Racist student identifi ed
The student who made racist comments
to Rhodes Journalism Prof
Fackson Banda and his family
while the were driving down South
Street over Inter-Varsity weekend
has been identified. After an extensive
anti-racism campaign at the
university, a fellow student came
forward to identify the student who
was responsible. He has since admitted
his guilt and is remorseful
of his actions. Deputy vice chancellor,
Dr Sizwe Mabizela said they
will not disclose his name as the
university wants to emphasise the
educational aspects of the incident.
The university’s disciplinary committee
have said they will not expel
the student, instead he is to write
letters of apology to both Banda
and the Vice Chancellor, Saleem
Badat and conduct community
service. – THYLA NEL
12-year-old
murdered in Joza
MARIA SIBIYA
AND SARAH-JANE BRADFIELD
A 12-year-old boy died in Joza on
Wednesday after he was robbed and
stabbed, allegedly by a group of school
boys. The incident took place near the
Ethiopian Church in Ncame Street.
One of the residents, who preferred
to remain anonymous, said the
boy crawled to her house and knocked
on the door while clutching his chest,
then collapsed and died on her doorstep.
“These boys are killing our children
for nothing,” said the resident,
who also said that when the suspects
are found, they should be put to death
for the heinous crime.
When Grocott’s Mail arrived in
Joza, police and angry residents
were searching for the suspects
in neighbouring houses in L and
M Streets where they thought they
could be hiding. Confl ict broke out
when residents accused each other
of hiding potential suspects in their
houses. There was tension in the
air while the police searched nearby
areas. “If you are hiding suspects
in your house, we’ll burn it down!”
shouted angry residents. Police arrived
at the scene and arrested the
boy who was heard shouting: “I’ll be
back!” to the residents.
Vukani residents get violent and vocal
THYLA NEL
Last Wednesday a group of
irate Vukani residents gathered
outside the Grahamstown
Magistrate’s Court for the release
of Mxolisi Phunga Phunga and
Kwenzekile Nonesi. The two men
were arrested for assaulting two
murder suspects, Ayanda Mthwala
and Luthando Klaas.
Mthwala and Klaas were arrested
in connection with the murder of
Gideon Nikelo and subsequently released
on R500 bail in June. However,
since then the residents have accused
Mthwala and Klaas of continuing to
commit crimes, and decided to take
the law into their own hands.
Last Sunday the same group of
around 50 residents gathered outside
Klaas’s house, trying to force
them to leave Vukani.
The residents say they had approached
the police beforehand to
warn Mthwala and Klaas that they
are not welcome in the community
any more and they should leave.
“The police tell us we cannot take
the law into our own hands and there
is nothing we can do,” says Vukani
resident Fikiswa Maqaunda. “We are
not satisfied with that answer.”
“We told them we want them
to leave but they got violent,” says
Michael Nikelo, brother of the deceased,
Gideon Nikelo. The police
arrested Mxolisi Phunga Phunga
and Kwenzekile Nonesi for allegedly
assaulting Mthwala and Klaas.
The two appeared in court last
Wednesday on charges of assault.
Incensed, the residents embarked
upon a police escorted protest at 9am
LOCK THEM UP... Vukani residents sing and dance while protesting outside the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court
on Wednesday. The residents have grown tired of crime and violence in their area. “We want to justice to be
done and the criminals be kept in jail,” says Fikiswa Maquanda. Photo: Thyla Nel
on Wednesday morning from Vukani,
ending up outside the magistrate’s
court. “We are marching for the
release of Mxolisi and Kwenzekile
because we believe that there is no
case as they were first provoked by
the killers,” says Michael.
It turns out that Ayanda Mthwala
has had a history of run-ins with the
law. “He was charged with murder
in 2004 and again in 2006, the cases
were both dropped due to insufficient
evidence,” says Inspector
Maleki of the local police.
After the police broke up the dispute
at Luthando’s house, Mthwala
only pointed out three suspects:
Michael, Phunga Phunga and Nonesi.
However, Michael was not taken
in but Phunga Phunga and Nonesi
– who are both eyewitnesses in the
alleged murder of Gideon Nikelo –
were arrested.
Vukani residents first protested
outside of the Grahamstown Police
Station on Monday. “We are protesting
because we are tired of crime in
our area!” says Patrick Mbuyane, a
Inspector Sherolene Williams
from the SAPS communications and
also opposed Mthwala’s bail but as
we explained to the community once
STEVEN LANG
CRIME statistics released this week
by the Minister of Police, Nathi
Mthethwa, clearly indicate that crime
is still rampant, both nationally and in
the Eastern Cape. Bobby Stevenson,
DA leader in the Eastern Cape legislature
said that the latest stats reflect
good and bad news for the province.
He said “The real shocker is that robbery
at residential premises is up by
128% and robbery at businesses is up
75%.” This means that criminals are
now targeting people while they are
still in their homes. Stevenson said,
“criminals are becoming brazen, and
do not fear arrest.”
In the latest reporting period,
cases of robbery with aggravating
circumstances have increased from
8 951 to 9 814 in the Eastern Cape.
While the stats released this
week only refer to the national and
provincial situations, it is certain
that Grahamstown is following the
Eastern Cape trend. Recently there
has been a growing number of robberies
where criminals have used
firearms to force citizens to give up
their possessions.
There has also been a significant
increase in car hijackings in the
province. In April 2003 to March 2004,
just over four hundred cars were hijacked,
but in the most recent year
this number has skyrocketed to 706.
On the positive side Stevenson
said, “The fact that reported crimes
of the driving under the influence of
alcohol and drugs has increased by
48% is a reflection of good police work
in nailing drunken drivers and the
SAPS must be commended for this.”
The table above left is a summary
of crime statistics for the Eastern Cape
that was released earlier this week.

RDP houses
cracking up
The dirt roads in Vukani are full of pot-holes and have
been mostly washed away by heavy rains. Every
Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP)
house has at least one major structural crack and
some are crumbling under the weight of their own
roofs. Loose bricks loom over doorways, threatening
to tumble onto toddlers playing below.
