Dear Second Harvest Community,
We would like to thank you for an unprecedented level of
participation and support this year when we needed you
more than ever.
It has been a challenging year. The United States is
weathering the largest unemployment surge in 20 years
and we have experienced the biggest jump in the cost of
food in 18 years. As a result, we have seen a nearly 28%
increase in the number of people needing food and the
gap between need and resources is growing.
Despite the tough economic times, we have had a
remarkable year and an overall increase in community
support. Most notably, we have expanded the Food
For Children program from 27 to 41 sites. With this
increased outreach we have been able to deliver more food
to underserved areas and groups.
Our community really came together to raise over $4.3
million for the facility expansion campaign and new
produce cooler, which will be operational this summer.
The cooler will give us the space we need to store and
distribute more fresh fruits and vegetables to needy families,
while the expanded and more efficient distribution
center will give us more space to store and distribute basic
staples. New truck docks and storage racks will double
our efficiency and help us move the food more quickly to
those in need.
With the new cooler, Second Harvest has been able to
create our newest program, “Passion For Produce,” to
deliver beautiful bags of fresh produce and nutrition
education to low-income county residents on a weekly
basis. These sites will include food pantries, migrant
education programs, and local health clinics.
As we look forward to 2008-2009, we face increased
opportunities and challenges, but with your continued
partnership and participation, we will be able to continue
our commitment to provide excellence in programs and
food distribution. Thanks to your ongoing support and
participation, we will 1) continue to improve Second
Harvest infrastructure for improved food quality and
distribution, 2) expand our Food For Children program
and further develop the Passion For Produce program to
address the growth in demand for food, and 3) continue
to deepen our partnership with our many friends in the
community to strengthen food bank services.
Our challenge is clear, and together with your help and
that of our energetic Board, staff, and volunteers, we will
continue to build the momentum to end hunger and
malnutrition in our community.
O U R P R O G R A M S
Without the aid of our extensive Second Harvest family of supporters, we simply could not feed the 47,000 people per month
who depend on us for food. On the following pages, meet some of the people, partners, and organizations who helped us collect,
organize, and distribute the more than 6.5 million pounds of food we placed in the hands of hungry families last year.
Key to reducing childhood
hunger in our community
is Second Harvest’s Food
For Children program.
Operating in 41 schools
and low-income apartment
complexes throughout Santa
Cruz County, the goal is to
provide fresh food and staples
directly to families in need,
at convenient locations, so
that they do not need to miss
work in order to get food to
nourish their children.
FOOD FOR CHILDREN
EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE
Second Harvest
supplies six USDA
commodity distribution
centers in
Davenport, Live Oak,
San Lorenzo Valley,
Santa Cruz, and
Watsonville. These
centers provide lifeline foods like grains, protein, and
produce to income-qualifying families in each area.
OUTREACH, EDUCATION & HOTLINE
Second Harvest staff provides cooking demonstrations
and nutrition education to local schools and to
the community at large to promote healthy eating
and lifestyles. The Outreach Team gives informative,
interactive presentations on food stamps, nutrition
and physical activity, as well as other resources to
low-income clients at highest risk for diabetes,
obesity, and
malnutrition.
Our Community
Food Hotline fields
over 40 calls a
day, and up to
1,200 per month,
referring families
to local pantries
for food and other
services. Second
Harvest provides
outreach and
advocacy to local and state officials on the problems
of hunger and malnutrition in our community.
PARTNERS IN NEED
The Partners in
Need program
allows low-income
individuals
to volunteer their
time at Second
Harvest and
receive a box of
food each week
for their families.
This program respects the dignity and work-ethic
of these volunteers, and their help aids Second
Harvest in involving everyone in the community
to work to end hunger.
AGENCY FOOD DISTRIBUTION
AGENCY DELIVERY
Second Harvest is a
central distribution hub
for healthy, affordable
fresh produce and
staples for 180 agencies
and programs in our
community, distributing
more than 6.5
million pounds of food
per year. These agencies
and programs, in turn,
provide much-needed
services in our community,
such as supporting
the elderly, providing
after-school programs
for kids, and operating
soup kitchens,
homeless shelters and
recovery centers.
The Agency Delivery
program brings fresh
food and staples
directly to member
agencies’ doors, saving
them time and money.
Agencies order the
type and quantity of
food needed through
the internet, then
we bring the food to them. This program helps us move more
perishable fresh fruits and vegetables from our warehouse to the
agencies and clients who need them the most.
TOGETHER WE ARE BUILDING A WELL-NOURISHED COMMUNITY
We did it! Through the efforts of many people and the donations of even more, we raised over $4.3 million for our expansion
project. Thank you to all who made this happen!
This past year we completed Phase One of our construction, expanding our warehouse by 18,000 sq. ft., installing a 21,600
cu.ft. freezer, adding three distribution docks and space for a 30,000 sq. ft. cooler. This next year we will complete renovation
of the warehouse with pallet racking, install our produce cooler, create a new agency distribution area, and add an office
complex and volunteer space.
As a separate, but related project, we also installed solar panels made possible by Jim Hayes and Friends. The solar panels
provide the extra power needed for the new freezer and cooler.
THANKS TO OUR GRAND BALL SPONSORS
Second Harvest’s Grand Ball, held on June 14th at the Cocoanut Grove, Santa Cruz, was a sold-out success.
The event was a benefit for Second Harvest Food Bank’s expansion project.

Thank you!
On behalf of the generations of working poor families, seniors, and children who will benefit from Second Harvest’s expansion
project, we thank these community members for their vision, compassion, and leadership. Their generous donations are
building a well-nourished community.
