O
ur theme for this year – our 15th year – is Vision for our
Community. Appropriately, this vision is what created the Porter
County Community Foundation in 1996. A group of visionary
leaders gathered to decide how to make the biggest impact in Porter
County. There was an opportunity to win matching funds if we could
establish a credible organization and raise the funds and motivation
to do good work in our community.
And so it happened. Each time a goal was reached, another one was
set and lives were forever changed. For the better. The original vision
has been surpassed many times over. Yet we believe that today’s
Foundation is just a fraction of what it will become. We continue to
expand our vision and reach further, making more of a difference for
more people each year.
We’re grateful for your support and your vision as well. We hope
you’ll keep us in your sights as we move collectively forward,
reaching forward in our shared Vision for our Community.

The Foundation
begins
It a started with a vision and a carrot.
The vision was to create a way to support our community today and forever by bringing people
and organizations together to make a difference. The carrot was a grant from Lilly Endowment
Inc. The Indianapolis-based philanthropic foundation was offering $500,000 to community
foundations that could raise $1 million in endowed funds for their own communities. The
opportunity to make a positive impact in Porter County was too great to pass up.
A group of community leaders gathered in response to the challenge. The Foundation was
born. Lilly Endowment Inc. continued to provide incentives and the Foundation continued to
rise to the challenge, bringing each possible dollar home to Porter County.
Many of the Foundation’s earliest successes are still actively serving the community today.
Early on, the Foundation was able to provide a grant to the Portage Boys & Girls Club that
resulted in the magnificent gymnasium that is rarely quiet to this day. A similar grant helped
establish the county’s first transitional housing facility, which continues to provide sustainable
housing to Porter County residents.
Yet the Foundation has always been much more than a collection of funds. We’re about
convening people and organizations, creating priorities and action to make positive things
happen in our own community.
Today the Foundation includes many different funds to benefit any cause you care about –
housing, human services, education, healthcare, the arts and more. But even more, the
Foundation stands for causes we all care about – leading the way in creating a 10-year-plan
to end homelessness… finding ways to enable students to continue their education… making
a positive impact on the community we call home.

foundation qualify for
matching funds,
creating the Porter
County Community
Foundation
A substantial gift from Harley and Jan
Snyder was instrumental in helping
establish the Porter County Community
Foundation. The Snyders contributed a
building, which became the initial seed
from which the Foundation grew. The gift
enabled the Foundation to qualify for the
matching funds that established the
Foundation. Since that time, the Snyders
have also contributed gifts in memory of
their parents, ensuring that the
organizations they care about will
continue to serve our community forever.

Lilly Scholarship Program begins
They have the grades and the test scores, but
scholarships have helped make college possible for
more than 200 local students since 1997. The Lilly
Endowment Community Scholarship Program initiated
the Foundation’s scholarship efforts by providing full
four-year scholarships to attend any college or
university in the state of Indiana. Since that inaugural
year, many scholarship recipients have gone on to
graduate from college and become doctors, lawyers,
experts in their fields, and successful citizens.
The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program provides full
tuition and fees to any college or university in the State of Indiana in
addition to providing $800/year for books. The 2011 recipients
were: Adam Alamillo (Valparaiso High School), Mayra Martinez
(Portage High School) and Ian Ansburg (Boone Grove High School).
The Launch Your Career Scholarship is
available to students attending the Porter
County Career and Technical Education
Center. Recipients were: Rebeka Dres
(Valparaiso High School), Krystle Koedyker
(Valparaiso High School), Carissa
Martinez (Chesterton High School), Megan
Price (Portage High School), and Kayla
Turner (Portage High School).

NIPSCO provided funding for $1000
scholarships to: Rebecca Shutske (Kouts
High School), Rachel Lundstrom (Valparaiso
High School), Samantha Loza (Portage High
School), Laura MacNeill (Hebron High
School), Cassandra Gibson (Washington
Township High School), Robert Conrick
(Chesterton High School) and Jana

“The scholarship made my
degree possible,” said Nicole Wilcox
who graduated from Purdue University with a
degree in aerospace engineering in 2008.
“Without it, I would have had to settle
for staying at home and studying at
the extension where they don’t even
offer aerospace engineering. I feel
lucky to have been given this
wonderful opportunity.”
Shawn Moyer was a 1999 Endowment Community
Scholar who passed away during his sophomore year
at Taylor University. Lilly Endowment and the
Foundation endowed the remaining balance of
Shawn’s scholarship to create this award for
graduates of Kouts High School. The 2011 recipients
were: Keren Kandel and David Hershberger.