From Page One
Michelle soloMon
the houses in Vukani are
only six years old, but
they are falling apart.
Worth a collective R14-million,
the last of the RDP houses
were completed in 2003.
Many of the hundreds of
houses have loose cement
blocks looming over doorways,
and in some places
cracks have caused the wall
to disintegrate above the door
so that the wall swings loose.
Residents have been continously
complaining about the
conditions of the their homes
for well over a year. a Vukani
mother is particularly concerned
that the loose bricks
above her front door will fall
down and perhaps fatally injure
her young children.
Michael Whisson, a Democratic
alliance (Da) municipal
councillor, says that it is
the municipality's responsibility
to ensure the sustainability
and safety of these
homes. this was confirmed
by Kaiser nxamleko, a senior
official at the housing department.
However municipal
media spokesperson, thandy
Matebese, denies that the
municipality is responsible,
citing that the matter can
only ne resolved on provincial
level.
negotiations for the
Vukani housing project started
around 1999, with the houses
being completed in late
2003. after the most recent
complaints from residents,
Grocott’s Mail has identified
several layers of negligence
and mismanagement that
has occurred over the last ten
years. according to municipal
officials, this ranges from
flawed provincial policy, all
way down to theft of building
supplies by local labourers. in
March 2008 the municipality
gave assurance that something
would be done. a year
later, the situation has only
worsened following the october
2008 tornado and the
further degradation of these
homes, neither of which has
led to any substantial improvement
in the living conditions
for Vukani residents.
Fikiswa Maqanda lives
in a broken down home with
her father thamsanqa, who
is hard of hearing. she says
that nothing has been done
to repair the damage to the
house, which includes 3cm
wide cracks in a low-bearing
wall, and an interior wall
that sways in the breeze. the
Maqandas have tried to stabilise
the interior wall using
nails and rusty wire.
their neighbour, adam
Mosala, has also lodged complaints
about his home. “the
roof leaks water onto our prepaid
meter, and i'm worried
that my children will be electrocuted
one day,” he says.
“i went to the municipality to
ask for help, and was told that
i should leave because i got
the house for free.”
another problem in the
area is the poor layout of the
district as a whole, with the
houses cutting into the hillside
instead of following its
contours. this means that
rainwater is directed downhill
into many homes, causing
further damage. this is exacerbated
by a lack of stormwater
drains and guttering,
making heavy summer rains
and flooding potentially hazardous.
the national housing
project has aimed to provide
the many south africans living
in informal settlements
with adequate housing. according
to the national Constitution,
if a person doesn't
have anywhere to live, it is
that person’s right to have access
to government housing,
but to the dismay of low-cost
housing beneficiaries nationwide,
housing departments
are not even meeting the national
standards.
News
Globalisation is not as
beneficial as we are led to
believe it is. While the rich
keep getting richer, the poor
still struggle to gain access to
the basic necessities needed
to survive. this is according
to Prof Peter Vale, the nelson
Mandela Chair of Politics at
Rhodes University.
speaking at the third annual
neil aggett Memorial
lecture at Kingswood College
on Wednesday, Vale said
economic globalisation was
one of the greatest ideas of
our time. However, although
the word personifies the idea
of human progress, it has created
a picture of a world that
doesn’t really exist.
Vale said that in a world of
economic globalisation there
is no room for social justice,
despite arguments to the contrary.
He said that people who
support economic globalisation
claim that it benefits everyone
according to Vale, “the
richest 1% of people in the
world receive as much
while rich families earn more
money and their quality of life
has improved, poor people
find it difficult to access the
medicine and technology that
could improve the quality of
their lives. Furthermore, not
only has the income gap between
rich and poor people
grown as a result of economic
globalisation, it has also
grown between countries.
“We lead and others follow”
Vale also said that although
people often claim
that globalisation is not controlled
by any person, institution
or government, it is.
He said that institutions like
Grocott’s Mail Friday, 25 September 2009
Did you know that National Heritage Day is also
National Braai Day and how will you be celebrating it?
National Heritage Day also known as National Braai Day was celebrated on 24 September and it is. So Grocott’s Mail reporters Asanda
Naketi, Michelle Solomon, Maria Sibiya and Sarah-Jane Bradfield asked locals how they were planning to celebrate the day.
Bobo Natural
Entertainer
I will be braaing some
fi sh and corn bread. We
will also be playing some
music and beating bongo
drums.
Sonwabo Maki
Salesman
I heard it on the radio that
Heritage Day is also
National Braai Day, I will
be with my family braaing.
Nomakhaya Bill
I won’t be braaing. I will
either go to JD Dlepu or
Miki Yili stadiums for Heritage
Day celebrations.
Denise Lesar
I will braai steak and
chops, I will be also be
watching some cricket.
Siyamthanda Msezeni
Student
I didn’t know about
National Braai Day until
yesterday when I saw it
on TV and I thought it was
just an advertisement.
I didn’t know it is also
National Braai Day. I will
be drinking the whole day,
Great ideas for
National Braai Day
ASANDA NAKETI
The typical South African braai of boerewors and chops may
leave vegetarians and vegans feeling like they have to take
a back seat. But this need not necessarily be the case as
there are lots of healthy and tasty meat-free goodies you can slap
on the braai.
It is of course best to keep one half of the braai grid meat-
free so you have room to experiment. Remember that fruit and
vegetables should be cooked over a gentle heat so keep the coals
cool and not too hot.
Skewered red, green and yellow peppers appeal to most palates
and sweet potatoes also are a good option. “Sweet potatoes
are quicker to cook than potatoes and are much healthier,” says
a great fan of the veggie braai, Anna-Karien Otto. She says when
you wrap sweet potatoes in tin-foil and lay them among the coals
you don’t need to add anything else because “they cook in their
own natural ‘honey’ marinade”.
