiks.
The sadness continues because this week Luvuyo will
also be leaving and he too will leave an enormous space that
will be very hard to fill. However, the reason for Luvuyo’s departure
fills us all with pride because he is going to take up a
senior position at the Cape Times.
Just over a year ago, Luvuyo was promoted to the post
of news editor, and since then has served this newspaper
and our community with dedication, goodwill and amazing
insight. His influence on the content of articles printed during
this period cannot be overestimated. He chaired the daily
diary meetings, guided reporters and students on how to approach
their assignments; he took part in all the decisions
that affected the front page and the editorials of this paper.
For these reasons and many more, we will be very sad
to see Luvuyo leave Grocott’s Mail, but at the same time we
are filled with pride that one of our own is about to make the
big time.
Grocott’s mail is published by the David Rabkin Project
for Experiential Journalism, a company wholly owned
by Rhodes University. The contents of this newspaper do
not necessarily represent the views of the either body.
I
have made many important decisions in
my lifetime. The two life changing decisions
to bring two wonderful children,
Chulumanco and Bukhobethu, into this
world required long and hard thinking.
But resolving to leave Grahamstown
and therefore Grocott’s Mail is probably
the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to
make.
Leaving behind a loving family like
mine can never be a joyful experience.
Saying goodbye to my mother, brothers and
my children is going to be a painful experience.
Bidding farewell to my other family
at Grocott’s is bound to be just as hard.
Hopefully there’ll be no tears.
Sure, I will meet new people and make
new friends in Cape Town. I’ll probably
even develop close bonds with my new
employers and colleagues at Cape Times.
But it’s not going to be the same.
Working at Grocott’s for the past three
years has been a helluva experience. Like
life, it’s been up and down. But I will take
with me mostly wonderful memories. Working
at Grocott’s has helped me grow, not
only as a journalist but also as a leader.
Winning an award in 2007 was the icing
on the cake. I’ve created close friendships
with many of my colleagues and Grocott’s
Mail readers.
In the office, we worked hard but also
had fun. The end-of-year parties we had
were great, although it seems I am leaving
(sadly) without tasting Steve’s promised
turkey. Steve, you’re not off the hook yet,
I’ll come back for that turkey even if it
means going AWOL!
There were some weird occasions. I
will never forget the sight of disgruntled
readers torching a copy of this newspaper
or an enraged subscriber storming into our
newsroom, shredding a copy of Grocott’s
Mail into pieces in reaction to our front
page photographs.
There were sombre moments. Losing
a friend and colleague in Madikane Jelu
Goodbye Grocott’s Mail, Grahamstown
Checkers don’t
know their fire drill
On Thursday morning, 3 September at
about 11am while shopping at Checkers, I
was appalled at the way the Checkers staff
behaved when the fire broke out at the Mr
Price in the Carlton Centre.
I was standing at one of the tills waiting
for my goods to be rung up when a group
of Checkers staff came running from the
back of the shop shouting “Everybody
out!” The shop was fairly busy and nobody
had a clue as to what was happening: was
there a fire, was there a bomb or was it
an attempted heist? The security guards
started closing the front doors leading to
the arcade making it difficult for people to
exit. There were screams of panic as most
people were trying to barge through the
doors before they closed. I waited at the till
until the cashier also joined the throng exiting
to the arcade and followed. Standing
just outside the entrance to the supermarket,
I could see a group of Checkers
personnel discharging fire extinguishers
into an area at the back of Mr Price.
Realising that there was no threat
within Checkers itself the cashier reentered
the store and I followed. She rang
up my goods, I paid and left.
I was traumatized, not by the fire but
by the very unprofessional way the Checkers
staff reacted and the fear they put in
everyone without any concern for their
customers. They definitely need some
serious training in this respect to prevent
crowd hysteria. They also need to make an
apology to the public for the way their staff
behaved and the fear they induced.
AJ reaches for his
dream
A brave four-year-old boy from Grahamstown,
AJ Gysman, who received a lifesaving
liver transplant earlier this year,
has had his dreams fulfilled by the Reach
for a Dream Foundation.
