David and Ann Biggar Scholarship<br />

Interest from this fund will support one award to a part-time student in Years 1 through 4 enrolled in the<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts and Social Sciences (FASS). Based on minimum cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 9.0 and financial<br />

Joannie Cowie Canada Cares Foundation Bursary<br />

Joseph T. Culliton Award in the Humanities<br />

This award is to honour the memory <strong>of</strong> Rev. Dr. Joseph T. Culliton, former Dean <strong>of</strong> Arts, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />

Religious Studies, and staunch advocate <strong>of</strong> the humanities during his long career. An award will be<br />

made annually to a full-time student in third, or fourth year who is pursuing a major or joint major in<br />

Classics, English, History, a Modern Language, Philosophy, Music, Dramatic Art or Visual Arts.<br />

Applications must include an essay (1000 words) discussing the importance <strong>of</strong> the humanities and a<br />

liberal <strong>arts</strong> education in our changing world (submit to Student Awards & Financial Aid Office, clearly<br />

Douglas Davies Memorial Bursary<br />

An annual award to a needy student registered in a certificate or degree program in Criminology.<br />

Sean Ganley Memorial Award in Irish Studies<br />

Valued: up to $500. To a Canadian or Permanent resident student residing in Ontario who has<br />

demonstrated financial need and has the highest final grade, among those who apply, in a course, in<br />

either semester, that is predominently devoted to Irish literature, history or culture. The course must be<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered by one <strong>of</strong> the following departments: English, History, Classical and Modern Lang. Preference<br />

$1000 Graybiel In-Course Scholarships<br />

Six scholarships <strong>of</strong> up to $1000 each awarded annually to second, third, or fourth-year Canadian Citizens<br />

or Permanent Residents (includes those with Protected Persons status) who are graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>Windsor</strong><br />

secondary schools. Preference given to students majoring in English, History, French, Modern<br />

Languages, Social Sciences and Applied Sciences. Financial need will be a consideration. Established in<br />

Peter W. Halford Award in the Humanities<br />

Awarded to the full-time, Year 2, 3 or 4 student, with a major or joint major in History, English, Philosophy,<br />

French, Classics, or a Modern Language, and who is maintaining a cumulative average <strong>of</strong> at least 9.5. The<br />

eligible candidate is someone who has returned to full-time studies after having been away from school for<br />

at least two years. This award is to honour the memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. Peter Halford (1941-2002), former pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

and counselor in the Department <strong>of</strong> French, who studied the lexicon and history <strong>of</strong> the French <strong>of</strong> Le<br />

Dr. David H. Hubel Scholarship<br />

Value: up to $1100. Awarded annually to a Year I student registered full-time in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Science or<br />

Social Science, on the basis <strong>of</strong> scholastic standing (minimum average <strong>of</strong> 80%), and financial need.<br />

Applicants are required to submit a brief outline <strong>of</strong> "Ideas for the Science Society" (see details in on-line<br />

application). Candidates must meet OSOTF requirements-- Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents<br />

Dr. Elizabeth Reeve Kishkon Entrance Bursary<br />

The interest from this fund will support an entrance bursary for a first year student entering a Social<br />

Science program, with preference given to a female student. Based on academic accomplishment<br />

(minimum 70% entering average) and financial need. The successful candidate must be a Canadian<br />

Citizen or Permanent Resident (includes those with Protected Persons status), who meets Ontario<br />

residency requirements, and demonstrates financial need. This award was established in honour <strong>of</strong> Dr.<br />

Elizabeth Reeve Kishkon, the first female Mayor <strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Windsor</strong> and recipient <strong>of</strong> an honourary<br />

Kamil Kolodziej Bursary<br />

Awarded annually to an undergraduate Social Science student in any year <strong>of</strong> study. Based on minimum<br />

are asked to submit a letter corroborating community and/or volunteer involvement. Apply online.<br />

Rudolf A. Helling Memorial Award<br />

Value: up to $900. Awarded annually to an outstanding student (minimum 9.0 GPA) entering Year 3 or 4 <strong>of</strong><br />

an Honours program in Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science or Geography, who is pursuing studies<br />

in race, ethnic, or intergroup relations as they relate to Canada's heritage. Established in 1983 in memory<br />

Social Science Society Awards<br />

Value: $250. Two <strong>awards</strong> available to students registered full-time in Years 2, 3 or 4 in the Social Science<br />

contribution to the betterment <strong>of</strong> the campus and community through volunteer & extra-curricular activities<br />

