Immunoglobulin
as designed by nature
For full prescribing information please refer to the Summary of Product Characteristics:
Intratect® - Human Normal Immunoglobulin for Intravenous Administration, Ph. Eur. Composition: 1ml of solution contains: human plasma protein 50mg, thereof at least 96% is IgG, excipients: Glycine and water for
injection. Indications: Replacement therapy in: Primary immunodefi ciency syndromes such as: - congenital agammaglobulinaemia and hypogammaglobulinaemia, - common variable immunodefi ciency, - severe combined
immunodefi ciency, - Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome; Myeloma or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia with severe secondary hypogammaglobulinaemia and recurrent infections; Children with congenital AIDS and recurrent
infections. Immunomodulation: Idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), in children or adults with a high risk of bleeding or prior to surgery to correct the platelet count; Guillain-Barré syndrome, Kawasaki disease.
Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to any of the components. Hypersensitivity to homologous immunoglobulins especially in very rare cases of IgA defi ciency when the patient
has antibodies against IgA. Special warnings and special precautions for use: Certain adverse may occur more frequently: in cases of high rate of infusion, in patients with hypo- or agammaglobulinaemia with or without
IgA defi ciency, in patients who receive human normal immunoglobulin for the fi rst time or, in rare cases, when the product is switched or there is a long interval since the previous infusion. Rarely, human normal immunoglobulin
can induce a fall in blood pressure with anaphylactic reaction, even in patients who had previously tolerated treatment with human normal immunoglobulin. Cases of acute renal failure have been reported
in patients receiving IVIg therapy. Standard measures to prevent infections resulting from the use of medicinal products prepared from human blood or plasma include the selection of donors, screening of individual
donations and plasma pools for specifi c markers of infection and the inclusion of effective manufacturing steps for the the inactivation/removal of viruses. Despite this, when medicinal products prepared from human
blood or plasma are administered the possibility of transmitting infective agents cannot be totally excluded. This also applies to unknown or emerging viruses and other pathogens. Undesirable effects: Adverse reactions
such as chills, headache, fever, vomiting, allergic reactions, nausea, arthralgia, low blood pressure and moderate back pain may occur occasionally. Rarely IVIg may cause a sudden fall in blood pressure and, in isolated
cases, anaphylactic shock, even when the patient has shown no hypersensitivity to previous administration. Cases of reversible aseptic meningitis, isolated cases of reversible haemolytic anaemia/haemolysis, rare cases
of transient cutaneous reactions, and increase in serum creatinine level and/or acute renal failure have been observed with IVIg. Very rarely thromboembolic reactions such as myocardial infarction, stroke, pulmonary
embolism, deep vein thrombosis may occur.
Welcome to ESDR 2009
It is our utmost pleasure to welcome you to the 39th annual
Meeting of the esDR and to budapest, a city often called the
Queen of the Danube. The meeting organisers selected the
dynamically developing semmelweis University as main
venue for this event, a place where stephen Rothman,
founder of the investigative dermatology, studied.
Committed to achieving the highest quality of
dermatological science, the program of the budapest
2009 esDR Meeting will feature over 600 posters from
36 countries, plenary lectures, concurrent sessions,
symposia and workshops on hot topics of research, putting
forward the most recent developments in experimental
dermatology.
During the time of the conference the 14-acre orczy
Garden park will be at our sole disposal just across the
street from the meeting venue, with its lush walkways,
ponds, benches, sport facilities and a running track.
The Run for atopic Dermatitis, an early friday morning
4km running race will be organised for those of you
who wish to stay fit and balanced during the time of the
conference.
stephen Rothman's former piano will be exhibited at the
meeting venue and every participant is free to follow in his
musical footsteps.
Welcome from the ESDR President
The first esDR meeting in the former eastern europe, the
other side of the iron curtain.
Just two decades ago, it was almost impossible to organise
a meeting gathering dermatologists and cutaneous
biologists from western and eastern countries.
This meeting marks the beginning of a new chapter in
the time of these new democracies and their ambitious
and intelligent people who will engage more and more in
research.
Today, budapest is a bridge between east and West. We
hope to use it to build up new connections and encourage
many young researchers in the field of dermatology to join
our active society.
still, there are huge problems and limitations for our
colleagues in eastern europe. Unfortunately, the economic
crisis is worsening the plight of many academic institutions.