When Reach for a Dream arrived at
the door of AJ’s home, he was jumping up
and down with excitement. He could not
wait to get into the dream bus, but had no
idea where we were going with him and
his family. Inge and Michelle from Reach
for a Dream met up with Re/max Frontier
and the members of the Army and Air
force at the Army base in Grahamstown
on 2 September. To AJ’s delight, Re/max
Frontier presented him with a remote
controlled helicopter in army colours,
and the four year old was very impressed
with the controls and buttons! And then...
he heard the low drumming noise of
an approaching defence force helicopter,
and stood transfixed as the mighty
machine made its descent on the open
field. His excitement was palpable for
all of us! Captain Khuliso and his co-pilot
welcomed AJ and his father on board,
and the little boy was fascinated with the
earphones he got to wear in order to hear
the pilot’s conversations. It was truly a
earlier this year, dealt me and Grocott’s
a heavy blow. The passing of another
colleague Kirsty “Casey” Cordell, hardly a
month later, left me and the staff dumbfounded.
But as earlier stated, it was not
all doom and gloom.
I’ve been fortunate to work with two
great editors Steven Lang and Jonathan
Ancer who have taught me so much about
this important craft. I’d like to thank Grocott’s
Mail’s general manager Louise Vale
for believing in me.
But I must also say thank you to someone
who introduced me to the world of
practical journalism. Mike Loewe, my first
ever editor, shaped my journalism career
and I will be forever thankful. I am going
to miss the amazing relationships I’ve
developed with the many readers of this
important community newspaper.
But there comes a point in one’s life
when change is inevitable. This is most
likely the turning point of my career as a
journalist so I’m grabbing the opportunity
with both hands. It’s sad to say goodbye to
my small town of birth but I look forward to
a bigger city, bigger stories and an exciting
life.
Water test is a
scam
The letter “Alicedale’s water crisis”
(Tuesday, 8 September) needs some
clarifying. I am not concerning myself
whether Alicedale’s water is in crisis or
not, that is another issue.
What concerns me is the misleading
facts demonstrated by the salesman
from the water company, who has made
use of a so-called purity or precipitator
test.
He is supposedly trying to prove that
all water, except for the water produced
via his purification equipment, is impure
and subsequently unsafe for human consumption.
This demonstration is a scam.
What they are selling is a reverse
osmosis or desalination unit, which
removes most of the dissolved salts out
of the water. This water does not conduct
electricity. To conduct electricity, minerals
or salts must be present in the water.
Why does the water change colour?
Most forms of water, such as tap
water, contain minerals (electrolytes).
This will allow an electrical current to
flow through the water.
This, in turn, also allows the precipitation
and electrochemical reactions to
take place which discolours the water.
The change in colour can show up as
a grey precipitate, brown or red-brown
sludge. But such a colour change is
normal and expected.
Do not be lead to believe that this
colour change is an indication of impurities
in the water! Do not deter from
growing veggies, or brushing your teeth
with water. In closing, I can tell you
that many people in South Africa would
love to have a water with a TDS (total
dissolved solids) level of 485,mg/l(ppm)
and that the National Water Legislation
1998 Act 36 is certainly not a maximum
of 28ppm.
Please get your facts straight before
writing a letter. I am sure that you have
confused and mislead many unsuspecting
people.
Please Google: “Water test scam”
and read for yourself of the pit falls.
National Cleanup Week
Litter is a crisis! Messy and unsightly, it’s a reminder of an uncaring
spirit that permits in our external environment which we
would never allow in our own homes. But schools and community
members all around Grahamstown are ready to take up the
challenge to clean up litter in their areas – fi ghting fi lth through
a united front, spearheaded by Bulelani “Gaji” Magajana of
SAIAB (SA Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity).
Already, he has organised a clean-up day with teachers,
parents and learners of DD Siwisa and will be giving an educational
talk to about 150 people who will participate in the
clean-up at 11 am. Sponsors such as Coca-Cola have pledged
their support; and one of the teachers at DD Siwisa, Mr Njenje,
has also arranged for their ward councillor to give a talk to the
school on 18 September.