Wally Majesky Bursary<br />

Value: $750. Awarded to a Year 2, 3 or 4 undergraduate student, registered in at least a 40% course load<br />

in the Labour Studies program (must be Canadian citizen or Permanent resident). Based on academic<br />

performance (minimum cumulative average <strong>of</strong> 8.5) and demonstrated financial need. Preference will be<br />

given to students who have demonstrated leadership in the <strong>social</strong> justice movement. Established in<br />

honour <strong>of</strong> Wally Majesky, by the Workers Health and Safety Centre and Building Trades Unions. Apply<br />

Joe Mattson Memorial Award<br />

Value: $1600. Awarded annually to a student entering Year 2 or beyond in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts or Social<br />

Sciences. Assigned on the basis <strong>of</strong> financial need and community involvement. Preference will be given to<br />

students involved with CJAM Radio. Established in 1994 by family and friends <strong>of</strong> Mr. Mattson to honour his<br />

Philosophy Alumni Undergraduate Bursary<br />

Value: $250 to be given to a deserving undergraduate student majoring or honouring in philosophy who<br />

can demonstrate financial need and academic potential. Minimum cumulative average <strong>of</strong> 8.5 required.<br />

Dr. Milorad Vuckovic Memorial Scholarship<br />

One or more scholarships <strong>of</strong> at least $800 to deserving students in the field <strong>of</strong> History, in Year 2 or beyond,<br />

assigned on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic merit and financial need. Established in 1975 by friends in memory <strong>of</strong><br />

Anita W. and Arthur Wendt Award in German<br />

Awarded to the German Major student returning for Year 3 or 4, with the highest major average in German<br />

program courses (minimum 3 German language program courses) who demonstrates financial need.<br />

Preference given to a student registered in the Ontario-Baden-Wurttemberg Exchange Program.<br />

Successful candidate must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, who meets Ontario residency<br />

requirements. Established in 2003 in honour <strong>of</strong> Anita W. and Arthur Wendt by Susan Wendt-Hildebrandt.<br />

Mrs. Whissle French Scholarships<br />

Up to three <strong>awards</strong> to be allocated annually to full-time students participating in French Studies exchange<br />

programs at the Universite de Nice or the Universite du Quebec a Montreal. The <strong>awards</strong> are based on<br />

good academic standing (minimum major GPA in French Studies <strong>of</strong> 9), and financial need. Successful<br />

Dr. Robert Whitehurst Undergraduate Scholarship<br />

excellent citizenship (activities for the department, university and/or community), and financial need.<br />

COMMUNICATION STUDIES<br />

Rotary Club <strong>of</strong> <strong>Windsor</strong> Communication Studies Award<br />

Awarded annually to a resident <strong>of</strong> Essex County, enrolled in Year 3 or 4 <strong>of</strong> the Communication, Media and<br />

Film program on the basis <strong>of</strong> academic achievement (minimum 9.0 cumulative average) and financial<br />

need. Preference will be given to applicants intending to pursue a career in journalism. Established in<br />

1991 by the Rotary Club <strong>of</strong> <strong>Windsor</strong> on behalf <strong>of</strong> President Fred Sorrell, and in memory <strong>of</strong> Angus Munro, a<br />

well-known newspaper reporter and writer. Apply on-line. Deadline: November 15.<br />

Kenneth J. Van Meer Scholarship<br />

This award is available to gay male students, registered full-time in Year 2, 3, or 4 in the Honours<br />

Computer Science or Honours Communication Studies programs with preference given to Computer<br />

Science. Based on good academic performance (minimum cumulative average <strong>of</strong> 9.5 required), and<br />

demonstrated financial need. Successful candidates must be Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents,<br />

meeting OSAP Ontario residency requirements, residing in Ontario. Award is renewable through<br />

re-application in subsequent years provided qualifying condition are maintained. Award cannot be held<br />

Kenneth and Rose Van Meer Memorial Entrance Scholarship<br />

This award is available to a gay male student, registered full-time in Year 1 <strong>of</strong> the Honours Computer<br />

Science or Honours Communication Studies programs, with preference given in Computer Science.<br />

Based on good academic performance (Minimum 10.5 cumulative average required) and demonstrated<br />

financial need. Candidates must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (includes those with<br />

Protected Persons status), meeting OSAP Ontario residency requirements, residing in <strong>Windsor</strong> or Essex<br />

