novice underwriter who had in front of him a completed life-proposal<br />

form. The senior underwriters’ task was to help the novice come to<br />

an underwriting decision by means of telephone communication. The<br />

sequence of rule testing engaged by the expert was recorded by the<br />

knowledge engineer and provided one means of identifying the priority<br />

of rules.<br />

One set of rule testing with high priority is given below:<br />

Has every question on the proposal form been answered?<br />

IF yes THEN ask:<br />

Is the current proposal sum insured within no evidence limits?<br />

IF yes THEN ask:<br />

Are there any previous sums assured in force?<br />

IF no THEN ask:<br />

Are height and weight within acceptable parameters?<br />

IF yes THEN ask:<br />

Are there any other questions on the proposal form that are answered<br />

‘yes’?<br />

IF no THEN ACCEPT PROPOSAL.
