4.1 Waxes
4.1.1 Montan waxes
Raw montan wax can be extracted from brown coal
using solvents. In an oxidation process, the dark raw
montan wax is bleached and a light wax remains. These
light colored, hard acid waxes consist primarily of
straight chained, even-numbered and saturated acid
groups with a chain length distribution of C 22 -C 34 with a
maximum at C 28 -C 32 .
4.1.1.1 Montan acid waxes
Licowax S, Licowax LP, Licowax UL and Licowax SW are
light-colored, hard acid waxes that consist primarily of
montanic acids. Because of their polarity, they are easily
emulsifiable, serve as emulsifiers for other waxes when
saponified with alkalis, help to disperse pigments and
abrasives, bind solvents and react with dye bases to
form dye base digestion. Licowax SW, the wax that has
been bleached the most, is nearly white.

of the process, the type and quantity of alcohol offer
additional possibilities for varying the chemical
structure and thus the characteristics of the ester
waxes (manufacturing of all intermediate stages from
partial to complete esterification of the alcohol components).