Also, staff and students of SAIAB, the Department of Ichthyology
and Fisheries Science and other departments at Rhodes
University are being encouraged to participate in a stream
clean-up along the stretch running from Somerset to South
Street (alongside African Street). Organisers hope to bring local
businesses such as Pick n Pay onboard, since their developments
tend to impact signifi cantly on local streams. SAIAB’s
communication manager, Penny Haworth, has issued a “cleanup
challenge” to other businesses beside a section of ‘Kowie
Ditch’– hoping to raise awareness that there is a stream practically
in their backyard.
As an organisation, SAIAB conducts research through the National
Research Foundation with the aim of promoting sustainable
aquatic environments in Africa, and also conducts school
outreach through its education unit, run by Magajana.
As a vibrant participant in Grahamstown’s community life,
the SAIAB’s activities in litter elimination are one more way
in which we too can all take part in making Grahamstown as
beautiful and functional as it can be.
Superbly Solar - enlightenment in Grahamstown
Going solar used to mean spending a fortune to purchase massive,
unwieldy panels that came with high production and labour
costs, as well as low effi ciency performance. But that era
of renewable energy is coming to a close and being replaced
by a lighter, cheaper, more fl exible model, thanks to thin-fi lm
PV cells.
This has created a revolutionised energy market, where
thin-fi lm solar cells can be placed on everything from your
house to your car to literally empower your life.
On Monday, 14 September, at 5.15pm, Prof Derck Schlettwein
of the Institute of Applied Physics, Justus Liebig University
in Giessen, Germany, will speak at the Chemistry Minor Lecture
Theatre at Rhodes University on the effi cient harvest of solar
energy and its transformation into electricity - new concepts
and materials. All are welcome to come and discover this eternally
renewable energy source.
TREES FOR LIFE... The Diocesan School for Girls donated
trees and fertiliser to Samuel Ntlebi Pre-Primary School in
celebration of National Arbour Week as part of an outreach
to assist disadvantaged schools in Joza. Sue Paton and
Sue Webber from DSG said that the idea was to teach other
schools about the value and signifi cance of trees in our lives.
They also saw this as a way for them to engage and get to
know other schools. The DSG Grade 8 learners got together
to share their knowledge of the environment with the Grade
3s and 4s at Samuel Ntlebi.
Tenjiswa Rwanqa, who teaches Maths and EMS at Samuel
Ntlebi, said they are happy and grateful to receive the donations.
“We are one of the most disadvantaged schools in the
community of Joza and it is a great feeling to be
recognised,’’ she said. Kate Whitehead, Sarah Croxton and
Louise Levick said they are keen to give back to the community
and help where they can. “We use the resources
available to us to enrich others for whom such resources are
not available,’’ said Sarah. Photo: Wazi Kunene
beneficiaries involved in a food programme. Starting with a
march from Chan Hendry General Dealers in Raglan Road the
procession will then gather at the Joza indoor sports centre in
Exension 6.
Umthathi also urges learners from various schools to submit
poems about food security. Community liason officer, Sicelo
Dyira says the programme aims to educate the community
about food security and create awareness about poverty. “We
want people to learn and observe about sustainable gardening
in the community,” he said. He also said that community members
who are interested are welcome to join in.
Roxbury Cinema is
screening My Sister's
Keeper this week and
there will be special screening
over the to raise funds
for a donation to be made to
Grahamstown Hospice. The
special screenings are on Saturday
12 and Sunday 13 September
at 5.30pm.
My Sister’s Keeper is a
film based on the best selling
novel by Jodi Picoult about a
family struggling to cope with
the fact that their little girl
has been diagnosed with cancer.
Johnny Kluivers, owner of
Roxbury Cinema, has a similar
story to tell. Kluivers lost
his sister Theresa to cancer
10 years ago and his family
received substantial support
from the local Hospice branch
which is why he has decided to
make this donation possible.
Hospice is a free facility
that cares for anyone who has
limited life expextancy due
to incurable illnesses such
as cancer, Aids and motor
neurone diseases regardless
of their race, religion or ability
to pay. Grahamstown Hospice
is currently caring for 64
patients and is funded by the
Department of Social Development,
the Department of
Health and local businesses.
