Playing the lute in the garden Until last summer, I thought of the lute as a musical instrument. However, the need to level my lawn (after 30-odd years of thinking about it !!!) caused me to discover there was another instrument, or better, tool, which is called a ‘lute’. (Search the internet for ‘garden lute’, ‘lawn lute’ or ‘levelling lute’, and you will find this device is used to help level lawns.) So I decided buy one and experiment, along with about a half ton of top soil (50% sharp sand, bearing in mind the clay at Merley) and plenty of seed. An afternoon of work left me with the top soil spread across my lawn and a lot of patches filled with the topsoil and seed mix. You never know, perhaps next year I’ll have a flat lawn.
