fresh and inspiring publication that showcases 

the personality of our farms and the quality and 

diversity of the flowers we grow in California. 

I hope this guide also highlights that there 

is a movement afoot. 

At Sun Valley Floral Farms, we have 

seen a notable increase in interest from 

our customers in providing “locally grown” 

flowers to their customers. With more and 

more people focused on where their food 

comes from, flowers are a natural to follow. 

Due to the food movement in California, 

we have seen the number of farmers’ markets 

throughout the state double in the

As the “slow food” movement continues to affect how 

people select and buy the food they eat, flower farmers in 

California also are seeing increased interest in the products 

they grow. With the dramatic expansion of farmers’ markets 

in local communities, a boost in popularity for Community 

Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups and the recent release 

of books featuring the “locally grown” movement for flowers 

such as Debra Prinzing’s The 50 Mile Bouquet, California’s 

bounty of year-round quality, freshness and variety stands ready 

to serve a nation in need of “local” blooms. 

This year’s 2012 California Flower and Farm Guide is intended 

not only to help connect you to America’s best source for high quality 

blooms but also to introduce you to the personality of the farms and the 

farmers in California that produce them. The California Cut Flower Commission 

encourages you to use this resource and those available on its website, 

www.ccfc.org, to inspire your interest in designing with local flowers to meet 

the growing demand for “locally grown” that increasingly includes flowers. 

The virtues of buying and supporting local blooms are many. More than 

just a color, a variety or a fragrance, California’s flowers represent an opportunity 

to support family farms that support our economy — our local economy. 

California is home to more than 225 flower farms that stretch from just 

south of the Oregon border to San Diego, and, together, they produce 80 percent 

of the flowers grown in the United States. So, when you think “local,”

system, which ensures that every drop of unused water is cycled back 

to the plants; 2) our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, which 

uses predacious insects, soft chemicals and scouting to manage pests 

and diseases; and 3) the installation of energy curtains, heat-pipe insulation 

and more-efficient equipment such as a 600-horsepower 

boiler. These improvements have not only lessened our footprint on the

Decades of expertise Established more than 70 years ago, Glad-A-Way 

Gardens, Inc., began as a two-acre Gladiolus farm selling from a roadside 

stand in Northern California. Customers mentioned to the original owners, 

John Canine and his sons Neil and Jean, that they had traveled “a ways” 

to buy their glads; hence, the name “Glad-A-Way” was born. In the 1940s, 

the Canines began selling at the San Francisco Flower Market and eventually 

moved their production to the Central Coast. Today, our 

company is owned by Brian Caird and family, who purchased 

it in 2004. 

Prime California location Glad-A-Way Gardens 

comprises more than 350 acres in the Santa Maria Valley, 

just north of Santa Barbara, which has the perfect 

conditions for the year-round propagation, harvesting 

and shipping of Gladioli. Our peak production season 

is April through November, with limited production December 

through March. 

Our specialized growing and post-harvest process, 

together with the ideal soil and climate, allow us to provide 

you with award-winning flowers. We continuously 

seek new varieties from the world’s foremost breeders, 

which coupled with our own hybridization program, enables 

us to bring you the largest and longest-lasting blooms possible. 

Growing supply and demand The spikes of our traditional large-flowered 

Gladioli typically have 12 to 16 funnel-shaped blooms and grow 3 to 4 

feet long. Our color assortment includes white, red, pink, orange, peach, 

yellow, green, purple and lavender, as well as unusual novelty bicolors. These 

flowers’ tremendous value and long vase life continue to create increased 

demand, and we now harvest more than 20 million stems annually!