REMEMBERED... The late Madikane Jelu’s elder brother Siphiwo and Grocott’s Mail news editor
Luvuyo Mjekula shake hands after a successful exhibition of the late freelance photographer’s
work. Photo: Steven Lang
Remembering a gifted journalist
Maria Sibiya
“He was
humbled,
passionate about
his work and
a watch dog to his government,”
said exhibition coordinator
Nqobile Buthelezi,
while referring to the late
Madikane “Madiks” Jelu
at a memorial exhibition of
his work at Eden Grove on
Tuesday.
Jelu passed away earlier
this year after contracting
pneumonia, leaving behind
his family, countless friends
and many members of the
community who relied on his
insatiable curiosity and concern
about their lives. Jelu
worked as a freelance photographer
providing material
for publications such as
Grocott’s Mail, Daily Sun,
Sowetan, Daily Dispatch
and Die Son. Journalists and
media practitioners from the
continent who attended the
Highway Africa conference
last week gathered to view
some of his work and learn
about his perseverance in the
media industry.
The exhibition included
photographs, tributes and
articles as well as poems
dedicated to the local legend.
Luvuyo Mjekula the news editor
at Grocott’s Mail, shared
his experiences and anecdotes
of the six years they
spent together as colleagues.
He praised him for his good
journalistic character. “As a
journalist, he was forward
and he was always where
the action was,” he said. He
also referred to Madikane as
a “perfect journalist” in the
sense that he although he
was not trained as journalist,
his journalistic instincts
were spot on. Mjekula said
Jelu, was known in his community
as Madiks or Mr Paparazzi
and knew people from
varying social backgrounds
including government and
court officials.
Moagisi Lethlaku who
represented Highway Africa,
shared that the exhibition
was a promise made to Jelu
before he passed away. “He
kept reminding us that we
have to display his work,” she
said.
Prof Guy Berger, who
heads the School of Journalism
and Media Studies at
Rhodes University, urged
journalists to learn from
Jelu as he was uneducated
but had what it takes to be a
great journalist. “Although
he was uneducated, he was
still a hero of journalism,”
said Berger. Jelu’s brother,
Siphiwo then offered his gratitude
on behalf of his family.
“We appreciate all the kindness,
we loved Madikane and
he left with us with broken
hearts,” he said.
The Jelu family were presented
with a gift, which was
handed over to Siphiwo by the
editor of Grocott’s Mail, Steven
Lang. The photographs
that were on show have been
given to the Jelu family and
some of the other material
will be exhibited in the Grocott’s
Street.
A scoop for Grocott’s Mail Online
ZiMkhitha Mbunge
Grocott’S Mail online
came out tops in the corporate
category of the 2009
SABC Highway Africa New
Media Awards held during the
Absa Africa Night Dinner at
the 1820 Settlers Monument
on Monday night.
The corporate category
was awarded to corporate
groups for creative and appropriate
adaptation of technologies
all over Africa to com-
pete effectively in the online
environment.
Grocott’s Mail online editor,
Michael Salzwedel says:
“One of the aims of Grocott’s
online is to fully embrace the
idea and practice of citizen
journalism. Grocott’s Mail
online does this by providing
an area, MyStory, on the website
where anyone can submit
their own content – words,
photos or video clips. We also
receives and publishes SMSes
and MMSes from citizens.”
On Tuesday, 8 September
Grocott’s Mail online
launched the Citizen Journalism
Newsroom, where
people who are not trained as
journalists can submit their
own content or be assisted in
creating and publishing their
own stories, pictures and
video clips.
“There should be a
number of reasons why the
judges recognise Grocott’s
Mail online as the winners
of the award, but using Grocott’s
Mail online to actively
encourage citizen journalism,
and thereby giving a platform
to all the people of Grahamstown
to express their voices
about issues that matter to
them and their communities
must be an outstanding
reason why the judges saw
it that Grocott’s Mail online
deserves the 2009 SABC
Highway Africa New Media
Awards,” said Salzwedel.
“Grocott’s Mail online in
its new form is still very young
– it was only launched on 2
July – so we’re very chuffed to
have received such a significant
pat on the back so early
on.” Salzwedel said: “It will
hopefully act as a catalyst and
take the site from strength
to strength. I’m hoping that
winning this award will help
to grow Grocott’s online
as a powerful platform that
the people of Grahamstown
can use to inform and be
informed”.
Grocott’s Mail online
does not only offer news in
story form, but also includes
picture galleries and video
clips.

