We’ve exceeded<br />
£100 million<br />
Earlier this year we launched phase two <strong>of</strong> Circles <strong>of</strong><br />
Influence, the <strong>University</strong>’s fundraising campaign, with an<br />
ambitious new total <strong>of</strong> £160 million. Five months on we are<br />
delighted to announce we have raised £102 million for our<br />
innovative research and campus development projects.<br />
Our campaign combines gifts from supporters<br />
with research funding from charities. More than<br />
£10 million has been given by more than 3,400<br />
generous donors this year alone. Thank you all.<br />
The stories below focus on health, whether that<br />
is fighting cancer or promoting healthy lifestyle<br />
Research with immediate impact<br />
Dr Andrew Peet, Reader in Paediatric<br />
Oncology in the School <strong>of</strong> Cancer Sciences<br />
and Honorary Consultant at <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />
Children’s Hospital, is developing functional<br />
imaging for the diagnosis, understanding and<br />
management <strong>of</strong> childhood brain tumours.<br />
‘MRI is a crucial investigation tool for children<br />
with tumours. The picture it creates exists in<br />
wonderful detail, but it gives little information<br />
on the type <strong>of</strong> tumour, how aggressive it is and<br />
if it will respond to treatment. The aim <strong>of</strong> our<br />
research is to provide<br />
non-invasive methods<br />
which can assess this<br />
and treat patients<br />
individually and quickly.<br />

and diagnosis is<br />
becoming ever more<br />

Brain cancer in children<br />
Brain cancer is a life threatening condition that affects around<br />
400 children across the UK every year. A groundbreaking new<br />
research centre in <strong>Birmingham</strong> is helping hospitals all over the<br />
country improve how they diagnose and treat this disease.<br />

brains are very fragile when they<br />
are developing and the very young need<br />
specialist care. You’re also acutely aware<br />
<strong>of</strong> the length <strong>of</strong> life. If we can cure a child<br />
they will then have a long life ahead<br />
<strong>of</strong> them.<br />
‘Research in this field has immediate<br />
impact and advances are put into clinical<br />
improvements straight away which is<br />
hugely satisfying. Ultimately, this research<br />
will improve treatment for children and<br />
advances will save lives.’<br />
