As Chairman of the California Cut Flower Commission
(CCFC), I’m pleased to present the second
edition of the California Flower and Farm
Guide. Once again, you’ll find this guide to be a
fresh and inspiring publication that showcases
the personality of our farms and the quality and
diversity of the flowers we grow in California.
I hope this guide also highlights that there
is a movement afoot.
At Sun Valley Floral Farms, we have
seen a notable increase in interest from
our customers in providing “locally grown”
flowers to their customers. With more and
more people focused on where their food
comes from, flowers are a natural to follow.
Due to the food movement in California,
we have seen the number of farmers’ markets
throughout the state double in the
past 10 years. People want to know their
farmers, and they want to buy local!
So do you know where your flowers come
from? Do your customers?
This 2012 California Flower and Farm
Guide will help you and your customers
better connect with the farmers behind
your flowers. As California’s flower farmers,
we provide high-quality locally grown
flowers year-round to customers throughout
the country.
Behind every California-grown flower you
buy, there is a community of people that you
support. A recent report from the CCFC
found that 92 cents of every dollar earned
by a California flower farmer goes right back
into the economy. That is a fantastic return
on investment for our country’s economy!
As the flower farmers of California, we are
committed to bringing the best flowers
America has to offer to floral retailers
and designers throughout the United
States. Remember, “California Flowers are
America’s Flowers!”
Sincerely,
As the “slow food” movement continues to affect how
people select and buy the food they eat, flower farmers in
California also are seeing increased interest in the products
they grow. With the dramatic expansion of farmers’ markets
in local communities, a boost in popularity for Community
Supported Agriculture (CSA) groups and the recent release
of books featuring the “locally grown” movement for flowers
such as Debra Prinzing’s The 50 Mile Bouquet, California’s
bounty of year-round quality, freshness and variety stands ready
to serve a nation in need of “local” blooms.
This year’s 2012 California Flower and Farm Guide is intended
not only to help connect you to America’s best source for high quality
blooms but also to introduce you to the personality of the farms and the
farmers in California that produce them. The California Cut Flower Commission
encourages you to use this resource and those available on its website,
www.ccfc.org, to inspire your interest in designing with local flowers to meet
the growing demand for “locally grown” that increasingly includes flowers.
The virtues of buying and supporting local blooms are many. More than
just a color, a variety or a fragrance, California’s flowers represent an opportunity
to support family farms that support our economy — our local economy.
California is home to more than 225 flower farms that stretch from just
south of the Oregon border to San Diego, and, together, they produce 80 percent
of the flowers grown in the United States. So, when you think “local,”
think California — because “California Flowers are America’s Flowers!”
In 1979, our company’s founder and owner,
Ed Van Wingerden, planted Ever-Bloom’s first crop —
Gypsophila — and, over 33 years, has built 15 acres of greenhouses
that now produce 275 varieties of Gerbera daisies.
In today’s diverse cut-flower market, our niche is selling
retail-ready packs of consistently superior quality blooms to
the wholesale market.
Have it your way We offer a wide assortment of packaging
options, in both wet-packs and dry-packs, all of
which contain our colorful Gerberas and mini Gerberas.
The smaller packs are designed for the end users — either the floral
retailers or the consumers — allowing our customers — the wholesale
distributors — to avoid resorting or repackaging. And when our customers
open their boxes, they will consistently find quality Gerberas, in
the colors they ordered.
Social and environmental consciousness We are proud of the
steps we have taken toward sustainability and lower-environmental-impact
farming, including 1) our closed-loop irrigation and water collection
system, which ensures that every drop of unused water is cycled back
to the plants; 2) our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, which
uses predacious insects, soft chemicals and scouting to manage pests
and diseases; and 3) the installation of energy curtains, heat-pipe insulation
and more-efficient equipment such as a 600-horsepower
boiler. These improvements have not only lessened our footprint on the
environment but also improved the quality of our beautiful Gerberas.
Every one of our flowers is the perfect result of a happy marriage
between art and science — and the tireless dedication of the Ever-
Bloom team to their craft.
At Ocean Breeze Farms, we grow the highest-quality flowers in
America, but our true product is customer service. We put centuries of
Van Wingerden family experience growing crops — experience that dates
back to the 1600s in Holland — to work to take care of our customers.
On a mission Utilizing state-of-the-art technologies, we bring you consistently
superior flowers. Our commitment to quality product, communication
and teamwork promotes a positive relationship with all of our
customers. Our relationship with you is symbiotic — dependent on fairness
and honesty.
Growing quality crops We have grown far from our humble roots
when, in 1973, we sold only chrysanthemums. Today, under the
leadership of Rene and June Van Wingerden, we still grow
chrysanthemums, but we’re known for our superb Gerberas, Oriental
lilies and callas, as well as Hydrangeas in a rainbow of colors.