Check if they’re soft by prodding with a fork, open up and
serve with lashings of butter and cinnamon. Braaied mealies are
also particularly good. Keep their jackets on, soak in water for a
few minutes and braai as is. The leaves slowly burn, causing the
corn to caramelise. You can then baste them with a mix of garlic,
chilli and butter. Place a dollop of butter onto each of the pipinghot
mealies and serve.
Although dessert is not often a priority or even a necessity at
a braai, forget the ubquitous jelly and custard and get creative.
Try splitting open bananas and stuffi ng them with dark chocolate
and marshmallows. Keep the skin on and place over a cool
fi re. Chragrilled pineapple is also scrumptious and is really tasty
served with chopped mint. Almost any fruit can be braaied and
children love it, especially when served with ice cream and adults
who have never tried it will be more than impressed.
Firm fl eshed fruits can be skewered and served as kebabs
and softer fruits can be loosely wrapped in foil (you can even add
some liqueur!) and cooked as little parcels. Serve any of these
with yoghurt, ice cream or soya cream.
A braai is not just about the food though, it is fi rst and foremost
an opportunity for the family to gather around the fi re and
watch the sun go down, putting the world to rights over a beer or
a glass of wine and cuddling up under a blanket while your meal
is cooked right under your nose.
Various local youth
structures gathered at
Noluthando Community
Hall last Friday to discuss
the plans of the youth council
summit and elect a new committee.
The youth council summit
consists of young people from
various Grahamstown structures
such as high schools,
tertiary institutions, religious
structures, political organisations,
Wards 1 to 12, sports
councils and the Makana Arts
Council.
The purpose of the summit
is to provide an overview
of the events and reports of
the previous year and elect
new leaders.
Deputy secretary, Luzuko
Buku read the resoulution of
the youth council summit and
then everyone was given an
opportunity to ask questions
and comment about the purpose
of the committee.
Commenting on the report
under discussion, Lindikhaya
Ceya from Ward 7 says, “Last
year the government concluded
that 80% of jobs and tenders
by the municipality are
supposed to go to Grahamstonians
and not people from
outside, but I haven’t seen
that happening.”
Makana Mayor, Vumile
comment but said “The spe-
Some youth organisations
spoke about what they offer
to the youth when they are in
need.
Sibonakaliso Mavuya of
Rhodes SRC student benefits
and sponsorship, said, “Most
youth does not know about
the National Students Financial
Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
when they complete Grade
12 they stay at home because
they don’t have money to continue
with their studies, as the
Rhodes SRC and students we
are opening doors to the community
on spreading the work
to the youth that finished
Grade 12 to come and enrol
with the Rhodes.” The NSFAS
makes it possible for school
leavers to take out a loan so
that they can study further.
The youth were also
given an opportunity to elect
the new youth council. The
elections were conducted by
the provincial youth council
members, Xola Ngcangca and
Phakisho Mooi.
The new elected council
is as follows, Lungile Klaas
(chairperson) Tsepiso Nzayo
Luzuko buku, treasurer Siphokazi
Tana and additional
members Thanduxolo Faxi
Sanlam’s client helpdesk offers
personalised service
Situated in Grahamstown, the client helpdesk forms part of Sanlam’s extensive plans to get closer to
its clients again.
For a considerable time the financial services group has
been involved in a nation-wide roll-out to establish client
services offices and client helpdesks offering its clients a
personal and all-inclusive policy service.
The national roll-out of Sanlam’s client services offices
has been completed, according to Andries Fourie,
Operational Manager of these offices. “In support of
Sanlam’s client-centric strategy and as an extension of the
Client Contact Centre, these walk-in offices now offer a
unique service to clients who prefer to deal with Sanlam
on a face-to-face basis,” he says.
As part of the service structure for Sanlam clients, the
new walk-in offices and call centre are further supported
by smaller walk-in offices opened mostly in specifically
identified towns in the country. Like the client services
offices throughout the country, these offices are being
upgraded to support and enhance Sanlam’s corporate
identity, especially in areas where Sanlam has not been
visible lately.
Fourie further explains that there are client services
offices country-wide where a complete policy service is
provided to clients and intermediaries. These client
services offices are positioned strategically in the following
business centres: Pretoria, Bellville, Johannesburg,
Durban, Bloemfontein and East London. These offices
provide additional support to Sanlam’s Client Contact
Centre, which handles about 7 500 to 10 000 calls daily.
In addition, there are 51 smaller offices called client
helpdesks.
Access to personal policy servicing points
“Thanks to the client services offices and client helpdesks,
more Sanlam clients now have access to personal policy
servicing points. Where possible, these structures also provide
a policy service function to intermediaries,” says Andries.
Housing blame game
Our front page carries photographs of two Reconstruction
and Development Programme’s (RDP) houses in
Vukani that are in such a terrible state of disrepair
that they threaten the lives of their residents. They are not
the only RDP houses in imminent danger of collapse. A large
proportion of the houses in Vukani are already in a poor state
– less than ten years after their completion.
The original motivation for the RDP housing project was
to provide basic accommodation for people who had been
cruelly disadvantaged by apartheid. It was supposed to address
the critical post-1994 housing backlog. In Makana Municipality
this backlog is believed to be in excess of 12 000 units.
The intentions of the RDP are good; vast sums of money
have been made available for the construction of houses and
the government has certainly provided political support for
the programme. Yet in spite of all the positive factors behind
this bold initiative, the programme has produced only mixed
results.
If all the funds allocated to the programme had been effectively
used, we would not have thousands of people living
in rickety tin shacks without toilets. We would not need
a bucket toilet system to dispose of human waste and we
would not have RDP houses with walls you can literally
look through. Enough money has been allocated to provide
all the citizens of Grahamstown with at least the very basic
accommodation.
There are many explanations why the programme has
not produced the desired results, but perhaps one of the
most insidious reasons is linked to the game of pass-the-buck
played between municipal, provincial and national officials.
An investigative reporter working in our newsroom has
been following the trail in an attempt to find out who is to
blame for the housing crisis in Makana. Why are the almostnew
RDP houses falling apart? The answer appears to be:
everybody is blaming everybody else.
