ionic emulsifier. This results in the emulsifier-containing
ester waxes.
The montan ester waxes are used as a balanced internal
and external lubricant for plastics processing.
Furthermore it is a component of care product emulsions
and technical emulsions of all kinds.
4.1.1.3 Partially saponified ester waxes
Licowax OP, Licowax O and Licowax OM contain soaps
of montanic acid with various degrees of bleaching.
Licowax OP is the wax with the highest ability to form
pastes and the best ability to absorb solvents. Thus it is
often used as a vehicle for pasty floor, shoe, car, and
leather care products, corrosion protection agents, and
grinding pastes. Thanks to its balanced polarity, it is
widely used as a lubricant in plastic processing. In the
aforementioned order of partially saponified ester
waxes, the quality of the color and characteristics
decreases from Licowax OP to Licowax OM; accordingly,
these products are suitable mainly for appli-
cations in which color plays a subordinate role. Licowax O
is soap of montanic acid that forms somewhat softer
pastes with solvent than Licowax OP does, but otherwise
evidences similar characteristics. Thus Licowax O
is used instead of Licowax OP or in combination with
natural or synthetic ester waxes to produce the desired
paste characteristics. Licowax OM contains soaps of
montanic acid, which, when mixed with organic solvents,
form pasty, soft pastes with high-glossy surfaces.
Thus it is used above all in making shoe polish.
4.1.1.4 Fully saponified montan waxes
If all of the acid wax is saponified in this manner, then
one obtains products that, in contrast to the montan
waxes discussed thus far, cannot be melted. The high
soap content can also reduce compatibility with hydrocarbon
waxes. Thus products of this kind are used when
melting technology and compatibility with hydrocarbons
are not an issue, e. g., as a lubricant and nucleating
agent in plastics.
