Momentum
2008 HAS BEEN ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT
YEAR FOR THE COMPANY, HIGHLIGHTED
BY THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF A SPECIAL
VIRGIN BLUE IN SPECIE DIVIDEND, THE SALE
OF THE NEW ZEALAND RAIL OPERATIONS
AND THE ACQUISITION AND INTEGRATION
OF THE BALTRANS GROUP.
Revenue from continuing operations grew
strongly, increasing from AU$4.9 billion to
AU$5.6 billion. Organic revenue growth was
again a key feature of the result with Australia
growing 7.5 percent and Asia 12.5 percent.
The continuing growth in organic revenue
reflects the attraction and benefit of the
company’s integrated business model, and our
ability to drive lower supply chain costs for our
customer base. The company expects organic
growth to be a sustainable ongoing strength,
which will be further complemented by the
cross border supply chain capabilities of
the Toll Global Forwarding network.
Following the in specie Virgin Blue special
dividend and sale of the New Zealand rail and
ferry operations, the company has been
restructured into three major operating
divisions namely Australia and New Zealand
– Integrated Transport and Logistics; Asia
Contract Logistics and Toll Global Forwarding.
Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand Integrated
Transport and Logistics, is the largest of the
three divisions, contributing over 80 percent of
the Group’s revenue.
Highlights for the year were many, including
the finalisation of the long-term domestic
freight operations agreement with Virgin
Blue; winning of significant new contracts in
retail, mining and automotive; establishment
of Toll Dnata – our aviation logistics joint
venture with Emirates; transferral of the
Jetcare maintenance facilities to Virgin
Blue; and continuation of the integration
and rationalisation of the former Patrick
warehousing and logistics activities.
In Australia, we acquired six businesses
which have been integrated nicely into our
existing operations including:
Victorian Express
Westrans
Extra Transport
Golden Riverland Express
SkyNet Worldwide Express
Western Australian-based Courier Australia
to expand and grow our capabilities
The focus in New Zealand is firmly on contract
logistics and road and rail forwarding, and the
recent acquisition of United Carriers, one of
Northland’s largest freight companies with
annual sales of AU$40 million, is an example
of our ongoing commitment.
TOLL GROUP
Asia Contract Logistics
Oil and Gas Logistics
Supply Chain Management
Distribution of Bulk Materials
Defence Logistics
Project Logistics
Specialist Logistics
Marine Logistics
Comparative results have been restated for consistency into the three divisions.
Toll Asia Contract Logistics
The second of our three divisions, is the
amalgamation of our 2006 acquisition of
SembCorp Logistics, and our October 2007
takeover of Sembawang Kimtrans, the
Singapore-based integrated logistics and
marine transportation specialist.
With a new management restructure and the
appointment of Wayne Hunt, a long-standing
and senior Toll executive as CEO and
investment in key assets, the division
experienced excellent growth in offshore
marine and mining logistics operations,
government defence logistics, and major
contract wins and renewals – a clear indication
of Toll’s increasing momentum in Asia.
Toll Global Forwarding
Toll Global Forwarding has been formed as a
direct response to customers’ growing global
logistics needs. The recent acquisitions of the
Hong Kong based BALtrans in March 2008 and
the Australian-based Gluck in June 2008
have allowed us to span our network across
Australia, Asia, US, Europe, Africa and
the Middle East, to build a consolidated
offering across the Group with revenues
of approximately AU$1 billion.
Toll’s unique integrated business model is well
and truly operating in the international arena
and will continue to service our customers’
more complex and ever growing needs.
I take this opportunity
to thank our staff for
their continued
commitment and efforts
and our customers for
their ongoing support
ETS – What it Means to Toll
ADDING TO TOLL’S ONGOING REPORTING AND ENVIRONMENT
MANAGEMENT COMMITMENTS IS THE RECENTLY RELEASED
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT’S CARBON POLLUTION REDUCTION
SCHEME (CPRS) GREEN PAPER. THE PAPER PROVIDES INSIGHT TO
HOW AN EMISSION TRADING SCHEME MIGHT WORK IN AUSTRALIA
AND IDENTIFIES THE EMISSION IMPACT AREAS OF EACH SECTOR
PROVIDING SOME CLARITY OF AUSTRALIA’S ONGOING EMISSION
REDUCTION MANAGEMENT INTENTIONS.
The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) as it is now known
replaces the Emission Trading Scheme previously mentioned and
maintains the focus of trading in emissions above the expected long
term emission target of 60% emission reduction (of 2000 levels) by
2050. A number of interim targets for given periods will be provided
by the Australian Government (expected October 2008) which will
meet both Australian long term requirements and interface to
international commitments.
HOW WILL TOLL BE IMPACTED?
The transport sector will be included in the CPRS and includes direct
combustion of fuel in the road, rail, domestic aviation and domestic
shipping areas. It is the government’s intention that placing a dollar
value on tonne of carbon emitted will increase the upstream cost of
fuel. For a government carbon permit cost of $20 per T/CO2-e the cost
of diesel will rise by some 5.5 cents per litre.
In the first year of program implementation (expected 2010), Toll will
have to purchase a carbon credit for each tonne of carbon emission
Toll Transitions’ Goes ‘Hybrid’
IN LINE WITH TOLL GROUPS’ COMMITMENT TO REDUCING THE
COMPANY’S ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT, TOLL TRANSITIONS’
HAS SUPPLEMENTED ITS CAR FLEET IN VICTORIA AND THE ACT
WITH THE TOYOTA PRIUS HYBRID IN A BID TO REDUCE CO 2
EMISSIONS. THE PRIUS HAS A 5 STAR ‘GREEN’ RATING FROM THE
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT AND OFFERS EXCEPTIONAL FUEL
ECONOMY THROUGH A COMBINATION OF A PETROL ENGINE AND
AN ELECTRIC MOTOR.
Toll Transitions has a fleet of three vehicles in Victoria, and two in the
ENVIRONMENT
it generates from the use of fuel in the sectors mentioned above.
Emissions generated above the interim government targets will
require additional purchases of carbon permits; conversely reducing
emissions below the target allows the sale of permits all of which
takes place under an auctioning process.
It is important to note that in each emission target compliance year
Toll must be capable of providing carbon permits that satisfy the
volume of emissions below the target level.
Emissions generated from electricity, refrigerant gas and waste come
under two separate definitions; upstream and downstream emissions
and in both cases incur additional cost by the supplier or service
provider as they will cause greater emissions by providing the energy
source or service.
GOING FORWARD
There are a number of uncertainties circulating the impact the CPRS
will have on ensuring equality across Australia’s emission sectors;
these may be supported by tax and or
carbon permit incentives particularly in our
industry that is both technologically and
geographically challenged.
If you have any queries, please contact
the Group Environment and Energy
Manager, Pierre Lauwers on
ACT which on average travel approximately 80,000 km per year. It is
estimated that driving the Prius fleet will result in a 45.5 percent
reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per year. Additionally, Toll
Transitions will benefit from cost savings of approximately $2,500 per
year, per vehicle in fuel costs. It’s a win-win for the environment as
well as for Toll Transitions.
Toll Transitions plans to progressively replace a number of its cars in
other states and Territories with the Toyota Prius over the next two
years as the leases come up for renewal.
NEW ZEALAND
Toll NZ Networks Enters ACC Partnership Program
A NEW PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM HAS BEEN AGREED BETWEEN
ACC AND TOLL NZ LIMITED.
The ownership changes meant that Toll NZ Limited had to reapply
to enter into the ACC Partnership Program by 1 July 2008, which has
now been done.
The program allows the company to ‘stand in the shoes’ of ACC,
managing workplace injuries for employees and providing entitlements
under the Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2001
in respect of work-related personal injuries and illnesses.
The ACC Partnership Program encourages employers to take
responsibility for their own:
workplace health and safety;
injury management, which includes
rehabilitation, and
claims management of employees’ work
injuries.
The ACC Partnership Program will allow us to:
minimise our own specific costs of workrelated
personal injury, and
raise the level of our workplace health and
safety management.
the achievement of entry at secondary level was a remarkable result.
The long-term plan is to include other Toll New Zealand business units
in the partnership program to further maximise the benefits.
Group General Manager Greg Miller says, "Congratulations to the
Southdown Team for producing excellent HSE standards to achieve an
audit pass and set Toll NZ on the path with the ACC Partnership Program."
In addition to this achievement Toll Tranzlink (a division of Toll Networks)
was the only business unit in New Zealand to exceed all four HSE KPIs
(LTIFR, MTIFR, Duration Rate and Severity Rate) for 2007/08.
available?”
Toll Tranzlink management would like to thank all staff for participating
and especially to those who covered while
their colleagues were in training around the
The return on investment should be evident
leading up to this year’s peak season over the
Christmas period, seeing fewer claims, less
Toll Wins Major Cadbury Contract
Left Greg Miller Toll NZ, right Malcolm Burns Cadbury Confectionary.