The first report based on her research is published on
Page Three of this edition. On Tuesday, we expect to provide
you with a closer look into what is really happening behind
the RDP housing scene in Grahamstown.
not necessarily represent the views of the either body.
Defamatory
allegations
I was stunned by the serious allegations
made against me in Grocott’s Mail (Residents
expose RDP corruption Friday,
18 September). In order to protect my
reputation, name and dignity, I immediately
took the appropriate action to deal
with those slanderous and malicious allegations.
The matter is being dealt with
at the appropriate level. I have never
committed any of these acts I have been
accused of.
On 3 September the municipal top
management and myself took a decision
that all allegations of the corruption
in Eluxolweni housing project be
collated and referred to the provincial
anti-corruption unit for investigation. At
that point in time, as has been reported,
the target of the allegations was the
disbanded area committee. Since then,
the municipal housing section encouraged
the Eluxolweni residents who have
allegations to provide evidence through
the due process. No evidence has been
forthcoming but only the same tirade
which has now been redirected at me.
I do not know the specifics of the
allegations against me (which house
was sold and to whom) and I am being
slandered mostly by indigent individuals.
Let my accusers rush to provide
the evidence so that it may speak for
itself. In the meantime, let us all respect
that process. People must please rest
assured that I have never betrayed the
trust vested in me upon the office.
Lastly, in Grocott’s Mail of 28 August
the public was promised “we are prepared
to go to court as soon as we have
enough evidence.” To date that has not
happened. If at that point there was a
shred of evidence, it should have been
given to police as corruption is a criminal
offence. The truth will come out.
Muni must
employ competent
technicians
I wish to raise and highlight some of
the issues that make our municipality
look bad in terms of service delivery.
The engineering and infrastructure
development department of Makana
Municipality is either very negligent or
they are taking us for granted as people
of Grahamstown East.
The outcomes of the projects and
recent incidents on current development
projects make us believe that they are
somehow not doing the jobs they are so
well paid for. These are mainly the municipal
project managers, engineering
technicians and building inspectors.
Firstly how can anyone justify the
designs leading to the narrowing of
Raglan Road four way stop and the
expansion of the sidewalks? To me
this borders on an attitude of taking us
locals for granted because the municipal
technicians and engineering consultants
didn’t consult us in terms of what we
need in terms of local traffic.
Secondly the Faki’Tar tarred road
is poorly designed and poorly built. It
is quite narrow, uneven and has poor
storm water drainage, just like at the
deep drainage crossings next to Vergenoeg.
They also did not clean or remove
the loose stones left on the roadside
afterwards.
There are deep ditches next to the
road where they could have built pipes
underneath. I think this is again due to a
lack of consultation and no work supervision.
When consultants are appointed
in Makana, they simply do as they please
because they know that there is no interest
from municipal technicians.
Thirdly and lastly, the same applies
to the R6-million Extension 9 community
hall (under construction at present)
where the entire roof collapsed.
There again, the people to blame
are project managing engineers and
municipal technicans who are the
building inspectors. Had they done their
work properly, the roof would not have
collapsed with workers getting injured
on site.
The municipality is also to blame for
having failed to recruit experienced and
effective engineers. From now on
Can’t fix Operation
Fix-up
Readers may recall that almost a year
ago a tornado wreaked havoc in some
of the most impoverished areas of
Grahamstown, including Scott’s Farm,
which happens to fall within Ward
11 which is managed by the local DA
branch.
Soon after the tornado struck, it
became apparent that emergency funding
from the government was not going
to be quickly forthcoming and the DA
Makana Branch thus initiated Operation
Fix-up as a means of demonstrating
local concern for the plight of those who
were affected.
Under the auspices of Gadra and
other local services clubs, enough
money was raised to carry out essential
repairs to 13 houses in the Scott’s Farm
area. The cost of repairs to another two
properties were borne by St Patrick’s
Catholic Church and Andrew Hutchinson
of Hutch Properties.
Jamie Sholto-Douglas of Pennypinchers
also assisted by providing
materials at a heavily reduced price.
The first phase of the operation
was completed in about March this
year at which stage it seemed as if the
promised funding from the province was
imminent. Accordingly, it was decided
to ‘mothball’ the project as available
funds had been exhausted and there did
not seem to be any point in any further
fundraising efforts.
At that stage there was still a balance
of R2 000 or so owing to Pennypinchers
which has remained outstanding.
At the most recent meeting the DA
decided that the balance should be paid
out of its own funds in addition to the
R2 000 which was donated to establish
the fund and the R10 000 raised towards
the project through the sale of Operation
Fix-up raffle tickets.
Pauline Mitchell of Gadra, who
administered the Operation Fix-up bank
account, was asked to establish the
exact amount that was owed to Pennypinchers
so that we could make the
necessary payment.
I have today been advised by
Pauline Mitchell that Jamie Sholto-
Douglas has replied that he is willing to
write off the outstanding balance as a
donation towards the project.
as Jamie and others, regularly support
that the community recognises and appreciates
their generosity.
As the DA Makana Branch and on
behalf of everyone involved in Operation
Fix-up we wish to thank Jamie and Pennypinchers
most sincerely for this act of
kindness.
As heartwarming as such generosity
is, a year later the promised emergency
funding from Bisho has still not materialised.
The latest we hear is that they
are still busy with a damage assessment
whereas complete information in that
regard was available within weeks of
the tornado. It was on the basis of that
information that Operation Fix-up got on
with the job.
The question has to be asked: when
is government, whether national, provincial
or municipal, going to get its act
together?
Going by the rules
As someone who is often compelled to
“go by the rules” regarding green ID
books, I feel I need to interject some
reality into “A Non-Refugee’s rant (The
pitfalls of bureaucracy”, 22 September).
When I refuse to accept a drivers license
as ID, I don’t do so because I want
to be petty or otherwise, I do so because
the law (in the form of the Identification
Act 1986) requires me to. Unfortunately
this particular piece of legislation
predates the current credit card-style
drivers licenses and makes no provision
whatsoever for them.