GIVING JOY... The youth
of the Methodist Church
in Africa visited Home of
Joy last Sunday to donate
food to the 13 children who
reside there. "I am investing
in these kids so that I
can have someone to pick
me up when I do not have
the strength to go on," said
Margaret Ngcangca, the
manager of the home. The
President of the church
Vusumuzi Mbuli said, "We
do not possess silver nor
gold, but the name of Jesus
Christ." The children, who
are all of school-going age,
were also treated to snacks
and juice, courtesy of the
church. Photo: Asanda Naketi
Tourism to boost economic
development
SINIKIWE MQADI
Makana Municipality has a range of guided tours
lined up in celebration of Tourism Month in September.
Makana Tourism is informing the community
on what the region has to offer, which will allow citizens
to actively play an important part in building local tourism.
Some of the events are a tour of the Great Fish River Nature
Reserve (GFRNR) on Saturday, 12 September, a Heritage
and History Tour of Grahamstown East scheduled for
24 September and a ghost walk on 30 September.
These and others tours are subject to change and are
focused on the wildlife, vegetation and conservation aspects
in the area. The Chairman of the GFRNR, Mike Bandy said
that the aim of these events is to make Grahamstown more
visible to its people by providing more interesting information
about the city and its environs.
Tourism Month educates people as to the importance of
tourism for the local economy. Through travelling, people
contribute to the tourism industry and its competitiveness
as well as local economic growth and job creation.
In Grahamstown about 800 people are employed in the
tourism sector. The Director of Makana tourism Willem
Makkink said, “Supporting tourism creates much needed
jobs and drives local economic development,” he said.
Phone Makana Tourism on 046 622 3241 to make bookings or
for more information.
MUNICIPAL NOTICE
WATER RESTRICTIONS FOR
MAKANA MUNICIPALITY
The Makana Municipality’s Ordinary Council sitting held on 9 September
2009 resolved to impose water restriction in the Municipal
area. This is in line with the Supreme Court Order of the 29 January
1980, National Water Act (Act 36 of 1980), Chapter 4 numbers
26(1) (a), (g); 29(1) (i) and Chapter 5(37)92), 39(3) and Makana
Municipality Water Supply and Sanitation Services By-Laws.
Background:
Grahamstown draws water from Settlers Dam as well as do the
properties riparian to the catchment system. When the volume of
raw water stored in the system (comprising the Jamieson, Milner,
Howisonspoort and Settlers Dams is less than 40% the total consumption
of Makana Municipality for the previous twelve months,
the Council has to impose Water Restrictions of prohibiting the
use of garden hoses and the washing of cars with water from the
Municipal supply.
In addition, certain properties riparian to the catchment system
will be restricted on the volumes of water that they may extract. It
must also be noted that the complimenting of water from the James
Kleinhans works is also limited due to the capacity of the works
and the raw water supply in that system.
Restricted Activities:
• Use of garden hoses and irrigation systems
• Application for special permission to
water sport fi elds and registered nurseries may use handheld
hosepipe to water daily between 07h00 and 09h00 and 15h00 to
17h00.
• Washing of cars with water from the Municipal Supply System
Any person who contravenes the resolution shall be guilty of an
offence and, in addition to the person by whose act such contravention
is actually committed, the owner of the property to which the
water is supplied or, if such property is occupied by a person other
than the owners the occupier thereof shall be presumed also to have
committed such contravention unless it is proved to the satisfaction
of the court that he/she has taken all reasonable steps to prevent
such a contravention by any other person.
Penalty for contravention of restrictions:
A R200.00 fi ne per offence will be charged for people contravening
the restrictions.
Conclusion:
• The restrictions come to effect on 14 September 2009 to allow
maximum publicity of the Council Resolution.
• The Chief fi nancial Offi cer and the Technical and Infrastructure
Services Director have been delegated authority to review the
restrictions based on raw water supply in the Municipal systems
and until the restrictions are removed subject to monthly reports
being submitted to Council.
New E-Class successfully launched
The new E-Class has gotten off to a very successful start, with
more than 40 000 units delivered to customers since April 2009.
