The city has, as such, initiated new dynamics which stem 

from its metamorphosis and its renewed urban 

development. Over the past year, Marseille has accelerated 

the pace of change, with the opening of the Mémorial La 

Marseillaise, the Maison des Cinématographies in the 

Château de la Buzine, the Silo d’Arenc concert venue, 

Michel Kelemenis’ Klap Maison de la Danse, etc. 

These achievements, along with those of hospitality and 

tourism professionals, are features of the major 

international events that our city will host: Seatrade Med in 

2012, Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture, 

the Euro 2016 Football Championship. 

A myriad of internationally-reaching events, which will 

greatly enhance Marseille’s attractiveness and renown, and 

will consequently put the spotlight on all the events that will 

take place in the city in the future. 

Since 1995, the city of Marseille has been developing a 

proactive policy for employment. This ambitious, innovative 

policy focuses on improving the local employment situation 

in the city and aims to reduce the differences between 

Marseille’s employment and unemployment figures and 

those observed at national level. 

The city’s third Marseille Employment Plan (2009-2014) will 

privilege meeting the employment needs of the catalyst 

sectors of Marseille’s economy. Focus will be put on 

employment in line with the five structuring economic 

driving forces of Marseille Provence Metropole’s economic 

action: the residential economy which currently covers 54% 

of jobs over the Marseille Provence Metropole area, 

logistics and transport totalling 11%, the productive 

economy also 11% and the knowledge-driven economy 

totalling 18% of jobs.

In just under 15 years, the number of meeting days in Marseille has more than doubled, with 

around 40% of all events involving the medical sector, which is considered to be “at the 

cutting-edge” in our city. 

The Marseille Congrès Convention Bureau, which was created in 1998, works on a daily 

basis to attract organizers of French and European professional events and to fulfil their 

expectations. 

Business tourism constitutes a significant financial impact for the city with around 150 million 

euros of economic benefits per year, with a conference participant spending €150 per day 

and per person on average. 

Promotional campaigns are organized in France, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and 

the United States.

The number of conference days undeniably increased in 2011 as a result of major events 

(French Auditors, EPP, European Marine Systems and Technology Conference, European 

Society of Surgeons etc). 

The France Congrès Association awarded the "Congrès et Ville de l’année" (Conference and City 

of the Year) prize to the Association of Chartered Accountants of the City of Marseille, in the 

"National Audience" category, for the 66th National Conference of the Association of Chartered 

Accountants which took place at the Palais des Congrès et des Expositions in Marseille in

On 20 October 2011, the European Commission decided to make the Port of Marseille one 

of the five French maritime ports considered as European-level strategic. It is the only one in

benefits: river, rail, road and pipeline, establishes it as a natural gateway to European 

markets.

Drawing on unprecedented economic revival, boosted by the arrival of a myriad of 

businesses, the city is experiencing high growth in tourism: over 4.1 million tourists in 

2011. 

In 2010, the number of jobs directly related to tourism in Marseille was estimated at 12,000. 

In 2011, this figure rose to 18,000. i.e. around 6% of total employment. (Source:

According to Pôle Emploi (Job Centre), tourism is the No.1 regional recruiter and the hotel 

and catering sector represents 20% of all offers of employment in the region out of a total of

Jobs in tourism in Marseille are not seasonal activities unlike the jobs proposed in the 

region’s seaside and ski resorts where the percentage of jobs in tourism is higher than that 

of Marseille: around 80% versus 6%, but mainly comprising insecure jobs. 

Tourism in Marseille represents over 700 million euros of economic 

benefits. 

Today, Marseille has 116 hotels, i.e. 6,913 rooms including: 

• 2 five-star, 15 four-star and 23 three-star. 

• By 2013 the city will have 7,400 rooms. 

• A hundred guesthouses complete this offer. 

EUROMEDITERRANEE 

Born out of a State and local authority initiative in 1995, Euroméditerranée is a commercial 

planning and development programme that aims to establish Marseille on a par with major 

European cities. As an economic, social and cultural development booster, 

Euroméditerranée is a catalyst, enhancing the attractiveness and influence of Marseille. It has 

been endorsed as an Operation of National Interest. With its 480 hectares, 

Euroméditerranée is considered as the largest Urban Renewal Operation in 

Europe. 

Euroméditerranée is developing a new “city on the city”, in line with the major principles of 

sustainable development: ensuring harmony between social equity, economic growth 

and environmental friendliness. 

