diseases. Data-mining the cancer genome allows us to rapidly discover cancer
genes as we have shown with two specific examples. Microarray technology and
bioinformatics approaches can be used in conjunction to facilitate target(s) discovery
and to clarify the mechanism. Currently, considerable false positives and false
negatives are encountered due to the nature of the cDNA libraries. However, better
integration of the databases and improvements in the quality of the EST
libraries in the future will greatly improve the gene discovery process.
I thank members of my laboratory for valuable contributions and Jeanine
Narayanan for editorial assistance.