TOLL NZ HAS WON THE PRIZE ACCOUNT TO HANDLE
DISTRIBUTION FOR THE CADBURY CONFECTIONERY LIMITED
(CCL) MANUFACTURING PLANT IN DUNEDIN AS WELL AS CADBURY’S
THIRD-PARTY LOGISTICS (3PL) SITES IN DUNEDIN AND AUCKLAND.
The contract covers all linehaul, metro delivery and container work.
This is the first time this work has gone to market in 16 years and is one
of the ‘gem’ accounts in the South Island, if not New Zealand, and came
to Toll after a rigorous tender process conducted by Cadbury.
Announcing the success of the deal, Toll
Tranzlink Group General Manager Greg
Miller said that it was a huge feather in the
cap for Toll to be selected as service provider
for a brand he described as ‘iconic’.
“CCL are a market-leading iconic brand since 1824, with some 50,000
employees in 60 countries, and the standards they expect of their
service providers is exacting. They already have some long term
relationships with Toll business units in Australia, and these relationships
assisted in getting us over the line with our bid.
NEW ZEALAND
“Nonetheless we were required to put a great deal of innovative
thinking in our RFP (request for proposal) preparation and to bid against
an initial list of 13 potential providers, which was shortlisted to three
for the final presentations and negotiations.
“The relationships that have been forged with the Cadbury team during
the eight-month RFP and scoping process were important in our
success with Neil Carraher, Wilson Pollock and Murray Atkin being
a key part of this process.”
Greg Miller said that the primary advantages CCL saw in the Toll bid
were the understanding Toll demonstrated in the Cadbury business, the
innovative equipment design (64 pallet mezz floor units with monitored
temperature management) and the Information Visibility Package (IVP)
which was customised for Cadbury and the cultural ‘fit’.
“The opportunities for Toll NZ from other parcels of work within the
Cadbury operational need are significant, based on our successful
implementation of this linehaul contract,” said Greg Miller.
He added that a 'pre-start' road show around the main Toll branches
had proved very valuable in sharing the goals and challenges of this
contract with the entire team and provided a heightened sense
of ownership across the Toll business for this important new customer.
Foster’s CI a Great Safety Initiative
IN THE SEPTEMBER 2007 ISSUE OF TOLL
TODAY WE ADVISED THAT FOSTERS
AND TOLL (IN WINGFIELD ADELAIDE, SA)
BEGAN A CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT (CI)
PROGRAM – WHEREBY THE TEAM WOULD
GENERATE IDEAS TO IMPROVE SAFETY,
COST, QUALITY AND SERVICE.
Today, we can confirm the program’s success
as we can see how simple Safety CI ideas
can turn into real winners.
Having a safer workplace is always a goal at
Toll and achieving trends that are in the right
direction is something we all have to work
very diligently at. The real root cause of why
a safety result has improved is generally
seen at the coalface. A classic example of
this was when Toll Contract Logistics
Equipment Coordinator Mark Nykamp, came
Key Features:
3000 sqm Warehouse
300 sqm Office
Located in close proximity to major
customer’s assembly plant
Environmental Initiatives include irrigation
and amenities systems run off rain water
Superior fire protection system
Enhanced security including CCTV, access
control and roaming patrols
Up-graded all PCs, laptops,
communications equipment
The relocation to the facility was very smooth
with no delays to our customer’s operations
during the period of transition.
up with an idea on alerting all people around
forklifts of the forklift’s safe zone.
The Toll / Foster’s site is usually bustling with
vehicle activity as trucks need to be loaded
and unloaded by forklifts on a daily basis.
As we know the combination of these two
types of vehicles can be extremely dangerous
if traffic plans, safe zones and high visibility
clothing are not adhered to. The site had a
constant problem with people not obeying
the safe zones of forklifts.
The successful CI idea implemented to
address this issue was to fix signs to the
forklifts that clearly stated the safe zone
(see picture). The success has been on three
counts:
It clearly shows the safe zone alleviating
any confusion;
It has given the forklift driver a tool
to use to manage the safe zone around
the forklift; and
It clearly demonstrates the commitment
we all have to safety.
Well done to all involved in getting this simple
idea working and we look forward to seeing
more of these signs around.
AUSTRALIA
Toll Contract Logistics Foster’s Brisbane DC Go-Live
AFTER OVER TWO YEARS OF PLANNING, WHEN 19 MAY 2008
ROLLED AROUND, THE ATMOSPHERE WAS ELECTRIC. THE
REASON FOR THIS WAS THAT BUSINESS MANAGER BRETT ROY
AND HIS TEAM WERE FULLY PREPARED FOR WHAT WAS ABOUT TO
BEAR DOWN UPON THEM.
Sunday 19 May was the ‘Go-Live’ date for Foster’s newest DC in
Heathwood, Brisbane, a 20,000 sqm state-of-the-art facility. The
purpose of the new DC was part of Foster’s network rationalisation
program whereby 47 distribution and manufacturing centres were
being consolidated to 21.
Project ALT (Australian Logistics Transformation) has been a
work-in-progress for Foster’s for over two years now. It was born out
of necessity when Foster’s acquired Southcorp Limited and Beringer
Blass wine estates, effectively transforming Foster’s into a multibeverage
organisation, with a range of beer, wine and spirits, and
a new outlook on operations from the previous paradigm of brewer
and bulk beer distributor.
The New Heathwood DC with Pedestrian Air Bridge.
Prior to the opening of the new DC, Toll Contract Logistics had been
running the predominantly beer based operation out of Yeerongpilly in
Brisbane. In May 2007, the Yeerongpilly operation introduced circa
1000 wine and spirit SKUs into their operation in preparation for what
was to come, in 12 months time.
This integration enabled the team at Yeerongpilly to get to grips with
the complex new range, as well as a host of new customers with very
different service expectations, to add to this, the existing Warehouse
Management System (WMS) being used by Foster’s, was to be
transferred to Yeerongpilly for the wine picking operation.
Heathwood was the next step up for the team at Yeerongpilly, not only
was the volume going to increase four-fold, but a new state-of-theart
voice pick WMS was to be introduced for picking of all products
in the DC.
Jereme Baker, Warehouse Operations Manager had to cope with
an influx of new staff, whilst still running the Yeerongpilly shed, as well
as devoting his own time to testing the new system, which was
to include a beer layer picker, a wonderful tool, not previously used
in Yeerongpilly.
The Heathwood layer picker being tested.
Jason Wowbwell, Distribution Operations Manager had to cope with
a large increase in Willcall operators (Transport carriers on behalf of
Customers) who had previously collected bulk volume from Yatala
Brewery, these volumes were generally full pallets, but the sheer
numbers meant an influx of traffic from Yatala, not only collecting
stock, but also delivering replenishment stock. Traffic management
and scheduling was a massive challenge, and not without its teething
problems, but Jason knocked it on the head within the first two weeks
of the ramp-up.
And as if a new system and brand new warehouse was not enough to
contend with, one of the Willcall operators went bust on the second
day of go-live, effectively rendering 119 BWS stores without a means
to get orders, Brett and his team pulled out all the necessary stops
to arrange for these customers to become converted to a normal
‘arranged delivery’ service, but it meant instead of bulk picking the
orders for the carrier, all of these outlets would have discretely picked
orders, putting a huge demand on the warehouse pickers.
After just three weeks into the new operation and it was already running
like clockwork, a senior contingent of Foster’s staff visited the site on
3 June 2008, Michael Brooks, Chief Supply Officer led the contingent,
and congratulated Brett and his team for a fantastic job, well done.
Let’s raise our glasses to Brett Roy and his team for initiating
a prosperous partnership between Toll and Foster’s. Long may it last.
Each year, around 1600 people die on
The organisers of Fatality Free Friday believe
that if drivers consciously think about road
5.3 deaths – could be reduced to zero.
TOLL PRIORITY TECHSERV HAS RECENTLY REACHED ANOTHER
MILESTONE BY ACHIEVING, YET AGAIN, AN OUTSTANDING
RESULT FOR A CUSTOMER. A CALL WAS RECEIVED FROM ONE OF
AUSTRALIA’S MAJOR BANKS TO URGENTLY PROCESS AND DELIVER
APPROXIMATELY 3000 EFTPOS TERMINALS. THE GEOGRAPHIC
REACH WAS TO LOCATIONS AUSTRALIA-WIDE, FROM CAPITAL
CITIES TO REMOTE COUNTRY LOCATIONS SUCH AS JULIA CREEK,
A SMALL TOWN 653 KMS WEST OF TOWNSVILLE IN QUEENSLAND.