It isn’t as simple as “using discretion”
as the writer suggests. The law
also provides hefty fines (the kind that
have six zeros) for such “discretion” and
often holds the person accepting the
document personally liable in addition to
their employer.
Thus, irrespective of the fact that
I agree that the law is frustrating and
stupid, I exercise common sense (the
kind that says I can’t afford the fine) and
ask people to comply.
As regards to the comment about
laptops, clearly A Non-Refugee hasn’t
travelled to Europe or the USA recently
and been asked to reboot their laptop to
confirm that it actually works. ACSA, in
asking people to remove their laptops
at airport security check, is merely
complying with the minimum pre-flight
screening requirements imposed by the
International Civil Aviation Authority,
just as most other airports worldwide do.
The people imposing this sort of
bureaucracy are often just as frustrated
by it as you are.
Guy
Jaywalking
pedestrians
I refer to Mike Bandey’s letter “Grahamstown’s
the good, the bad and the ugly”
in the Grocotts Mail of 22nd September
on his subject of jaywalking pedestrians.
Well dear sir, are you a pedestrian
ever?
Why pick on us pedestrians, very
rarely do motorists, even police vehicles,
ever stop for a pedestrian at the zebra
crossing outside Checkers/High Court,
so maybe I, the pedestrian should get a
loudhailer to use when next I try to cross
here?
Try being a pedestrian outside
Drostdy Arch – it’s a ‘ walk and pray’
area - pray you dont get run over by
impatient motorists!
Review
Jan Hugo on piano
Dr Jeffrey
Brukman
Jan Hugo, the 18-year-old
South African pianist currently
studying in Italy,
was the Grahamstown Music
Society’s featured soloist in
last Wednesday’s recital at
Guy Butler Auditorium.
Hugo’s two encores, a
Scarlatti sonata and Chopin’s
Winterwind Etude summed
up his approach: fleet fingerwork
rendered with minimal
tonal colour and a lack of interpretive
finesse.
He marched his way
through the Chopin etude
with scant regard for phrasing,
line, colour, rubato or
cantabile tone. In the swiftly
moving Scarlatti sonata – an
ideal vehicle for displaying
his deftly controlled passage
work – Hugo’s avoidance of
terraced dynamics and clearly
enunciated cadence points
reduced this Baroque work to
Arguably his best offering
was Ravel’s Miroirs though
the sad and soulful bird calls
in Oiseaux tristes needed
greater characterisation and
the repeated notes in Alborada
del gracioso lacked true
control. Beethoven’s Piano
Sonata No 26 in E major
displayed glimpses of colour,
sensitivity and structural coherence.
However, Hugo’s imagination
ought to have been
coloured with a symphonic
sound world so as to avoid
Beethoven’s piano scoring
from appearing insipid and
shallow.
Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage
suffered from the same
approach: monochrome, muted
and bland. Hugo’s reading
was devoid of romanticism
and displayed a distinct lack
of understanding for the
style. On a technical level his
control over tonal balance,
especially at phrase endings,
was less than satisfactory. In
this work especially, the treble
The state of this instrument
is clearly under par and its
maintenance ought to be the
subject of an urgent inquiry.
In Franck’s Prelude,
Chorale and Fugue, Hugo
displayed a good intellectual
understanding of the music’s
structure although he must
still develop the skill of transferring
his performance from
the practice room to the concert
stage.
Hugo must still examine
the tonal variety inherent in
French romantic organ registration
and apply it to this
work. His entry into the touring
concert circuit regimen
is premature and ill advised.
His concert promoter ought
to heed warnings that for a
fledgling musician this type of
exposure is exploitative and
can do more harm than good.
Concerto reaches a crescendo
Priscilla Hall
Performing a concerto
with an orchestra is a
dream for many young
musicians. Now eight of the
best young players in South
Africa will do just that in the
Concerto Festival in Grahamstown
in October. These
youngsters are the finalists
from the Grahamstown National
Music Competition who
battled it out in the Concerto
section in early August. Only
six finalists were meant to be
named, but the standard of
playing was so high that the
judges selected eight contestants
to perform a movement
of a concerto with the Rhodes
orchestra. For most of them, it
will be their debut as soloists,
a night to remember forever.
The Rhodes Orchestra
may have groaned at having
to learn two extra concerto
movements, but lead by their
enthusiastic conductor Juan
Muñoz they have had nearly
three months to prepare pieces
by Haydn, Mozart, Liszt,
Grieg and Kabalevsky. They
will accompany three Rhodes
music students, all pianists:
Jacques du Plessis (age 21,
East London), Cathy Hodgson
(age 19, Grahamstown) and
Mia Pistorius (age 21, Pretoria).
Wayne Greenberg on
cello (age 23, Johannesburg)
is also studying at Rhodes.
In 1989 the Professional
Association of Diving Instructors
(Padi) developed
the Aquatic World Awareness,
Responsibility and education
(Aware) project. The project
aims to educate divers on
their role in conserving underwater
environments and
create a group of environmental
advocates.
The organisation also provides
educational information
and collaborates regularly
with other environmental organisations
like the Wyland
Foundation and the Ocean
Conservancy.
In addition, Aware coordinates
an international cleanup
day which is held annually
in September.
The project has developed
speciality courses that introduces
divers and non-divers
to environmental issues and
conservation.
On Saturday the Rhodes
University underwater club
braved overcast weather and
strong currents to answer the
project’s call for action. Scuba
The Grahamstown Flower
Festival will still be taking
place despite the recently
imposed severe water
restrictions.
Organisers are optimistic
of its success and the festival
will be taking place in
the Makana Botanical Gardens
on the weekend of 7 and
8 November.
The Gardens of Grahamstown
competition is on and
the search for the loveliest
local gardens has gardeners
getting their hands dirty.