The station wagon will celebrate its world premiere at
this year’s Insurance Auto Auctions in September. The new
coupe is also extremely popular, with its dynamic design and
the new generation of efficient engines. About a dozen different
assistance systems are available to customers, including new
Mercedes-Benz developments such as Lane Keeping Assist
and Night View Assist. These technologies make the E-Class
a ‘thinking’ partner that can not only see, feel, and respond to
dangers by means of its reflexes, but also act independently to
prevent accidents or minimise the effects thereof.
The new E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY with direct injection
delivers 135 kW and consumes only 7.2 liters of gasoline
per 100 kilometers. This will be part of the new diesel engines
equipped with a twin-turbo, 2 143 cc engine delivering 150 kW
of power and 480 Nm of torque. This model will replace the
previous E220 CDI but the E350 CDI remains unchanged with a
nomenclature change from the E320 CDI. This V6 engine with
2 987 cc, delivers 170 kW of power and 540 Nm of torque.
What’s happening on the local market
Darren BonD
The Grahamstown branch of General Motors South Africa (GMSA)
has taken strain from the economic situation yet their new car
sales are averaging at around ten cars per month with the Corsa
utility being the most favoured. Used cars sales have increased
this year. The local Volkswagen (VW) branch has also seen a 10%-
15% downturn this year. The Polo is still the vehicle of choice and
there has been an increase in the number of customers trading
in their SUVs and double cabs for a second hand vehicle, Polos
in particular.
No more arrests for traffic officers
Kwanele Butana
Makana Municipality is
keeping mum on why
it has stripped all
traffic officers of their authority
to arrest offenders.
This follows hot on the
heels of a memorandum issued
to traffic officers last
month, a copy of which Grocott’s
Mail is in possession
of. “Traffic officers will with
immediate effect consult with
his/her senior and get the go
ahead/authority before arresting
an alleged accused,”
it reads.
Makana spokesperson
Thandy Matebese would not
be drawn into discussing the
issue as he said that the memorandum
was meant for internal
use only. “We don’t comment
on leaked information
because by so doing we would
be setting a bad precedent,”
he said.
While the memo claims
that no authority is taken
away from officers as they
are allowed to open a docket
when there is no admission
of guilt, they must supply the
control-room staff with the full
charges when requesting the
services of the police.
Rhodes University-based
the memorandum does not
break any law and is meant to
protect people’s rights so that
they do not get arrested for final
He assumes that the
was arrested “unnnecessarily”
and then took legal
action against the municipality
because of the “invasive”
nature of an arrest.
pampers occupants with its extremely
spacious accommodation and the comfort
of a luxury saloon. The GL-Class
sets another milestone with the Pre-
Safe® safety system, a first in the large
SUV market. The V8 engine powering
the GL 500 (pictured left) maintains its
maximum torque over a wide rev range.
High-torque, combustion-optimised
drive units and a chassis that delivers
outstanding handling and exceptional
comfort whatever the conditions make
the GL-Class as highly impressive on
road as it is off road. Despite a typically
off-road body with short overhangs, its
own, vibrant personality shines through.
Google gets down to street level
GROCOTT’S MAIL REPORTER
Google has started
gathering images of
South Africa for the
Street View feature in Google
Maps. Using Toyota Prius
cars, Google will begin driving
around South Africa and
taking photographs of locations
in and around major
cities, so the Google vehicle
was recently spotted in Port
Elizabeth.
Street View is a hugely
popular feature of Google
Maps that is already available
in more than 100 metropolitan
areas around the world. It allows
users to virtually explore
and navigate a neighbourhood
through panoramic streetlevel
images.
It is also available in
Google Earth and on Google
Maps for Mobile. The collected
images will be processed
and carefully stitched together,
a technological process
that can take several months.
These will be made available
at a later date in Street View
on Google Maps for South
Africa.
In areas where Street
View is available one can access
street-level imagery by
zooming into the lowest level
on Google Maps, or by dragging
the orange Pegman icon
on the left-hand side of the
map onto a blue highlighted
street.
Internet users can check
out a restaurant before arriving,
make travel plans, arrange
meeting points, or get a
helping hand with geography
homework. Househunters can
save time by exploring properties
and their surrounding
area in advance and also by
looking up driving directions.