With the assistance of Melbourne operations, 2616 terminals were
picked up and processed within 5 hours. This included:
Scanning the serial numbers
Matching to the terminal identification
Combining other components such as paper roles and merchant letters
Packing for shipment
Generating consignment notes
Batch packing by receiver destination
All the terminals were delivered overnight Australia-wide. One of the
bank’s large corporate customers contacted them to enquire how the
whole despatch and delivery process was managed. They were so
impressed with the efficient and timely rollout of the terminals they were
considering changing from their existing express freight supplier and
utilising the services of Toll Priority. This is truly a fantastic achievement
which was accomplished by the solid team in Melbourne and Toll
Since its inception, the TechServ has grown significantly to a team of
over 1000, including dedicated staff, installers and agents across
In addition to this we hold stock in 31 strategic locations in order to
Toll Liquids Achieves Contract Extension
AS A DIRECT CONSEQUENCE OF A CLOSE WORKING
RELATIONSHIP BUILT ON MUTUAL RESPECT AND TRUST, TOLL
AND CARGILL HAVE REACHED THE UNUSUAL POSITION OF
EXTENDING A THREE YEAR CONTRACT FOR A FURTHER TWO YEARS,
EVEN THOUGH THE EXISTING CONTRACT IS BARELY 18 MONTHS
OLD.
Antony Borgese, Supply Chain Solutions Manager – Refined Oils from
Cargill stated, “I am extremely happy with Toll’s ability to grow with us
whilst we have aggressively pursued new business within the very
competitive RBD (Refined, Bleached & Deodorised) Oil market
segment.” Antony also said, “Toll has demonstrated a real commitment
to Cargill, which has included quickly responding to all of our customer
issues and doubling the number of trailers initially dedicated to the
task.” As a consequence, Antony said that Cargill felt justified in their
decision to extend a contract that had barely reached the half
way point.
Toll Liquids National Business Development Manager Paul Milo was
equally supportive of Cargill stating that the customer has consistently
treated Toll as a partner in their quest to grow the RBD Oil segment.
Paul Milo said, “There have been minor teething problems which truly
tested the linehaul business at times, as Cargill grew at quite
a staggering pace. I have been impressed with Garry O’Connor’s team
located out at Wagga, who just seemed to be able to find the
equipment and drivers to consistently maintain a high level of service
regardless of what challenges Cargill was able to throw at them.”
Apart from doubling the size of the trailer fleet in less than six months,
Garry’s team has also faced other food-grade and product specific
problems, such as how do you prevent the oil solidifying in the barrel
en route from Newcastle to Adelaide a distance of 1600 km, with wind
chill factors of –10 degrees Celsius and a product that starts to go hard
if its core temperature falls below 45 degrees Celsius.
The solution included the use of lagged (insulated) barrels, heat-intransit
and a bit of old-school commonsense including the use of
rollaway tarpaulins across the top of the tanker to minimise heat loss.
The system enabled Toll to deliver the product to the final customer
with a core temperature in the high 50s – a loss of approximately
5 degrees Celsius and an excellent result by all accounts.
As a consequence of the contract extension, Toll Liquids National
Fleet Manager Peter Pace has also been busy working out the
specifications for another two new trailers to be dedicated to the
work. Given the unique requirements of the Cargill product, special
attention has been placed on insulating the barrels and ensuring that
they have a heat-in-transit (HIT) system that can operate independently
of the prime mover.
Peter said, “The new HIT system will provide greater flexibility for the
driver and allow for unscheduled rest stops, without the risk of the
product solidifying in the tank regardless of the outside temperatures
which often fall below 1 degree Celsius during winter.
“I am looking forward to improving the relationship already forged
with our partner Cargill and I am confident that Toll will be well
placed to continue responding to all of their needs as they continue
to make significant inroads into their chosen market segment,”
concluded Peter.
Should a Toll business unit come across an opportunity involving the
movement of a bulk liquid product by road tanker, whether it be fuel,
lubes, food grade product or water, it would be appreciated if the lead
could be passed onto:
“These depots are now in a position to issue national qualifications
after establishing the NQX College at their site. This phase of our
expansion is a major step forward,” he said.
The implementation of NQX College has been recognised by the
Queensland Minister of Education as a great initiative for education. Our
customers have commented on the changes at these depots since the
rollout commenced in April 2008. The creation of the NQX Performance
Standards has raised the skill level of our employees, enabling us to
provide a better service to our customers and each other.
Bill said, “The most positive feedback was from Darryl Munro, who
commented that this training will give small depots like his the ability
to cross train our employees and increase the depot’s overall
capability.”
This comment reinforces a key goal of NQX College; that is to give
each depot the capability to use their experienced employees to train
their own employees in the NQX Performance Standards.
Toll Fleet – Brian's Pedal to the Metal
WHEN BRIAN BERTWISTLE STARTED DRIVING TRUCKS AS
A 20-YEAR-OLD, THE LAST THING HE EXPECTED WAS THAT
HE’D STILL BE WORKING FOR THE SAME COMPANY 50 YEARS
LATER. OR THAT HE WOULD BE MADE A MEMBER OF THE ORDER OF
AUSTRALIA FOR HIS SERVICES TO THE TRANSPORT INDUSTRY.
“It’s a terrific honour, I’m over the moon,” said Brian Bertwistle, who
lives at Palm Beach. “I’ve seen other people get them but never in my
wildest dreams thought it would happen to me.
”Working as a driver delivering films to suburban cinemas in Brisbane,
the then teenage lad saw his livelihood threatened by the rise of
television, but doing national service in the mid 1950s, he heard about
the company KW Thomas Interstate Transport that needed drivers
and so signed up.
After two years, he was promoted to a leading hand on the docks and
then moved through roles as foreman and operations manager to
become executive director of corporate services. The company his
Nasho mate had said “would go places” grew too, becoming TNT
before that part of it was sold to Toll.
“As the company developed, so did opportunities for me,” Brian
Bertwistle said. With the support of his employer, he was instrumental
in getting young people and women into the trucking industry. One of
his ideas was the establishment of a Transport and Logistics Careers
Forum which was taken around to high schools to show students the
opportunities available in trucking and to institute a vocational
training system similar to an apprenticeship.
“People stumble into our industry, there was no organised career
path,” Brian Bertwistle said. “People only see the trucks on the road
but there is a heck of a lot of careers behind each one.”
He said the transport industry was now highly computerised and
offered job opportunities in marketing, sales and information
technology. Women take up many of these support roles to the extent
that they now comprise 50 percent of trucking industry employees.
“It is such a busy job, once you get in, you stay in,” he said. “It gets in
supporting the Trucksafe accreditation system which covers training
of drivers, mechanical and operational matters.
He said many large companies, such as supermarkets and mines,
were now requiring their goods be transported by businesses with
Trucksafe accreditation. “The element that just wants to do their own
New Fleet Workshop at Perth International Airport
TOLL FLEET PERTH OPERATIONS ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE
THE LONG AWAITED FINISHING TOUCHES TO THEIR NEW ‘STATE-
OF-THE-ART’ WORKSHOP LOCATED AT 19 GROGAN ROAD, PERTH
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. CENTRALLY LOCATED IN THE HUB
OF TRANSPORT AND WAREHOUSING BUSINESSES IN PERTH, THE
WORKSHOP IS HANDILY PLACED TO MOST TOLL DIVISIONS AND
IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE MAIN ARTERIAL HEAVY TRAFFIC
TO ATTRACT FUTURE BUSINESS GROWTH.
For those that have had the opportunity to set eyes upon the previous
workshops, the latest site comes as a blessing not only for the staff
employed there but also to the range of Toll internal business units and
certain external customers.
The workshop’s scope of operation includes regular servicing and
repairs, welding and fabrication, 24 hour breakdown service, static
line and platforms for roof repairs and two rollover truck service
pit lanes for quick servicing. In addition, the workshop is fitted out with
a drive-thru fully automated truck and trailer wash that is
environmentally friendly that meets all statutory and local requirements.
The workshop operates from 6.00 am to 8.00 pm Monday to Fridays,
and 6.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays. There are 28 mechanical staff
made up of 12 mechanics, 4 trades assistants, 8 apprentices,
3 boilermakers-welders, 1 truckwash operator and 7 support staff.
Gary Cole, Toll Fleet WA Branch Manager is quoted as saying, “There
is no denying the shortage of experienced mechanical staff in Perth in
the present economic climate and Toll Fleet have also found themselves
short staffed at times but from industry sources commenting on the
new workshop capabilities, it won’t be long before they will attract
candidates looking for better conditions and an employer that will
reward them for effort.”
Toll Fleet would like to take this opportunity to thank the Toll Property
Group for all their assistance in designing, formulating and carrying
out the building project and in particular Charlie Marulli for his efforts
and guidance during this period. It seemed the time would never come
when we could actually move onto the site and in hindsight the actual
building time spent in erecting the workshop with construction
booming in WA was reasonably good.