However, we should never forget that human intelligence
and enthusiasm are the most precious gifts and,
fortunately, our colleagues maintain these traits despite
discouraging circumstances.
one of the most important roles of the esDR is to promote
the presentation of new research data and ideas at our
annual scientific meeting and clinically oriented symposia.
7
The open-air Hungarian Gala evening will take place on
friday at the bárka Theatre hidden behind the walls of
the orczy Garden. at this event you will vote to decide
which University Department has the best cooking skills
in Hungary: Debrecen, Pécs, szeged or budapest. Thanks
to the participation of the Gerbaud Kitchen’s chefs, you
can give Hungarian food a real try in the marquee during
the dinner. Hungarian dance classes will be available in
the bárka Theatre, and you can apply your newly acquired
dance knowledge in the subsequent disco or stay in the
marquee for live music and dancing.
budapest has always been famous for its hospitality,
and the organisers will do their best during the meeting
to advance this reputation and provide a comforting
background for a rewarding meeting and a wonderful stay.
Prof Sarolta Kárpáti
Chair, local organising Committee
esDR board Member
This year's meeting, thanks to the outstanding effort of
the scientific Program Committee, offers an exciting and
stimulating program with over 200 oral presentations and
over 600 posters. I encourage you to attend some of the
many excellent symposia and satellite meeting sessions on
offer. Your active participation is essential to the success
of the meeting, so please do not hesitate to ask questions,
make comments, and enjoy the hospitality offered by the
budapest organisers in the evening!
on behalf of the esDR I would personally like to thank all
who have and will contribute to the success of this meeting,
including our international guests, partner societies,
sponsors and members and especially Prof sarolta Kárpáti
and her team for all the engagement organising this year's
meeting in beautiful budapest.
POSTGRADUATE COURSE
our knowledge in basic science is rapidly increasing.
Dermatology has numerous interfaces with basic
science fields. Thus, a constant update in these areas is
crucial for the further development of dermatological
research. The purpose of the Postgraduate Course is
to provide overviews about primarily non-dermatologic
topics that are relevant for experimental and clinical
dermatology. These talks are principally intended as
essential updates for “non-experts”.
CLINICAL SATURDAY
The main mission of the esDR is to foster basic
research in dermatology and skin biology. To increase
the exchange between basic scientists and clinicians
at the annual meeting, the esDR has included a
“Clinical saturday” as part of the regular program.
by offering Clinical saturday and industry sponsored
symposia, the esDR hopes to make the meeting as
attractive for clinicians as it always has been for basic
scientists. The esDR feels committed to satisfying the
needs and interests of both scientists and clinicians.
The dialogue and cross fertilization between these
two groups is essential for the future prosperous
development of dermatology.
ADVANCES IN ROSACEA RESEARCH
Friday 11 September 2009, 12.30-14.00
KAPOSI ROOM
Note: Lunch boxes will be provided to symposium participants.
Introduction
Rosacea is one of the most frequent diagnoses in dermatology. first, this chronic inflammatory skin disease clearly
has a genetic component which is of unknown origin as of yet. additionally, rosacea can be triggered by many
external/environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation, spicy food, alcohol, stress, temperature changes
etc. It is interesting to note that - being a progressive chronic inflammatory skin disease - the development of
rosacea is characterized by multiple clinical conditions such as transient or persistent erythema, telangiectasia,
lymphedema and later fibrosis. Morphologically, rosacea is characterized by a lympho-monocytic infiltrate.
However, activated keratinocytes, fibroblasts and mast cell suggest that the pathophysiology of this disease is
very complex, and involves almost all skin and immune cells. That being said, rosacea appears to be also a very
good “model” for learning more about the complexity of neuro-immune interactions, dysregulated inflammatory
mechanisms and immunity, as well as vascular dysregulation during inflammation, and the development of
fibrotic processes during chronic inflammation.
Indeed, evidence is evolving that in chronic inflammatory diseases a close molecular and cellular interaction
exists between innate immune defence mechanisms, nerves, immune as well as blood and lymphatic endothelial
cells. It is important to highlight, that the treatment of this common disease is still unsatisfactory and which
demands a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Consequently, this symposium will focus
on understanding the molecular clusters of different body systems (immune, nervous, vascular, connective)
during chronic inflammatory processes, in order to find new strategies for the treatment of rosacea and other
inflammatory or fibrotic skin diseases.
