Our 81st year of campus ministry
has begun. I find that at the
launch of a new academic year, it is
important to call to mind once
again what our work is all about.
As you know, SJCNC is committed
to building authentic community
through the residential life
of Newman Hall and through the
ministry programs of the Center as a
whole. Our aim is to lead students
to discover the meaning and purpose
of their lives in the person of
Jesus Christ.
Last year was not without its
challenges as we worked to get our
expanded facilities up and running.
I’m happy to report that not only
did we double the capacity of the
Hall from 280 to 580, but our waiting
list also doubled—to 300! While
I wish we could house everyone, I
am encouraged that so many desire
to be part of our community.
We also see it as our mission to
provide a dynamic outreach and
witness to the larger student popula-
From the Director
M SGR. G REGORY K ETCHAM, D IRECTOR & HEAD C HAPLAIN
tion of the University of Illinois. The
simple fact is that students need spiritual
support and guidance. For this
reason, I am excited to have Newman
alumnus Fr. Anthony Co joining our
team as Assistant Chaplain (see facing
page), and I know students will
respond to his youth and zeal for the
Gospel. We are also blessed that Fr.
Barry Cole (of the prelature of Opus
Dei) and local pastor Msgr. Albert
Hallin have generously volunteered to
make themselves available on a regular
basis for spiritual direction and other
pastoral needs our students may have.
When people ask what special
events we have planned for the year,
I’m tempted to respond, “What we do
everyday—prayer, sacraments, sharing
the Faith together—is special!” That
said, we do have an array of key
opportunities to share the Gospel
throughout the coming semester.
October, for example, will be a
very full month. Fr. Wade Menezes of
the Fathers of Mercy will visit from
October 2nd to the 4th to preach a
mission on Divine Mercy, while the
end of the month will see both our
annual Eucharistic Procession on the
Quad as well as the return of exorcist
Fr. Vince Lampert (who drew a record
crowd last year).
We will also spend the next several
months gearing up for the national
“Made for More” conference hosted
by FOCUS. We plan to bring as
many U of I students as possible to
this faith-building event, which will
be held in Orlando from December
30, 2009 to January 3, 2010 and has
a projected attendance of 4,000 college
students!
Please keep our students and staff
in your prayers as we begin this year,
and know that we are truly grateful
for your support.
In Christ,
Greetings, Newman family!
While I’m new to the pastoral
team this year, this is not the first time
I’ve been to the Newman Center. In
1998 I transferred to the U of I to
study philosophy and completed my
degree in 2000. I really didn’t get
involved with the Newman Center
until the summer entering my senior
year. It was a pivotal year since I not
only came back to my faith but also
experienced a profound calling to the
priesthood. Immediately after graduation
I started my seminary studies and
in 2005 I was ordained a priest for the
diocese of Peoria.
I’ve had a lot of different jobs so
far in the priesthood. My first year was
Voice of Newman
F R . A NTHONY C O , A SSISTANT C HAPLAIN
out on the western front of our diocese,
near the Mississippi river. I was
parochial vicar (fancy title for “assistant”)
at three parishes—the main
one being Immaculate Conception in
Monmouth—and a Newman Chaplain
for Monmouth College. After a
year I was transferred to Champaign
to be assistant chaplain to Latino
ministries and parochial vicar at St.
Matthew’s Catholic Church. So I
went from small country parishes to a
large parish at the opposite side of the
diocese; from trying to learn how to
be a priest, to trying to learn how to
be a priest in Spanish! I survived and
it was great. Eventually, I got wind
that I was going to be moved and to
my delight it was to the Newman
Center.
C ARDINAL N EWMAN’ S C ORNER
It’s going to be a great year.
Many of my former parishioners were
excited for me when they found out
where I was going. I’ve received a lot
of questions from them, but the most
important question people have asked
me is, “What do you want from your
time at the Newman Center?” Or,
simply put, “What do you want?” My
answer: I want to be happy. I want to
know the meaning of things. I want
to be free. This is what fascinates me.
My hope is to have all these things
through a companionship with all of
our students and staff.
May God bless you this new academic
year.
Sincerely yours,
Fr. Anthony
“It will not satisfy me, what satisfies so many, to have two independent systems, intellectual
and religious, going at once side by side, by a sort of division of labour, and only
accidentally brought together. It will not satisfy me, if religion is here, and science there,
and young men converse with science all day, and lodge with religion in the evening. It is
not touching the evil, to which these remarks have been directed, if young men eat and
drink and sleep in one place, and think in another: I want the same roof to contain both
the intellectual and moral discipline. Devotion is not a sort of finish given to the sciences;
nor is science a sort of feather in the cap, if I may so express myself, an ornament and setoff
to devotion. I want the intellectual layman to be religious, and the devout ecclesiastic
to be intellectual.“
— From his sermon, "Intellect, the Instrument of Religious Training", preached in the
University Church, Dublin. Feast of St. Monica—Sunday after Ascension, 1856.
