The Titan View Volume 9, Issue 1 ~ By Srija Nalabolu The Latin Club has been working hard since last summer, when a delegation of Georgia Latin students flew the long distance to Fargo, North Dakota to attend the National Junior Classical League convention. There, our delegation spent a week immersed in the classics, learning new things, making new friends, and challenging ourselves. Although the competition was tough, our students performed admirably. Facing students with four to eight more years of Latin, we managed to achieve awards in academics, arts and athletics. Our Certamen teams also excelled, placing among the top teams in the finals. The first great event of the semester was the Latin tailgate at the first home game. This was our chance to show the new Latin students our enthusiasm, and we went all out. During this fun event, nearly the entire Latin club showed up clothed in togas and marched proudly to the football game. We even brought our chariot, a bright, red contraption proudly constructed by the loving hands of our club members. Gathered together in the stadium like a crowd of Romans at a gladiator game, we shouted our cheers, in both Latin and English, at the tops of our lungs. That night of hamburgers, togas, and football was a memorable night for both our club and the school. The next event of the year was Fall Forum, which took place at the Galloway School. This was a chance for the new students to get a first taste of what the club was all about. There were workshops that taught everything from military strategy to mosaics. There were athletic games, the Olympica, in which students competed in egg races and tug of war, and tests of knowledge. There were also mental Pentathlon in which upper level students competed for a free trip to State Convention. As always, our Latin Club shone brightly; Jessica Lin, placed second and Alex Sumner and Shashank Adepu also placed in the top 20. One of our own students, Jen Zhong, was elected Hostess for the GJCL, a prestigious position. Now, three out of the nine state officers are from Northview High School. As November approached, the Certamen teams of our Latin club began to prepare for their first big competition, the annual Turkey Buzz Off which took place at Eastside High School. Certamen, the varsity sport of the Latin club, is a battle of wits and fast reflexes—three fourman teams sit on the edges of their chairs, waiting to slam their thumbs down on the buzzers. The teams—two for upper level, two for lower and an amazing six for novice—participated in the day-long event. All the weeks of long preparation and hard training paid off, and the Northview Certamen teams swept first in all levels, including both first and second place at Novice level. In individual sweepstakes, Northview students took first in each level, as well. There will be more Certamen tournaments throughout the year, and the Certamen teams are still honing their skills. The next Certamen tournament is the Marist Lupercalia set to take place in February. The Latin Club wishes our players best of luck with all of our hearts. Meanwhile, the entire Latin Club is already preparing for the great, culminating event in April of next year—State Convention. During this three-day event, all the Latin clubs in the state of Georgia will convene at Rock Eagle to celebrate the classics with competitions, workshops, and plenty of cheering. It is the time of year every Latin Club student has been waiting for. At State Convention, there is something for everyone. For the academic people, there will be several academic tests. For the creative, there are artistic competitions in everything from handmade dolls to posters. For the athletic, there is Olympica all three days. And for the Certamen players, there is the important Certamen tournament of the year—the state finals. But most importantly, there will be time to dress in a toga and fit right in with the Roman procession, to stretch out on the lawn at night and find the constellations in the sky, to forge new friendships that will last much longer than the three days of convention. Of course, all of our Latin Cub‘s achievements this year and in previous years could not have been possible without the constant support of our Latin Club sponsor and only Latin teacher— Mr. David. Many may know him (Continued on Page 17) www.northviewhigh.com Page 15
