Jenůfa’s cheek is slashed, but also removed something that, even in 1904, must have<br />

seemed a distinct throwback in harmonic terms. <strong>The</strong> cut <strong>of</strong> a further twenty bars<br />

between figures 118c and 119 meant that the passage from Laca’s menacing ‘Tenhle<br />

křivák by ti je mohl pokazit’ (This knife could ruin them [i.e. Jenůfa’s cheeks] for<br />

you) to Jenůfa’s terrified cry <strong>of</strong> ‘Ježíš, Maria!’, which in 1904 had taken up a total <strong>of</strong><br />

52 bars, was now over in a mere eleven (Ex. 3.32b).<br />