TAX TIME – Tax Tips to Tackle Your 2008 Income Tax Return
WITH THE END OF FINANCIAL YEAR, MOST OF US ARE AGAIN
THINKING OF ‘TAX TIME’, AND MORE THAN EVER TAXPAYERS
SHOULD BE VIGILANT IN DECLARING ALL ASSESSABLE INCOME
AND CLAIMING ELIGIBLE PERSONAL TAX DEDUCTIONS IN LIGHT OF
SIGNIFICANT DATA MATCHING CONDUCTED BY THE ATO ANNUALLY
(APPROXIMATELY 50 MILLION TRANSACTIONS).
The following article outlines key ATO areas of interest and handy end
of year tax tips to assist individuals in their ongoing tax compliance,
whilst identifying tax planning opportunities.
LODGEMENT DATE – 31 OCTOBER 2008
Failure to lodge on time may give rise to non-deductible late lodgement
penalties. Note: individuals lodging through a registered tax agent will
have a later lodgement due date in line with tax agent lodgement
programs (individuals lodging with a tax agent for the first time revert
to a 31 October due date).
Personal tax returns can be lodged online via the ‘E-tax’ system,
available for download from the ATO website. Traditional paper
returns (ie Tax Packs) are also available though may take longer
to process.
RECORD KEEPING
Records are normally required to be retained for tax purposes for
at least five years. Note special requirements apply in certain areas.
For example, in the case of capital gains tax, records may be held
for longer periods (ie purchase contracts).
WHAT IS THE ATO FOCUSING ON THIS YEAR?
The ATO has flagged several key items in its 2008 Compliance Program
aimed at ensuring taxpayers continue to report the correct amount
of income and allowable deductions.
CAPITAL GAINS ON DISPOSAL OF PROPERTY AND OTHER ASSETS
The ATO intends to closely scrutinise asset transactions. It has
expanded its data matching projects to now access data on asset
sales from state title and revenue offices, securities exchanges and
share registries as well as reports from managed funds. Therefore,
you should keep all relevant records to support details provided in
your return. Remember – the five year record retention rules do not
apply to capital transactions.
WORK-RELATED EXPENSES (WRES)
The ATO’s compliance program for 2008 also focuses on over-claiming
of employees' work-related expenses. Typically these expenses
include travel, uniforms, subscriptions, union fees, home office
expenses, and self-education. When working out your work-related
expenses there are some simple rules to help you get it right:
you must have incurred the expense in the year you are claiming
it for;
the expense must be work-related (ie not private) either in whole
or in part, if the expense has been reimbursed by an employer
it cannot be claimed;
receiving an allowance does not automatically entitle you to
a deduction; and
if your total work-related expenses exceed $300, you need written
evidence to support them, this includes log books or diaries to claim
part-business use (ie home office expenses).
HIGH WEALTH INDIVIDUALS (‘HWI’) – INCOME NOT FULLY REPORTED
The ATO intends to examine the tax affairs of top public company
executives who are considered ‘at risk’. This follows an earlier review
of HWIs with total remuneration of over $1 million and in the ATO’s
view, have not fully reported their income.
The review will mainly focus on income from employee share benefits
such as options and rights issues, as well as cash bonuses and nonincome
capital benefits (ie real property).
RENTAL PROPERTIES
With plans to review 6000 ‘at-risk’ cases, the ATO continues to devote
significant resources to this item given the large amounts of revenue
involved. Areas the ATO looks out for include repairs versus capital
improvements, ensuring the property is a bona fide rental property,
and interest on property loans have been correctly claimed.
Key focus areas:
incorrect apportionment of interest deductions;
claims for capital works that exceed the construction expenditure;
initial repair or renovation costs incorrectly claimed as repairs and
maintenance instead of being attributed to the capital cost of the
property;
borrowing expenses claimed in a single year (instead of being
spread over five years); and
incorrect return schedules.
DIVIDENDS AND INTEREST
ATO matches information with external sources to ensure taxpayers
report interest and dividend income. To avoid trouble here is to include
all such income in your return – claiming available franking credits
and / or TFN withholding amounts, and retain supporting documents
such as bank and company dividend statements.
AGGRESSIVE TAX PLANNING
Taxpayers should continue to be cautious about year-end tax schemes,
and carefully consider all the information in the market on this type
of higher-risk investment.
This includes accessing product rulings and taxpayer alerts issued by
the ATO. Do note ATO product rulings are not intended to be any
guarantee of an investment’s profitability.
Tax Planning Tips
SALARY PACKAGING AND FRINGE BENEFITS
Salary packaging continues to be an effective alternative to a full cash
salary, particularly if you are on the top marginal tax rate. Some of the
most common items to consider include superannuation and motor
vehicles.
In addition, Toll is entitled to claim GST credits on most GST-able
benefits, making the salary sacrificing arrangement more cost
effective. Employees should ensure an effective salary sacrifice
arrangement to forego salary or bonuses for fringe benefits or
additional superannuation contributions are entered into prior to
earning the income.
Note also salary sacrificed fringe benefits may be reportable on your

payment summary hence must be reported in your tax return. This may
impact payments including Medicare levy and superannuation
surcharge, child care payments, HELP, and government benefits.
FAMILY TAX BENEFIT (‘FTB’)
FTB is available to eligible families (including sole parents) with
children.
To be eligible for FTB, the following criteria must be satisfied:
You must
have provided care to a dependent child.
You must have cared for the child for a minimum of 10 percent of the
assessment period (the period covered by your FTB claim) if you
shared the care of the dependent child with another person who
is not your current spouse.
You must have satisfied the Australian residency requirements for
family assistance purposes.
FTB can be claimed:
as a direct payment from Centrelink;
as a lump sum via your tax return; or
periodically through reduced PAYG withholding tax
MINOR TAX-FREE THRESHOLD
Minors (children under 18 years of age and unmarried) can receive
$416 as unearned income or trust distributions without being subject
to penalty tax. They will also be eligible for the low income offset of
$750 which effectively increases the $416 tax-free threshold to $1552.
Income from full-time occupation will not count towards
the threshold.
SUPERANNUATION
Low-income earners can access the government co-contribution at
150 per cent of any personal contributions after tax contributions
made by a taxpayer, up to a maximum of $1500. To be eligible for the
full co-contribution of $1500, the taxpayer’s total income must not
exceed $30,342 for the 2008 tax year, and phasing out between $30,342
and $60,342.
CAPITAL GAINS TAX (DISCOUNT AVAILABLE)
Capital gains on investments held for over 12 months are eligible for a
50 percent discount. Note available capital losses are applied to the
grossed up value (ie pre-discount).
MAXIMISE YOUR MOTOR VEHICLE DEDUCTIONS
To maximise allowable deductions for car expenses individuals
should consider all methods to calculate their deduction, namely:
the cents per kilometre method, where work related travel is less
than 5000 kilometres;
For work related travel exceeding 5000 kilometres:
Log book method;
1/3 actual expenses
12-week register method
Note claims for work-related travel exceeding 5000 kilometres are
allowable to the extent log book, odometer readings and receipts
were maintained. Log books prepared over 12 consecutive weeks are
valid for five years.
AUSTRALIA
Work-related travel includes travel between two places of work
or employment or where your vehicle is used to transport carry bulky
tools or equipment.
IDENTIFY ALL ELIGIBLE DEPRECIABLE TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Depreciable items costing $300 or less and used predominantly for
work purposes can be deducted in full. Eligible items include tools,
calculators, briefcases, computer equipment and technical books.
More costly items such as personal computers and portable printers
may be written off over several years in line with ATO depreciation
rates to the extent it is used for work purposes.
Note there is no need to pro rate the deduction if it was acquired part
way through the year.
** Changes in the Federal Budget have disallowed depreciation deductions for
portable electronic devices (‘PED’) acquired via salary sacrifice from 7.00 pm on 13
May 2008. PEDs acquired before this date will be eligible for a depreciation deduction
for the 2008 / 09 tax year only (last year for deductions).
MEDICARE LEVY SURCHARGE RELIEF
An additional one per cent surcharge taxed on taxable income
is levied on married or de facto couples with a combined
income in excess of $100,000, individuals – $50,000, if they do not have
adequate private health insurance cover.
Note the income threshold also varies where there are dependants,
or the parties are separated.
To have adequate cover, families and individuals must be fully covered
under the policy for the whole of the income year.
Taxpayers affected should consider the cost of taking out private
health cover against the additional tax levied as a cost saving
exercise.
We trust you have found the above information useful in reviewing
your personal tax position.