County and must have graduated from <strong>Windsor</strong> or Essex County secondary schools. Award is renewable<br />

Martha & Werner Hildebrandt Award<br />

Value: up to $1100. Awarded to a Year 2, 3 or 4 full-time Communication Studies student. Preference will<br />

(minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 8.0), and proven financial need. Successful candidate must be a Canadian Citizen or<br />

DRAMATIC ART<br />

Backstage Award<br />

Two <strong>awards</strong> valued at $750 each. Awarded to the Year 1 student registered full-time in the School <strong>of</strong><br />

Music, and the School <strong>of</strong> Dramatic Art, for outstanding creative work in his/her final secondary school<br />

year. Creative work is considered to be the writing <strong>of</strong> plays, scores, lyrics, set design, underscoring, and<br />

work with lighting and sound. Performance students would be considered as well, provided that they also<br />

assisted backstage. Eligible candidates must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (includes<br />

those with Protected Persons status), who meet the Ontario Student Assistance Program Ontario<br />

residency requirements, and who are facing proven financial hardship. Good academic standing,<br />

minimum 5.0 GPA required. This award was established in 2004 in memory <strong>of</strong> Ethel May and Rowland<br />

Club Soda Award <strong>of</strong> Excellence<br />

Interest from this fund will provide an annual award to a Year 3 or 4 Dramatic Art student. Award is based<br />

on academic performance (minimum 9.0 cumulative GPA), financial need, proven leadership, voluntary<br />

participation in a community theatre production, community drama project or workshop, or <strong>University</strong><br />

Players production. Candidates must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent residents, meeting OSAP<br />

Ontario residency requirements. Club Soda members are not eligible to receive this award unless their<br />

Dramatic Art Entrance Scholarship<br />

Jules Tonus Memorial Endowment Scholarship for Excellence in Design and Scenic<br />

Art<br />

Awarded to a full-time student registered in Honours Dramatic Art, who has successfully completed two<br />

(2) courses in Scenic Design and two (2) courses in Scene Painting, and has indicated an interest in<br />

pursuing a career in technical theatre and/or design. Based on good academic performance (minimum<br />

cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 9.0), financial need, and intent to return for Fourth Year. Candidate must be a<br />

H & E Scholarship for Excellence in English<br />

The income <strong>of</strong> this fund will be used to provide bursary support to a full-time undergraduate student<br />

registered in years 2, 3, or 4 in the Department <strong>of</strong> English, who demonstrates financial need. Candidates<br />

must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents (includes those with Protected Persons status) in<br />

Ontario who meet Ontario Student Assistance Program Ontario residency requirements. Apply online.<br />

Dr. Eugene McNamara Scholarship<br />

Interest from this trust will support one award to a full-time undergraduate student in Year 3 or 4 in the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> English, Creative Writing Program. Based on academic achievement (minimum cumulative<br />

GPA <strong>of</strong> 11.0) and financial need. Applicants must submit a one-page recent example <strong>of</strong> their creative<br />

Alistair & Anita MacLeod Prize in Creative Writing<br />

Awarded annually to a full-time student registered in the Department <strong>of</strong> English, chosen by a competition<br />

<strong>of</strong> the best fiction as judged by a Departmental committee. The candidate must have a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong><br />

at least 10.0, and must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, who meets Ontario residency<br />

demonstrate outstanding performance ability. Students must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent<br />

Residents, satisfying OSAP residency rules. Participation in volunteer community activities may also be a<br />

Kiervin Family Award<br />

Awarded to a full time undergraduate Political student in Year 2, 3 or 4 whose studies have an<br />

meeting OSAP Ontario residency requirements, residing in Ontario, with demonstrated financial need.<br />

Howard Pawley Entrance Award in Political Science<br />

Awarded annually to a student who intends to major in Political Science; International Relations Students<br />

may apply for this award as well. The award will be determined by academic merit and financial need and<br />

demonstrated commitment to working with children, preferably in the area <strong>of</strong> children's health. This award<br />

was established in memory <strong>of</strong> Jenna Leigh Middlebrook who as an infant died <strong>of</strong> a congenital heart defect.<br />

Applicants must submit a brief typed statement (one to two double-spaced pages) outlining how their<br />

personal experience, employment experience, and studies have influenced their commitment to work with<br />

and Mrs. Stewart Moore. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Moore taught in the School <strong>of</strong> Social Work and received the OCUFA<br />