FOCUS Update
The Fellowship of Catholic University Students
(FOCUS) plans to expand its discipleship further
beyond the Newman Center as it enters its 10th
academic year on the Illinois campus with a team of
six missionaries.
“We’re focused on spreading out on campus and
getting to the other dorms and hopefully doing small
events there that will build up the Catholic community,”
said Team Director Travis Todd. “We’ll be evangelizing
outside the Newman Center in addition to
the work we already do at Newman.”
However, to accomplish this, Todd said the team
must first seek God’s direction.
“First and foremost we want to remember that
we’re doing the will of God and keeping that as the
forefront of our mission,” Todd said. “We have to be
seeking God’s direction in all that we do.”
In addition to Todd, the team includes returners
Fr. Luke
Spannagel
Position: Director of Ministries
and Assistant Chaplain
Years Lived at Newman: 3
Student Involvement: RA,
Graduated: 1998
Andrea Francois, Brett Rhodes and Amanda Nissen and
newcomers Ryan Purcell and Jenna Spaeth.
Todd, as well as the entire team, looks forward to
serving the University of Illinois campus in the year to
come and bringing Christ to students through discipleship.
“I think that the Christian faith is best loved and
best learned through a discipleship medium, when you’re
taken by the hand and shown how to live a Christian
life,” Todd said. “It’s a great environment in which to
grow. We hope that by coming to campus we will reach
students who otherwise wouldn’t be reached.”
Six SJCNC alumni - Jimmy Becker, Anne Marie
Brummer, Steve Rogers, Anne-Marie Cheely, Angeline
Holmes and Patrick Reinhart - were hired by FOCUS in
the spring and are beginning their outreach on campuses
across the country. Since 2001, 35 men and women from
SJCNC have served as FOCUS missionaries.
Newman in the World
Answering the Call
While most members of the University
of Illinois’ class of 2009 are
landing their first job or attending
grad school, two young men are pursuing
a different kind of calling.
This fall, Alex Millar and Joe
Baker will enter Mount St. Mary’s
Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md., This is
a particularly important time for religious
vocations, as Pope Benedict XVI
declared a “Year of Priests” beginning
on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus on June 19.
Neither Millar nor Baker has had
a clear cut path to deciding to enter
the priesthood.
Alex Millar was born in Urbana
while his parents were pursuing graduate
degrees but grew up in Midland,
Michigan. His was raised Catholic by a
Catholic mother and Mormon father,
but his catechesis was fairly minimal.
“As a child, I went through all the
basic Catholic rites like First Communion
and Confirmation in Michigan,
but my family didn’t really go to
church that much,” he said.
Millar didn’t really look into his
faith until the end of high school
when he dated a militant atheist who
challenged his beliefs and woke him
out of a spiritual malaise. So when he
entered the University of Illinois he
began searching for the truth.
“I found a Protestant group at
first, but as I got more involved with
them and went to some Protestant services,
something just felt wrong about
6 The Catholic Illini FALL 2009
it all. There was something missing,”
he said.
Millar said he also started attending
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in
Urbana, where he had been baptized
as a baby.
“I discovered what I was missing
there. It was the Eucharist and a longing
for the Real Presence of the Lord.
And I found it at St. Pat’s and that’s
what really brought me back into the
Church,” he said.
Millar began attending daily Mass
at St. John’s Catholic Newman Center
while still remaining active at St. Pat’s.
As he grew more engaged in the faith
freshman year, he had thoughts about
the priesthood, but quickly buried
these feelings.
“I was one raised expecting a family,
and in the LDS (Latter-Day Saints)
church my dad belongs to, the biggest
thing you can do to serve God is get
married and raise a large family. I didn’t
really think about the priesthood
because of that,” Millar explained.
He began reconsidering his calling
at the end of his sophomore year when
he heard former Newman priest Fr.
Tom Holloway give a sermon on vocations.
He then spent the summer at
the cathedral in Peoria with Fr. Brian
Brownsey, who further interested him
in the priesthood. Afterward, he
engaged in conversations with Newman
religious staff and attended the
Men of God vocations group at
Newman.
“Fr. Brownsey did a great job of
teaching me how to pray. We spent
time talking about discernment,”
Millar said. “Fr. Luke and Msgr.
Ketcham were also very helpful. It
was great getting to talk to them
about spiritual things. I felt very
open. If I ever wanted to go in and
talk, I could.”
Millar admits the hardest part
of this process has been trying to
help those closest to him to understand
his discernment. Despite this
struggle, Millar said he never regrets
his decision to enter the seminary
and looks forward to serving God.