THE NEW BENGALURU (FORMERLY KNOWN AS BANGALORE)
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FINALLY BEGAN OPERATIONS ON 24
MAY 2008 AFTER TWO MONTHS OF DELAYS. ST-AIRPORT SERVICES
PTE LTD (STARS), A SUBSIDIARY OF ST LOGISTICS PTE LTD IN
SINGAPORE, WAS IN THE THICK OF ACTION AS IT PROVIDED INTO-
PLANE REFUELING SERVICE AT THE AIRPORT. THE OPERATION WAS
CARRIED OUT THROUGH STARS’ 50 PERCENT JOINT VENTURE (JV)
WITH ONE OF INDIA’S BIGGEST OIL COMPANIES, BHARAT
PETROLEUM. THE JV COMPANY, KNOWN AS BHARAT STARS
SERVICES PVT LTD (BSSPL), WON THE BID TO BE THE FIRST OF
TWO INTO-PLANE REFUELING AGENTS AT THIS AIRPORT IN 2007.
To help kick-start the operations, Abraham David, a STARS Airport
Fuel Depot Manager, was assigned from Singapore to BSSPL during
the start-up period. Abraham is happy to have had the experience
of being amongst the first to provide this essential service at a
greenfield international airport.
“On the night of 23 May 2008, everyone on duty was very eager and
enthusiastic to be part of the team involved in an important occasion
that will surely be remembered for many years to come. The first
aircraft refueled by our BSSPL crew was an Alliance Air Cargo B737F
on 24 May at 0233 hours with an uplift of 5401 litres of JET A-1. The
teamwork, training of the crew and planning saw us through the heavy
action. At the close of the first day of operation, a total of 71 aircraft
“From that momentous day on, BSSPL has provided round-the-clock
service on a 3-cycle shift rotation. It was admittedly not plain sailing
all the time. We encountered problems occasionally, such as air
leaking in the hydrant pits and no fuel flow upon activation. In this
case, our crew had to quickly activate the contingency plan of using
a bowser for refueling so as not to delay the flight. This goes to show
the level of planning and the teamwork.
“There were other problems, yet despite
working within our constraints, I must
compliment our operational staff for their
patience, dedication and commitment in
fulfilling their tasks cheerfully. I have
every reason to believe that BSSPL will
continue to ensure that our customers
are satisfied with the level of service that
we provide.” – Abraham David.
ALBERT TOLL, A CONTAINER VESSEL,
NAMED AFTER THE GROUP’S FOUNDER, IS
THE LATEST AND NEWEST ADDITION TO
THE TOLL ASIA FAMILY OF TUGS, BARGES
AND SHIPS.
She is 97.54m in length, 24.38m in breadth and
6.10m in depth. She has a deck loading of
8.5t/m2, a TEU of 344, geared with two
pedestal cranes that can lift a combined
load of 80 tonnes.
The addition of the 2 X 40 tonne cranes adds
flexibilities to the vessel operations and in
the handling of the cargoes. With the
inclusion of the two cranes on board, she is
self-sufficient and cost saving to her clients.
She is suitable for remote area operations
where there is no permanent port
infrastructure. She does not have to deploy
other cranes for loading and off-loading of
equipment and cargo at any one shore.
She has incorporated the latest proven
technology and instruments to boost her
overall efficiency in marine operations as
well as providing a unique tracking service to
her customers.
She is also linked to the marine centre at Toll
Logistics Asia to keep constant contact with
a 24/7 coverage of real time TV surveillance.
Every position and movement can be
monitored and be recorded for the client
to assess on line in real time. This provides
a very good platform for the clients to monitor
the arrival of their cargoes by allowing them
to assess the exact position of the vessel
in order to generate accurate electronic
documentations and allowing transfer of data
much more easily.
This constant contact allows the Captain /
Master and the Chief Officer of the vessel to
keep close constant communication with the
main control station and also for vessel
tracking purposes.
Her spacious, well-maintained and up-todate
engine room provides the latest and
most effective technology with good emission
control and stable engine that allows greater
expansion capabilities in compliance of the
safety marine regulations.
On top of the technical aspects of Albert Toll,
she also prepares her marine personnel with
places of rest and bathroom facilities. On
board staff are able to catch some good
sleep as to refresh them to carry out their
day-to-day duties more effectively.
With the addition of Albert Toll, Toll Asia is
better able to meet the competitive demand
for marine transportation in South East Asia
where it is one of the leading marine logistics
players here.

a grand finale at Marina, the actual paddock for the Formula One
races.
Aptly called K1 @ Heartlands, this series of events has a plug-and-play
format whereby temporary circuits were set up throughout different
neighborhoods around Singapore. Besides a chance to try out
go-karting at heavily subsidised rates, residents were treated to
STARS Operates in Timor Leste
THE 1ST OF MAY 2008 MARKED
YET ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR
ST-AIRPORT SERVICES (STARS) WHEN OUR
NEW SUBSIDIARY, STARS (TL) UNIPESSOAL,
BEGAN OPERATIONS AT PRESIDENTE
NICOLAU LOBATO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
IN TIMOR LESTE.
STARS (TL) is a company incorporated in
Timor Leste and is wholly owned by STARS of
Toll (Asia) Pte Ltd – A JV between Toll and BP
Aviation. Its mission is to provide high quality
aviation fuel services that is on-specification,
on-time, all the time.
The operations include into-plane refuelling,
importation of aviation fuel, fuel storage and
quality control. The local operations is
managed by STARS (TL) Assistant General
Manager, Florencio Sanchez, a Timorese
STARS (TL) staff being briefed by Florencio Sanchez (right) in one of the regular
continuous training sessions.
who has many years’ experience in aviation
fuelling operations.
In the run-up to getting the site running,
STARS assigned a number of managers to
provide assistance to STARS (TL) in areas
such as training, product assurance and
equipment maintenance. Charles Cumming,
STARS’ Fuel Systems Specialist Manager,
was on site in Dili to conduct training for the
staff and align the quality and safety
processes to meet STARS’ internationallyrecognised
operating standards. He shares
his experience with us.
“My initial apprehension, on knowing about
the past unrest in East Timor, coupled with
the description of Timor being a ‘developing
country’ quickly disappeared as I enjoyed
a satisfying stay in Dili. I expected my
drifting and sprint demos by professional drivers.
Toll logistics was proud to be the official logistics partner with the
organisers to set up all the motor circuits for this series of events.
We provided everything from sets of 3m high concrete barriers and
fencing to water barriers for road closure. All the circuits differ
in sizes with the longest one being a 1.5km motor rally track and the
shortest one being a 60m go-karting circuit. The minimum requirement
for the set up was to finish everything in two days for the smaller
circuits and within three days for the major events, which was quite
a challenge due to the quantity of the material that was required
especially for the major events.
It was an enriching and fulfilling experience thoughout the year for
the Toll Logistics Auto Log team. From the General Manager to the
set-up crew, everyone was involved one way or another, to push the
K1 @ Heartlands to a roaring success.
assignment to be quite challenging as I had
worries about the infrastructure and
implementing the stringent quality
requirements required when managing
aviation fuel. However, our team there, led by
Mr Florencio Sanchez, was raring to go,
eager to learn and as a result, quickly adapted
to our operating requirements. In delivering
aviation fuel, professionalism is the key to
ensuring the highest quality of the fuel
delivered to aircraft coupled with excellent
customer service and support. This was
evident as in my discussions with customers
from the different airlines, who expressed
only confidence in working with STARS (TL).
On the whole, we see a lot of potential in this
operation. Already there are indications of
more airlines interested in putting Dili on
their regular routes.”
ASIA
Inaugural Ceremony of Safety and Steering Committees
Creating a Safety Culture within Toll Logistics (Asia)
ON THE AFTERNOON OF 11 JULY 2008,
TOLL LOGISTICS (ASIA) HELD AN
INAUGURAL CEREMONY TO APPOINT AND
INSTALL MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS TO
THE SAFETY AND STEERING COMMITTEES
FOR THE SINGAPORE TOLL LOGISTICS’
BUSINESSES.
These Committees are organised to spearhead
and drive towards embedding a safety culture
in Toll Logistics (Asia).
In his opening address, President / CEO Toll
Asia Wayne Hunt spoke on the importance
of fostering and embedding a safety culture
in our businesses. He explained to the
committees that commitment and compliance
can only bring down Lost Time Injuries (LTI) by
the most 80 percent. Only by embedding
a safety culture, can zero harm be realised.
He then reiterated his vision of putting in place
the world class systems and processes for our
businesses. Safety Management Systems
driven by Felt Leadership and Employee
Engagement has proven to be the world class
system in checks and balances as it has
enabled many establishments around the
world to achieve safety excellence and build
safety culture in their organisations.
He urged all line managers and supervisors to
be an epitome of this world class system by
taking active action using the 12 principles
of Felt Leadership in Safety.