The unique environments at our farms in Carpinteria and
Nipomo enable us to offer our products year-round. Technology,
such as hydroponics and Integrated Pest Management (IPM), has
increased our consistency and quality while reducing the environmental
impact of greenhouse growing.
Attention to detail In an increasingly competitive flower market, it is
critical that we remain focused on new flower trends and dedicated to
maintaining an evolving product line, so we introduce new varieties every
year. In addition, every order is custom packed, and we’re extremely careful
about preparing flowers for transport, knowing they need to arrive at
your business ready to sell.
But don’t take our word for it! We’re happy to give tours of our
flower operation any Saturday, to show you exactly why Ocean Breeze
is successful!
More than 40 years of innovation and quality have put The Sun
Valley Group — comprising Sun Valley Floral Farms, Sun Pacific
Bouquet and West Coast Evergreen — firmly at the top
of flower growing operations in the U.S. Our farms stretch
across 750 miles of California and Canada.
A full range of crops Ever since Sun Valley developed the
‘Stargazer’ Oriental lily in 1974, we have set the pace for creating
new floral products. Our all-encompassing collection of
hybrid lilies includes premier lines like the show-stopping, premium-quality
Lilytopia lilies, with unbelievably large blooms.
Soil-grown tulips, with year-round availability, are another major differentiator for
our company. Growing tulips in soil produces sturdier plants with larger buds, darker
foliage and superior vase life, and sourcing bulbs from the Northern and Southern
hemispheres and using state-of-the-art bulb cooling technologies enable us to grow
tulips throughout the year.
We also produce delicately elegant Iris varieties, including the exclusive ‘Telstar’
Iris — No. 1 for opening and shelf life — year-round by shifting crops seasonally between
northern and southern fields, providing optimal light levels and weather conditions.
Other popular flowers include our ‘Matsumoto’ asters, Hydrangeas, hyacinths and
Freesias as well as dozens of other botanicals. In addition, we produce a wide range of
bouquets at our Sun Pacific Bouquet division as well as northwestern greens from our
West Coast Evergreen division.
Combining commitments to quality control, state-of-the-art technologies, the
best bulb and flower stock, superb growing conditions and a work force
of dedicated team members, Sun Valley brings flowers to market,
Building on tradition Eight decades of experience have
created a foundation of innovation, expertise and first-class
customer service at Mellano & Company. Today, honoring
the legacy of our founder, Giovanni Mellano, three generations
of the Mellano family blend old-fashioned values with a
commitment to innovation and modern technology, to bring
our customers the freshest, highest-quality cut flowers and
foliages possible.
Whatever you need, we have Although our signature
cut flower is the delicately layered Ranunculus, we also have dozens of other
types of flowers and foliage. Mellano & Company is the place to order
Alstroemeria, Iris, Solidago, Genista, Myrtle, Boxwood, Ruscus and Agonis. And
we have a new Snapdragon program to meet the growing popularity of that
flower. Plus, we extend our product selection by forming partnerships
with growers around the world.
Growers, wholesalers and more In addition to our farms in Carlsbad and
Oceanside, we operate three wholesale houses, in Carlsbad and Los Angeles,
Calif., and Las Vegas, Nev. These facilities were recently updated, incorporating
the latest trends and technologies, and we adhere strictly to cold-chain practices
and offer “green” lines and hard goods. In Carlsbad, we partner with The Flower
Fields ® , a popular tourist attraction that features 40 acres of Ranunculus. And
in 2011, we launched a consumer-ready bouquet division, which has allowed
us to expand our customer base and offer current customers more options.
The combination of modernizing our facilities, following industry advances
and adhering to family traditions creates premium products and assures our
customers of continued quality, value and reliability.
customers want led us to add garden roses to our inventory.
These popular flowers, in gorgeous colors, lend
an old-world feel to arrangements with their full blooms
and high petal count.
Environmental consciousness With our sustainable production practices
and hydroponic growing techniques, we have the control to provide consistently
stunning and dependable flowers. As a Veriflora Certified grower,
we are dedicated to taking care of the environment. We have long sought
to reduce the impact of our growing and shipping practices on the planet
— reducing our use of water, recycling plant nutrients, and using beneficial
insects and other methods of pest control.
We are proud to be a California company. Our customers have become
more concerned about where their flowers come from and are encouraged
that our carbon footprint for shipping flowers is dramatically lower than for
imported roses.
not only the beauty of consumers’ special events but also the emotions
involved, lending an American-inspired elegance brought by no other flowers.
We are committed to continuing our tradition of excellence and innovation
as well as providing our customers with the affordable luxury
of dazzling roses.
The elegant, graceful beauty of callas is one of nature’s
finest accomplishments, and at CallaCo ® , a division of
Golden State Bulb Growers, we produce the best of
these fabulous fresh-cut flowers.