“There’s a genuineness about
Alex that you can’t miss,” said Fr.
Luke Spannagel. “He has a real
desire to serve the Lord. That made
me believe very easily about the genuineness
of his vocation.”
Like Millar, Joe Baker was raised
with the basics of Catholicism. He
grew up in Morton, Illinois. and
attended a Catholic grade school,
but he didn’t explore his faith very
much until the end of high school
when unexpected events occurred
that opened his eyes and sparked an
interest in a return to the faith.
Baker began college in search of
something more with an earnest
desire to make something of himself.
He started attending weekday Mass
once or twice a week and going to
confession more frequently his freshman
year. Still, Baker didn’t know
CathIlliniAUG09R 7/31/09 3:19 PM Page 8
anyone at SJCNC and wanted to find
a way to get involved. He caught up
with an old high school classmate,
Mike Pawlowicz, who had experienced
a conversion and is presently a seminarian.
“He was telling me how he had
joined a Bible study and invited me
into it, and it was exactly what I was
looking for,” Baker said. “Mike also
introduced me to the Opus Dei Center
in Urbana, and I really got
involved there.”
Baker got to know many priests
at the Opus Dei Center, but its director,
Peter Dowbor, was particularly
inspirational to him.
“He taught me how to initiate a
life of prayer and to make the
Eucharist the center of my day, as the
second Vatican Council calls for,”
Baker said. “But he also taught me
that you can live a holy life and still be
a cool guy, be real.”
Baker first felt a calling to the
priesthood when he went on a retreat
the summer after his sophomore year,
followed by a mission trip to Peru.
Back at Newman, Baker explored his
calling and began going to spiritual
direction and attended a vocations
retreat. In addition, he engaged in theological
conversations with Dr. David
Delaney.
“He helped me develop an academic
understanding of the faith,” Baker
said. “I was really impressed with him.
He took his time helping me outside
of the classroom, during his free time.”
Baker added that getting to know
the Newman priests, combined with
the opportunity for prayer at St. John’s
and the Champaign-Urbana community
especially helped with his discernment.
However, Baker’s greatest influence
was the presence of the Eucharist
at St. John’s.
“That’s why it’s so great that
Newman offers Adoration,” he said.
“It’s difficult to find God’s call if you
don’t know him, so it’s good to take
advantage of the opportunities Newman
offers to get to know Him.”
Fr. Luke said he believes Baker
would make a good servant of the
Church.
“In Joe, I see a really good commitment
to prayer,” Fr. Luke said.
“There’s a kind of yearning in him just
to learn and to draw nearer to God and
to really live out God’s will.”
Baker said there are times when he
doubts if this is the right vocation for
him, but believes these times are a
reflection of the devil tempting him.
“Even if I’m not called to the
priesthood, I feel like I’m still doing the
will of God. There’s a shortage of
priests, brothers and sisters everywhere,
but there’s also a shortage of faithful,
committed married people,” he said.
“God needs people to seriously consider
their vocation and see what they’re
called to. If you go to the seminary and
find you’re actually called to the married
life, you can leave the seminary
and give yourself to your wife and children
with more conviction because you
know that this is what you’re called to.
If you don’t give the seminary a shot
although you feel like you might be
called, you’ll always wonder, ‘What
if?’”
Over the last 12 years, nearly 100 young
men and women have gone on from
SJCNC to discern a priestly or religious
vocation.
Vocational Training or Liberal Education?
Dr. Kenneth J. Howell
Education is a costly business.
Every year billions of dollars are spent
on educating and training people from
five to fifty, from preschool to Ph.D.,
with countless human hours spent on
helping young people to prepare for
daily life in the modern world. Americans
believe in the value of education
and Catholics are no different. Education
has clearly been central to the mission
of the Church. It is not too far a
stretch to say that western education, as
we know it today, might not have existed
had it not been for a culture of learning
shaped by the Catholic Church.
Certainly, it is true that universities were
born in a medieval Europe shaped by
Judeo-Christian values transmitted
through the Church.
The true cost of education, however,
cannot be measured in dollars and
14 The Catholic Illini FALL 2009
cents. There is another sense in which
education today is costly. Universities
in the United States have been transformed
in the course of the twentieth
century. I recall reading an introduction
to a translation of ancient Greek
mathematical works in which the
translator noted the increasing specialization
that was occurring in
modern universities. The date of the
preface was 1937. What was a growing
phenomenon in universities of
the 1930s has become accepted fare
today. Today’s research universities
have become bastions of narrow fields
of knowledge in which liberal education
is patently lacking. Their task
largely consists of vocational training
in which students learn very little
outside their chosen specialization.
I believe that at the beginning of
this new millennium vocational training
in our universities has cost us
dearly in the ability of people to collect,
analyze, and synthesize knowledge.
