Business and American Studies student Hannah Keen<br />

won the ‘Snapped’ photography competition run by<br />

our Research and Cultural Collections department.<br />

Hannah’s image <strong>of</strong> campus represents imagination,<br />

education and memories, three <strong>of</strong> the Cultural Olympiad<br />

themes. The photo was taken with Hannah’s iPhone on<br />

a study break from the library and she hopes it <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

‘a modern perspective <strong>of</strong> the majestic campus’.<br />

Programme reception<br />

The Alumni Leadership Mentoring<br />

Programme (ALMP) reception took place<br />

on 3 July. The evening brought together 15<br />

highly successful alumni, including Tamsin<br />

Greig, Cillia Snowball CBE and Sir Charles<br />

George as well as several <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />

students to celebrate the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

programme’s first year. The ALMP paired<br />

15 exceptional students with high-pr<strong>of</strong>ile,<br />

immensely successful alumni mentors<br />

who gave their time, wisdom, expertise<br />

and support to help these students get a<br />

flying start to their careers. Next year the<br />

programme aims to support 20 students.<br />

<strong>Birmingham</strong> partners in first<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Dance Medicine<br />

The <strong>Birmingham</strong> Magazine 5<br />

The <strong>University</strong> along with five other organisations,<br />

including <strong>Birmingham</strong> Royal Ballet and the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Wolverhampton, have joined together to form the first<br />

National Institute <strong>of</strong> Dance Medicine and Science. The<br />

NIDMS will provide a radical new approach to dancers’<br />

healthcare, a growing problem within the industry, with<br />

research, education and specialist treatment for dancers.<br />

Archaeologist named emerging<br />

explorer for <strong>2012</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Birmingham</strong> archaeologist, Dr Jeffrey Rose is among<br />

the 15 visionary, young trailblazers from around the world who<br />

have been named as the <strong>2012</strong> class <strong>of</strong> National Geographic<br />

Emerging Explorers. The programme recognises and supports<br />

uniquely gifted and inspiring adventurers, scientists and storytellers,<br />

who are pushing the boundaries <strong>of</strong> discovery, adventure and<br />

global problem-solving while still early in their careers.