He concluded by saying that the true benefit
of safety improvement is all about people
and a safety culture needs to be embedded
in everything we do at work, at home and
at play.
In his welcoming speech Chairman of the
Steering Committee Dennis Seen spoke
of three years with a year of apprenticeship to earn him a certificate
of class 3 deck officer qualification. He then worked with an Indonesian
shipping company as an Intern for a year and went back to study after
that. His hard work paid off and was awarded with a certificate
of class 2 deck officer qualification and started working as a Chief
Officer Cum Master in a shipping company for four years before
joining Toll Logistics (Asia).
He recently got married in March 2008 to his childhood sweetheart.
They use to do many things together but now he visits her when the
vessel goes back to Indonesia for loading and off-loading. He misses
her dearly and calls her from his mobile phone three hours per week.
As a Master, he needs to upkeep the vessel and to guide the crew
to ensure the vessel is on time and no unnecessary delay in the
deliveries. He also needs to report back to the office daily through the
communication systems on board and updates his location to ensure
he is on the right track. He has to hold meetings and briefs his crew on
daily matters and checking and making sure everything is in order and
safe. He also has to make certain that right navigations are observed.
He supervises and oversees everyone and everything on the vessel
and guides his crew with the help of the Chief Officer and Second
Chief Officer.
As a sea person, he doesn’t enjoy many things outside the vessel.
He usually stays on board as he finds that shopping is more expensive
than in Indonesia. Only once in a while, he will go out to socialise with
his friends.
He is very happy and proud to be working with Toll Logistics (Asia)
as all his colleagues and bosses treat him with great respect. He can
speak Indonesian to all his crew with no language barrier. He has
been given an opportunity to manage a crew of 12 and hopes that the
company will send him to different parts of the world for work and for
training. This is also the job he was trained for and it commands
respect in whatever he does. This is really a great achievement
for Master Firdaus.
The Chief Engineer in Albert Toll
AS THE CHIEF ENGINEER IN ALBERT
TOLL, UNTUNG PRIADI HAS JUST
RENEWED HIS SECOND YEAR CONTRACT
WITH TOLL LOGISTICS (ASIA).
At 36, he is married with three children with a
degree in Engineering in Indonesia. His
children are 8 and 3 years old and 7 months
old. As a loving father and husband, he calls
his family daily. Every time, the vessel reaches
Indonesia, he will stop by to visit his family. He
misses his family and he stores their
photographs in his mobile phone so that he
can see them every time when he misses
them. He even sends his on board photos in
MMS formats to his family. His dream is to
have many children if he can afford to.
His hobbies are to eat, chat with colleagues
on board, listen to rock and jazz music, sleep
and to watch the open sea. He seldom shops.
But if he does, he will stop by places like
Clementi, Boon Lay and Jurong Point.
He was in a supply chain company for two
years before he came on board to join Toll
Logistics (Asia).
The Only Female Officer
on Board Albert Toll
BEING FEMALE AND SECOND OFFICER
ON BOARD THE ALBERT TOLL VESSEL IS
NO EASY TASK, BUT FITRIA ELFI ENJOYS IT.
She is single and she joined the Albert Toll
about four months ago to help prepare the
ship for commissioning. She had her basic
course in an academy in Indonesia and
obtained a certificate there. She used to
work for passenger ships for about two years
and after a while, she felt she would like to
A very happy Fitria Elfi enjoying her time on Albert
Toll as Second Officer.
He enjoys his job and he can use his knowledge
to guide the second and third Engineers
and to solve problems together when they
encounter difficult situations. He will have
regular meetings with them to ensure that all
engineering issues are solved immediately.
He loves to work with machines and his
greatest achievement and joy is to see the
machines work to their best after he repairs
them.
Albert Toll Chief Engineer Untung Priadi proudly
stands by his machines.
try something different and accepted the role
with Toll Logistics (Asia). She is presently on
a one year contract.
She is the only female crew member on
board. However, when asked about her
feeling being the only female on Albert Toll,
she replied that she is safe with so many
guys around.
One thing she is not so comfortable with is
when she has to do the fire drill demonstration
in front of all the guys. She feels shy about it.
Nevertheless, she will continue to do her
best and will try to overcome her shyness in
this area.
She is very happy to work here on Albert Toll.
So far, she loves the experience on board,
she likes staying out in the open sea and
having good colleagues around her. She
loves to work, chit-chat with her colleagues
and sleeps in her cabin when she is free and
when she is off-duty.
Toll Global Forwarding gained The Reject
Ltd’s Australian based freight forwarding and
customs clearance business. The acquisition
has resulted in Toll Global forwarding being
the market leader in international freight
forwarding, customs clearance from Asia to
Australia.
Gluck approached The Reject Shop in early
1999 with an offer to complete a thorough
review of the company’s internal process flow
from the establishment of a new product
through to warehouse receipt. The initial brief
equipment available to market, in the shortest
possible time frame.
The Toll requirements provided NYK Line
with the opportunity for an ad-hoc call at
Shanghai’s new Yangshan terminal. NYK
quickly focused their efforts towards their
headquarters in Hong Kong and Australia, to
re-route a nearby vessel, m/v ‘Kaga’, to make
an extra call at the terminal, to load and
transport the containers to Melbourne.
from The Reject Shop was to streamline the
procedures and create an efficient, robust
import system to manage the company’s
forecasted growth. The agreed solution
involved Gluck building a data interface with
their operating system. The interface reduced
duplication of processes and provided up-todate
information and product visibility.
As a result of the proposed process
improvement, Gluck was appointed to provide
international freight forwarding and customs
clearance services on behalf of The Reject
Shop in August 1999.
Throughout our nine year partnership, Gluck
has constantly expanded the scale of their
offering to facilitate The Reject Shop’s
extraordinary growth. During this period, Gluck
has witnessed a growth from 770 Twenty Foot
NYK has a solid, long-standing partnership
with TGF and when approached for
assistance in moving a significant number
of brand new 20’ HC containers from
Shanghai to Melbourne, we welcomed the
opportunity to further expand and build our
mutually beneficial relationship.
TGF’s transport requirements provided us
the opportunity for an ad-hoc call at
Shanghai’s new Yangshan terminal, and
NYK quickly focused efforts via our
GLOBAL
Equivalent Units (TEU) to in excess of 6500 TEU
necessary to serve the growth in store numbers
integrates the major investment by Toll in
Asian Third Party Logistics and Australian
“We are planning for continued growth this
year so it is simply a case of onwards and
upwards,” said Charlie McShanag, General
Manager Merchandise. Toll looks forward to
working closely with Charlie and his team to
WOOLLY MAMMOTHS UNCOVERED FROM THE SIBERIAN
PERMAFROST, WERE AGED BACK TO 18,000 BC WITH HAIR AND
SKIN TISSUE, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.
Our highly specialised refrigerated containers operated at a
mandatory minus 18 degrees celsius all the way from Sakha
Republic in Russia where the containers then moved inland to
Vladivostok – one of Russia's largest port cities.
Still operating to strict temperature controls the precious cargo took a
connecting vessel from Vladivostok to Busan, Korea where they
moved on another vessel to Keelung, Taiwan where we undertook
customs attendance, load and unloading of the precious containers.
During the transportation we encountered a strike in Busan for two
weeks and fortunately due to our excellent network and experience
we were able to ensure on-time delivery in good condition.
Furthermore in order to have moved and unloaded the delicately
packaged mammoths from the containers to a 200m frozen exhibition
room, we had to specially build a frozen container to ensure their
preservation – which meant they could not be exposed to air not even
BALtrans USA Moves Up the Value Chain
BALtrans USA has started to see the
effects of new customer 2Wire which
is expected to add $9 million in revenue
to the Group.
2WIRE PROVIDES BROADBAND SOLUTIONS FOR AN INTEGRATED
USER EXPERIENCE. ENGINEERED FOR THE CARRIER AND OPTIMISED
FOR THE SUBSCRIBER. 2WIRE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES INCLUDE
RESIDENTIAL GATEWAYS, MULTI-SERVICE MEDIA PLATFORMS,
INTELLIGENT HOME SERVERS, REMOTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS,
VALUE-ADDED SERVICES, AND CALL CENTER CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
2Wire customers are leading broadband providers throughout the US,
Canada, Latin America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, including AT&T,
Telmex, BT, EMBARQ, Bell Canada, SingTel, and others.
Late last year, BALtrans USA entered discussions with 2Wire to transfer
their entire 3PL function from Agility to BALtrans. The BALtrans team
AEO Status
was tasked to provide end to end logistic solutions between Hong Kong
and Los Angeles. The BALtrans USA IT staff designed and together with
the BALtrans Hong Kong team, implemented information technology
allowing full visibility to 2Wire for PO and shipment tracking and WMS
(warehouse management system) through our Hong Kong warehouse,
international transportation to our Los Angeles warehouse and final
delivery to 2Wire’s end customers throughout the USA.