Pat Crise had always been a volunteer, giving time and talent to charity.
She was also familiar with community foundations, having grown up in
Cleveland – home of the country’s very first community foundation. In
1999, Crise became the first to establish a donor advised fund with the
Porter County Community Foundation. Crise continues to add to the
fund and she remains actively involved in deciding who receives
support from the proceeds of this permanent gift. “If you have
something, you need to share,” said Crise. “Become
involved in your community and you yourself will reap
more than those you give to,” she said.

John Remster chose to become one of the early members of the
Foundation’s Echo Society. Remster had firm roots in Porter County,
beginning with his birth in 1920 in Morgan Township. Along with his
wife Margaret, Remster ran a family farm and he also served as Vice
President of First National Bank. After Margaret’s death, Remster knew
he wanted to give back to the community he called home by giving a
meaningful gift – his actual home. Remster’s wish to have his gift
remain in his community, along with his sound banking background
brought him to the Foundation. By making the gift during his lifetime,
Remster was able to benefit from a sizable tax savings while he
enjoyed his home for the rest of his lifetime. John Remster passed
away in 2010, yet his legacy continues, as the proceeds from the sale
of his home are part of the Foundation’s permanent endowment.

Ethel and Arthur Horton raised their two children, Peter and Polly, on the
family farm in Washington Township. Ethel joined the Board of the Visiting
Nurse Association in the 1970s and remained a loyal supporter through the
years. The current Arthur B. and Ethel V. Horton Hospice Center was made
possible thanks to the family’s generous support. “Ethel Horton was
a very private lady with quiet strength who believed in
the value of sharing one’s gifts with the community.
She has left a legacy that will continue in perpetuity,”
said Laura Harting, past Executive Director of the VNA of Porter County.
Ethel was a strong proponent of The Caring Place, Opportunity
Enterprises, the Porter County Parks Foundation, and the Porter County
Community Foundation. Ethel was a wonderful example of how getting
involved helps build a better community for all today,
tomorrow and forever.

$4 million raised in GIFT V
Motivated by a matching grant opportunity
from Lilly Endowment Inc., more than 400
Porter County individuals and businesses
came together to earn the entire $2 million
matching grant. Alan Harre served as
Chairman of the GIFT V Campaign. First
National Bank was vitally important in helping
the Foundation meet the match by giving the
gift of land worth $325,000 and adding
$180,000 to ensure the Foundation
would qualify for the full
$2 million match.

Foundation moves to 57 Franklin St.
and hires additional staff
Once again, a grant from Lilly Endowment
Inc. supports the Foundation. This time the
grant provides funding to help the Foundation
move into a facility that is centrally located
within the county and accessible for donors
and nonprofit organizations alike. The
additional funding also makes it possible to
expand staff by adding an Administrative
Assistant and Community Resource Director

Impact Porter County created
The women of Porter County have been strong
Foundation supporters since the beginning and began
meeting annually for a ladies tea in 2001. In 2007, the
tea got stronger with the introduction of Impact Porter
County, a giving circle with a simple and ambitious
mission: Raise $100,000. Half of this money would be
given away immediately to causes that advance women
and half would be endowed at the Foundation to
continue helping women forever. The results have been
phenomenal. Since 2007, Impact Porter County has
raised more than $540,000 and awarded $170,000 in
grants to such organizations as KV Works (to provide
workforce training for women), Porter County PACT (to
support a program to assist female offenders in making
positive future choices), Hilltop Neighborhood House
(to create Walt’s Place) and Parents as Teachers of
Porter County (to expand services in Porter County).

Hospital Foundation funds received
Porter Hospital had established its
own foundation in 1995. In 2007,
when the county hospital was sold to
a for-profit entity, leadership of the
Porter Hospital Foundation chose to
transfer the more than $2 million
from the hospital’s foundation to the
Porter County Community

The Porter County Community Foundation
celebrated its 15th year with a Fab Fifteen
FUNdraiser focused on the future… our
children’s future! More than 300 attended the
event at the Porter County Expo Center, dressed
in their favorite college team gear, to show their
support for higher education.
“Our goal was to raise $10,000 for each
inspiring year since our founding,” said Barbara