Businesses can also benefit
from the Street View technology
by embedding Google
Maps directly into their site
for free, helping them to promote
a chain of hotels or raise
awareness about a local library
or restaurant. Andrew
Kirby, Toyota’s senior vice
president for sales and marketing
said: “We are thrilled to
be partnering with Google and
supplying our fuel efficient
and environmental friendly
Prius for this groundbreaking
project in South Africa.
South Africans and international
visitors alike will benefit
tremendously from Street
View, which is both fun and
practical. We hope that people
across South Africa’s major
cities keep their eyes peeled
for the Street View cars,
and feel part of a major new
initiative.”
Marthinus van Schalkwyk,
the Minister of Tourism commented
on the initiative. “The
internet is a remarkably rich
resource for raising awareness
about South Africa - our
people, our cities and our environment.
Street View is going
to make South Africa more
accessible both to locals and
to international visitors.
“Thia will give tourists a
taste of the variety that the
country offers, and a chance
to research their holidays in
advance, all with the click of
a mouse.
“Ahead of the World Cup,
we’re pleased to have Google
bringing us some of their
most innovative technology so
that we can showcase South
Africa to the world.”
Roshene Singh, chief marketing
officer at South Africa
Tourism added, “Street View
is a great tool for exploration
and tourism, and a way to
highlight South Africa’s urban
buzz and scenic beauty.
“As South Africa gears
up for the 2010 Fifa World
Cup, football fans around
the world will either wish they
were here, or will be on their
way. Street View will help all
of our visitors plan their trip,
or experience virtually what
South Africa has to offer, no
Cricketers develop their talent
Stephen penney
The Rhodes University
Cricket Club held its
first round of cricket
trials for previously disadvantaged
schools in Grahamstown,
with about 40
youngsters taking part on the
first day.
The pupils were separated
into U14 and U17 sections.
Rhodes cricket club development
officer, Siqamo Laphu
said the standard of cricket
was very basic and “most of
the kids had never been really
coached before”.
Due to the club working
with limited resources and
only a few coaches, they decided
to focus only on the U17
pupils “for the development
project to be effective and to
be able to get to every kid”.
From the original trials,
18 children were chosen
from Mary Waters Secondary
School and Archie Mbolekwa
Primary School.
The learners have been to
a number of practices with the
Rhodes cricket club coaching
team. Laphu said that while
they have begun with very basic
skills he believes the club
will nurture them until they
become good players.
The project is currently
in the final stages as far as
the coaching is concerned,
with 13 pupils taking part in
the final week. Laphu said
they hope that officials from
Eastern Province Cricket will
attend one of the coaching
sessions.
The cricket club also
plan to hold cricket matches
against other local schools for
the development side.
Ruwayne Brooks of Mary
Waters said the coaching clinics
have helped him a lot and
it was also exciting as they got
to meet players from other
schools. Siphamandla Mfabana
of Mary Waters said he felt
great to be part of the coaching
clinic and he learnt “so
many skills”.
Mfabana did not play
cricket at school but got involved
on hearing about the
coaching clinics offered by the
Rhodes cricket club.
Laphu said that while only
two schools have taken part
in the project, he encouraged
school teachers to contact
him if they have any talented
cricketers “who can beef up
the squad at this late stage”.
Cycling for the children
Stephen penney
RhoDES students James Dillon and
Tim hulley are well on their way to
harrismith after leaving Grahamstown
on 2 September by bicycle .
on the Friendship Cycle, the two
Rhodes University students aim to
promote literacy among the young
and underprivileged and to hand out
library books and reading material
along the way, ultimately handing over
a cheque to Mphophomo Combined
School in Van Reenen to go towards
the funding of a library room to store
their books
In his blog, Dillon said he was so
nervous the morning they left Gra-
Brumbies in critical match
Stephen penney
hamstown, that he felt ill. “It was the
most hilly country I’d ever been in,”
said Dillon as the two cycled 109km
for the first day and stopped over for
the night in Seymour. During day two,
Dillon and hulley stopped at the first
school during their trip.
“A little tiny junior school with
about 150 students and the nicest
teachers,” said hulley. The two gave a
talk to the pupils about the importance
of reading and literacy and handed
over a number of books, before heading
out the school grounds “followed
by the entire school running out
behind us”.