Infrastructures, public spaces, but also offices, housing, shops, hotels, cultural and 

recreational facilities are currently being built or renovated by the world’s most famous

centre, the Joliette business district, tramway, MuCEM (Museum of European and

And the H99 residential tower 

Covering 94,000 square metres and led by the Constructa Group, the Quais d'Arenc, the 

most extensive private building project in France, prolongs the new skyline of the city with 

its three high-rise buildings and a horizontal building, designed by four world-renowned 

architects: Jean Nouvel, Yves Lion, Roland Carta and Jean-Baptiste Pietri. 

With H99, Jean-Baptiste Pietri has designed the first residential tower to be built in France 

since the 1970s, the only high-rise residential building of this project, imagined for its future

residents, it offers an innovative vertical living style and is equipped with exclusive services 

and facilities. The 149 apartments are currently being sold and should be delivered in 2015.

Heritage 

City of art and culture, Marseille has a treasure chest of wonders to share. With its 26 

centuries of existence, it offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. 

The city is a genuine timeline that invites the visitor to journey from its Greek and Roman 

origins, through its medieval religious foundations, up to the present day and its major 21 st 

century architectural achievements. Marseille’s myriad of monuments, scenic spots and 

museums are scattered throughout its 111 districts and 16 arrondissements. 

A brief outline tour of the city 

The Vieux-Port: in 600 BC, the Greeks, who had arrived from Phocaea in Asia Minor, 

landed in the Lacydon Calanque. Throughout Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the city only 

developed around the north bank of the port. In 1666, under the orders and influence of 

Louis XIV, the city began to grow towards the south. 

Semi-pedestrianization of the Vieux-Port: Marseille revamps its city centre 

Norman FOSTER, the British architect and Michel DESVIGNE, the French landscape 

architect were chosen in December 2010 to redesign the city centre, including semipedestrianizing 

the Vieux Port. Marseille is extremely proud to work with an international 

Star of architecture, who has won over 300 prizes, including the Priztker Prize in 1999. 

Today, the Quai des Belges comprises nine lanes separated by a central reserve. In 2013, 

only four will remain – two for cars and two for buses. Then the area will be fully 

pedestrianized. It will be intentionally mineralized to remain faithful to the urban and port 

history of the district and pedestrians will stroll along granite-paved walkways. The aim is to 

reduce transiting vehicle traffic around the Vieux Port whilst maintaining accessibility to car 

parks and encouraging the public transport reflex. Reorganizing traffic circulation is one of 

the major challenges of this project.

Notre-Dame de la Garde: standing at 154 metres, the Garde Hill is the highest point of 

Marseille. The basilica, whose Virgin-with-Child protects the city and its inhabitants, was built 

between 1853 and 1864, date of its consecration. To visit the basilica: appropriate dress 

required. 

The Canebière: Marseille’s emblematic thoroughfare, its name derives from the word 

“canebe” or “chanvre” (hemp in English) which was used by the rope-makers established 

here in the Middle Ages. In the 19 th century majestic Haussmannian buildings were erected 

here.

Vieille Major and Nouvelle Major cathedrals: Both are located in the Vieux Panier 

district and both are listed as historic monuments. The first dates back to the 5 th century. 

The second, built under Napoleon 1 st , was designed in Roman-Byzantine style. 

The Palais Longchamp: an ode to the glory of water, this monumental palace-reservoir 

is closely linked to the construction of the Durance Canal. It is deemed one of the most 

exquisite achievements of Second Empire architecture in Marseille. 

The Frioul Islands and the Château d’If: a limestone silhouette off the coast of 

Marseille, the Frioul archipelago’s four islands tilt their profiles towards the coast: Pomègues, 

Ratonneau, If and Tiboulen. The Château d’If, made famous by Alexandre Dumas who 

designated it as the prison for his hero the Count of Monte Cristo, is an ancient fortress 

built under François 1 st to defend the city. 

The Palais du Pharo: the mythical palace of Napoleon III, who wished for a “house on 

the water’s edge”, the Pharo is one of Marseille’s iconic sites. Overlooking the sea, 

embraced by magnificent gardens, the Pharo is a great place for walks and is also an 

international conference centre. 

Château and Parc Borély: Former property of the Borély family, it was built in 1766. 

The City of Marseille purchased part of the domain in the middle of the 19 th century. The 

17-hectare park comprising a lake, French gardens, a rose garden, a botanical garden, shaded

European Capital of Culture 2013 

Marseille-Provence has been chosen as European Capital of Culture 2013. Throughout 2013, 

hundreds of cultural and artistic events will be held across the region from Arles to La 

Ciotat and also taking in Salon-de-Provence, Istres, Aix-en-Provence, Gardanne, Martigues, 

Aubagne… and, of course Marseille. 