BALtrans President Americas Myles O’Brien hopes 2Wire will become
a significant revenue account for the Group and the first of several
USA strategic accounts allowing integrated logistics and customised
solutions.
“Thanks to all for a job well done. The knowledge gained from the
successful implementation of this project, together with the solutions
capability which Toll brings to BALtrans USA, is a strong indication of
the capability we have to drive the current strategic sales efforts,” said
Myles O’Brien.
Celebrating 20 Years – Congratulations to Alex Law – Air Import Manager, New York
City and Immanuel Wong – Controller, San Francisco International Airport for
reaching their 20 years service with the Company.
BALTRANS LOGISTICS UK LIMITED HAS BEEN AWARDED THE
PRESTIGIOUS ‘AUTHORISED ECONOMICS OPERATOR’ (AEO)
STATUS BY HER MAJESTIES REVENUE AND CUSTOMS (HMRC).
BALTRANS IS AMONGST THE VERY FIRST SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS
IN THE UK AND EEC.
AEO is a voluntary harmonised accreditation for all parties in the supply
chain including manufacturers and importers. As the awareness and
requirement gain momentum over the next 6 – 24 months AEO
commercial houses will only want to work with similarly approved
service providers. Notably AEO will hopefully gain aligned status
with CPTAT in the USA market.
The approval can only be gained by strenuous audit over six months
with both on-site and off-site, validation processes. The core areas
being; financial control and solvency; training; security; safety;
competency in customs regimes and disciplines.
For BALtrans UK, already being ISO, DFT (Department for Transport)
security listed and members of BIFA (British International Freight
Association) is a key commitment to having procedures in place which
are clearly documented and monitored. Forwarders who do not have
similar standards will struggle to demonstrate they have the
infrastructure to maintain the required benchmarks.
BALtrans has been successful in attaining AEO status in both the areas
applicable for custom simplification and security and safety. We have
achieved this status in both modes, ie sea and air. Whereas some
providers may only apply for a single category and one transport mode
eg air. This achievement has only been realised with the proactive
involvement of our staff demonstrating our depth of experience and
expertise.
THE BENEFITS OF AEO STATUS TO BE INTRODUCED IN THE COMING
YEAR FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES ARE:
A lower Customs risk score, influencing the frequency of Customs
physical and documentary checks.
Fast-tracking through Customs controls and priority over non – AEO
operators.
Omission of some data elements from the pre-arrival / pre-departure
summary declarations to be introduced in July 2009.
A recognised status across the EC.
An industry ‘kite mark’ and useful marking too.
Potential future reciprocal benefits and recognition outside the
EC (eg USA, or trading partners who adopt the WO Safe framework).
Accelerated authorisation for local clearance procedure
and Simplified Declaration Procedure under CFSP and NES,
and simplifications for regular shipping services.
Automatic compliance with the additional measures being introduced
by the Modernised Customs Code (targeted for introduction in 2010).
In addition, HMRC believes that AEOs will derive other benefits such
as reduced incidences of theft or losses in transit, improved security
and communication with partners in the supply chain and improved
customer confidence.
World Cup 2010
THE WORLD CUP 2010 IN SOUTH AFRICA IS STILL OVER 650 DAYS
AWAY BUT AS FAR AS THE LOGISTICS INDUSTRY IS CONCERNED,
KICK OFF HAS ALREADY HAPPENED.
“Already we and our clients are feeling the benefit,” says Vincent
Magnus, CEO of The BALtrans Clover Cargo Group from its Head Office
in Johannesburg. “We are working on numerous soccer-related
projects.”
One of the most prestigious and demanding is a project to install an
automated baggage handling system at Johannesburg’s O R Tambo
International Airport (ORTIA) to ready it for the massive influx of fans.
Global materials handling specialist, Vanderlande Industries designs,
builds, installs and services baggage handling systems for the world’s
airports. ORTIA is thus joining a prestigious baggage handling club
which includes Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris, Chicago’s O’Hare
International, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and London's Heathrow.
Vanderlande Industries appointed BALtrans Clover Cargo to handle the
importation of project equipment and materials from China, The
Netherlands, Malaysia and Switzerland. This comprised managing the
transportation, customs clearance and delivery to site of the contents
of 110 6-metre containers. The import was a time-sensitive process as
the engineers and their teams were waiting to offload and install the
project.
In Cape Town, BALtrans Clover Cargo handled the logistics of importing
state-of-the-art artificial soccer pitch, the first FIFA-accredited turf of
its kind in the Republic. This was installed at the University of Cape
Town. The previous pitch became played out with sand patches in the
goal areas and around the centre. Artificial turf allows for extended
use, particularly during winter so more disadvantaged youngsters have
the chance to play. Imported from Belgium, the artificial turf was
installed by Artificial Grass Africa assisted by FIFA officials.
With more sport than ever appearing live on television, BALtrans
Clover Cargo Export Division in Johannesburg developed a precision
logistics capability specifically to serve the Outside Broadcast (OB)
industry domestically and throughout Africa. Clients include SuperSport
– a wholly owned subsidiary of the MIH Group, which is listed on the
Johannesburg Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and the Amsterdam Stock
require cargo care to avoid
damage or pilferage,” says
Vincent. “The paperwork has to
PDL Toll Provides Ship’s Husbandry Operations All
Over the World
PDL TOLL SUPPLIES SHIP’S
HUSBANDRY SERVICES FOR A
NUMBER OF NAVIES AND COMMERCIAL
SHIPPING OPERATIONS IN PORTS ALL
OVER THE WORLD.
Ship’s husbandry is not a widely understood
term, essentially it means taking care of
anything and everything a ship could possibly
need while it is in port. Also known as port agency services, it includes
providing everything from food items and waste disposal to port
licenses and tugboats. Every detail of a ship’s visit needs to be
arranged in advance to make sure the visit goes to plan. PDL Toll has
been providing these services for more than 10 years and whether
it is vegemite in Vladivostok, venison in Vancouver or vinegar in
Vanuatu; PDL Toll has supplied it.
PDL Toll loads equipment onto the
USNS Mercy, Vietnam.
Looking at two of PDL Toll’s
recent ship’s husbandry
operations, it is easy to see the
scope of services that these
operations involve.
Recently, PDL Toll had a team in
Vietnam to support the visit of
the USNS Mercy. This ship is a
giant, floating marine hospital.
Its current operations involve
providing medical and
humanitarian relief in countries
where it is needed. As well as
looking after the crew’s needs
while in port, our guys were
there in advance to procure all the materials and tools that the
US Navy’s crew used to help rebuild a local orphanage.
FURTHER-A-FIELD, PDL TOLL HAS BEEN SUPPORTING THE ROYAL
AUSTRALIAN NAVY DURING THE RIMPAC NAVAL EXERCISE IN
HAWAII. TONY PRESCOTT SENT THIS REPORT FROM HAWAII:
PDL Toll was recently in Pearl Harbour, Hawaii supplying port agency
services to four Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships involved in the
RIMPAC 2008 military exercises. RIMPAC, or Rim of the Pacific, takes
place every two years and is the world’s largest multinational exercise.
Participants in 2008 included the United States, Australia, Canada,
Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore,
and the United Kingdom.
The exercise runs for almost one month and started with the departure
of the ships from Pearl Harbour on 8 July. However, PDL Toll’s
involvement started well in advance, with meetings with Fleet
Headquarters in February and June as well as with the individual
ships, prior to their deployment from Australia. This early preparatory
work laid the groundwork for a number of successful port visits by the
ships into the US Navy’s Pearl Harbour Naval Base. It was decided
that to best cover the expected requirement, three PDL Toll personnel
would make the arduous journey to Hawaii to ensure that our
contractual requirements to support the ships were met. Tony Prescott,
US Navy floating hospital, USNS Mercy, Vietnam.
Paul Stevenson and Nigel Cunningham were despatched to undertake
this role.
Originally, port visits were planned for the period prior to the exercise
from 27 June to 8 July and then again at the completion from 29 July
to 5 August. However, ships being ships, it transpired that a number of
emergent requirements meant that it was far from a holiday in
paradise sitting under the palms at Waikiki.
While at sea, the RAN ships performed magnificently, including HMAS
Waller taking out a former USS Destroyer with the first live firing of a
heavyweight Mark 48 torpedo. However, the exercises were not
without incident and unscheduled port visits had to be organised at
short notice.
PDL Toll, using their local suppliers and contacts, were able to ensure
that these times alongside were kept to a minimum so that the units
could return to the ‘war games’. Local contractors were engaged at
short notice to remove oily water waste from HMAS Anzac after hours
on a Sunday, whilst the Tobruk was supplied with 3500 litres of
specialised gear oil at short notice enabling the ship to sail later
the same day.