The competition takes the
drought and water restrictions
into consideration and
local gardeners are urged to
enter to show how a lovely
garden can be maintained
regardless of the water re-
strictions. Judges will also be
awarding bonus points for any
garden making use of indigenous
plants and where water
wise gardening is evident.
however, is not necessary for
a certain percentage of the
garden to consist of indigenous
plants to be included in
the competition.
Pam Golding properties
have sponsored generous
cash prizes for the winners of
the four categories.
Runners up will receive
hampers with a selection of
garden products and the winning
gardens and runner up in
each category will be open to
the public on the weekend of
the festival.
A small donation will be
required to gain access to the
open gardens as the proceeds
will go to the Masiphilisane
Project of the St Barnabas Anglican
Church, Alicedale. This
poverty alleviating project
aims to help people grow vegetables
to sell to local residents.
The closing date for the
competition is 16 October
and entry forms are available
eager young faces. Volunteers for the selfhelp
programme groups (ShG) from Vukani,
etembeni, Siyazama, Joza multipurpose community
centre, xolani, Luzuko Pre-School and
emgokolweni were cleaning up the streets in
their respective areas last week.
The ShG is an informal group, mostly
made up of women, with the common objective
of working together towards the
upliftment of the community. Through the
Centre For Social Development they came
up with the idea to start cleaning up their
neigbourhoods.
Initially the clean up campaign was
meant to happen during August as a way of
commemorating Women’s Month, but due
to unforeseen circumstances it was moved
forward to this month. “We are very excited
about being part of cleaning up our streets,”
said Nomthunzi Sideba, a xolani ShG member.
Within each group, a member of the
levels of pollution and how it
affects our natural environment,”
said the club’s development
officer Alexandré
Lenferna.
“It also helps people to appreciate
the value of nature
and to help them realise that
they can make a difference
individually but especially if
they work together.”
It is estimated that
100 000 marine mammals
choke or get tangled in debris
every year. But marine debris
does not only affect animals
living under water.
It has been reported that
fishing line, net and rope have
been found in more than 260
animal species worldwide and
it is estimated that one million
seabirds are killed by litter
each year. Aware’s clean-up
day is the biggest of its kind
where more than 370 000
volunteers clean over 33 000
miles of shoreline, removing
approximately seven million
pounds of rubbish.
“Our clean-up is really
one tiny aspect of a global initiative
which is making a tangible
difference,” Lenferna
said. “even though each individual’s
input may only make
a slight difference, when it all
comes together it makes a
world of difference.”
Plastic is not fantastic
• Nearly 80% of all marine debris is plastic. In some parts of
the ocean plastic outweighs plankton six to one.
• An estimated 46 000 pieces of plastic litter alone are
floating on every square mile of ocean, 70% of which will
eventually sink.
• It takes glass bottles one million years to biodegrade in the
natural environment.
• Plastics do not biodegrade. When plastic debris meets
water it remains there for centuries, breaking down slowly
into smaller fragments and finally into plastic dust.
from the recyclables after it was collected.
After all the rubbish is collected it will
be sorted and sent to the dumpsite where the
process of recycling will begin.
Makana Municipality has also been helping
out by donating black bags to the cause.
“We are encouraged by this initiative and we
would like people to know that waste is recyclable,”
said the municipal environmental
manager, Ndumiso Nongwe who also mentioned
that 2010 is just around the corner and
Grahamstown needs to look good and stay
clean.
“We are not expecting anything other
than the cleanliness of our streets,” said
Lizeka Qowani, a community facilitator who
lives in Fingo village.
Nomonde Devani, a xolani community
facilitator, hopes that this campaign will continue
as long as the township exists. “I would
like to rope these people in as a nucleus and
assist them because Grahamstown has to be
clean!” he said.

Spreading the gospel on two wheels
Maria Sibiya
If you think that rock
climbing is adventurous,
wait until you hear how
the Circle of Life Revival’s
team spreads the gospel. The
four-member team from Johannesburg
is crossing the
country by bicycle on a mission
to raise as much funds as
possible to provide bibles and
bicycles for missionaries in
Africa. The teams stopped in
Grahamstown on Monday before
making their way to King
William’s Town.
The energetic team is aiming
to travel 5 212km across six
provinces, visiting 54 towns in
40 days.
Despite the contrasting
weather conditions and varying
state of the the road, the
cyclists believe that their mission
is for good purpose, so
they are riding and keeping
their heads high.
Driving alongside the
team is Christina Lanjeira,
one of the cyclists’ wives, in
the mobile home they will be
all staying in for the duration
Backed by his fellow
Christians, it was his idea to
Like a parched land
PSALM 143. A heart-wrenching cry from
a human being in need. A vivid picture
of agony: “My soul thirsts for You like
a parched land.” In this piece of poetry
the phenomenon of drought becomes
symbolic of the universal experience
of a person’s need for God. Of course
there are the good times when we feel
on top of the world. When our lives effortlessly
slide into cruise control, and
we just feel fine. But somehow the words
embark on a cycling trip to
help other Christians in need.
He says that “there’s always a
great need for bibles” as there
are many people who can’t
afford to buy a bible due to
poverty.
While in Grahamstown,
Thought for the week
of the psalmist remind me that we are
essentially, always, like a parched land
before God. We as human beings are so
dependent on the countless elements
that determine our health, happiness
and wellbeing, the weather just being
one of them: the rain and the sunshine,
the winter rest and the new growth of
summer. We always need God, not just
in times of drought. Dare we say that a
drought, like the one we are encounter-
A Muslim scholar’s journey
bilal randeree
MAuLAnA Amir Sherman has been
living in Grahamstown for almost two
years. He was born in Yahud, a city in
Israel in 1973.
“My parents were from Russia and
had immigrated to Israel the year before
I was born,” he said.
“They lived there for 12 years and
then moved to South Africa in 1985. I was
schooled in Johannesburg and went to
Technikon there where I studied many
things – mechanical engineering, computers
and electronics. I also used to do
tricks on horses for the circus. While at
Technikon I met Muslim friends whom I
became very close to. We used to smoke,
drink, take drugs and womanise together,”
he reminiscences.