A myriad of forms of artistic expression will light up this important year: contemporary 

dance, music, visual arts, theatre, exhibitions, street art, literature, digital art, cookery, 

cinema… the public will be invited to join in this Capital Year in museums, theatres, 

outdoors, in the city, in the towns and in natural surroundings. Marseille-Provence 2013 will 

be a celebration of an age-old yet highly-contemporary dialogue harmonizing the cultures of 

Europe and the Mediterranean. 

This Capital Year will be marked by three “temporadas”, punctuated with highlights where 

new cultural facilities will be inaugurated, major exhibitions will be opened and popular, 

festive gatherings will take place. 

TransHumance, the GR2013, Cadavres Exquis, This is (not) Music, the Grand Atelier du 

Midi, Campus 2013 and much more: exclusive, one-of-a-kind events that can be discovered 

on our website. 

Marseille-Provence 2013 will reveal young talents from Europe and the Mediterranean and 

will pay tribute to great artists inspired by this region: VAN GOGH, DUFY, PICASSO, 

CESAR, LE CORBUSIER.

The Capital is getting ready, hand-in-hand with cultural, economic and social stakeholders, 

who are involved in unprecedented programmes, such as the Ateliers de l’EuroMéditerranée 

(workshops): a vast platform for creating in companies, public institutions, associations and 

hospitals, offering artists from Provence, Europe and the Mediterranean the opportunity to 

become involved in aspects that are often far removed from cultural creation. Dozens of 

artists are already at work in the “Ateliers”, an occasion for unexpected encounters that 

lead to unique experiences. 

In 2012, the inhabitants of the region will be directly invited to join in preparations for the 

Capital Year: their intimate knowledge of the area will be mobilized through photos, texts 

and audio recordings, which will be extensively collected with the help of the media and 

partner institutions, to bear witness to the lifestyles and the important living heritages of the 

Capital. 

2013 will leave a lasting impact throughout the area, with the inauguration of new cultural 

facilities that will transform the urban landscape forever: museums, concert venues, 

exhibition spaces, artists’ workshops, urban brownlands… contemporary, Provencal and 

international architects have committed themselves to creating these new bastions of 

creation in Marseille, Arles, Aix, La Ciotat and Aubagne.

Gastronomy 

A friendly, warmhearted atmosphere accompanies everyday meals, where olive oil and garlic 

are the eternal partners of the most typical dishes. Gateway to the Mediterranean, Marseille 

has always explored gastronomy from other lands and has incorporated certain of these 

preparations into its own local specialities. And the result? Spicy dishes with hints of 

sunshine, as well as fish, shellfish and other seafood products that deliciously bring out the 

best… 

A few suggestions to whet the appetite: 

the famous bouillabaisse, pasta with pistou, seafood platters, rice with favouilles (little grey 

crabs), alouettes “sans tête” (stuffed beef or veal rolls), Provencal daube, pieds et parquets 

(sheep’s offal), aioli (garlic mayonnaise), tapenade (with olives), anchoïade (anchovy-type 

paste), stuffed vegetables, stuffed squid, panisses (chick-pea fritters), chichi freggi (sugared 

fritters), rockfish soup and, of course, grilled sea bass, sea bream and sargo served with 

rouille sauce. 

Restaurants 

Marseille is home to a great many restaurants that offer cuisine ranging from traditional to 

“world food”, to oriental and to Mediterranean, with its strong Italian influences and, of 

course, not forgetting the fish specialities. Emphasis is also put on design and restaurants 

tend to adhere to the “city” trend, characterized by a highly-contemporary style.

The Gourméditerranée Association was created in January 2012 by Marseille’s chefs, 

restaurant owners and the Tables de Provence to “promote Marseille’s and Provence’s 

savoir-faire and gastronomy”. 

40 chefs from Marseille and the surrounding area, headed by Gérald Passedat, Lionel Lévy 

and Guillaume Sourrieu (Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Treasurer) got together, some 

mediatized and starred, others less well-known, but all with a great passion for “Made in 

Marseille” cuisine and with the same idea: to promote the area through the love of the

Sustainable development 

For many years now, the city of Marseille has been applying an ambitious, forward-thinking 

policy for sustainable water management. Marseille’s water is, as such, considered to be “the 

best water in France”. Since 1996, Marseille has been home to the headquarters of the 

World Water Council and was chosen to organize the World Water Forum in March 2012, 

which brought together 35,000 participants and saw 173 countries represented. 

The Harbour Management Plan was initiated in 2006 to enhance and preserve Marseille’s