It is pleasing to note that, once again, PDL Toll have performed well in
fulfilling their role in supporting the Royal Australian Navy while also
being able to demonstrate to other nations Defence Forces participating
in RIMPAC 2008, just what we can and continue to do.
Harbour for exercise RIMPAC 08.
The PDL Toll team also took care of some of the other difficulties faced
MOST PEOPLE WOULDN’T SELL THEIR HOUSE IF THEY READ
WHILE FINANCIAL COMMENTATORS, JOURNALISTS AND NEWS
Not investing is risky too
Selling your holdings during a period of poor performance may protect
your net worth in the short-term – but it may stall or hamper your
while you remain on the sidelines.
Don’t sweat the small stuff
Instead of worrying about daily movements in the market, a much
wiser approach is to invest according to your investment horizon. For
example, if you are investing for a retirement that is 30 years away,
poor daily, monthly or even yearly performance is less important.
It is more important for long-term investors to have appropriately
established their goals and objectives and structured a suitable
investment portfolio to reach them. A financial adviser can help you
Super Fact Sheet – What is the Sub-
What created the volatility?
Market volatility has been front page news for
some time now. Sharemarkets around the
world have been caught in a storm which
originally emerged from the ‘sub-prime’ crisis,
evolving into tighter credit markets and fears of
a US recession. These pressures have caused
markets around the globe to fluctuate and the
Australian sharemarket is now significantly
lower than its November 2007 peak.
What is the sub-prime crisis?
A ‘sub-prime’ loan is a type of home loan that
can be obtained by someone who doesn’t have
a deposit, evidence of income, or even proof
that they can make repayments. One example
of a sub-prime loan on offer in the US was a
”NINJA” loan, which was marketed to people
with ‘No Income, No Jobs, No Assets’. Home
buyers have been able to take out these subprime
loans to buy houses that they really can’t
afford. This has occurred on a very large scale.
Some of the sub-prime loans which were taken
out in the USA were the types with very low
interest rates early in the life of the loan, but then
rise sharply after a few years, making repayments
virtually impossible. These loans were sold in the
hope that house prices would continue to rise
and that people could refinance later.
It’s worth noting that the system is quite
different here in Australia, where banks and
other financial institutions are more careful
about who they lend their money to and you
cannot just walk away from your loan.
The situation soured after the US central bank
(America’s equivalent of our Reserve Bank of
Australia) lifted interest rates four times in
2006. This led to widespread loan defaults in
America with masses of people losing their
homes, plummeting house prices and putting
more than 60,000 Americans out of work.
As you can imagine, US lenders quickly
tightened their criteria for lending money, not
only to consumers, but also businesses. As a
result, ordinary healthy businesses across the
world with no connection whatsoever to US
sub-prime suddenly started facing difficulties
or even bankruptcy due to banks' reluctance
to relax their lending criteria. Because loans
were harder to obtain, or more expensive for
businesses, this decreased investment by
businesses and consumer spending. As these
are the factors which drive the economy, this
slowed economic growth in America.
There has been some light during this storm,
with the Australian economy continuing its
strong path, with unemployment at record
establish the right mix of investments for your situation and review
your situation and investments in future.
Time is on your side
Despite their reputation as a ‘risky investment’, historical data shows
that the greater the time period, the lower the chance of losing money
on sharemarket investments. Consider the example below. While
17.3% of Australian sharemarket investors lost money after a year, all
were better off after five and ten year periods.
Prime Crisis and How Does it Affect You?
lows, strong business investment and
continued demand for resources from China.
Economists are predicting the Asia Pacific
countries will continue to grow. “In Asia, there
are large and growing economies, whose
demand for commodities will continue to
increase despite the turmoil in financial
markets.” Nick Toovey, Regional Head of
Equities for Asia Pacific, ING Investment
Management Hong Kong.
So tell me how it affects my super account
balance
Now, although we’re all the way across the
world, this volatility affects our super account
balance because, for the majority of
Australians, our super is invested in investment
options which usually have some proportion of
their account invested in International and
Australian shares.
What do the experts think of it all?
The truth is, no one knows for sure what will
happen. What we can say, is that market
corrections occur from time to time and are
generally part of the sharemarket’s normal
cycle. While it can be a cause for concern, it
is important to remember that even though
market moves can be rather dramatic on a
day-to-day basis, they do follow long-term
oving
A diversified approach
One of the most reliable ways to maximise your long-term returns and
reduce the risk of losing money is through diversification.
By taking a diversified approach to your investments – spreading your
money across asset classes, regions, sectors and investment
managers – you may be able to achieve superior risk adjusted
returns.
By spreading your investment across different sources of return your
chances of having at least some exposure to the best performing
assets is increased. Just as importantly, the impact of a loss from any
of one of your investments is reduced.
Intelligent diversification has another advantage – by spreading your
money across different investments in line with a long-term plan
instead of buying and selling based on short term market moves. By
sticking to a diversified approach over the long term you not only
reduce your trading costs, you also avoid the temptation of constantly
trying to beat the market – a job even highly trained professionals find
difficult to do.
cycles. Remember that superannuation is
generally a long-term investment. Short-term
fluctuations will come and go!
Take a long term view
Today’s volatility comes at the end of a ‘bull’ run
for world stock markets that has lasted much
What should I do?
Although periods of market fluctuation are
part of the normal investment cycle it may
cause a sense of anxiety. Remember:
1. Stay calm and not rush into any investment
decisions.
2. Seek good sound professional advice,
especially if you are thinking of changing
investment options to something that you
feel is less volatile during periods of shortterm
market fluctuations. Selling out or
switching investment funds now could
mean that you not only sell your
investments at a reduced price but you
may also miss out on any market rebound.
3. At all times, set and review your
investment strategy appropriate to your
goals and timeframe.
4. Diversify your investments to spread your
risk and benefit from returns in different
sectors.
5. Remember that superannuation is
TOLL TODAY SEPTEMBER – NOVEMBER 2008

OUR VISION
To be the most successful provider of 'integrated
logistics solutions' to the Asian Region,
providing customers with global reach.
Toll Group is the
Asian Region’s leading
integrated logistics
provider, operating an
extensive network
throughout Australia,
Asia and New Zealand,
delivering seamless,
end-to-end, regional
and global supply
chain solutions.
TOLL’S CORE VALUES FORM OUR CAPABILITIES AND STRENGTHS AS WELL
AS OUR KEY STRATEGIC COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES WHICH SUSTAIN US
AS THE ASIAN REGION’S LEADING LOGISTICS PROVIDER. THESE ARE BRAND, PEOPLE,
SAFETY, RELATIONSHIPS, INNOVATION, CHOICE, INTEGRATION, INFRASTRUCTURE,
ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY.
Brand – Our brand stands for a total service – for integrity, honesty, reliability,
innovation, trust and for 'coming through' for customers. Toll is 'the total logistics
solution...'
People – Our people are highly motivated, customer focused and proud of Toll's status
as the region's leading logistics provider. From our stable and experienced senior
management team to our operations people to our warehouse staff, our people are a
critical ingredient to our success.
Safety – Toll places the highest emphasis on Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) in
conducting its daily business. The company is committed to the risk management
process and shall, so far as is reasonably practicable provide a hazard free
workplace.
Relationships – Our customers and suppliers are our partners, and we value the
long-term relationships we've developed with existing customers and suppliers and
continue to build lasting relationships with all new customers and suppliers.
Innovation – New technologies are the foundation of innovation in the freight and
logistics industry. Investment in technology and our partnerships with IT providers
have opened the way to true integrated solutions.
Choice – Our access to a comprehensive network of road, air, sea and rail means
customers receive the modal solutions best tailored to their needs.
Integration – Our ability to draw on the resources of all the divisions of the Toll Group
means we can structure integrated solutions that maximise efficiencies across all
elements of the supply chain.
Infrastructure – We have in excess of three million square metres of warehouse space
in Australia, New Zealand and Asia, fulfilling our long term customer contracts, in
addition to generating numerous other value-add supply chain opportunities for Toll.
Environment – We are committed to ensuring the logistics task is achieved in the most
sustainable way possible. In addition to many internal environmental initiatives aimed
at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we also provide our customers with the most
environmentally friendly options for them to choose to have their goods moved that still
has them delivered when they need them.
Community – Toll takes its role in the community seriously. As well as continuing and
expanding our highly successful First and Second Step programs for heroin addiction
and those in the prison system, our operations across the Asian region are actively
supporting many worthy initiatives such as the Boys' Brigade Sharity Gift Box Project
(in Asia), Foodbank Australia and Convoy for Kids.
