HE following chapters recently appeared in the
columns of the Leeds Express, and, as newspaper
contributions, met with such favour as
to induce the Proprietor of that journal to
issue them in a volume. In collected form,I
trust that the sketches may not be deemed an
unwelcome addition to local literature. Ido not profess
this work to be a complete History of Yorkshire, but
a varied, and,Ihope,an entertaining, series of articles
from the highways and by-ways of the annals of the
county.
It affords me pleasure to express my deep obligations
to Mr. Edward Lamplough, Mr. J. W. Gould, Mr. F.
Ross, and Mr. T. Tindall Wildridge, for favouring me