Many educated people know
how to gain knowledge in their own
fields of study but few truly rise to the
level of genuine understanding of how
their specialized field relates to wider
human concerns. There are gaping
holes in educated people’s ability to
think outside a narrow range of questions.
There are many examples of this
lacuna but let me chart one which
may be counterposed to the idea of a
truly liberal education advocated by
the Church. One of the deleterious
effects of specialized vocational training
has to do with the susceptibility of
educated people to intellectual fads
and passing ideologies. I have found
that most students today, as well as
many faculty, often assume that faith
and reason are in contrast and opposi-
CathIlliniAUG09R 7/31/09 3:19 PM Page 16
tion. This is rather astounding to anyone
who knows something of the history
of this broad question because
careful historical study reveals that the
notion of the incompatibility of faith
and reason was an outgrowth of the
late nineteenth century. There were
many examples of the questions and
tensions between faith and reason
dating back into medieval times but
the late modern idea of reason making
faith superfluous has a distinctly
contemporary ring to it.
This relatively recent notion of
reason being opposed to faith is why
John Paul II reaffirmed the long tradition
of the Church in his Fides et
Ratio. John Paul contended that western
education was originally built on
the assumption that faith and reason
are the two wings that carry us up to
God. And this was no papal fiat. John
Paul was on solid historical and rational
grounds. Indeed, it would not
only be ironic but contradictory for
John Paul to have maintained that
reason and faith are not opposed on
the basis of an arbitrary faith. Western
intellectual history is full of examples
of the compatibility and mutual
support that exists between faith and
reason. Whether it was a Catholic
Galileo or a Lutheran Kepler, early
modern scientists all assumed or
affirmed such compatibility. Whether
it was a Russian Dostoyevsky in the
nineteenth century or an American
Flannery O’Connor in the twentieth,
many literary artists of the modern
world have engaged the intellect with
striking creativity precisely because of
their faith.
How does this high-brow
rehearsal of history relate to where we
are today? Many students illustrate
the point everyday. I am often asked
MANY EDUCATED PEOPLE KNOW
HOW TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE IN
THEIR OWN FIELDS OF STUDY BUT
FEW TRULY RISE TO THE LEVEL OF
GENUINE UNDERSTANDING OF
HOW THEIR SPECIALIZED FIELD
RELATES TO WIDER HUMAN CON-
CERNS. THERE ARE GAPING HOLES
IN EDUCATED PEOPLE’S ABILITY TO
THINK OUTSIDE A NARROW RANGE
OF QUESTIONS.
by Catholic students how they should
respond to their peers when asked for
the grounds of their beliefs. For
example, asked why Catholics are
opposed to abortion, a student of
faith may respond that abortion is a
form of murder. The non-religious
peer then may counter that such a
belief is simply the Catholic’s faith
and therefore cannot be persuasive or
even admitted as evidence. Here the
Catholic may be stymied because
he/she too assumes with the modern
secularist that faith has no rational
grounds beyond arbitrary assertion.
The Catholic is silenced because of a
lack of understanding of how faith
grows out of and is the perfection of
our rational ability as human beings.
The task of a truly liberal education
is enormous but the cost of not
learning to think is even more devastating.
That is why we have an Institute
of Catholic Thought at the University
of Illinois. That is why I teach
today. Everyday I have the privilege of
accompanying my students in their
intellectual growth. A couple of
semesters ago, I had a young lady in
my Introduction to Catholicism class
who wanted write a paper on the
parable of the Pharisee and the tax
collector in Luke 18:9-14. When she
told her friends of her topic, they all
said that she couldn’t find enough to
write ten pages on six verses in the
Bible. I told her she could write thirty
pages if she had enough time but
ten pages would be fine. At the end
of the semester she handed a twelvepage
paper. More importantly, it was
not what was on the page that stayed
with me. It was how the engagement
with truth had touched this young
woman’s life.
A close friend of hers is a doctoral
student in microbiology. Over
the course of two years I have come
to appreciate this young man as a
man of reason and faith. While pursuing
his Ph.D. in biology, he
enrolled in our graduate program in
theology. Many questions and conversations
later I have observed a
flowering of this man’s thinking. He
is clearly not limited to the narrow
confines of technical biology. He is
able to think from broader and wider
perspectives as he asks how his specialized
knowledge relates to the larger
questions of humanity to which
the Catholic faith responds with affirmation.
To me, these two young
friends, along with hundreds like
them, make working at St. John’s
Institute of Catholic Thought a joy.
In addition to being the Director of
the Institute of Catholic Thought,
Dr. Howell is also an Adjunct Associate
Professor in the Program for the Study
of Religion at the University of Illinois.
This academic year he is teaching two
credit courses: Intro to Catholicism
(RLST 127) in the fall and Modern
Catholic Thought (RLST 447) in the
spring.