In the 10 years they were friends, he
would occasionally accompany them to
the mosque for prayers on Fridays.
“They used to speak about the practical
aspects of Islam – cleanliness,
shaving of pubic hair, prayer and so on.
They also told me that Moses, the Jewish
prophet, was mentioned more in the
Q’uran than the Prophet Muhammad
himself,” he said.
“They were not practising Muslims
but what attracted me to them was that
they had warm hearts, good characters
and when I was high on ecstasy, they
used to comfort me.”
When his parents got divorced, his
dad moved back to Israel and his mother
and sister moved to Germany. He was 25
years old at the time and moved in with
one of his Muslim friends who was living
in Johannesburg. At this point he started
asking himself questions about life
and death and what happens to a person
after they die. He wanted to worship but
had no Jewish friends to show him how
to pray.
Sherman was then employed by one
of his friends who ran a business selling,
among other things, air fresheners.
“This friend of mine then went on
the straight path, grew a long beard
and started wearing a robe. I used to be
with him most of the time and visited the
mosque with him,” he said. In this way
he was invited to Islam, after returning
from missionary work in the Indian subcontinent.
“My friend saw that I was inclined to
Islam as I visited the mosque with him
regularly. He said to me that I needed
to choose whether I wanted to remain
a Jew or become a Muslim,” said Sherman.
“He also said that whatever I
choose, he would still be the same friend
to me and this touched my heart.”
“I decided that I was ready to become
a Muslim and said to myself that
if there was anything I didn’t like, I could
always turn back,” he says of the time.
He then became a Muslim in June
1998 and joined the missionary work his
friend was involved in. It was here that
he met a group of Maulanas (Islamic
scholars) who had just returned from
the team was welcomed by
Pastor Strauss de Jager of the
nG Church. He said that although
he didn’t spend much
time with the crew, they had
an opportunity to meet with
the nG confirmation group.
Throughout their journey, the
team has been visiting schools
in various towns where they
are taking part in worship sessions
and distributing school
books and supplies donated by
Rotary South Africa.
They need 200 bicycles
for the missionaries (which
comes to a total cost of
R200 000) and 130 000 bibles at
the cost of R3 700 000.
According to Boles, the
bicycles will supply missionaries
in Africa with a mode of
transport to spread the gospel
of Jesus Christ.
He also said “The bible is
the word of God given to man
to aid us all through life”.
If anyone would like to
assist with a donation they
can use the following banking
details. Circle of Faith,
account number 1520099045.
ing right now, may remind us of our constant
need of God? If He is our Creator
who infused in us the life of his own Spirit
in the beginning (Genesis 2), then we
are indeed like a parched land without
Him. So let us pray for rain. Let us ask
the Giver of all good things to have mercy
on the community of nature around
us. To pour His Spirit of faith and hope
and love into our thirsty souls.
Strauss de Jager, NG Kerk
India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
“I spent 40 days with them and this
was the best time of my life,” he said. “I
saw these scholars standing and preaching
and prayed in my heart that that was
what I wanted to do with my life,” he said.
When he returned, he joined a Muslim
seminary school in Azaadville near Johannesburg.
He studied there for seven
years and then went on missionary work
in the Indian sub-continent.
There he met an American born
Muslim man living in Pakistan with a
Jewish father and Christian mother.
Sherman married his daughter while
he was in Pakistan and moved back to
South Africa with his new bride.
On his return to South Africa in
December 2006, he worked at a motor
spares shop in Johannesburg during the
day and taught Muslim children in the
afternoons.
In March 2008 he moved to Grahamstown
where he engages in some
social work during the mornings and
also teaches Muslim children in the
afternoons.
“I lead the prayers and I am a spiritual
leader for the Muslims here,” he
said. He feels that the Muslim community
in Grahamstown is growing with
people moving here from other places
and some locals embracing Islam.
“I like Grahamstown. It is very
peaceful and green and the people
here are kind, hospitable and helpful,”
he said.
Samuel Ntsiko
celebrates their
principal’s success
ASANDA NAKETI
“EACH day is a new canvas
to paint something on. Make
sure that your picture is full
of life and happiness, the aim
is to make it beautiful,” said
Education District Officer,
Nombuso Mxotwa. Samuel Ntsiko
Primary School hall was
abuzz with activity last Friday
as the school celebrated their
very own National Teaching
Award (NTA).
These awards consist of
eight categories which are:
excellence in primary school
teaching; secondary school
teaching; primary school leadership;
secondary school leadership;
Grade R teaching; inclusive
education and special
needs teaching; adult basic
education and training (Abet)
and a lifetime achievement
award. Principal Nombulelo
Koliti brought home the primary
school leadership award.
NTAs are an annual event
that were initiated in 2000 by
the Department of Education
to acknowledge and encourage
dedicated and caring teachers
in their efforts to develop learners
as citizens of a democratic,
non-racial and non-sexist
South Africa. The teachers are
nominated by their respective
schools and adjudicated in the
district office of their province.
“As much as most teachers are
good, some need that little motivation,”
said Pumeza Kalipa.
“The award is not only about
the principal, the school also
gets the recognition and there
are funds that accompany the
award which are to be deposited
into the school account,”
she added.
Mxotwa said, “You are never
a leader without followers
and there cannot be followers
without a leader, this is a joint
effort.” She also emphasised
that to make a school excellent,
there has to be faith, good
work, effort and a sense of responsibility.
She also said that
in the teaching industry, selfexamination
is vital as major
barriers are often self-imposed
which may lead to incompetency.
“Our school has various
programmes and initiatives
and I believe that anything is
possible,” said Koliti. She also
said that NTAs are there to be
used as an opportunity to make
a difference. “If one person is
hard working, let us support
them and not try to demotivate
them.”
Fiat Strada
The Fiat Strada is a familiar sight on South African roads
for good reason. A unique blend of style, practicality and affordability
has ensured that it has been able to carve a very
successful niche for itself in the light commercial vehicle
market.
