HISTORY PRIOR TO DEPARTURE OVERSEA$<br />

The Battalion wa's activated April 20, 1943 at<br />

Camp Stewart, Georgia as the <strong>562nd</strong> Coast Artillery<br />

Battalion (AA) (Mobile). In May the designation<br />

was changed to <strong>562nd</strong> Anti-Aircraft · Artillery Battalion<br />

(A W) (Mobile). The Battalion went through<br />

basic and unit training at Camp Stewart until October,<br />

1943. On October 8th the Battalion· moved to Camp<br />

, McCoy, Wisconsin, arriving October 11th. While at<br />

Camp McCoy the Battalion went through combined r<br />

training with the 76th Infantry Division. This included<br />

a month from February 16 to March 13, 1944<br />

on winter maneuvers in the Ottawa National Forest<br />

in northern ·Michigan. The Battalion had a permanent<br />

camp near Watersmeet, Michigan.<br />

On June 13, 1944 the Battalion left Camp McCoy<br />

for Fort Fisher, North Carolina, arriving on June 15.<br />

Fort Fisher Iwas a sub-area of Camp Davis, North<br />

Carolina. While at Fort Fisher, the Battalion did a<br />

lot of refresher training, including considerable firing.<br />

On August 24 the Battalion moved to Camp 'Davis to<br />

prepare for overseas movement. On September 24' the<br />

Battalion left for the Staging Area,- Camp Miles Standish,<br />

lYfassachusetts.<br />

562ND OVERSEAS HISTORY<br />

We leff Boston' on October 7, 1944 ab8ard the USS<br />

Mount Vernon, fonnerly the SS George Washington.<br />

The trip on the whole was fairly smooth. Towards<br />

the end the seas got a bit rough and quite a few n1en<br />

foun.d it easier to stay in their bunks than get up.<br />

On October 15th we docked at Liverpool, England.<br />

We soon learned, however, that we were not to stay<br />