The two spent the second night on
a farm outside Queenstown and the
GRAhAMSToWN Brumbies travel to Uitenhage tomorrow for
the club’s final match of the season, when they face Spring Rose
rugby club from Port Elizabeth.
The match is a promotion/relegation match for the Super
League Grand Challenge and Adams Cup leagues. Spring Rose
finished bottom of the Grand Challenge league and Brumbies
finished third in the Adams Cup so they will face Spring Rose
for an attempt to once again make the Grand Challenge league.
The top two finishing sides in the Adams Cup were automatically
promoted to the Grand Challenge.
The promotion and relegation match was scheduled to take
place last week but was postponed due to the British Airways
Mighty Elephants match in Port Elizabeth.
Brumbies were scheduled to play Kwaru rugby club for the
third and fourth playoffs, but Kwaru did not take part in the
match and so Brumbies were automatically awarded the points,
finishing third for the season.
Brumbies manager, Giuliano Flotman said this is the last
chance for Brumbies to make the higher league. he says although
they got off to a good start for the season, they were
lying top of the log at the end of the first round but fell apart
in the second round. Flotman said the players have been working
hard to be able to make the Grand Challenge league for the
next season.
IT’S time to get your trainers
out and celebrate spring and
heritage month by taking part
in the annual Wimpy heritage
Day Challenge, organised by
Kingswood Junior School.
The event, a 10km and
5km fun run/walk, takes
place from the Kingswood
College City Lords rugby
field on Sunday, 20 September,
starting at 8am. Entry
forms are available from
Wimpy and Albany Sports at
Pepper Grove Mall, while entries
will be accepted on the
day of the race from 7am.
The main sponsor is
Wimpy with the subsidiary
sponsors being Kenrich Motors,
Penny Pinchers and
third was spent in Aliwal North. By the
end of day three the two had cycled
up Nico Malan pass (12km), Penhoek
pass (6km), and the Fish River valley.
“We have climbed approximately
1 000m from Grahamstown and we had
a huge celebration today at the top of
Penhoek Pass as it is the highest we
will be the whole trip – 1844m above
sea level,” said Dillon.
“Weaving down a road littered
with potholes, dodging 10 ton trucks
and sweating profusely has been the
sum total of the last two days’ cycle,”
said Dillon, speaking of days four
and five. The guys spend the fourth
night in Zastron, where they knocked
“on a complete stranger’s door” and
PG Glass – sponsoring water
tables along the route and at
the finish. Race organiser, Ian
Knott-Craig said they are hoping
for 600 runners. Last year
the event raised R8 500 which
went to Little Red Dragon
School and Eluxolweni
Street Shelter. Money raised
from this year’s event will
once again be given to local
charities.
The route for the 10km
athletes is the same as in previous
years, taking athletes
along Park Road to Cradock
Road, past the Grahamstown
Golf Course, behind the military
base and back to the
school. “It is a wonderful opportunity
for the family to get
out early in the morning as
they challenge one another.
***
were invited to stay the night. The
following evening they stayed over in
Wepener.
“on the Friendship Cycle we have
met amazing people. The term help us
help others has been amazingly exercised
over the past two days as fellow
South Africans have stretched out their
arms, pulled us in and kept us safe
from the cold night outside. It makes us
proud to fly that beautiful South African
flag along with us,” said Dillon.
on Tuesday the two arrived in
Ficksburg, after a 60km cycle from Ladybrand.
They then cycled to Bethlehem
on Wednesday where they stayed
for two days, after cycling a day ahead
of schedule.
Heritage Day fun run
one could also challenge
friends, neighbours, business
partners, anyone to participate,”
said Knott-Craig.
Entry is R10 for anyone
competing in either the 5km
or 10 km challenge and all
finishers will receive medals.
Prizegiving will take place
at 10.30am, while there are
many spot prizes up for grabs.
The men’s event record,
set by Simphiwe Tana in 2007
is 32 minutes and 26 seconds,
while the women’s record
was set by Alexia Louizou
last year, with her time of
41:05. The Kingswood Interact
Club will be running
a tuck shop and will also be
selling burgers during the
morning. The money raised
there also goes to charity.