The Strada success story is set to continue with the introduction
of the all-new Strada Working 1.4 (to be followed
shortly by the Strada Life 1.4). These two new models together
with the extended cab Strada X-Space Adventure 1.4
comprise the revitalised, three-model range which is now
fully imported from Brazil.
In addition to sharing the same 60 kW 1.4-litre 8-valve
multi point injection powerplant, all three models benefit
from a host of aesthetic refinements.
SA students make the grade
The finalists for the Mondialogo Engineering Awards have
been selected. An international jury of experts nominated 30
teams and their project ideas for the finale of the worldwide
contest for engineering students organised by Daimler and
Unesco. Participants from 28 countries will be represented
in the finale, among them South African students from the
University of Cape Town.
The teams will take part in the Mondialogo Symposium
from 6 to 9 November in Stuttgart, Germany where the ultimate
Mondialogo Engineering Awards – gold awards worth
15 000 euros, and silver and bronze awards worth 10 000 euros
and 5 000 euros respectively – will be awarded.
Key criteria for nomination by the jury are quality, creativity
and feasibility, addressing the UN Millennium Development
Goals, as well as the intensity of cooperation, dialogue
and exchange of knowledge between the student engineers.
About one third of the finalists are women.
Putting the Zoom-Zoom spirit into action
In the spirit of Women’s Day the Women in Motorsport panel
of Motorsport South Africa hosted women, their partners
and families for a fun filled day of motorsport at Zwartkops
Race Track west of Pretoria. Mazda got in on the Zoom-
Zoom action with the Mazda Motorsport Team.
The Class T Mazda3 MPS race cars that compete in the
Bridgestone Production Car championship were on display
throughout the day.
Team drivers Heinz Böse and Etienne Prinsloo were on
hand to demonstrate the Zoom-Zoom abilities of the various
Mazda products. The pair had their hands full taking the ladies
around the track for some ‘hot laps’.
The women were able to experience just what it feels
like to go around a race track at high speed. It was also an
opportunity for them to experience the dynamic and sporty
capabilities of the various Mazda products.
Get ready to Cruze
General Motors South Africa has confirmed that the Chevrolet
Cruze will be available in South Africa in the coming
months.
The introduction of this latest global model from Chevrolet
will open up a new segment in the local passenger car
market for GMSA as the Cruze will offer exceptional value
for money in the compact or ‘C’ car segment.
First shown to the public at the Paris Motor Show in
2008 and shortly thereafter to the South African public at
the Johannesburg International Motor Show in October last
year, the Cruze builds on the new direction for the Chevrolet
brand first evidenced in the Captiva and more recently in the
new Aveo Sedan and Hatch.
Distinguished by its four-door, coupé-like styling, the
Cruze will attract buyers from a wider audience than just
the traditional four-door sedan buyer. It will prove particularly
attractive to those who are looking for a family vehicle,
a traditional core value of the Chevrolet brand.
The 1.6 litre engine produces 83 kW at 6400 r/min with
torque of 153 Nm at 4200 r/min while the 1.8 litre unit produces
104 kW at 6200 r/min with torque of 176 Nm at 6200 r/min.
The 2,0 litre turbo diesel 16-valve engine offers 110 kW
with miserly fuel consumption of just 5.6 l/100km in the combined
cycle of measurement. The torque is 320 Nm from just
2000 r/minuntes.
It’s Spring on the moon for Goodyear and Nasa
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa)
and The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company have developed
an airless tyre to transport large, long-range vehicles across
the surface of the moon. The new Spring tyre with 800 load
bearing springs is designed to carry much heavier vehicles
over much greater distances than the wire mesh tyre previously
used on the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). The
new tyres will allow for broader exploration and the eventual
development and maintenance of a lunar outpost.
The Spring Tyre was installed on Nasa’s Lunar Electric
Rover test vehicle and put through its paces at the Johnson
Space Center’s Rock Yard in Houston where it performed
very well.
Renault Sandero gets 2nd place
RENAULT South Africa recently commissioned Malcolm Kinsey
to compare parts pricing on two of the latest additions to its
stable with competing makes and models within their respective
market segments: the made-in-SA Sandero 1.4 litre Authentique
hatchback and the imported Logan 1.6 litre sedan. Kinsey’s MRK
Publications provided the parts pricing on competitor vehicles
while Renault provided the parts pricing on its two models.
Logan and Sandero were launched in November 2008 and
March 2009 respectively so neither model had participated in
Kinsey’s previous annual parts survey. Published last October,
it is regarded by South Africa’s car industry to be the definitive
study on parts pricing. The results of this latest survey conclusively
reveal that Renault is delivering on its promise of service,
quality and affordable cost of ownership. Of the six cars surveyed,
the Sandero 1.4 ranked second overall. Coming in almost 50%
cheaper than the most expensive competitor model, the Toyota
Yaris T1, Sandero lost out to the VW Citi Golf 1.4.

Celebrating the gleaming
gems of local sport,
the annual Sports Personality
awards at Rhodes
University took place at the
Sports Administration building
on Friday, 19 September.
The top fifteen Rhodes sports
personality finalists for 2009
were nominated by individuals
and then shortlisted by
the committee members.
Thereafter, the nominees are
put through an interrogation
session and results are formalised
through a point system.
The nominees were congratulated
by the special
guest of honour, Renee Naylor,
a South African Springbok
physiotherapist. It was her
first time in Grahamstown,
and she said the personality
awards are a great idea.
Of the woman nominees,
the second runner up was
Rosanne Gilbert, who competes
in archery followed by
the first runner up, Samantha
Lewis who is a hockey player.
The overall winner from the
womens section was awarded
to Tessa Polous. The second
runner up in the mens category
was awarded to Wesley
Wells for rugby, followed by the
first runner up, Tyron Theessen.
The winner of the male
personality award for 2009 was
awarded to James Dylan of
Rhodes rowing. The winners
proved to be actively involved
in clubs, respected and admired
by all, and always willing
to help. Their enthusiasm
for sport is invaluable.