A century of experience Our specialty callas, branded
Callafornia Callas ® , are grown year-round in California’s
Monterey Bay area, and they benefit from the experience of
Justin Brown and his family, who have been in the flower industry for five
generations and 100 years. Through every decade and with each generation,
we continuously improve our products, utilizing research to help ensure
the longest-lasting, highest-quality flowers.
Modern developments The sophisticated calla is available in a rainbow
of hues, from the classic white to pinks, lavenders, purples, oranges, yellows
and more. We are constantly working to develop new varieties, such
as our bicolor ‘Diva Maria’ standard calla. This white calla has a gentle
blush of pinkish lavender and a superior vase life (50 percent longer than
standard Z. aethiopica varieties).
In addition, we offer custom-pack orders in several box sizes and wet
packs, and our state-of-the-art loading dock ensures our flowers are stored
in the perfect environment so they arrive at your facility in perfect condition.
An honor and a privilege Callas are popular choices for weddings, and
our extensive range of hues allows florists to beautifully fulfill their brides’
visions. Meeting the tremendous demand for callas as wedding flowers is
one of our main focuses. It’s something our staff takes seriously, and they
consider it an honor to be part of consumers’ special occasions.
At CallaCo, we produce flowers of such beauty and quality that
can come only from the Brown family’s years of experience and
that our customers can rely on — without fail — year-round.
In 1987, Dave Kendall launched Kendall Farms on 50 acres of land in
southern California. Through commitment, expertise and hard work, our family-run
farm has grown to more than 500 acres, producing the highest quality
flowers and foliages on the market.
International influence Our special location, in Fallbrook, has a climate
similar to South Africa and Australia, enabling us to grow the distinctive flowers
and greens that are native to those countries, such as Proteas, Leucadendrons,
pincushions, waxflower and Eucalyptus. We are the largest
grower of waxflower in the United States and are known for our superior
quality, grading and selection. We are also known for our strong, vibrant sunflowers
that consistently outshine the competition’s. In total, we produce and
sell more than 115 varieties of cut flowers and foliages, both nationally and
internationally, and all are available in everything from field bunches to handtied
bouquets and consumer bunches.
From the ashes When the massive wildfires of 2007 tore
through the farm, it created an opportunity for us. Working
with top consultants and implementing the knowledge we’ve
accumulated over the past 25 years, we combined the best
varieties, locations, practices, technologies and systems to
optimize all facets of our operation. This investment is now
paying off with incredible production, top quality, higher efficiencies
and long-term sustainability.
Exceeding expectations Paying attention to every detail is the key to producing
the best-possible flowers and foliages. We have eight teams working
together to ensure that, from growing to post-harvest care, packing and
shipping, all within an unbroken cold chain, we deliver the freshest stems to
you, our customers. We are committed to exceeding your expectations.
Decades of expertise Established more than 70 years ago, Glad-A-Way
Gardens, Inc., began as a two-acre Gladiolus farm selling from a roadside
stand in Northern California. Customers mentioned to the original owners,
John Canine and his sons Neil and Jean, that they had traveled “a ways”
to buy their glads; hence, the name “Glad-A-Way” was born. In the 1940s,
the Canines began selling at the San Francisco Flower Market and eventually
moved their production to the Central Coast. Today, our
company is owned by Brian Caird and family, who purchased
it in 2004.
Prime California location Glad-A-Way Gardens
comprises more than 350 acres in the Santa Maria Valley,
just north of Santa Barbara, which has the perfect
conditions for the year-round propagation, harvesting
and shipping of Gladioli. Our peak production season
is April through November, with limited production December
through March.
Our specialized growing and post-harvest process,
together with the ideal soil and climate, allow us to provide
you with award-winning flowers. We continuously
seek new varieties from the world’s foremost breeders,
which coupled with our own hybridization program, enables
us to bring you the largest and longest-lasting blooms possible.
Growing supply and demand The spikes of our traditional large-flowered
Gladioli typically have 12 to 16 funnel-shaped blooms and grow 3 to 4
feet long. Our color assortment includes white, red, pink, orange, peach,
yellow, green, purple and lavender, as well as unusual novelty bicolors. These
flowers’ tremendous value and long vase life continue to create increased
demand, and we now harvest more than 20 million stems annually!
California flowers are
America’s flowers
More than ever before, consumers care about where
the flowers they purchase are grown.
For every dollar a California farmer earns, 92 cents goes
right back into the local economy. That’s a terrific return on
an investment for buying “locally grown” flowers and foliages!
grown in the USA
From issues of promotion, transportation,
governmental affairs, grower research
and economic development, the CCFC
serves both farmers and retailers by
providing consumers nationwide with
“locally grown” flowers.
